¿Pirata ecologista o ecoterrorista?

On this podcast we have an uncomfortable conversation about the events on September 12. On that day, more than 1,400 Atlantic white-sided dolphins were killed on a beach in Eysturoy. We'll gather facts to help you understand exactly what happened, and then talk to our friend Runi Nielsen about what it all means, and what changes might be in store in the future. Then we end with a special message for a specific set of our first-time listeners. In the podcast, we promise links to a lot of older podcasts. So... here you go. This is our conversation with Runi Nielsen in 2014 about his anti-whaling activism. And here's part 2 of that conversation. In 2009, we did our first episode on Faroese whaling. We spoke to a researcher who studies whaling in small countries, and a Faroese public health doctor who advised certain people not to eat whale meat. You can find it here. In 2015, we documented a hunt as it happened. We also spoke to Pete Bethune about why he changed his strategy to end Faroese whaling. And here's part 2 of that conversation.
Connecting with us from Costa Rica, Pete Bethune has committed his life to wildlife conservation. Following his world record journey circumnavigating the world on a bio-fuel driven trimaran, Pete joined forces with Sea Shepherd in their fight to prevent whaling in Antarctica. When Earthrace became low on fuel a Japanese whaling vessel took the opportunity to ram the boat with Pete and his crew still onboard which ultimately led to its sinking. Following this, Pete boarded the Japanese vessel in a bid to present the captain with a bill for his boat. Since that day Pete's story has led him to prison in Japan, leading special forces teams into hostile environments, producing a TV show called The Operatives, assisting governments in the fight against poachers and illegal fishing, shot at and even stabbed. Pete doesn't claim to be a diver albeit he has 4-500 dives under his belt and an amazing story to tell. For an adventure of a lifetime, you can get in touch with Pete and volunteer to become part of the team. Snake venom is a wily beast. It's packed with hundreds of toxins that can attack our blood vessels, muscles and nerves. That's why snake bites kill some 100,000 people each year. On today's show — dangerous snake bites and the bizarre way we make the only thing that can save you from them: antivenom. (Spoiler alert: it takes snake milkers and stables filled with horses.) We'll also look at the groundbreaking research that could eventually revolutionise all this. Kiwi conservationist Pete Bethune has walked out of a hospital in Costa Rica after a deadly snakebite almost claimed his life two weeks ago.He was bitten by the highly venomous Fer De Lance snake in a South American jungle just after Christmas.Initially fearing he would not make it out alive, Bethune managed a difficult three-hour trek, clambering and dragging himself through unforgiving terrain to reach his boat.Bethune told Tim Dower he is one happy camper to be alive and back on his ship."I gave myself a bit of a fright... when I first got bitten I thought I was a dead man, we were so far from being able to get out of that jungle in terms of distance. I know the history of the Fer De Lance snake - some people are dead in five minutes, some it might take four or five hours."By the time he got to a hospital, his left leg had swollen to at least double the size of his right after the viper sank its fangs into his lower calf.Bethune says there are ongoing issues, which include a bladder problem and muscle issue on his calf. However medical professionals expect both to clear up soon.
Pete Bethune has been shot at, run over by a Japanese security vessel, incarcerated in Libya and Japan, and held under armed guard in a Guatemalan Military camp… all in the name of protecting our natural planet. Conservationist, author, tv producer, and public speaker, Pete Bethune has an amazing story.
