Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Captain Paul Watson, a pioneering environmental activist and marine conservationist. As a founding member of Greenpeace and the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Captain Watson has dedicated his life to defending marine ecosystems worldwide. His unwavering commitment to direct action and environmental advocacy has made him both a controversial and influential figure in the fight to protect our oceans. In this conversation, we'll delve into his early inspirations, the challenges he's faced, and his vision for the future of marine conservation. In this episode we talked about: – how he managed time in prison – why humans really dont care about other species – how does he define success in activism – the so called tradition in Denmark – why governments don´t really act that much – how to observe / control the ocean – his perspective on humanity and if it changed over the years – the state of the oceans and why this really should concern us all – the moment that made him become an ocean activist – how his own Organisation turned against him - why eco tourism isn´t a good thing Shownotes: The Paul Watson Foundation Books by Paul Watson Paul Watson Foundation on Instagram It would be amazing if you show your appreciation with a review on Spotify (5 stars) and itunes (2-3 sentences + stars)? Send us a textIn mid-December 2024, Denmark released Captain Paul Watson (co-founder of Greenpeace, and founder of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society) after five months of captivity in an apartment-like incarceration setting in Greenland, when Denmark ultimately declined to extradite him to Japan for a matter about which Captain Watson asserts his innocence. Fairfax, Virginia criminal defense and DUI lawyer Jonathan Katz three weeks after Captain Watson's release had the privilege to spend an hour with him on our Beat the Prosecution podcast, covering such topics as risking detention and prosecution for what we deeply believe in; the international law limiting whaling and sealing; preparing for and winning at trial (he has never been convicted); and his uncanny ability to be non-angry. Remarkable is Paul's confirmation that he does not get angry, other than when he expresses it with his pen. Non-anger is very vital to beating the prosecution. Paul has been prosecuted numerous times, but all his trials have resulted in acquittals. Listen to how that resulted. Paul Watson and Jon Katz both eat vegan (with Paul motivated heavily by ecological reasons, and Jon being primarily motivated by nonviolence), and know members of the American Indian Movement (with Paul having been a medic during the Wounded Knee action, and Jon peripherally meeting AIM members through his peace teacher Jun Yasuda, a close friend and supporter of the late Dennis Banks). Jon recommends reading Paul's autobiography Hitman for the Kindness Club, and listening to his podcast entitled Captain Paul Watson Foundation. More about Paul and his foundation's work is at PaulWatsonFoundation.org. Watson is one of the films about him. Donations to his foundation can be made here. One of Paul's previous organization's ships was named the Steve Irwin, who supported Paul's approach for animals. Those approaches include ramming whaling ships without causing injury to others, applying dye to seals to make their skins unmarketable, using stink bombs, and releasing animals from captivity. Paul magnificently sums up his work with this phrase that also is all about how to beat the prosecution: courage, passion and imagination. “… tied up at the pier was this all-black pirate ship with the Jolly Roger flag at the bow. It was menacing as hell, and I walked up to the superstructure, and there on the on the outer bulkhead, was all these skulls and crossbones. They were the names of all ships these guys had sunk or rammed on the high seas.” In 2005, adventure journalist and best-selling novelist Peter Heller, spent six weeks on board the eco-pirate ship Farley Mowat, fighting the Japanese whaling fleet. Led by Captain Paul Watson, the founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, their mission was to disrupt, ram or sink the harpoon boats and factory ships that hunt and kill hundreds of whales each year. On Sunday, July 21, Ocean Activist and Sea Shepherd Society founder Paul Watson was arrested in Greenland, a territory of Denmark, on an Interpol warrant issued by Japan. Japan claims he damaged one of their commercial whaling ships while protesting and helping to end Japanese whaling off Antarctica. France, where Watson now lives, has asked Denmark not to extradite him. We're replaying our October 2022 interview with Watson so you can better understand his perspective on fighting for whales, against pirate fishing, and for the health of the Ocean. In this episode, we talked to Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, about his background fighting for beavers, seals, and whales and the breakup with Sea Shepherd over its purpose and direction. We also discussed the Paul Watson Foundation, his biocentric religion, phytoplankton, and the planet, and how his time at the siege of Wounded Knee taught him not to fear for the future. If, after hearing from Paul, you'd like to also protest to the Danish Embassy or reach out to one of your members of Congress to add pressure on Denmark not to support Japan's political persecution of him, you can find out how in our program notes. Captain Paul Watson, co-founder of Greenpeace and founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, stresses the urgent need to actively protect our planet's oceans from human intervention. While the planet can recover over millions of years, humanity may not have the same luxury. Watson highlights the significance of phytoplankton as the foundation of life in the ocean and points out the reckless, unchecked nature of commercial fishing. Asserting that we are in the midst of the sixth major extinction, Watson believes the onus is on humans to save ourselves from our own ecological ignorance, rather than saving the planet. #SaveTheOceans #AggressiveNonViolence #ProtectPhytoplankton

For 45 years, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been know for its Direct Action Campaigns that led to controversial means to stop illegal activity in the open sea. The organization was led by Captain Paul Watson, who was the face and the pride of Sea Shepherd. Paul Watson was the youngest co-founder of Greenpeace and left the organization because he wanted to do more than protest illegal wildlife events, he wanted to stop them. His vision to create a fleet of ships to act as an environmental navy was achieved and the organization was known for being a thorn in the side of whalers and illegal fishers all over the world. But now, parts of Paul Watson's organization have turned their backs on him for a path that is more scientific. So the question is, will this ruin the organization or will it make it better? The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society offers to send a research ship to B.C. to help Alex Morton with her studies. At first, she rejects the offer as too provocative. Sea Shepherd is a contentious environmental organization. But Alex needs to get close to the salmon farms, so she changes her mind. Alex planned to visit all the fish farms off the east coast of Vancouver Island and collect water samples to test for diseases coming out of the farms. And then she got the idea to ask some First Nations people to join her. That was a game-changer.We are crowdfunding to cover the cost of this podcast. When the going gets tough the activists get tougher. Our oceans are in distress as we continue to overfish marine ecosystems around the world. 90% of whales, 85-99% of shark species, trillions of fish, and countless other ocean animals have been lost due to overfishing, much of which operates outside of the law. Illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing is a major enabler of the exploitation of our oceans but the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is standing in the way. Literally. By using direct action techniques and what founder, Captain Paul Watson, calls “aggressive nonviolence”, Sea Shepherd crews document and disrupt illegal fishing and whaling on the open water. Featured on the popular TV series, “Whale Wars”, and in documentaries like Seaspiracy on Netflix, Sea Shepherd ships send illegal fishing boats running as they attempt to cover up their destruction of wildlife ecosystems and human rights violations. Tune in to learn more about the crucial work Sea Shepherd is doing to protect our oceans, which also means protecting our planet, and how you can get involved today.SUPPORT Sea Shepherd: Learn more , volunteer, donate, and get involved at https://seashepherd.org/.CHALLENGE: The Earth Warrior challenge. Make a choice to alter your habits or behaviors in a way that benefits the Earth. If you eat seafood, or animal products of any kind, you can choose to remove them from your diet completely, or partially if you need a transition period. Replace disposables with reusables for good. Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, joins Earth911's Mitch Ratcliffe to talk about his new book, Urgent: Save Our Ocean to Survive Climate Change. He calls on readers to take action in their own lives to reduce their environmental impact and through protest. A controversial figure in the environmental movement because of his willingness to engage in direct action, Paul argues it is time for humans to change their relationship with nature and rejoin the bigger world they think that they control. Like his career, during which he has participated in direct actions against whalers and other extractive activities, Urgent is a challenge to the reader to look reality in the face. It's past time to that acknowledge climate change is happening, he says. He shares many ideas about how to take action to end the anthropocentrism that defines humans as the sole measure of value on Earth. Paul shares his experiences on the seas, including the moment he realized that humanity relationship with nature is "grossly and perversely insane." We discuss environmental stewardship, the obligation to recognize other animals as individuals with value, and the challenge of living in the modern, oil-fueled world without hypocrisy. He suggests that a mindful relationship with nature and one another is the basis for restoring the planet's ecosystem. You can find his book, Urgent: Save Our Ocean to Survive Climate Change at Amazon and Powell Books.

Captain Paul Watson is a Canadian-American Marine Conservation Activist who founded the International Direct Action Group, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. He and Sea Shepherd became household names through Animal Planet's hit show, Whale Wars, where we got an in your face look at the murderous activities of the whaling industry. For decades Captain Watson has dedicated his life to protecting all animals, especially marine mammals, and he does not shy away from controversy. In his new book, Death of a Whale, Captain Watson faces his most personal conflict yet when he and other anti-whaling activists find themselves at odds with Native American tribal rights. Conservationists, eco-warriors, whale protectors and supporters of indigenous traditions as well as anyone who loves a good story will find themselves enthralled by his new book.FOLLOW CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON:http://www.paulwatson.com/https://www.facebook.com/captpaulwatsonhttps://www.instagram.com/captainpaulwatson/FOLLOW SEA SHEPHERD:https://www.seashepherdglobal.orgORDER CAPTAIN PAUL WATSON's BOOK DEATH OF A WHALEhttps://shop.paulwatson.com/collections/captain-paul-watson-books/products/death-of-a-whale-the-challenge-of-anti-whaling-activists-and-indigenous-rightsFOLLOW AND JUSTICE FOR ANIMALS PODCASTWebsite: www.andjusticeforanimals.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/andjusticeforanimalspodcast/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndJusticeForAnimalsPodcast@andjusticeforanimalspodcast

Our next guest had a super unique introduction into the helicopter world. You guys ever seen Whale Wars? Yeah he was that dude flying the MD500 off the back of the Sea Shepherd's vessel assisting in whale conservation efforts from the North Atlantic, Galapagos, Gulf of California, all the way down to Antarctica. After his stint with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, he worked his way up from flight instructing in Robinsons to flying utility and firefighting in Hueys, 212s, and now is flying the infamous intermeshig K-MAX!He's here to chat about his experience with the Sea Shepherds , what its like to fly the K-MAX, utility pilot life, and we dive into the role helicopters play in environmental conservation. Captain Paul Watson is the Founder, President and Executive Director at Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. As we all exist in the cyber world, it's too easy to forget about the real world and the environment. Our prolific consumption and the prolific dissemination of technology has obvious environmental impacts. Criminals utilising the underground ecosystem of the cybercriminal world to illicitly trade in endangered species is an unfortunate reality. The evil and cruelty of humans seems to have no limits, this becomes clear in my conversation with Captain Paul Watson reflecting on his life of defending his clients "creatures" from threat actors "humans". There is profound wisdom being shared here and perhaps a moment for us all to reflect on the consequences of short term decisions and greed versus the longer term consequences. Captain Paul Watson is a Candian/American marine wildlife conservation and environmental activist, who founded the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, an anti-poaching and direct action group focused on marine conversation and activism. Paul co-founded Greenpeace, which he left in 1977. That same year, he formed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. Paul is an icon in the animal activism and conservation community. His work puts him in physical danger - as he acts as a buffer between killer ship vessels and innocent whales / marine wildlife. All of this, while changing and educating hearts and minds through several documentaries. With his catchphrase "If the oceans die we die", he has a no-nonsense approach and a deep belief in his quest to save ocean wildlife, the oceans, and subsequently, humans. Sea Shepherd is an international, non-profit marine conservation organization that engages in direct action campaigns to defend wildlife and conserve and protect the world's oceans from illegal exploitation and environmental destruction. They are one of the most well-known activism movements with 22 chapters in the US and many more globally. On the podcast, Paul explains how he formed Sea Shepherd, what he is most proud of as far as goals achieved, some crazy stories from sea, and what keeps him motivated to do what he has been diligently doing for 5 decades. It was a great honor to speak to Paul - a man who has inspired me, personally, over the years.
