Hear how Regina, Alan and their three children survived the most terrifying night of their lives in the grip of a tropical storm. “I wasn’t sure whether I was going to actually get to save everybody”. Dashed repeatedly against a reef and then slammed down onto a sandy beach. “We had Anna, who was two, and going into the water in those conditions, even in a life jacket, her chances of survival were small” This is horrifying and compelling in equal measure. “From the time we hit the reef to the time I saw the beach, I knew there was a really good chance I was going to lose my wife and my youngest” Neither Regina nor Alan were novice sailors. This could happen to anyone. This is part 1 of an interview that was first broadcast in September 2016. Today we revisit the first episode in John Herlig’s wonderful series, Postcards From Sea. For those of you not familiar with the story: Three years ago, in a boatyard in Reedville, Virginia, John stumbled across a tatty old sailboat called Ave del Mar. On the surface, she was in pretty poor shape but her bones were good and John saw great potential. Slowly, painstakingly, John brought Ave back to life and now they have embarked on a voyage around the world. This is a story about second chances and about how an unexpected discovery led to a new lease of life for both a 1967 Rawson 30' cutter and her former restaurateur owner. John’s quick wit and infectious humour made him a favourite among Boat Radio listeners when he was featured in The Life Aquatic. Now he’s back with his own series, introducing the people he meets and the places he visits as he and Ave explore the world together. John and Boat Radio are currently working together on a very exciting new project, to be announced later this year. Mudlarks are urban beachcombers who scavenge for items of interest or value in the muddy banks of tidal rivers. In London, when the waters withdraw, vast expanses of silty, rocky, rubbish-strewn sludge are exposed along the length of the Thames, and that’s when Nicola goes to work. Over the years, she has amassed a huge collection of items, from gold jewellery to messages in bottles and even an unexploded hand grenade. And that is especially true if your passage takes you far from shore at night. To Carolyn Shearlock, star-gazing is a privilege and a daily pleasure – one enjoyed by only a small percentage of modern-day humans, who are prevented from doing so by urban light pollution. Roy Finlay is a name that will be forever associated with ocean rowing. As an oarsman, skipper and boat designer, he is directly connected to thirty world ocean rowing records. As a young man, he worked as an underwater bomb disposal expert for the British Royal Navy. Later, he sold wine, built houses, kayaked around Scotland and delivered boats worldwide. He has spent a great deal of his life at sea and the rest either on the move or planning his next one. It is his intention to introduce a new ‘one design’ Atlantic rowing race featuring the Expedition 40 trimaran – a boat of his own design. Unsurprisingly, they also enjoy one or two shots of that unmistakable Greek spirit and Tom mixes a number of very different ouzo-based drinks, including the little-known Ouzini, the deliciously refreshing River Breeze and the rare and spectacular Milky Mojito. Last year, Boat Radio’s medical expert, Dr John Ross, made a programme explaining what to do if you’re faced with the prospect of delivering a baby on board a boat. We’ve had a number of requests to repost that show so here it is. It makes absolutely fascinating listening. Dr Ross has three decades of experience delivering medical care to people in extreme circumstances and remote locations. He is the medical director of Telemed+, which provides care to participants of the Clipper Round the World Race. He is based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. When not dealing with emergencies and delivering babies, he enjoys classic car rallying with his son. By popular demand, this is a repost of a show first broadcast back in July. In this sensational interview, Bob Bitchin contemplates murder, considers suicide, talks about growing up with Clark Gable, Roy Rogers and the Cisco Kid, describes life as a motorcycle gang member, recalls his time as Evel Knievel’s bodyguard and reminisces about his many years cruising the world aboard sailboats. “When you’re out there, life is like a dream.” After his sailing magazine Latitudes and Attitudes died an inglorious death, Bob launched Cruising Outpost and it quickly became the number one selling marine leisure lifestyle publication in the United States. He remains at the helm, aged seventy-three. He has written thousands of articles, published several books, owned numerous magazines, presented dozens of television shows and is poised to launch a new venture – a music radio station for the cruising and boating community worldwide. Get yourself a drink, switch off your phone, close your eyes and just listen. This is jaw-dropping, eye-popping stuff. Should you have a gun on your boat? Some sailors think it’s vital, others think it’s a crazy idea. The Greenlandic Government insist on it and Canadian law requires that all vessels navigating the Northwest Passage have a rifle on board. In this week’s edition of Ocean Research Project, Matt Rutherford discusses the pros and cons of travelling with firearms. Also this week, Matt’s African adventure with Yanni and Bruno continues. The trio head deeper into the heart of the continent, chugging inland via the Bintang Creek, encountering extraordinary poverty and hardship as they go. Matt performs rudimentary surgery to remove a parasitic worm from Bruno’s foot and later, as guest of honour at a village festival, is required to slaughter and skin a goat. Next week – Matt’s second single-handed Atlantic crossing.
