What a story this is! Born into an intensely homophobic and misogynist cult, Joey Green comes to the realization that she is a lesbian – and to make a bad situation worse, her father is an outspoken anti-gay activist. This week, in a stunning sequel to Steve Simmons revelation of multi-million dollar tax fraud and money-laundering in New Zealand, over 120 Australian Tax Office (ATO) investigators conducted an unannounced “SWAT” type raid on the Exclusive Brethren's prestigious HQ in Sydney, and a dozen other brethren businesses and homes. TRIGGER WARNING- Discussion and videos on animal abuse. One of the strangest and saddest features of the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is its appalling record of cruelty to animals. From slaughterhouses where live pigs are dropped to boiling water, to using SUVs to ram and run over kangaroos, to the mindless torture of cats, chickens and small wild birds and animals - the PBCC does it all - and apparently takes great pleasure in it. It all started with a great slaughter of pets in the 1960s, when James Taylor Jr, the alcoholic leader of the cult decreed that animals were "unclean" and were used by Satan to take our affections away from God. Within days of this pronouncement, tens of thousands of cats, dogs, rabbits, birds and other creatures were drowned, beaten to death or if lucky, euthanized. Hear accounts from PBCC leavers who were traumatized as children by this callous genocide of pets. Then it get worse... Hear One School Global teachers describe how their students delighted in cruelty to animals, and how they had to bring in speakers from animal cruelty charities to try and help them. Residents of the Chicago suburb of Barrington turned to the Get-a-Life team for help when the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church came to town. The secretive cult is trying to secure a 32 acre site in Barrington for a huge complex of a 2000 seater hall, a school and a superstore. Rather than make an honest approach, we believe that the PBCC corrupted two Barrington Park district Councilors with offers of multi-million-dollar realty deals to induce them to push through the sale of the site at a fraction of market value. The PBCC then sent a delegation to the public meeting about the land who lied egregiously about their intentions, and the capacity of the proposed room. Watch Steve Johnstone and Dale Diener fumble their way through a highly charged meeting of Barrington residents. We can't quite figure out why they were chosen for this - maybe it could be that Dale Diener was a former employer of Unispace and his direct connection to the Hales team placed him there? Get-a-Life was represented at the meeting by Lynette Diener – a Chicago resident and former member who has been quietly helping the team for over a year. When the public meeting erupted in protest, the PBCC them tried to push the sale through BEFORE a scheduled second meeting at which the issue was to be decided. Barrington residents legally blocked the sale, whereupon the PBCC hired a top flight lawyer specializing in religious freedom to fight their case…meanwhile a public protest was held, with “No PBCC” posters and placards, all filmed by national news networks on the ground and from a helicopter. The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church plan to build a 17,000sq ft church, plus a school and superstore in Barrington IL, a suburb of Chicago. here a former member of the PBCC explains exactly what a PBCC "church" will look like, and exposes the PBCC representative Dale Diener's lie that the capacity of the hall will be only 1000 persons. We also get a tour inside a PBCC meeting hall and the reason for the mysterious sliding doors and outsize A/C units is explained. We go on to look at Bruce D Hales' ministry, and explain what "4 square feet per person" means in the context of a 17,000sq feet hall. We look at the "circus tent" outside a Manitoba PBCC hall, and explain that with each giant "city hall": the PBCC build, there will be several smaller "local" halls required. We look at how the PBCC regard their neighbors, and using quotes from their own printed literature, expose the two-faced way in which they seem to offer a friendly hand while despising and hating non-members as "worldlies". PBCC Campus&Co superstores like the one proposed usually contain a well stocked liquor store. Are the brethren really planning to put a liquor store and a school in the same building? We look at how the Brethren rationalize and excuse using lies and deception to obtain what the church needs from the "hostile" world, which it regards as satanic. The Olive Leaf Network is offering information and practical help to ex-members of the Plymouth Brethren Church and other closed sects trying to make new lives on the outside. Ruth Hill reports. In a written response to RNZ's questions, the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church says excommunication is "a rarely-used last resort". Spokesman Doug Watt says they are saddened when someone decides to leave the church, but they "wish the person well". He says it is up to them and their family to choose "what their relationship looks like going forward and it is not standard church practice to interfere in that decision". He refutes allegations that ex-members have been forced to quit their jobs at the "request" of the church or its leadership. In response to claims that other support groups have been shut down by legal action, Mr Watts says individual church members have a right to protect themselves against defamation. He says that's a matter for them, not the church.

The church rejects all claims that they are a cult and describes themselves as a “mainstream Christian Church”, but as we speak to Jessie, you can make your own determination as to their structure. As a 4th generation member Jessie shares some of the things that occurred while a part of the church and how she helped her dad with some the businesses he looked to launch as a member as well as what her life was like up to the point she decided to leave. Jessie recently lost her mother and the relationships that she once had with other family members, including her father are now tumultuous or non-existent. Her focus has shifted to seeing herself as a powerful, strong, blessed and wealthy woman, coming from a situation where everything was run by men and women were viewed as subservient, meek and quiet. The Exclusive Brethren church has been using the controversial private investigators Thompson and Clark to spy on former members of the church.Over the past two years, Thompson and Clark has conducted hundreds of hours of surveillance on former members who have criticised the cult-like church.The private investigators have watched ex-Brethren from cars and parked surveillance vans and have taken photographs of people entering and leaving their homes.Thompson and Clark made headlines after spying on Greenpeace and Christchurch earthquake insurance claimants. A State Services Commission (SSC) inquiry was later launched into government agencies' use of security consultants.SSC head Peter Hughes condemned government organisations paying Thompson and Clark for "surveillance of a person just because they are lawfully exercising their democratic rights – including their right to freedom of expression, association and right to protest". Government agencies were forbidden to use the private investigators.But Thompson and Clark has continued the same operations for private clients, including the Exclusive Brethren. It has built dossiers on at least 20 ex-members, known or believed to be critics of the church. They contain information from monitoring social media, public records and information gathered from street surveillance – combined with information supplied by the church leadership.Information about the Exclusive Brethren spying operations has been pieced together from confidential past and present Exclusive Brethren sources, information from industry sources and fieldwork.The Exclusive Brethren is headed by Sydney businessman Bruce Hales, known as the Elect Vessel or Man of God. He must give his permission before members are allowed to marry, requires all members' internet access to be controlled on devices leased from a Brethren company and, most of all, does not tolerate any doubting or questioning of his authority.Members who express doubts or question the leadership face a particularly cruel form of punishment: being "withdrawn from" (expelled from the church without right of defence) and cut off from ever seeing or communicating with the Brethren members of their family again. Many ex-members around New Zealand have been separated in this way from their parents, spouses and children. The threat of severed families hangs over the membership. But ex-members say the church leaders still fear them, seeing them as a threat to their control.Surveillance teams have kept watch on ex-members' homes– sometimes from early in the morning until very late at night. They have also followed their cars and tracked them on public transport. The surveillance started in mid-2019 against a visiting British ex-member and branched out through the local ex-Brethren.Some of that surveillance has led to protracted legal and other retaliation against ex-Brethren from the church hierarchy.The main allegations in this story were put to Thompson and Clark director Gavin Clark and he was asked "do you dispute this?" He did not respond to the allegations. Instead he responded, by email, that it was "important to emphasise that [the 2018 SSC inquiry] report does not suggest surveillance can never occur".The company "provides services to protect individuals, operations and assets from being impacted by unlawful activity," he wrote. Thompson & Clark "always strived to operate within the law and the rules and regulations of our industry."Plymouth Brethren Christian Church spokesperson Doug Watt said "While we cannot comment on the actions of every individual within our Church, it is certainly true to say that the Church leadership has absolutely no knowledge or involvement in the matters you have described."He said "Just like any church, we are sad if someone leaves us, but wish them all of the best in their lives.... We strive to live a community-minded life, following the teachings of the Holy Bible and centred around values of care...
