Ian Arbon was present at the infamous July 1970 meetings in Aberdeen, where Jim Taylor Jr., the powerful leader of the Exclusive Brethren, shocked many with his behaviour. Ian describes how the atmosphere was tense and mocking, far from the reverence he expected from a brethren meeting.He saw how “Big Jim” controlled the room, playing to the crowd and the press like a performer. It was clear to Ian that Taylor knew exactly what he was doing. But things took a darker turn when Taylor was found in a compromising situation with a married woman; an event that led the Aberdeen Brethren to reject him and send him back to New York.This moment became the biggest scandal in the history of the Brethren, yet it was quickly covered up by leadership. Many members left, but the truth was buried. Ian describes the impact this had on him and his family and many other brethren. What a story this is! Born into an intensely homophobic and misogynist cult, Joey Green comes to the realization that she is a lesbian – and to make a bad situation worse, her father is an outspoken anti-gay activist. One week ago, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin had anti-corruption campaigner Alexei Navalny murdered. Navalny had already been confined to a remote arctic prison, and spend years in detention, much of it in solitary confinement. His crime? He had exposed vast corruption across the Russian elite, describing Russia as ruled by "crooks and thieves” and pointed out the opulent lifestyles of senior officials their vast holdings and luxury property. Now meet Steve Simmons - or perhaps you have met Steve before – in his podcast that was released just two days before Alexi Navalny's death. Get A Life shares the captivating story of Tom Grace from Adelaide, Australia who left the Exclusive Brethren at age 17 in 1970, after the Aberdeen incident. His raw, authentic vulnerability shines through as he recounts what it was like to make that decision after his parents decided they were done. After joining his family's building business, Tom's career took off. He started his own successful building company, became a scuba diving instructor, dabbled in underwater photography, and even had a deep desire to study law. Attending a motivational seminar, Tom was inspired to pursue his dream of becoming a lawyer. Writing down his goal of becoming a lawyer in 10 years, he broke it down into smaller steps, including getting a law degree. Tom's journey of rediscovery didn't come without its challenges. The scars from leaving the religious group haunted him, leading to PTSD. But therapy and self-reflection helped him find clarity and embrace his choices. Tom's determination paid off as he pursued his law degree, faced rejections, and eventually got accepted into law school. He started his law career at the age of 43 and today, he's recognized as one of South Australia's top lawyers in construction law. Through his story, he encourages others to reevaluate their choices and find the courage to pursue their own paths. Hopeful: feeling or inspiring optimism about a future event Eschatology: the part of theology concerned with death, judgment, and the final destiny of the soul and of humankind Let's dive into understanding the brightness of our future under the reign of King Jesus! In this episode I will be presenting a brief overview of four main eschatological frameworks: 1. Historicism- This is the idea that the book of Revelation describes events unfolding on a historical timeline between the establishment of the church and the end of the world.  This was the belief held by the majority of the Protestant Reformers: Martin Luther, John Calvin and John Knox just to name a few.  Since current events are always changing, the historicists' timeline also requires frequent updating.  Historicist Charles Wesley predicted the end of the world in 1794.  Later, his brother John Wesley adopted a new chronology that the millennial reign of Jesus would begin in 1836, after which then the devil would be unleashed for 1,000 years and then Christ's final return would happen.  Many other (respectable) historicists have offered dates for the end of the world.  To list them might appear as ridicule (since they are in the past), but that is not my intent.  The historicist view is held by the Seventh Day Adventist denomination. 2. Futurism- This is the mainstream view of modern evangelicalism (think Left Behind).  This view interprets the book of Revelation as future events in a literal, global context.  In his 1585 commentary on Revelation, the Jesuit priest Francisco Ribera proposed the futurist view (in no small part to combat assertions by the Protestant Reformers that the Pope was the anti-Christ).  Ribera proposed concept of the Antichrist as a single individual who would appear in the future and (among other things) rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.  John Nelson Darby (founder of the “Exclusive Brethren”) popularized this view (along with dispensationalism) in the 1800s when his teachings were included in the Scofield Reference Bible which became very influential among American ministers.  If you grew up in an evangelical denomination or watched any Christian television this is probably the view you've heard with three main variations: pre-tribulation rapture, mid-tribulation rapture and post-tribulation rapture. 3. Preterism- This eschatological view interprets some or all prophecies of the Bible as events which have already happened.  This view was first systematically put forth by Jesuit Luis de Alcasar in 1614 (also in part as a response to the Protestant Reformers).  There are two camps: partial and full.  Partial preterists believe that the prophecies in Daniel, Matthew 24, and Revelation (with the exception of the last two or three chapters) have already been fulfilled in the first century AD.  Full preterists (of which there aren't many) believe all Bible prophecy has been fulfilled.  (Full preterism is considered beyond the scope of orthodoxy by partial preterists.)  Some high profile preterists would include R.C. Sproul, N.T. Wright, Hank Hanegraaf and Kenneth Gentry.  The preterist view is held by the Presbyterian denomination.  4. Idealism- This is a nonliteral or allegorical approach that suggest all the imagery of Revelation is symbolic.  It is supposed Renaissance theologians initially offered this framework as an explanation for the “now and not yet” tension of the present state of the Kingdom of God.  This view has been adopted by some advocates of the “Social Gospel” as they see “the Beast” manifest in earthly injustices that the saints in the Kingdom of God must overcome.  This view does not take the prophecies as being fulfilled in a literal sense either historically or in the future (except among some adherents as to regard to the Second Coming and Final Judgement), but it is an allegory of good vs evil for all Christians in all eras. All of these views are within the scope of “orthodoxy” and affirm essential, core tenants of Christianity: the physical return of Jesus to the earth, the resurrection of the dead, final judgement and His eternal reign.  However, they disagree over what certain Scriptures mean and the details of these realities.  My goal in studying eschatology is not to indoctrinate others on a certain system of interpretation or make them agree with me, but to help us appreciate several orthodox views that exist within the Body of Christ and to consider with the guidance of the Holy Spirit you believe.  You are powerful to choose your own view! At the end of the day, the study of end times can bring us all to one conclusion: Jesus is coming again and when He returns we want to be ready.   My intention is to lay out some big theological ideas (eschatology, the end of the world, the Kingdom of God) and then discuss some practical applications: i.e., “So what?”  In this episode we do a very "high altitude" overviews of these four views as we prepare to dive into the book of Revelation.

We jump into the library of knowledge inside Jill Aebi-Mytton. She gives us an inside view to the history of growing up in the 40's and 50's in the Exclusive Brethren. She unpacks the myths of there being not much trauma in that generation and gives us a descriptive understanding of the power they used back then. She reveals her horror of why she asked to break bread. The importance of the PBCC history she shares, shows us how deep the implicit indoctrination affected that generation. Jill's journey into a psychology degree got her deep into the research of trauma that ex-members go through after leaving. She takes us though some of that research and we see through her very descriptive graphs the difference between the general population and an ex PBCC member. Michael grew up terrified that the world was going to end. This wasn't your typical childhood anxiety, but something he was taught while being raised in the Children of God cult. Michael left the cult years ago, but now in his 30s he's struggling to heal the scars it left on his parents and 11 siblings. How do you go on living when the world doesn't actually come to an end? On this episode of How To!, we bring on Rebecca Stott, author of In the Days of Rain, a memoir about her childhood in a cult called the Exclusive Brethren. "Whenever I have an interview like this, I can feel the frog in my throat," Rebecca tells us. "It's like there's something still censoring me...in my own head." Rebecca knows what it's like to feel ashamed of her childhood, but she's also learned to find what was useful in her experience and apply it to her life today.
