Hannah Buchanan | Click/tap here to view the Sermon Reflection Guide. This week's message from Colossians reminds us that the gospel is not just a set of beliefs but a way of life that transforms our everyday relationships. After describing how God has rescued us and brought us into a new kingdom through Jesus (Colossians 3:1-17), Paul shows what that reality looks like in the most ordinary and intimate areas of life: marriage, family, and work. While parts of the text may feel uncomfortable, especially around themes of submission and authority, the deeper message reveals a radical redefinition of power. Those with influence are called not to use it for control or self-gain but to lay it down for the good of others, reflecting the self-giving love of Jesus. This teaching plants the seeds for a more just, compassionate, and dignified way of relating to others, offering a vision for the kind of relational healing our world longs for. Practically speaking, following Jesus means allowing His love to reshape how we treat others by choosing humility, kindness, and sacrificial love in the places that matter most.

Knowledge is important… but it's not the same thing as growth. Real faith is formed when what we know starts shaping how we live. What's one thing you already know you should do, but haven't actually put into practice yet?

God's word is meant to inform us so that it can transform us. We don't just store the information we glean from his word, we apply it. James said we're not to just be hearers of the word, but doers. Join us as we see what we can do, practically speaking, to apply God's word as his church and be a part of what he wants us to be in advancing the Kingdom of God. While every thing about the local church doesn't look exactly like things did when the church began, the principles of the church still remain. We can learn a lot from the early church, one of which was how they were devoted to God, his word, and to each other.
Send us a textJoin us tonight under the soft light of a veiled full moon as we consider the wash of winter tree colours, when to start looking for a mooring, and how practical do you have to be to live on a boat? SERIES 3 EPISODE 64: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yeah, I heard it too. I heard him he "shouldn't have left" the White House when his term ended. And I heard him say AT his rally that he wouldn't mind people shooting at the reporters COVERING his rally. And I guess it's shocking. Except he's been saying these things (a little more coded) since 2015, and he said the shooting thing about Liz Cheney last Thursday night. And after all he is going through what the shrinks call “disinhibition” AT the rallies where he loses all sense of what he should say in private not public. But that's not what got me. I heard something I have never heard before. WHEN he said he wouldn't mind people shooting the "fake news," he said he wouldn't mind them shooting THROUGH "the fake news" - THROUGH it - AT him. Doesn't that sound kind of… what's the word? Suicidal? Plus: I understand that we are inside the 48 hour bubble before the election and the pressure is like 887 Atmospheric Units and our rage against this creature and his cult that wants to burn this country to the ground – burn this world to the ground – and our amazement that there is ANYBODY voting for him – that RAGE is at unbearable levels – but… didn't he sound kinda dead yesterday? At one point he was inaudible. At another, in North Carolina, he thought he was in Pennsylvania. Throughout, he sounded exactly like Hal the Computer in the movie “2001” when they unplugged him. PRACTICALLY SPEAKING on the eve of the election, the polls continue to support a Harris victory (size TBD) and this shocking poll where she's up by 3 in Iowa hides an even more shocking number (she's ahead by 20 among women in the whitest part of the midwest). And the reaction to the pollster who published this 21 point swing from June tells you all you need to know about polling. They have previously insisted Ann Selser was an immortal. Now they're saying she's making the rest of them look bad by not tailoring her poll to fit their narrative. B-Block (30:33) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A Trumpist has vowed to "castrate himself on camera" if Harris wins Iowa (if you're a Trumpist, haven't you already castrated yourself?). Chris Cillizza 2024 mocks everybody who didn't buy the conventional wisdom about the vice presidency (evidently including Chris Cillizza 2020, who had disproved it), and courtesy Tim Alberta in The Atlantic, we find a new reason to hate Trump. This is the real reason he's so mad Biden dropped out. Trump thought he had the perfect nickname for the President - and it's appalling. C-Block (37:48) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I call it The Annual Day I Get Trapped Inside My Home Day. You know it - and may have seen it on TV yesterday - as "The New York City Marathon." Why done is often better than perfect. Exploring the transformative journey from messy starts to remarkable achievements.
Oftentimes we hear that life is difficult and that hard times will come - God Himself even acknowledges this. Many people want to persevere through troubles, but besides white knuckling and gritting our teeth through life, very few of us know what this looks like day to day. If you want to know how to hold on for the long haul - through financial troubles, relationship conflicts, and job stresses - come check out our final week of Practically Speaking as we close out the book of James, looking at what it means to Practically Persevere.
You will not live this life forever. This isn't something we like to think about often and can seem somewhat morbid. However, God's Word says that it's the realization that we don't know how long we have on this Earth that leads to wisdom. James 3-5 talks about two kinds of wisdom: one that lives for eternity, and one that only lives for the here and now. God is also clear: you might find temporary success with worldly wisdom, but ultimately it leads you down the path of pride. If you are wondering: how do I know what happens after I die AND how should that shape my life, this week's Practically Speaking message is for you!
Our desires in our hearts, our different passions in this world are waging a war against us, against our relationship to God. Our honorary guest speaker Ryan Manring shows here how befriending the ways of the world around us is cheating on the creator and generous God, who desires to save us and be in relationship with Him. While we all are found guilty, He gives more grace. Hear the good news in this weeks message from the Block KC

James 3 is one of the most helpful places in the Bible for understanding our tongues - understanding the power of our words. Grab a Bible and listen along as we see the importance and impact of our words, and to see how God calls us to a better way of speaking and living.
Gaining knowledge is not enough to grow our faith. Without applying our knowledge, we'll stop growing.
The book of James in the Bible is a favorite of many because it gets right to the point - and that’s what our first message in this series does. Difficulties are inevitable, our faith gets tested, and we are prone to wander. How do we trust God and have joy through it all? That’s what James intends to help us with, listen here to find out how!

Shows Main Idea – Forgiveness is a multifaceted God-centered opportunity for two people to reconcile after there is a transgression. It's not always straightforward because of the complexity of sin and some relationship complications. Each person must work hard to understand biblical forgiveness and do all they can to reconcile when sin divides two people. In this talk, I will walk through many aspects of forgiveness, making practical applications in various situations. “The high school is totally looking out for me.” I am still a little bit obsessed with these principles from The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser. So in this episode I share a few things that I have been doing in real life - actually trying to practice that is helping me. I have a new delusional thought as well as a way to watch basketball games that is way less stressful. And I have found a way to reflect on my week while at church partaking of the sacrament. Maybe these can help you too. Bookmark this episode and please come back to us and share your practical tips for saving time, money and your sanity with us…we want to learn from you too. Tip #1: Prep yourself for a good morning the night before. Ex: Clean sink, dishes done (run your dishwasher at night) and coffee prepped for brewing before you are awake. Morning made! Tip #2: Create an organized drop zone. Ex: Kids papers, mail, etc. There will always be clutter, but designating a place for the drop zone, helps keep the clutter off the counter! Tip #3: Laundry…start ‘em young. Your kids can do their own laundry. Start them young with the square wash clothes, move onto pairing socks, etc. Hanging separators also help with organization for adults and help for the younger kids when they are putting things away, they know exactly where they go. Tip #4: Sports Uniforms…the uniform AND the socks go directly to the laundry room in the uniform laundry bin so they don't get lost amongst their dirty laundry in their bedroom. They also have a uniform bin in their closet so they know exactly where they are when hustling to get to practice or a game. Tip #5: Instacart: Online grocery ordering service. Yes, it actually saves time and money-absolutely worth it!! Tip #6: Rakuten: Go to Rakuten and create an account. Any website you would use to purchase something for your home, pet or shopping for fun, go through Rakuten and allow yourself to earn an additional 1% to 10% off. You'll get a check cut for your savings. Ex: great savings on dog food, a big purchase, Black Friday deals, etc. Tip #7: Dosh: This is legit FREE savings!! Create an account and add your most commonly used credit cards. Each time you use that credit card at participating stores and restaurants will automatically add the savings to your Dosh account and you can cash out after you've earned $15 or more.
