Margie Warrell: The Courage Gap Margie Warrell is a best-selling author, keynote speaker, leadership coach, and Forbes columnist. With twenty-five years of experience living and working around the world, she has dedicated her life to helping others overcome fear and unlock their potential. She is the author of The Courage Gap: 5 Steps to Braver Action*. Whether it's painting a vision of the future or giving feedback on something that didn't work yesterday, courage is a necessity for leaders. In this episode, Margie and I highlight the way towards just a bit more of it. Key Points Leaders may rise in the ranks because of what they do, but cap themselves because of who they are. The smarter we are, the more our fears work in the background. Beware discounting the future. Fear causes us to value the future less than the present. Reel in fearcasting worst-case scenarios. These can prevent us from seeing the benefits of action. Stop rationalizing inaction and excess caution. An excuse is always there to prevent you from doing that's right and true. Avoid betraying yourself to secure status with others. All of us make decisions in our life that are heavily influenced by our beliefs. Beliefs are things that we believe to be true that govern the way we move about the world. They are shaped by our history, the people who raised us or influenced us and often they are unconscious and develop over time. However, beliefs are just thoughts. They are thoughts that we have rehearsed so many times that they seem inherently true, yet they are just thoughts. Thoughts are optional. Thoughts can be changed at any time. A lot of our beliefs serve us well but many do not. Some of the sneakiest beliefs SEEM good but are actually holding us back or sabotaging us. In this episode, we offer 4 beliefs for you to questions and explore. These first 4 are inspired by the book The Confident Mind by Nate Zinsser. Go HERE for your own copy. Thank you for listening to our Finding Brave show, ranked in the Top 100 Apple Career Podcasts! “You have a lot of knowledge and expertise, but if you continually doubt the strength of your opinions, or the importance of sharing your ideas, you are going to lose the ability to shape where your career is going.” – Kathy Caprino  Confidence is key as you step into being the most powerful version of you, and this is something I feel compelled to talk about given my particular lens as a former corporate VP, therapist (focused on systems and communication), researcher, and now in coaching and training with thousands of executives and professionals across 6 continents. Thousands of people struggle with confidence issues, from not feeling “good enough,” to being insecure about their skills and abilities and suffering from imposter syndrome to experiencing “perfectionistic overfunctioning” that negatively impacts our health, well-being, life satisfaction and quality of life. From working with teams, I know, too, that both new and seasoned managers and high-potential folks at startups and other types of organizations often fear they don't know nearly enough to do their jobs well, and their confidence is flagging. This is why today I'm ingfocus on the 5 ways that your lack of confidence is hurting you, and what you can do - practically and strategically - to overcome this challenge and build your confidence and self-trust now so that it doesn't impact your success and professional fulfillment in the future. Are you like most humans, who believe in Murphy's Law? Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong? And anything bad happens in threes? Bad things happening is contagious and will continue. Do you also believe that when things are going well that the other shoe is about to drop? That your luck will run out? That kind of thinking is very human of us, but unfortunately isn't going to help us much when it comes to doing our best and wanting to be confident on the dance floor. When things are going poorly, what if we had the belief that all that means is that we are about to have a big turnaround? And that when things are going well, that we can't lose? That we are on fire! On a hot streak! We can't miss! That is called the Shooter's Mentality and while we can't ensure the outcome that we want, adopting this mentality definitely puts us in the best possible position for success!  Listen in to find out more so you can adopt this mindset for yourself. The words of wisdom from Eli Manning's Former Coach from First Victory to Positive Mental Deposits, and More Investing is very much an emotional, inner game, where lack of confidence, doubt, and worry can get in the way of execution and success. When I came across the book and work of my today's guest, I knew I had to sit down and talk to him more, and with a little bit of luck and his great generosity, record this very special hour-long conversation that made me think, and act differently since we spoke. Doctor Nate Zinsser is a renowned performance psychology expert who has taught three generations of soldiers, athletes, and executives to master the art of confidence and mental toughness. Dr. Zinsser is the director of the Performance Psychology Program at the United States Military Academy at West Point, the most comprehensive mental-training program in the country, where, since 1992, he has helped prepare cadets for leadership in the U.S. Army. He also has been the sport-psychology mentor for numerous elite athletes, including two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and the NHL's Philadelphia Flyers, as well as many Olympians and NCAA champions. He earned his PhD in sport psychology from the University of Virginia. https://www.natezinsser.com/ Dr Z's wonderful book is called: **The Confident Mind: A Battle-Tested Guide to Unshakable Performance —** I read it in over a few evenings, and I could barely put it down. Today, we discuss how confidence is about how we think about what happens to us, not what actually happens. Dr. Z. shares that the 'first victory' is winning in your mind before taking action. My guest emphasizes that practice brings inconsistent and delayed returns, but it is crucial for improvement. We explore that societal factors often undermine confidence and discourage uniqueness. Our discussion highlights that patience is necessary in the pursuit of improvement. Be patient and trust the process, as consistent practice leads to growth and progress. Dr. Z. suggests that you find joy in the journey and take pride in the quality of your work and the progress you make. Today we learn that depositing positive thoughts and memories in your mental bank account builds confidence and certainty. Our conversation reveals that you should view setbacks as isolated incidents and temporary experiences, rather than judgments of your abilities. My guest points out that you can use memories of effort, success, and progress as cleaner burning fuel for motivation. Dr. Z. advises that you strive for excellence without demanding perfection and focus on doing the best you can with what you have. Stay tuned until the end when my guest concludes that success is defined as self-satisfaction derived from knowing you did your best with the tools and talents you have. In this episode, part 5 of this series, Cherie shares how she's getting away from being so reliant on the GPS watch and committing to learn how to run and pace by feel. This is, she continues to discover, a work in progress, especially when it comes to pacing. Cherie also gets into addressing race anxiety and confidence and how these are challenges that take time to overcome. The journey is not linear. And she gets into how expectation can lead to frustration and burnout, and how applying the well-known advice of breaking a big goal into smaller pieces is really important. Cherie remains healthy and enthusiastically committed to this goal. Keeping in mind the importance of intermediate goals, Cherie is currently focused on breaking the 21 minutes barrier, which is tantalizingly close. In June of 2023, Women's Running Stories host and producer Cherie Turner closed the chapter on running longer distance races (at least for now), like marathons and ultras, and turned her attention to the 5k. Her goal: break 20 minutes in the 5km. Cherie is currently 54 years old and she has never dipped under 20 minutes at this distance. The closest she's ever gotten was back over a decade ago, when she ran 20:19. This update spans March to May 2024. Part 1 of this series concluded with Cherie setting a baseline time of 21:10 on August 30. Part 2 ended with Cherie learning more about how to train well and some of the lessons she's continuing to work on. In part 3, Cherie discusses how she experienced a non-running injury that took her out of structured training and workouts for 8 weeks but ended up being a healthy reset. Part 4 traces Cherie's return to training and racing, and how she realizes the need to address race anxiety and develop belief in herself. It's not a prerequisite to this episode to listen to the previous episodes in this series, but they do provide valuable details and context. Find the series here. Come along for the journey. With over twenty years in the corporate world, she has worked with Fortune 500 companies, including those in the entertainment, production, and media sectors such as Netflix, Fox, and Disney. In 2020, Sohee released her first book, Mommytracked: How to Take Authentic Risks and Find Success on Your Terms, with the goal of helping ambitious women tap into their inner core throughout the different phases of their lives. She's now the author of a second book, The Inner Game: Secrets of High-Achieving Women for Navigating Work, Life, and Mindset*. In a world where still too few women are represented in senior leadership roles, many of us want to do whatever we can to support high-achieving women. In this conversation, Sohee and I explore what her research and experience indicates that leaders can do to better support women in their careers. Key Points Leaders can support both women and men by framing the larger “why” or North Star. Providing context helps a point of focus to emerge. Do it afraid. Provide support to work through fearful situations with success. When supporting women in building confidence, help them recognize what they've already achieved. Normalize the discussion about financial literacy. Opening the door to dialogue around salary negotiation helps equalize the salary gap. One question can set the tone for better work and life integration. Leaders can proactively ask about boundaries. In episode 92 we imagined situations going perfectly in order to get solid, confidence building mental reps. No mistakes allowed! But we all know mistakes and unexpected things can happen, and it's it best to prepare for them? The answer is yes. There is a time and place for perfect reps and there is a time and place for contingency plans. In this episode, I give guidance on how to do this constructively rather than catastrophize and hope for the best. We incorporate the power of visualization into this as well to further strengthen our ability to carry it out in the moment. You'll feel more confident than ever that you can handle whatever might come up. This means that we don't need to enter performances with so much fear of the unknown. Some people call it mental rehearsal, some visualization and others envisioning. Whatever you call it, high performers know it is a powerful tool to increase your level of preparation and even your skills. Since the brain doesn't distinguish between someone happening in real life or if it's imagined, it's your chance to program your mind and body for what you want to execute. In this episode, we talk about what it is but also tips on how to make it more powerful. Then I give an example of what it might look like. The main tips shared are the following: 1. You are in complete control--the director, nothing happens unless you approve it. 2. Make it positive--everything will go well and as planned. 3. Take your time--use pauses to fill in more details to make it more real. 4. Include all your senses-see, hear, smell, touch, taste 5. Include genuine emotion--rehearse your emotions like any other sense. 6. Use the first person or internal perspective--look out your own eyes rather than watching yourself from a distance. “It's not the absence of self-doubt, but the ongoing resistance to it.” Bear with me in this episode when I share a confidence draining experience.  Luckily I remembered the book, The Confident Mind, by Dr. Nate Zinsser.  In chapter 5 I was reminded about protecting our confidence through setbacks.  So this episode is a bit of a reminder to me of practical things to do to regain your confidence when a big drain occurs.  Things like looking for my daily progress, effort and success and then stopping the looping confidence killing thoughts and replacing them with thoughts that build energy, enthusiasm, and optimism.  Thanks to Seth Johnson for my intro and outro original music. Have you ever stopped to realize that nothing is really a problem unless you think it is a problem? This is why some things can really bother someone else but not bother you. As I work with clients in my private practice, so many things that we think are a problem are actually just normal development. We just don't like how it's going. But it IS totally normal actually. If we can make peace with things not being a problem, we can reduce the negativity and judgment by at least half. And then all that we are left with is something that we want to improve upon. But the part where we make it a problem, is optional. Plateaus are one of those things that are a normal part of development, that no one can escape, and yet we think we are especially deficient just because we are in one. But plateaus are normal. In fact, while it may seem like nothing is happening in our plateaus, nothing could be further from the truth. The spurts of progress that we experience from time to time are only the evidence of all the work that happened in the plateaus. The spurts aren't the progress...they are the evidence that spilled out when that progress finally hit a tipping point where forward movement and integration can be seen in our efforts. Listen in to hear what is happening in the plateaus that is so important. Let's make peace with plateaus. *This episode was inspired by a section in the book The Confident Mind by Dr. Nate Zinsser. "Ugh! Why am I still so nervous?! Why won't those go away?!" Ummmm, well, because you are human and you care about what you are doing so they will probably never go away. But I have good news: You don't need them to go away! If fact, with the right perspective you will see they are actually good and meant to help you! At some point you associated the nervous feeling with something bad. But what if it doesn't mean that at all? What if it just means your body is helping you be energized for whatever come next? Because if it's a roller coaster, you don't wish those nerves away or make it mean bad things are coming. But if it's a dance competition, suddenly we make it mean we are in some kind of danger and our fight or flight system gets activated. The reality is that you WILL feel it, but then you get to decide for yourself what it means. In this episode I help you out by giving you a positive association for the sensations you feel so you need not fear your own system. Ain't nobody got time to fight or resist yourself, so let's teach those butterflies how to fly in formation! What We Discuss with Juliet Funt Juliet explains why reinserting “white space” is vital in our days. This is the time when we can breathe, contemplate, prepare, and create. The name came from looking at the literal white spaces on a lightly scheduled paper calendar and discovering that those open blocks reveal how many opportunities that day could hold. To access it, you take a strategic pause. Stop what you are doing, and white space will rush in.
