In July 2009, Kevin Mather was on a training ride in the foothills of Los Angeles with a group of friends when he was hit by a truck. A few years later, he would win the wheelchair division of the Los Angeles Marathon and finished second at the 2012 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. He was encouraged to get into para archery through a friend at Craig Hospital in Colorado and decided to get serious with the sport in 2017. That paid off for Kevin in 2020, when we won the gold medal at the Paralympic Games.
Dessutom:

This week, Allison, Michelle, and George discussed the brilliant performance of Matthew Richtman and this year's Los Angeles Marathon, where he ran the seventh-fastest time that any American man has ever run in the marathon. After that, we discussed the most recent edition of Barkley Marathon, including how the race unfolded and why George is not a fan.
“My mentality is if I'm going through that high mileage and adding that stress in, I don't want to also have to worry about workouts and putting my body in a hole where I can't recover for a week or two down the road. I think that's very different than how a lot of other people approach training, but for me it's been working.”For the first time in over 30 years, an American man has won the Los Angeles Marathon. On Sunday, Matt Richtman stamped his name in the history books, breaking the tape in 2:07:56—a massive personal best and a statement win in only his second marathon. The 25-year-old ASICS athlete didn't just claim victory; he dominated, pulling away from a world-class field with a decisive move that turned the streets of LA into his own personal proving ground. The performance did have so many people scratching their heads thinking: “Who?” I am here to answer all of those questions.Today, we sit down with Matt to break it all down:– The moment he knew he could win—and the fearless move that sealed it– Why he had no set plan going in but let instinct take over– What's next after a 2:07 breakthrough in just his second marathon– Why his training on Strava doesn't make sense but maybe after he explains it - it makes a bit more sense– Why he's got a traditional and old-school approach to training– And how it feels to be part of the next generation pushing U.S. marathoning forwardThis episode is for anyone who loves the thrill of a bold race and the promise of what's to come.Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Guest: Matthew Richtman | @richtman13 on InstagramSUPPORT OUR SPONSORSKETONE-IQ: Level up your training with Ketone-IQ – a clean shot of energy with no sugar or caffeine. SERIES 3 EPISODE 64: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yeah, I heard it too. I heard him he "shouldn't have left" the White House when his term ended. And I heard him say AT his rally that he wouldn't mind people shooting at the reporters COVERING his rally. And I guess it's shocking. Except he's been saying these things (a little more coded) since 2015, and he said the shooting thing about Liz Cheney last Thursday night. And after all he is going through what the shrinks call “disinhibition” AT the rallies where he loses all sense of what he should say in private not public. But that's not what got me. I heard something I have never heard before. WHEN he said he wouldn't mind people shooting the "fake news," he said he wouldn't mind them shooting THROUGH "the fake news" - THROUGH it - AT him. Doesn't that sound kind of… what's the word? Suicidal? Plus: I understand that we are inside the 48 hour bubble before the election and the pressure is like 887 Atmospheric Units and our rage against this creature and his cult that wants to burn this country to the ground – burn this world to the ground – and our amazement that there is ANYBODY voting for him – that RAGE is at unbearable levels – but… didn't he sound kinda dead yesterday? At one point he was inaudible. At another, in North Carolina, he thought he was in Pennsylvania. Throughout, he sounded exactly like Hal the Computer in the movie “2001” when they unplugged him. PRACTICALLY SPEAKING on the eve of the election, the polls continue to support a Harris victory (size TBD) and this shocking poll where she's up by 3 in Iowa hides an even more shocking number (she's ahead by 20 among women in the whitest part of the midwest). And the reaction to the pollster who published this 21 point swing from June tells you all you need to know about polling. They have previously insisted Ann Selser was an immortal. Now they're saying she's making the rest of them look bad by not tailoring her poll to fit their narrative. B-Block (30:33) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: A Trumpist has vowed to "castrate himself on camera" if Harris wins Iowa (if you're a Trumpist, haven't you already castrated yourself?). Chris Cillizza 2024 mocks everybody who didn't buy the conventional wisdom about the vice presidency (evidently including Chris Cillizza 2020, who had disproved it), and courtesy Tim Alberta in The Atlantic, we find a new reason to hate Trump. This is the real reason he's so mad Biden dropped out. Trump thought he had the perfect nickname for the President - and it's appalling. C-Block (37:48) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: I call it The Annual Day I Get Trapped Inside My Home Day. You know it - and may have seen it on TV yesterday - as "The New York City Marathon." SEASON 2 EPISODE 70: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) ELECTION SCOREBOARD: Democrats and democracy kick MAGA's ass: another Trump off-year disaster as Republicans not only don't flip the Virginia Senate, they've lost the Virginia House! Deep discounts on "PRESIDENT YOUNGKIN 2024" Red Vests! In Ohio, it's a landslide as Issue 1 wins by 57-43 and puts Abortion Rights INTO the Ohio Constitution. And Kentucky Democratic Governor Andy Beshear goes from winning by 4000 votes four years ago, to winning by five points last night. Plus there are expansions of Democratic control in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It's another state-level disaster for Trump's GOP and what's the response of the CNN political director who whored himself out to get Trump live from that disastrous Kaitlan Collins Town Hall? David Chalian says "It's not the Democratic BRAND that's in trouble here, it's Joe Biden that's in trouble here." Actually that's not true either - and CNN should fire this idiot Chalian ASAP because it's CNN that's in trouble here. (9:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Trump managed to combine stochastic terrorism and his Dementia J. Trump/Elmer J. Fudd split personality in one post, insisting someone “must stop” people who don't realize he's worth billions more even than he claims. America's leading Parking Lot Legal Scholar Alina Habba insists they'll be filing for a mistrial because they didn't let Trump talk enough in court (oh, they let him talk enough in court). The good news is, Judge Chutkan shut them down on the latest delaying tactic. They wanted three more months for pre-trial motions; she told them she'll give them two weeks and they'll like it. And as more details emerge of Trump's plan for a military dictatorship, Jeff Clark, the mediocre little man who might be the Attorney General who oversees the transition of the DOJ into the Ministry of Vengeance will finally have to face having his law license suspended. While most reporting stays focused on Sunday's New York Times Biden poll crater, there's a new CNN poll that's a little better. And everybody ignores the work of a private, right-leaning pollster called Cygnal with eye-opening good news for President Biden. Not only has his net approval/disapproval improved a whopping five points in ONE MONTH but the issue seen as sinking Biden – inflation – is beginning to shrink its dominance. A year ago 42% said inflation was the key topic. Two months ago it was still 37%. Now it's down to 31%. The less it is decisive, the more it points to Biden's reelection. Still, Politico reports that after three months the Biden campaign has the results of its almost exclusively positive, issue-focused, non-Trump advertising: It's failed. Completely. The campaign is being urged to re-focus on Trump but remains reluctant, still convinced that Trump will be torn down enough by his Republican challengers (if it doesn't happen at tonight's debate, it won't). And more over, the question has to be raised: if you ARE selling Joe Biden's Greatest Accomplishments, isn't the first thing on that list, the fact that HE beat Trump? Wasn't the most vivid, youthful, meaningful moment of his presidency his Defense-Of-Democracy speech in Philadelphia last year? Isn't the greatest image of Biden, “Dark Brandon?” Joe? You beat him. You're the only one who has. We need you to do it again. And we need you to TELL US THAT. Not only WHY he and the evil he personifies and spreads MUST be defeated, but, bluntly, that you did it before and you will do it again: that you are the man to… beat the ever-loving shit out of him. B-BLOCK (30:49) IN SPORTS: Now begins the blowback. Wisconsin says goodbye and good riddance to no-longer-beloved-son Craig Counsell. The President of Mexico knows who the next manager of the Padres should be. And that drying up of the nourishing milk of ever-increasing TV fees for baseball? It just spread to basketball and hockey, where right now 26 teams are making $0 for telecasts during the 2024-25 season. (35:57) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: The Washington Post followed up on its Trump Dictatorship piece with more good analysis and a Bothsidesist headline that would've looked stupid even above a travel story. There's yet ANOTHER scandal for new 5th String Speaker Mike Johnson. And yesterday he was excoriating Rep. Tlaib for hate and prejudice. A month ago he was promising to turn Gaza into a parking lot. Running was not Ingrid Walters' first love. Nor was it her second, or her third. She didn't run in earnest until she turned 41, at which point she immediately began (quite literally) making up for lost time. After swimming competitively through the first two years of college, she began lifeguarding, and picked up beach running to stay in shape. She enjoyed it enough to accept a college classmate's “dare” to run the 1993 Los Angeles Marathon, which she completed in 4:03:00. After that, she effectively spent two decades away from the sport. At age 33 she ran the LA Marathon again, this time in 3:37 – almost exactly one minute per mile faster than her first attempt. Then, six years later, she pursued marathoning in earnest, running 3:17 at age 39, then 3:07 at age 40. She first broke three hours at the 2014 Chicago Marathon with a 2:54:58, good for third place in the Masters Division and a spot on “The List” of American-born Black female runners who have run a sub-three-hour marathon. Her marathon progression culminated when she, at age 47, won the women's Open division at the 2019 Los Angeles Marathon with a time of 2:48:03. Afterward, medical issues temporarily sidelined her—but as she explains, she might not be done with the sport yet. Walters is also an actress who's appeared in the film “Amistad,” and she has appeared in shows including “Baywatch,” “Scandal,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “Shameless,” and “Parenthood,” as well as on stage at the Geffen Playhouse and in over 50 national commercials.
Meredith and Alex have discussed Alex's running journey, including her recent marathons. In her most recent race, the Los Angeles Marathon, she aimed for a sub-three-hour time but finished in 3:07:05. However, in the Calgary Marathon, Canada's longest running marathon, she improved her time by six minutes, finishing at 3:01:31. Alex shares her strategy for hitting a new personal best and the best ways to prepare for a race, including nutrition and training tips.—The "This is The Last Marathon, I Swear" Feeling— The Run Right After a Marathon— Marathon Mindset Shifts— Training Regimen — Focusing on the Effort vs. the Race— Allowing Yourself to be Disappointed— Showing Up Even When Things Are Out Of Your Control— What Changed from LA to Calgary— Elite Athletes— Aid Stations, Electrolytes, and Carbs— Sodium — Learning What Your Body Needs — Creatine Loading— Endurance Sports & Nutrition Basics Resources Mentioned in This Episode:The Calgary MarathonSkratch Labs Super High Carb LMNT Electrolyte Salt Stick ElectrolyteAfternoon Snack "Pre-Marathon Mindset, Goal Setting, and Traveling to North Carolina and Back"Afternoon Snack "Post-Marathon Reflection: Dealing with Fatigue, a Sub 3 Goal, and an Undulating Course"────────────────────────────Want to work with Tactic Functional Nutrition? In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, Joe calls in from Los Angeles to cover the week's news with David. They review: -Dr. Julie Holland's recent appearance on the The Cannabis Investing Podcast, where she discussed the concept of cannabis being a psychedelic; -Vancouver Island University in British Columbia, Canada, planning to establish a Psychedelic Research Centre, with a focus on the historical and ethical context of psychedelic substances, using a "two eyed seeing" approach that combines Western-style science with Indigenous perspectives; -A group of investors creating a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) to purchase real estate for the purposes of psychedelic therapy, which, if used as the collaborative model we imagine it could be, could solve a lot of problems; -Diplo completing the Los Angeles Marathon in 3 hours and 35 minutes while under a reported 4-5 drops of LSD, and the dismissive spin mainstream media added to the story; and a Rolling Stone article focusing on (and somewhat oversimplifying) the conflicts between the medicalization and decriminalization/legalization camps (can we just do both?). The articles of course lead to much larger discussions: how cannabis has helped David overcome OCD; the need for more transparency and a review system based on abusive behavior in the psychedelic space; the idea of collectivization in therapy models; why we need to agree on ethical foundations; and our general misunderstanding of IP and IP law: was all the criticism of Compass Pathways unwarranted? www.psychedelicstoday.com
This weekend I ran the Los Angeles Marathon with my good buddy Charles Bungert who was attempting to reset the Guiness World Record for heaviest man to complete a marathon at 470lbs (successfully). How does a man that big run 26.2 miles? The same we all should handle our adversities and challenge. We discuss that today.
In every training plan ever created for a marathon, there is a Taper period where you let your body heal before the big race (which is this Sunday for me at the Los Angeles Marathon.). There's a lot you can learn about yourself in the moments before you attack a major goal. We discuss the importance of a taper today (for any goal).

After watching the documentary, Breaking Three Hours: Trailblazing African-American Women Marathoners, we were thrilled to welcome the creator, Tony Reed, who is the founder of the National Black Marathoners Association (NBMA). The NBMA is the country's oldest and largest, not-for-profit organization of Black American distance runners. The objectives are to encourage Black Americans and others to pursue a healthy life-style through long distance running and walking and serve as a vehicle for Black American distance runners across the nation to meet in mass at a single marathon. Tony shares why he wrote and directed the award-winning documentary, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Unbelievably, at the time of the creation of the documentary in 2022, only nine African American women had broken three hours in the marathon. The documentary shares the stories of these incredible trailblazing women: 1. Marilyn Bevans (1975 at Boston (2:55:52) 1979 Boston Marathon (2:49:56) 2. Ella Willis-Glaze 1981 Detroit Free Press Marathon (2:59:29) 1989 Detroit Free Press Marathon (2:38:22) 3. Michele Bush-Cuke 1981 Avon Marathon (2:39:07) 1991 CA International Marathon (2:37:41) 4. Michele Tiff-Hill 1980 Fiesta Bowl Marathon (2:57:14) 1983 Sri Chinmoy Marathon (2:50:19) 5. Ingrid Eugenia Walters 2014 Chicago Marathon (2:54:58) 2019 Los Angeles Marathon (2:48:03) 6. Alisa Harvey 1999 Richmond Marathon (2:49:28) 7. Samia Akbar 2006 New York City Marathon (2:34:14) 8. Sika Henry 2020 Tidewater Striders Marathon (2:57:13) 9. Shawanna White 2011 Kiawah Island Marathon (2:55:30) 2018 One City Marathon (2:45:19) In addition to discussing the documentary, Tony shares more about his own record-setting accomplishments, why representation is so important, and how the running community can better support African American marathoners to ensure more than a handful of women break three hours and beyond in the marathon.
