Who even is Lavina Fielding Anderson?! In this classic deep dive we examine the life of Lavina Fielding Anderson and her contributions to the Mormon academic field. Her story serves as a case study of how far individuals can pressure the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the inside before the institution's immune system responds. She's a powerhouse of a scholar, a pioneer in feminist Mormon studies, and an advocate for those who've survived ecclesiastical abuse. The Mormon Alliance was the organization Lavina formed with Janice Allred to collect and publish survivor's stories and advocate on their behalf. Both suffered gruelling and abusive disciplinary processes for their advocacy attempting to reform Mormon practices and policies. History repeats itself and the timeline of Protect LDS Children and Sam Young was telegraphed by the experiences of Anderson, Allred, and the Mormon Alliance. We finish the episode with a review of Erin Brockovich and a happy environmental news item from Liverpool.  Correction: At about an hour and a half in, Shannon referenced Victor Frankl when she meant Elie Wiesel.    Show Notes:  https://www.jstor.org/stable/45228305?seq=10#metadata_info_tab_contents https://sunstone.org/wp-content/uploads/sbi/issues/130.pdf https://web.archive.org/web/20120215064851/https://www.sunstonemagazine.com/pdf/092-65-79.pdf https://www.dialoguejournal.com/articles/lavina-fielding-anderson-mercy-without-end-toward-a-more-inclusive-church/ https://www.dialoguejournal.com/articles/the-lds-intellectual-community-and-church-leadership-a-contemporary-chronology/#pdf-wrap https://www.dialoguejournal.com/issues/spring-1993/ https://web.archive.org/web/20080123061329/http://mormonalliance.org/casereports/casereports.htm https://mormon-alliance.org/SiteMap.htm https://mormon-alliance.org/definitions.htm https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Mormonism_and_Church_discipline/Scholars/Does_the_Church_excommunicate_historians   MOGP: Erin Brockovich: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195685/?ref_=tttr_tr_tt    Hinkley Groundwater Contamination: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hinkley_groundwater_contamination    Erin Brockovich: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erin_Brockovich    Happy news:  https://www.goodnewsnetwork.org/once-biologically-dead-the-river-mersey-in-england-is-best-environmental-story-in-europe/?fbclid=IwAR2UT3EKTfa-CMY9PZjQXcI8gJ8auRQ5VG4su6sq4DhSZ5CnD7iQqLsNahc   Other Appearances:    Come see us on Aron Ra's YouTube channel! The long-standing practice of having lay bishops interview teens and ask them questions about their faith and their lives, including any sexual activity, has come under fire in recent years. A group called “Protect LDS Children” urged the church to stop the practice, citing examples of bishops who were insensitive and even abusive. Church leaders made changes, allowing, for instance, those being interviewed to have a second adult with them in these conversations. But critics and some mental health experts maintain the sessions should cease altogether. Jennifer Roach, a therapist, recent Latter-day Saint convert and a victim of clergy abuse herself, believes the interviews serve a vital purpose. She shares her views on this week’s show.

This week on SarahTalk... Sam Young is a father of 6 daughters, a business owner, and has served in various roles in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints including (but not limited to) bishop, bishopric counselor, ward mission leader, stake public affairs director, and seminary teacher.  In the summer of 2017, Sam learned that his daughter was regularly subjected to sexually explicit questions from age 12 to 17 during regular interviews with the bishop of their congregation.  These meetings generally happen once or twice a year in a private, closed-door, one-on-one setting where children are asked a series of questions to determine "worthiness".  Sam started Protect LDS Children as a movement to influence changes to the policy ensuring that no child ever has to undergo these meetings without another trusted adult in the room. Due to the news of Sam Young's excommunication, we are rereleasing episode 55 from February 2015. Sam Young organized "Protect LDS Children". You can find out more by going here: http://protectldschildren.org ..... This week the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has once again been in the news in regards to the excommunication of one of their own: this time it’s John Dehlin of Mormon Stories – only months after the excommunication of Kate Kelly of Ordain Women.  There have been lesser, yet still painful ramifications (losing callings, not being able to attain temple recommends, disfellowshipment, etc.) for members of the church on a global level as we struggle with both historical, doctrinal and social issues we may not all agree on.  This is having a significant impact in many stake, ward and family systems – with frustration, anger and relationship struggles becoming unfortunate, yet common happenings. On the evening of the news that John Dehlin was excommunicated, Natasha Helfer Parker, Jennifer Finlayson-Fife, Joanna Brooks, Dan Wotherspoon, and Brian Dillman got together via Skype audio chat to discuss various ways they personally cope with the kinds of distress such things cause, and perspectives that help heal them in times of difficulty. Their sharing is this podcast episode, which is being co-released by Mormon Matters, Rational Faiths podcast, and Mormon Mental Health podcasts. How might we experience and understand our anger in healthy ways? How do we not let our emotions get the better of us and block out wider perspectives that likely would serve us better for the long haul? Can historical and sociological frameworks help us see these recent events in greater context, help us understand ways to move forward rather than repeat negative cycles? Chris Wei interviews journalist Kristina Smith and filmmaker Spencer Allred about their collaborative project, THE HUSHED ONES, a documentary film which examines the issue of sexual abuse in the LDS Church by looking closely at the McKenna Denson story and the #ProtectLDSChildren movement. They explain some of the decisions they’re making as documentarians with regard to narrative structure, artistic expression, journalistic ethics, and socioreligious activism; they explore the difficulty in digging into systemic issues with nuance and balance; and they discuss generally what they hope to accomplish—and who they hope to reach—with the project.

Sam Young is a Mormon on a mission. He wants bishops’ one-on-one interviews with Latter-day Saint youths to end. He wants the sometimes sexually explicit “worthiness” questions they are asked in these private sessions to cease. To propel his cause, he formed a group, Protect LDS Children, launched an online petition and led a march to church headquarters to deliver tens of thousands of supportive signatures. He even staged a three-week hunger strike to draw attention to the issue. This past Sunday, however, this former bishop appeared at a “disciplinary council” before his local lay leaders, who argue his actions have crossed a line by opposing not only church policy but also church policymakers. As he faces the prospect of excommunication, the question now is: Will Sam Young remain a Mormon on a mission? In this week’s podcast, Young discusses what took place at his hearing, how the accusations against him, to his mind, misinterpret his actions, why he undertook this fight, and why he will continue to work for change, preferably with the church’s help, whether he is in the faith — which is his hope — or out of it.

On this episode, we begin a 3-part deconstruction of the Book of Abraham. We begin with the cultural realm captivated by Egyptian Antiquities with Napoleon’s discoveries and how such discoveries influenced minds in 19th-century America. We trace collections of papyri and artifacts being studied and exhibited all over the country right in Joseph Smith’s back yard. We briefly cover how the Church acquired the Egyptian Antiquities collection of mummies and papyri which later became the Book of Abraham as well as the translation process. After that we continue to follow the line of possession of the collection and how it came into the possession of the Brighamite LDS Church in November of 1967. After that we have on Jake Farr-Wharton of iFriends to talk about a recent article from the Sidney Morning Herald covering the Protect LDS Children campaign. Jake is followed by a brief “Angel’s Trumpet” segment about a recent headline from Mormon-newsroom.org telling of the Church’s apology for institutionalized and doctrinal racism. On this episode, we dive into the world of Masonry and Mormonism. In 1842, Joseph ascended to Master Mason “at-sight,” and seven weeks later revealed his Temple Endowment ceremony. If we view more of Joseph Smith’s timeline, we find Masonry was highly influential on the prophet from his earliest years, long before the Book of Mormon ever entered the public sphere. As it currently stands, Bishops frequently ask sexually explicit questions during regular interviews in a child’s development, one-on-one, behind closed doors, perpetuating a cycle of shame and creating situations where sexual grooming is normalized.
