Editor's note: Beacon was created in 1913 from Matteawan and Fishkill Landing. 150 Years Ago (January 1875) When a 54-year-old employee of the Glenham Company died, it was discovered he had $8,000 [about $230,000 today] on deposit at five banks in New York City. He left the money to his sister's children in Ireland except for $100 [$2,900] bequeathed to his landlady. Although navigation on the Hudson River stopped on Jan. 4 because of the ice, the ferry was still running between Newburgh and Fishkill Landing. In a single day, Thomas N. Avery & Co. shipped 815,000 paper bags from its factory in Fishkill Landing. The Rev. Jabez Marshall, pastor of the Pilgrim Baptist Church in Matteawan, answered a call to lead the church at Ludingtonville, a hamlet in the Town of Kent. The "arithmetic man" at the Newburgh Journal calculated the distance between the Newburgh dock and Dutchess Junction as 2 miles and 22 feet. The distance between the Dutchess Junction and Fishkill Landing train stations was 1.57 miles. William Morgan, who had been arrested at the Fishkill Landing depot for stealing a $50 government bond, was sentenced to 60 days in jail. Nathaniel Cerine of Matteawan lost his brood of Dorking hens to thieves. The Matteawan Fire Department called a community meeting to explain its need for a steam fire engine. Two factory owners pledged $1,000 [$29,000] and residents raised $800 [$23,000]. Mr. Alden of the rubber works at Wiccopee donated $300 [$8,600] and offered to provide the hose at cost. Justice Barnard refused to sanction a disciplinary plan adopted by the Fishkill school board, saying he objected to sending misbehaving students to jail or the poorhouse but was open to other places of confinement. Diphtheria killed several Matteawan residents. Dewitt Hall was seriously injured while crossing Mountain Lane when he was run down by a sled. An early morning fire at Melham's in Matteawan destroyed $5,000 [$143,000] worth of shoes. Beacon Crossings An exhibit at the Beacon Historical Society that continues through March highlights the city's bridges, including crossings at East Main Street, Churchill Street, Wolcott Avenue, Long Dock Park and Dennings Point, as well as the historic Tioronda and Bridge Street/Groveville bridges and two former railroad bridges at Sucker Falls and Rocky Glen. Shown here are some of the 315 local men who worked during the Great Depression to build the Wolcott Bridge, notable for its Egyptian and Art Deco motifs. Completed in 1933, it was nicknamed the Cooperation Bridge because it required a partnership between the city and state. The historical society, at 61 Leonard St., is open from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursdays and 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. See beaconhistorical.org. 125 Years Ago (January 1900) After a three-day trial, a jury ruled that Mrs. Lillian Ash of Fishkill Landing had to pay $15,000 [$564,000] in damages to malvina Prunier of Vermont for alienation of the affections of Frederick Prunier, 32. She had asked for $75,000 [$2.8 million]. According to the Vermont Phoenix, Frederick Prunier was a nurse who cared for William Campbell, a wallpaper manufacturer, during his last days. In his will, Campbell left nearly $1 million [$38 million] to Ash, who had been his housekeeper and whom he had hoped to marry, if he could persuade her husband to divorce her. Prunier was arrested for non-support and allegations he attempted to kidnap one of his children but successfully appealed to Gov. Theodore Roosevelt to avoid extradition to Vermont. Mr. Oakes, the photographer, and his wife welcomed a 12-pound baby girl. According to the Fishkill Standard, August Dondero, a "relic hunter" in Matteawan, purchased a black walnut and brass piano from James McIlravy of Cold Spring. Made by J.H. & M. Leib of New Haven and New York around 1785, it was formerly located in the Longfield House on Market Street in Cold Spring. Inside the piano, Dondero found a photo of Mr. Longfield and a page of sheet music from 1819 ...

Show Notes: Aran Shetterly, a self-professed late bloomer, took a year off in the middle of his studies to pursue an Echoing Green fellowship, which allowed him to set up a nonprofit in Costa Rica to link volunteers to environmental organizations there. He then decided to pursue a master's in American and New England studies from the University of Southern Maine. However, after completing his masters, he realized he needed to explore the world in a different way. He moved to New York and worked as an editorial assistant. A year later, he met an old school friend who founded an internet startup called Comet Systems. Aran recounts his experiences in the world of internet ethics and the impact of internet spyware on the US. He recalls when he was on his way to a meeting with Yahoo to discuss a partnership when he learned that Comet Systems was accused of creating spyware. At Yahoo he was given a lecture on internet ethics. Researching Castro's Rebellion and The Fight Against It Aran talks about a trip to Cuba where he learns about Fidel Castro's rebellion and the support of internationals during the Spanish Civil War. He met William Morgan, who was a key figure in the fight against Castro. This meeting inspired Aran to leave Comet Systems and start writing his book. Upon returning from the trip, Aran searched for information about Morgan and sent a Freedom of Information Act request to the CIA. He receives two inches of redacted documents, which he uses to write his first book, "The Americano Fighting with Castro for Cuba's Freedom." Aran summarizes the story and how Morgan played a double agent role in uncovering a plot to topple Castro, but later turned against the revolution as it turned communist. Aran recounts his six-month stay in Cuba, where he worked on two projects: setting up an exchange of artists between Maine and Cuba, and conducting research on the Kennedy assassination. He was often followed by officials from the interior ministry and almost ended up in jail. He also spent time in Miami researching the revolutionaries who were excluded from Castro's rebellion. He spent time researching the Kennedy assassination investigation. From Mexico to the Greensboro Massacre Aran and his wife Margo met while working at Comet Systems. They fell in love and decided to launch an English language magazine and website called Inside Mexico, which they launched in Mexico City in 2005. He talks about journalists they worked with and stories they covered, and how the magazine finally came to an end. After ten years in Mexico, they were drawn back to the U.S. when Margo's book proposal was optioned by a production company. The book was a success, and the couple had to come back to help promote it. In 2015, he met Reverend Nelson Johnson and Joyce Johnson, who told the story of the Greensboro massacre, a civil rights activist and Black Power leader who were trying to organize textile mills in North Carolina. The Greensboro massacre occurred when Neo Nazis and Klansmen shot and killed five and injured 10 workers during a march to educate workers about the divisive nature of the Ku Klux Klan. Morningside - An FBI Investigation and a Hole in the Story Aran's latest book, Morningside, is about the Greensboro shooting investigation, which he gained access to through interviews with FBI agent Cecil Moses. Moses provided valuable insights into the FBI's perspective and the importance of the Greensboro investigation in reclaiming some esteem in American society. The book also explores the truth and reconciliation process, which was the first place in the United States to bring the South African model to work out the events surrounding the shooting. Aran found that there was a misunderstanding about the history that still keeps people in Greensboro divided. He discovered that the narratives set about who's to blame for the shooting were deeply entrenched within the social community and the extent to which access to one's tribe depends on adhering to a certain narrative. This information was extremely informative and showed how difficult some divides are and how entrenched they are. Aran believes that much work needs to be done to work out these hermetic narratives that keep people on different sides of important historical moments. He believes that the book will help readers understand the complex and interconnected nature of the Greensboro shooting and the ongoing struggle to reconcile different perspectives on important historical moments. Harvard Professors and Courses of Influence Aran discusses his experiences at Harvard and how his fellow students and friends were hugely influential. He highlights three standout professors who made interdisciplinary connections in his work, which appealed to his sensibility: Stephen J. Gould, Philip Fisher in the English Department, and Bradley Epps in the Romance Language Department. Children's flight of hope is a nonprofit organization based here in sunny North Carolina, which has a mission of providing flights for essential, specialized life changing and life saving medical care for children in need, these flights are amazing in that they bring children who otherwise might not be able to travel to centers of excellence around the United States, where they can receive innovative, cutting edge and in some cases, miraculous care. These flights are provided to children and their families at no cost, which goes a huge way toward easing the emotional and financial burden on families. I had the privilege of serving on the board of children's flight of hope many years ago, I served for several years following the organization's inauguration. In the late 90s, the organization has grown and has evolved to the point where it is now partnering with major air carriers to provide this life saving transportation for pediatric patients. You can learn more about the work of children's flight of hope at their website, which is children's flight of hope.org, and children's flight of hope is all spelled out together as one word. This week on The Business of Open Source, I have an episode recorded on site at KubeCon EU in Paris with William Morgan, CEO of Buoyant. We had a fabulous conversation, which touched on some touchy subjects, including Buoyant's slightly changing relationship with Linkerd. But we talked about:Being an open source mercenary, but also being dedicated to making Linkerd a ‘proper' open source projectFeeling like open source was table stakes for a company in the space Buoyant plays in. This is an under-appreciated reason for being an open source company — you feel like it's just expected in the market you play in, so you do. Waiting too long (or is it too long?) to commercializeStarting out by selling support, but the problem with that because Linkerd worked well and people kept saying that they didn't need support because they never had problemsCompeting against Istio, which was backed by the Google engine and how that made Linkerd / Buoyant an underdog (or cockroach). For those of you who haven't been following Linkerd / Buoyant… Buoyant recently announced that they would be doing edge releases for Linkerd, but not stable releases. We talked about why they made this change and how the ecosystem responded. Check out the full episode!

William Morgan, founder of the Linkerd service mesh and CEO of Bouyant, joins SE Radio's Robert Blumen for a discussion of sidecars, service mesh, and a forthcoming enhancement to kubernetes to support sidecars natively. The conversation explores the origin of sidecars, sidecars and service mesh, and migrating service mesh to kubernetes. They take a deep dive into some aspects of running service mesh on kubernetes, the difficulties in running a sidecar container in a pod, and Kubernetes Enhancement Proposal (KEP) 753, which is intended to provide better native support for sidecar containers. William also gives some thoughts on the continuing relevance of service mesh.

When William Morgan's manuscript "Illustrations of Masonry" was finally published, it was really kind of boring. Meet the experts! Dr. Leah DashDr. Leah Dash is a Chiropractic Physician who specializes in women's and children's health. Dr. Edgar EverettLike many of you, Dr. Edgar Everett III is driven to bring to his practice members a caring, inspiring and solution-based style of health care. Since being in practice he has seen the Chiropractic landscape shift dramatically. People need us more and more. What has changed so much? Is it that the old healthcare model is broken? Dr. Everett attended Illinois State University before Logan College of Chiropractic. Over the past decade of serving his practice members, volunteering at community clinics, mentoring Chiropractic students, and public speaking, his views on the solutions have been molded. Edgar has come to understand that having an impact on your community comes from compassion, hard work, and intelligent decision making. Chiropractic is a way of life. In a sense, Andras Jones has always lived in a world that overlaps with dreaming. His father was a dream researcher. In the 1980s, Andras starred in ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street 4' (he also appeared on 'Saved By The Bell' and in films with Drew Barrymore, Alice Cooper and Jeffrey Combs). All the while, he has been conjuring his own world with a guitar and a head full of clever, funny, angry songs. In this episode of ‘All Your Days,' we join Andras's journey, exploring the triumphs and frustrations of wrangling with dreams and, as a writer about synchronicity, how in giving attention to different ways of perceiving the "real" world Andras has redefined his own dream and its pursuit. In this episode, we delve into one of the oldest and most mysterious fraternal organizations - The Freemasons. Since its inception, Freemasonry has been clouded in speculation. It's been said that the organization is associated with the Illuminati, the Knights Templar, satanism, cult practices, and even extraterrestrials. Their members are sworn to secrecy from telling outsiders anything about what goes on in the Masonic Lodges. Legend has it that in 1826, when a man named William Morgan threatened to publicly expose the Freemason's secrets, he was arrested on a petty crime and never seen again. So, what is Freemasonry? There's a lot of misconceptions about it floating around … but if you are willing to dig a little, there is also a lot of truth! Are the Freemasons a cult? Should Christians be a part of this secretive organization?

The zero trust approach can be applied to almost every technology choice in the modern enterprise, and Kubernetes is no exception. For Kubernetes network security particularly, adopting a zero trust model involves some radical changes, including moving from a security perimeter defined by firewalls, IP addresses, and cluster boundaries to a granular approach that treats the network itself as adversarial and moves the security boundary down to the pod level. William will discuss why the zero trust approach is increasingly necessary for comprehensive Kubernetes security, the dos and don'ts when adopting Kubernetes, the implications for operators and security teams, and where tooling like service mesh plays a role. If you haven't listened to Part One from last week go back and do that, we'll wait...ok, good, you're caught up. We are joined again by author and journalist Michael Sallah to discuss William Morgan's rise to international fame following his thrilling turn as a double agent for Castro to thwart an international coup attempt. William Morgan's rise to fame occurs at the same time as the Castro government turns towards socialism and an alliance with the Soviet Union. Morgan, an avowed anti-communist, moves against Castro and begins raising his own army only to be discovered. We discuss Michael's excellent book Yankee Comandante: The Untold Story of Courage, Passion and One American's Fight to Liberate Cuba (2019). Michael details William's demise and the fallout of his downfall to his rebel wife, Olga. Buy Michael's book here, a truly fantastic read. https://www.amazon.com/Yankee-Comandante-Courage-Americans-Liberate/dp/0762792876 We're rejoined by writer and historian Tony Perrottet. Tony takes us inside Fidel Castro's initially warm reception by Americans and his trip to the States to his turn as villain when he aligns with the Soviets leading to the Cuban Missile Crisis and over 60 years as an enemy of the United States. We discuss his many trips to Cuba, his great podcast "History Unzipped" and the failed foreign policies of the US in the 1950s. Buy Cuba Libre! here. http://tonyperrottet.com/cubalibre/ University of Dayton history professor and Cuban filmmaker Juan Santamarina joins to analyze Castro's Machiavellian decision making process following the Cuban Revolution and the failure of the Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961.
