When we go out to the cold, we layer. I love layers. I put on thermals, hoodies, coats, jackets, hats and gloves. I love layers in seven layer dip and I love layers in lasagna. Sometimes, layers aren't helpful. Sometimes, we layer emotions, only to amplify the emotions and make them worse. We get frustrated over being frustrated. Mad about being mad. Irritated about being irritated. In these scenarios, layering isn't helpful. In today's podcast, we talk about our emotional layers and how to stop layering. We talk about being aware, watching ourselves and paying attention to when we do this. We talk about offering self-compassion, which is so hard to do sometimes. And we talk about getting to the truth. Today's podcast will help you recognize when you may be layering your emotional experience and how to stop! Listen In! Shine!LDS AND MEDIUM PODCAST BACKGROUND:I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS for short. All my life I felt awkward and out of place, not because of my religion, but because of my spiritual gifts. It was hard to combine the idea of what first seemed like two separate worlds. So my whole life I have tried. I have learnt more about my gifts, and stayed faithful to my faith. But then I heard people left the church because it seems impossible to combine the two. So I am here, to try and mend the rift. To show that it is possible to be both LDS and to have, and use, our spiritual gifts. I am not alone on this journey, but my sister, who just is waking up to her spiritual gifts is by my side and she will also share her story.Jesus Christ, our older brother, was a healer. He asked us to love one another. So let´s follow in his footsteps. Please join me on this journey, let´s make a community of strong spiritual LDS, or whatever religion you belong to, and all work together to make this world a better place. If you like what I do, then you can find me here:https://linktr.ee/ldsandmediumIf you have words of support or stories that you anonymously want me to share please write me at ldsandmedium@gmail.com. Come Follow Me Podcast for Kids! We are an LDS primary podcast that studies the Old Testament in a way for older primary children. This week we are learning: I can faithfully keep my covenants. In the book of Hosea, the Lord compared His covenants with the Israelites to a marriage. Despite the Israelites' unfaithfulness, He still loved them and wanted them to return. We will discuss our covenants and how important they are. We will also help the children understand that the covenants we make with the Lord are meant to last forever. We discuss Joel's prophecies about the last days and how his words align with President Russel M Nelson. We are a primary prodcast that follows the Come Follow Me Manual for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, my servants, that inasmuch as you have forgivine one another your trespasses, even so I, the Lord, forgive you. Nelson, April 2022 general conference). In this episode David and Scott discuss forgiveness, and specifically forgiving others, including oneself. Can the atonement of Jesus Christ really assist me in forgiving others? Join us and see/“feel” for yourself.
It's been a minute, but we're back! Talking about what we did over the summer, is this finally the picture of Joseph Smith we've been waiting for? Who is the oldest prophet ever? Plus a controversial AP article. Hope you enjoy!
What a fun grouping of topics! We do a relatively long deep-dive into the history of how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has dealt with organic evolution and how the stance has changed over time. Of course, the Book of Mormon is predicated on eugenics, as is the history of Utah, so we also include this more controversial subject as it is related. Then we dive into Bruce R. McConkie's Millennial Messiah where he continues to harp on his favorite topic, the end times. Turns out the book title is very revealing of the subject matter. We wrap the episode with a new press release from the White House about government-funded research. The Book of Mormon can strengthen faith and improve your life, and Lane Williams shared that message in his BYU-Idaho devotional address. "You know, when you are asked to speak in devotional, they ask you to think of something that matters and might matter to students,” Williams said in an interview with BYU-Idaho Radio. “And there are a lot of the reasons that The Book of Mormon, which is my topic, matters to me." In his devotional address, Williams talked about his father's life and how he taught Williams the importance of The Book of Mormon. He said they would often go to the mountains and even Yellowstone to relieve stress and sometimes read from the scriptures. “Under the gentle lights, we'd read the Book of Mormon. I don't remember much of what we read, but I remember what I felt -- a quiet assurance of the truth of this book,” Williams said. In the interview, Williams also mentioned how he has noticed a difference between students who read The Book of Mormon every day and those who do not. "There is something amazing about people who read The Book of Mormon every day,” Williams said. “There is a confidence, lightness and brightness, dare I say it, there is an attractiveness about them. They are their best selves and seem happier." Williams reflected upon President Russel M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' invitation to think of how The Book of Mormon has changed your life, and how different life would be without it. "I actually kind of shudder to think where I would be without The Book of Mormon, those are the reasons why I picked my topic." Williams said. In the devotional address, Williams gives a few ways to kickstart better reading and studying experiences with The Book of Mormon by picking a theme and taking notes on it. He shared the steps he took to better understand prayer. First, he realized every Book of Mormon chapter has details about prayer, on average, he said, about 2 ½ times. Then he noticed that prayers are frequently described as “cries unto the Lord,” which denotes a real intent and deep emotion. After that, Williams saw that prayers to resist temptation were common, and finally described how he marveled at the realization that Jesus' ministry in the Americas was framed by prayer more than any other action. “I marveled because Jesus is the son of God. He can do basically anything to help these people, but he chose to pray for them – that's how important and effectual prayer can be,” he said.

Joe and Smith introduce each other and their podcast. The guys discuss some early LDS lore and invent a new early saint called W.W. Wphelps, who may have had a hand in inventing the World Wide Web. Joe notices his tendency to want definitive truth when learning something new. The guys are going to use swear words and sometimes offend, but not for the sake of being offensive. Joe and Smith are pretty convinced that they are the worst people, self-esteem is not their strong suit, but they're working on it. The guys bring up how they still hang on to some doctrines from the church, like Brian Regan. Smith says that he wants the podcast to help people who feel like they're on the outside who may be dealing with some trauma and sadness from their families and from the church. The guys started watching Under the Banner of Heaven (2022), aka Garfield, on Hulu. Joe feels like he has only ever won one fight with the church and that it was deciding not to go anymore. The guys give an overview of the process of having one's name removed from the church's records. The BOM has 239 chapters. Goddammit. Smith denies being a Star Wars fanboy, but he really is. The guys bare their testimony that the BOM was written by a fraud (JS) and written for purposes such as gaining power and money. It's a secret combination. They devolve into some righteous indignation toward JS, but they steer out of it by singing a hymn. Smith feels like the overwhelming pressure for perfection in the church conditioned him to lie, while Joe feels like he told the truth and was just “less than”. The guys notice that it may be easier to stay in the church if you don't take the church very seriously. Smith reads us the title page, which is super confusing. The guys try to piece together some of the details but give up and refer the listener to people like Jeremy Runnells and John Dehlin, aka Jahndalyn. Smith points out how easy it is to get distracted by the levels of details and minutia in the BOM, but that it's all made up. The guys read the introduction to the BOM, which essentially positions itself as Bible fanfiction. Smith tells about getting duped by fake Harry Potter fanfiction before book 5. Russel M Nelson is a bastard. The guys take some issue with the church adding the word “among” to the intro page. Smith knows a lot about the temple, but he'll get into that later. Smith talks about how he tried to “make up” for the church's sexism by elevating women to a higher level. In the October 2021 General Conference, President Nelson mentioned the safest place to be when trials come is "inside your temple covenants." What does it mean to live inside your temple covenants? This was the question posed to a group of Latter-day Saint women as we gathered together to discuss. This episode is my takeaways from that discussion, which I think will help all of us strengthen our spiritual foundations, understand our identities, and connect with the Spirit. I know many blessings have come into my life since this discussion, and I don't think it's a coincidence. Full show notes Schedule a free session
Cody Crabb knows how this sounds. In today's increasingly secular environment, saying you are religious sounds like you are saying you believe in aliens. Saying you are a progressive Mormon sounds like you either don't know what progressivism is or you don't know what Mormons believe. The Mormon church (they're actually moving away from the term "Mormon" and towards the "Church of the Latter-Day Saints," or LDS for short) isn't exactly known for being the most progressive institution. Same-sex marriages are not recognized by the church, Brigham Young was a racist, Black people were not allowed to be priests in the LDS church until the 1970s. So how do you exist as a member of the LDS church as a progressive person who doesn't see a difference between your romantic relationship and that of your gay friends? As someone who believes in fighting racism? But some things are changing. Religions everywhere are losing young people, and they know they have to adapt or risk drifting into irrelevancy. There's only so much that religions can do when they stand so at odds with the direction the rest of society is going in. In the LDS church, this is where the phenomenon of modern revelation comes in. At any given moment, there is a living prophet in the church, and the current guy, as of 2018, is a former heart surgeon named Russell M. Nelson, who can update the handbook and stances of the church to fit modern-day values. Their job is to interpret the word of God. For example, a recent prophet said that the church was going to require the children of gay parents to be baptized at the age of 18, whereas you usually get baptized when you are 8 years old. There was a huge backlash to this inside and outside the church and after that backlash, the church revised its guidelines to allow everyone to be baptized at 8 years old. Obviously a lot of these issues cause a ton of cognitive dissonance as a progressive person, and Cody talks about how for him, so much of the teachings of the church are about clothing the naked and feeding the hungry, which is exactly in line with progressivism. For the things that feel contradictory, you just have to believe in slow, incremental change, and realize that some things are always going to have to go "on the shelf." Recently John Dehlin had lunch with a mid-level Mormon church leader along the Wasatch front who was eager to share insider information regarding the statistical and programmatic health of the Mormon church since the COVID-19 epidemic. Topics that were covered include: - The pervasiveness of "faith crisis" issues within Mormon stakes and wards. - The rise of conservative/fundamentalist/"Prepper"/"Trumpers"/anti-vaxxers/Q-Anoners as a source of disaffection from the Mormon church. - Attempts to increase the involvement of women. - How post-COVID Mormon apathy has led to a decline in church activity. - The rise of "PIMO" Mormons (Physically in, mentally out). - The decline of the Mormon youth programs, with a dramatic decline in young men church participation and mission service. The leader was willing to share activity statistics within his stake to demonstrate the post-COVID decline. Finally, the source was willing to share information regarding three significant changes at Mormon church headquarters: - The dramatic rise in temple building since Russel M. Nelson became the Mormon prophet, and the effect this is having on the temple department. - A new Mormon temple prep course that will soon be released. - Significant upcoming changes regarding 1 on 1 youth interviews. ————— We are 100% donor funded! A conversation with a client inspired these thoughts about how sometimes we look "beyond" the Spirit. But feeling the Spirit can be easy and simple. Don't miss the Spirit because you are looking for something more complicated. The scriptures don't really describe HOW people feel the scriptures, which I talk about at length with lots of scripture references. Then I give ideas on how you might feel the spirit that you could easily overlook. Full Show Notes Schedule a free session with me!
Pornography. It's an ugly word. And most of us want to avoid even thinking about the word, let alone speaking the word and discussing the trauma it can bring into a life. But in today's episode, Karen leads three Life Coaches in a discussion about the power we gain when we muster the courage to talk about the plague of pornography. Talking about it leads to finding the answers that help us to guard against it in our personal lives, in our families, and in our society as a whole. We ARE at war, and it's a war that involves our souls. We can only fight battles successfully if we know the enemy and the weapons that enemy is using. And one of Satan's most powerful weapons today is pornography. One church leader was qouted recently as saying that the worst thing about pornography is that it offends the Spirit. Our prophet has told us that “in the coming days it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”*Join us and learn ways that you can maintain a constant connection to the influence of the Holy Ghost; guard against pornography; and find healing from the damage it may have already created in your life. With tools, with knowledge, and with the Savior at our side, everyone can be strengthened and healed and find the power and peace we all need to thrive in today's world. *Russel M. In the October 2021 Conference, President Russel M. Nelson issued the call to Latter-day Saints to attend the temple more often as a means of fortifying our spiritual foundations in these difficult and unprecedented times. But if someone were to ask you how you feel about attending the temple, what would be your response? Are you one who loves serving in the temple and attends regularly or does temple attendance feel like just another task to check off your list? While some feel great peace and power in the temple, others confess to feeling anxiety, overwhelm, or even loss when in the temple. In this Still Rowing Short, host Tara McCausland addresses some of the real challenges we might face with temple attendance and despite these challenges, how we might navigate those obstacles in order to make temple attendance a greater priority in our lives. She also shares the associated blessings promised to us as individuals and families as we heed our prophet's call to go to the temple more often. The heavens are open. During times of trial it is hard to see them, but they are there. In this meditation, we allow ourselves to see and welcome open heavens by tearing down what has been blocking them from our view. Music provided by Addison Kirk. References: “With reverence and gratitude, we as His Apostles invite all to know—as we do—that the heavens are open” (Restoration Proclamation, paragraph 9). “Duty…[is] to be like unto Moses...yea, to be a seer, a revelator, a translator, and a prophet” (D&C 107:91-92) And it comes from the apostles who are, “equal in authority and power [to the prophet and his councilors]” (D&C 107:24) “Your prayers, fasting, time in the scriptures, service in the temple, and family history work will open the heavens to you” (Russel M. Nelson, Spiritual Treasures, October 2019). “The heavens are just as open to women who are endowed with God's power flowing from their priesthood covenants as they are to men who bear the priesthood” (Russel M. Nelson, “Spiritual Treasures”, October 2019). “To be sure, there may be times when you feel as though the heavens are closed. But I promise that as you continue to be obedient, expressing gratitude for every blessing the Lord gives you, and as you patiently honor the Lord's timetable, you will be given the knowledge and understanding you seek. Every blessing the Lord has for you—even miracles—will follow. That is what personal revelation will do for you” (Russel M. Nelson, “Revelation for the Church, Revelation for Our Lives,” April 2018).”

Is it challenging to see the light at the end of the tunnel? In this meditation, we scan our lives to find the good, to find the small rewards on the challenging path of hastening the work. Music is provided by Addison Kirk. References: “I have rejoiced as [the Lord] has directed and executed the hastening of His work—even during a global pandemic” (Russel M. Nelson, Welcome Message, April 2021) “Bang ups and hang ups” (Oh, the Places You'll Go) “heaven is grander and broader and more inclusive than most people…[suppose]” (Come Follow Me 2021 for Individuals and Families, pg. 116) “forever and ever” (D&C 76:62)
Perfectionism can get us into all or nothing thinking. But, the little things do matter. In this meditation we release our self-criticism and allow ourselves to celebrate the little things. Music provided by Addision Kirk. References: “Here in mortality, perfection is still pending” (Russel M. Nelson) “...strip [yourself] from jealousies and fears, and humble [yourself] before [the Lord]” (D&C 67:10) “Our only hope for true perfection is in receiving it as a gift from heaven—we can't “earn” it” (Jeffery R. Holland, “Be Ye Therefore Perfect-Eventually”). “...the grace of Christ offers us...salvation from...own persistent self-criticism” (Jeffery R. Holland, “Be Ye Therefore Perfect-Eventually”). “...continue in patience until [we] are perfected” (D&C 67:13). “...no man had seen God...except quickened by the Spirit of God…” (D&C 67:11) “it is not too much...to ask us to be a little more godlike in little things…” (Jeffery R. Holland, “Be Ye Therefore Perfect-Eventually”).

Today’s micro show is a reminder to aim lower. Sounds crazy and counterintuitive for sure, but it the secret (in my opinion) to showing up as a creative in a noisy and competitive world. The minute you begin to intentionally practice imperfection is the minute you can start doing the work you were meant to do with expectations that produce results! Oxford defines imperfection as the state of being faulty or incomplete. I don't like that definition, so I’d like to submit one of my own … Imperfection is state of being free to grow towards a higher or more complete version of oneself. I have learned after years of practice that an expectation of imperfection is actually super healthy. I will share an early and more recent story to illustrate this. I’m also sharing wise words from Seth Godin and Lauren Sapala and my best tip on what to do when you make your next blunder! s “If I can’t make it perfect, is it okay if I try to make it better?”When a project doesn’t come out precisely the way we hoped, when customer service isn’t 100%, when the reality doesn’t match the dream, then what? One option is to embrace your failure. To have your tantrum, to become bereft, to wallow in how unfair the world is. No sense messing up a perfect moment of imperfection. The other option is to put some effort into making an imperfect situation a little less imperfect. Perhaps, with some distance, it might even be a lot less imperfect, or even better than you were hoping for in the first place.Imperfect is a chance for contribution, connection and improvisation. It’s a chance to see the humanity behind the moment you were spending so much energy creating. The alternative to perfect might be better. — Seth Godin Writing is actually supposed to be fun. It is something that is supposed to nourish you, support you, help you grow and expand, and help you connect more deeply with your own heart and mind. It’s not something you need to get an A+ or 100 percent on. It’s not a test or a way for everyone else to judge you and find you unworthy. Writing is an act of love toward yourself. That’s the thing I see writers forget the most often. If you see yourself in any of this, make a short list of three things you can do today to be more accepting and more loving of yourself as a writer, and then commit to doing them. Remember, the goal isn’t to be perfect, the goal is to be you. — Lauren Sapala Of course props to Pee Wee Herman for his outstanding example of owning imperfection! And finally, I pulled 2 additional quotes from 2 awesome General Conference talks I heard over this past Easter weekend. The first is this, “The Lord does not require perfect faith for us to have access to His perfect power,” from this talk by Russel M. Nelson and the second is this, “We are all infants compared to the beings of glory and grandeur we are designed to become. No mortal being advances from crawling to walking to running without frequent stumbles, bumps, and bruises. That is how we learn,” from this talk by Dieter F. UchtdorfI’m so grateful YOU listen each week. Make sure you are subscribed so you don’t miss an episode and when you hear something that resonates, I’d love to hear from you!

Episode 4: THE POWER OF THOUGHTIt is already February and here is the 2021-02-02 episode!!! This episode is about The Power of Thought. Just how powerful do you think your thoughts are? As I started combining different information I have learnt throughout the years, I´ve become more aware that our thoughts are way more powerful than we believe. At the end, I also included an Affirmation. The two words "I AM" are considered to be the post powerful words there are, so feel free to let these affirmation help you on your way to becoming a better version of yourself. Be the Light. Share the Light. Spread the Light. Shine! Our next episode will be released on the 2021-03-03! Of course there will be plenty of Bonus episodes released in between, we are aiming for once a week, so please check back with us often as we keep adding on new episodes!BACKGROUND ABOUT THE PODCAST LDS AND MEDIUM:I was born into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, or LDS for short. I am not alone on this journey, but my sister, who just is waking up to her spiritual gifts is by my side and she will also share her story. If you like what I do, then you can find me here: https://linktr.ee/ldsandmediumIf you have words of support or stories that you anonymously want me to share please write me at ldsandmedium@gmail.com. "What is the Lord revealing to me?" That's the question at the center of our study this week. There is a long prophetic priority placed on each of us developing our ability to receive and recognize what the Lord wants us to know, feel, do, and become. In this episode we share some of those tools and how they work, practically, in our daily life. Show Notes: N. Eldon Tanner, "Warnings from Outer Space," October 1972. Thomas S. Have you seen the new Disney and Pixar movie Soul? What did you think? I thought that it was interesting that there was a pre-earth life and an afterlife. In today's episode we talk a little bit about the afterlife. Like many people, I've always been fascinated with our pre-earth life and the afterlife. It is pretty core to our belief system in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Over the holidays we watched Soul on Disney+ I won't spoil anything that you won't find on the movie's description, It's a Pixar animated film Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is a middle-school band teacher life hasn't quite gone the way he expected His true passion is jazz The movie talks about “the Great Before” which can be compared to the pre-existence, a doctrine found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But that's about it. It's not doctrinal and doesn't look much like what we know of the pre-existence. But, hey, it's kind of cool that they talk about it. The movie has a message, although a bit fuzzy, on the simple joys of life and of living. I've heard many times to stop looking forward to the destination and live in the moment. Enjoy the ride there. I think that's an underlying message of the film. I could be wrong. I'm not a movie critic. In fact I'd be a terrible movie critic. I sleep through most movies. I've seen dozens and dozens of beginnings and ends to movies. I think that you'll like it. It gets 96% rotten tomatoes rating and 8.2/10 on IMDB Beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Pre-earth life Mortal probation Spirit World Resurrection President Joseph F. Smith said, “Our fathers and mothers, brothers, sisters, and friends who have passed away from this earth, having been faithful, and worthy to enjoy these rights and privileges, may have a mission given them to visit their friends and relatives upon the earth again, bringing from the divine presence messages of love, of warning, or reproof or instruction, to those whom they have learned to love in the flesh” President Russel M Nelson shared a visit his grandfather had from his father who had passed. I wanted to share part of that experience. "'Father, is it natural to die?' "'It is just as natural to die as it is to be born, or for you to pass out of that door.' "'Father, is the gospel as taught by this Church true?' The gospel of Jesus Christ has within it the power of saving every man and woman who will obey it, and in no other way can they ever obtain salvation in the kingdom of God. My son, always cling to the gospel. Be humble, be prayerful, be submissive to the priesthood, be true, be faithful to the covenants you have made with God. Never do anything that would displease God. Oh, what a blessing is the gospel. My son, be a good boy.'" Tune in to hear the full episode. How can we restore peace this holiday season? That is the question Marcel Schwantes poses today to his guests Chester Elton and Adrian Gostick. Chester and Adrian are the authors of Leading with Gratitude (and many other best-selling management and leadership books!), and Co-Founders of The Culture Works, a global training firm that counsels the leadership of fortune 500 companies. They and Marcel talk about bringing gratitude into our homes and our workplaces. · Marcel starts the conversation by asking Chester and Adrian what they’re grateful for. Chester keeps a quotation from Russel M. Nelson near his desk: “Counting our blessings is far better than recounting our problems.” This is particularly important to remember during years like this one, when it can be harder than usual to find things to be grateful. Adrian adds that he’s grateful for the opportunity to think about things in different ways. [05:45] · When we’re in the middle of so much conflict and divisiveness, Marcel asks what needs to happen for us to be more grateful during the Christmas season. Adrian talks about the upcoming virtual or socially distanced gatherings and families who have residual political differences. The important thing according to Adrian, is “to treat people fairly.” Chester comments that we should “focus on what unites us.” [09:00] · Marcel notes that Adrian and Chester are really digging deep into empathy – and he asks what connection empathy has to gratitude. Chester notes that often when we enter into conflict we want to win, which isn’t effective. He quotes Adrian: “Take a beat. Listen more.” [13:45] · Adrian reminds everyone that “you really need to do something.” We take for granted that the people we love know how we feel about them. “Tell them specifically why you love them. That specificity is really necessary.” [19:45] · Marcel asks Adrian and Chester to get into how to actually implement a culture of gratitude. Speaking to the HR or leadership of an organization. Chester says the first thing you need to do is talk about it – identify where you are, where you want to be and how you’re going to get there, and the role that rituals can play in a company. Adrian talks about the importance of looking for small wins, which are really signposts that you’re on the right path. [25:05] · Chester mentions that one of the benefits of the pandemic is that we’re all working remotely, and leaders have developed much more empathy, since we’re all going through the same things. He talks about 3 of the questions he and Adrian encourage managers to ask their team members. [29:00] · Adrian reminds us that fairness and equity are not the same. People need to be treated differently, and managers need to know what motivates each of the people you lead. Chester says it all comes back to caring, and knowing that your boss cares about you. [32:15] · Chester says start and end your day on a positive note, and gives some strategies for how we can do that. Latter-day Saint Commentary from the Pacific Northwest - Rocky Mountain Sunshine Podcast
In this episode, I talk about some questions that arise about Latter-day Saints when it comes to Christmas. The correct name of the Church is, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are sometimes referred to as LDS or Latter-day Saints as well as Mormons. The questions that I found on Google all used the term "Mormon" which is not the correct name of members of our Church. Some things we will talk about: My beef with Starbucks. When I caught my friend Shawn holding a beer. When I accepted a bottle of wine in France. When I accidentally had alcohol on my breath and on my hands as a missionary, right before meeting with President Neil L. Andersen, our mission president. These are some popular searches that I found on Google related to my faith that we will discuss: Do Latter-day Saints Celebrate Christmas? What do you get a Latter-day Saint for Christmas? Do Latter-day Saints celebrate holidays? Do Latter-day Saints drink alcohol during the holidays? Do Latter-day Saints eat chocolate? To be clear, I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Russel M. Nelson, the President of The Church has asked us to use the correct name of the Church rather than the word "Mormon" or "Mormons". If you are of another faith, hopefully this podcast will help you to remember the correct name. Mormon is an ancient prophet who compiled the writings of many ancient prophets and put them together into The Book of Mormon. I believe it to be the word of God right along with the Bible. I revere him as a prophet, but when we call our church, "The Mormon Church", it makes it sound like we worship Mormon, instead of Jesus Christ. Those who read the Book of Mormon, know that it is simply many teachings of Jesus Christ by His prophets who lived on the American continent between 600 B.C to 400 A.D. In this episode we will discuss temporal and spiritual preparation as we relate President Nelson's remarks to our own lives.
On Good Friday, April 10th there was a worldwide day of fasting. This fast was announced by President Russel M. Nelson during April General Conference and the main purpose was to help with the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a unique experience for myself, and I'm sure for everyone else who chose to participate. I decided to document my experience as I participated in the fast.
Joy may seem like something that is fleeting, especial amidst a pandemic that is leaving fear, worry and uncertainty in its wake. Russel M. Nelson declares that we can still feel joy in our lives. Boy Scouts of America is filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy because of child sex abuse? We thank thee, O God, for our Profit, Russel M. Nelson for getting the Mormon church out of Scouts before all those lawsuits crippled BSA! While this isn’t a story directly about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these issues long predate the divorce of these two institutions. Braden and I explore the common threads and what this bankruptcy means. Then Braden tells us about some kids at a Catholic school who walked out when their gay teachers were fired for being gay! Last week we discussed the difference between happiness and joy. In review from last week, let’s look again at a what Psychology Today stated: Happiness is external. It's based on situations, events, people, places, things, and thoughts. Happiness is future-oriented and it puts all its eggs in someone else's basket. It is dependent on outside situations, people, or events to align with your expectations so that the end result is your happiness. But happiness is not joy because joy is not external, it can't be bought and it is not conditional on someone else's behavior. In fact, joy is not contingent on anything in order to exist. If you are someone who is at or near retirement age and facing a time of transition, the opportunity to experience joy can be more within reach as you can focus your time on what is most important, or more fleeting as you move from having your course charted for you, at least partially by your job or career, to seeking what’s next and how to best spend your time. Today we will be introducing The Joy Model from the book written by Jeff Spadafora, director of the halftime institute. You will find the references to this book in the show notes. As you know I am a man of faith and place my trust in Jesus Christ. This book is very faith based and the joy model is based two principals: Being - Who is God….Who am I? Doing - What should I do with my time, talent, treasure, temple, and tribe? If you are a person of faith the message of joy from this book will resonate. If you are not, there are concepts that you will be able to relate to. Everyone ponders the question of being and doing and asks themselves the questions who am I and what should I be doing, or what is my calling. We will start with how joy is defined in The Joy Model which relates very well to last weeks podcast. If you haven’t listened to episode 16 from last week, I encourage you to go back after finishing this episode. Jeff Spadafora starts by “differentiating joy from the term most often used interchangeably (and incorrectly) with joy: happiness. Happiness is circumstantial. When things are great at work, in our marriages, in our bank accounts, and with the kids, we are happy. But when our relationships get rocky, work becomes a drag, our investments tank, or the kids start misbehaving, happiness evaporates. Joy, on the other hand, continues despite circumstances. Spadafora often uses the words peace, comfort, and fulfillment interchangeably with joy. We discussed the formula E + R = O in episode 7, or how your response that you can control can have a positive impact on the outcome of any event, which you may not have any control over. Understanding this can impact your joy ultimately, and here is why. Even though Spadafora states that joy is not dependent on circumstances, he does say “you can improve your circumstances and your levels of joy by taking action on things that are within your control, such as your health, relationships, finances, career, and getting them in alignment with God’s ways, and subsequently your’ll find both your circumstances and your joy will improve. He goes on to say “It’s about obedience, about applying God’s principals to the parts of life you have control over”. If you are a person of faith and you don’t feel you are experiencing the joy that is supposed to come as a result of that faith, you may feel guilty, resulting in a negative mindset that you don’t have a strong enough relationship with and trust in Jesus to experience joy, or the being question. It could result in feeling that you aren’t reading the bible enough, aren’t sharing your faith enough, or aren’t DOING enough to experience joy from your faith. The Joy Model is based on four quadrants with a vertical axis labeled as doing (what should I do with my time, talent, treasure, temple, tribe) and the horizontal axis labeled as being (Who is God, who am I). The bottom left square is “The frustrated believer”. The bottom right is labeled “The Heartless Hypocrite”. The top left is labeled “The Weary Worker”, and the top right is labeled “The Joyful Follower”. As you may have figured out from the quadrant, moving to the top right is the goal and it requires a balance of being and doing. Without the balance, focusing on being will lead you from a frustrated believer to a heartless hypocrite, where focusing only on doing will lead you from a frustrated believer to a weary worker. Integrating your being and your doing, knowing who you are and using your strengths and talents to add value to others, the community, and world which we live will bring joy. Two verses in the Bible that speak to this topic are Galatians 5:22-23 for being and Ephesians 2:10 for doing. Galatians 5:22-23 New International Version (NIV) 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Ephesians 2:10 New International Version (NIV) 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Action Item: Think about theses questions: Where are you on the continuum of being, knowing you are and who God is? Where are you on the continuum of doing, knowing what you should do with your time, talents, and treasures. Are they balanced and is the point of convergence heading to the upper right? What one area do you need to focus on this week to get the balance you need to point toward joy? “The joy we feel has little to do with the circumstances of our lives and everything to do with the focus of our lives.” Russel M. Nelson “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Theodore Roosevelt Next week we will look at a specific plan, a MASTER plan, to help fill the gap from where you are to the joy you so desire. One of the key doctrines of the church is that God has not stopped speaking to man and that The Church has an open canon where revelation is on going. This means that God can change things through His appointed prophets to meet the needs of His saints in real time. Personally, it is how I know this church is true. I know God will not leave me alone in my day and age and will guide me and His prophets so that all I need to know to live the life God wants me to will be revealed to me. As far as the Church goes, only the prophet, Russel M. Nelson can receive revelation for the Church and he sure has received a lot lately. Joel and I discuss these changes today and Joel then shares why he believes so many changes are and will continue to happen. Enjoy!
Join in as I talk about President Russel M. Nelson's talk and what he wants for mothers and sisters in the gospel to do to further their spiritual learning.
1 Nephi 15: 1-11 Nephi had just returned from being carried away in the spirit and receiving a glorious and horrific vision. As he returned to the tent of his father, he came across his brethren disputing the things which Lehi had prophesied unto them. In this episode, we liken these scripture verses to how we may respond to our loved ones who may be questioning the gospel of Jesus Christ and his prophets. Also, we learn how we may more confidently seek answers to our prayers Also refer to President Russel M. President Russel M. Nelson, in April 2018 said that one of his concerns is that the Brothers and Sisters of the Church do not understand the Power and Authority of the Priesthood. In this episode, we take a slight departure from the scriptures and discuss the power that righteous women posses because of the covenants that they have made. That power is priesthood power. Discover how women utilize this power and how the Lord expects us to. References: Daughters in My Kingdom Chp 8, The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood by Elder Dallin H. On this episode, we take a step back and try to view the recent headlines with a little bit of historical perspective. From the current rape scandal, to general conference, to the Protect LDS Children march, we try to put historical context on everything which happened this past week. We’ll resume our historical timeline of early Mormonism next week, this week it’s just journalism surrounding the modern SLC Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
