On May 2nd, Governor Bob Ferguson signed into law a new requirement that clergy of all faiths become mandatory reporters of child abuse. It’s a move that’s especially controversial for the Catholic Church because of the sacrament of confession. Up until now, admitting to crimes during confession, in a private conversation with a priest, retained similar legal protections as attorney-client privilege. In a statement criticizing the new law, Seattle Archbishop Paul Etienne said the law violates the “seal of confession," and any priest who reports information received in confession “will be excommunicated from the Church.” Guest: Dr. Russell Powell, the Father John Topel Endowed Scholar for Catholic Thought and Justice at the Seattle University School of Law. The main goal of the Society of Saint Pius X is to preserve the Catholic Faith in its fullness and purity, to teach its truths, and to diffuse its virtues, especially through the Roman Catholic priesthood. Authentic spiritual life, the sacraments, and the traditional liturgy are its primary means of bringing this life of grace to souls. Although the traditional Latin Mass is the most visible and public expression of the work of the Society, we are committed to defending Catholic Tradition in its entirety: all of Catholic doctrine and morals as the Church has always defended them.

"If you were to ask me to translate an ancient document and to organize the people and a whole religion -- I would never want that kind of authority thrust on me. I know I would misuse it, I absolutely would. So this process has really brought me to this place of grace for those who have come before in the gospel. And also, these things that I get so frustrated about or that I don't understand, they're not mine to understand right now and it's okay because it's temporary. The reality is that Christ is our savior and the gospel is real. And when we turn to Him, the peace that is there, and the love, and the understanding surpasses everything else. There is no substitute." https://www.eventbrite.com/e/come-back-to-christ-tickets-1120310471779?aff=oddtdtcreator&ref=comebackpodcast.org https://mikesautoshack.com/ Come Back Team: Director, Founder & Host: Ashly Stone Producer and Senior Editor: Lauren Rose Outreach Manager: Jenna Carlson Editor: Cara Reed Assistant Editor: Michelle Berger Art Director: Jeremy Garcia Episode sponsor: Serve Clothing https://serveclothing.com/?gad_source=1

Be Happy and Drink Well. Commandaria stands proudly as a testament to the viticultural excellence of Cyprus. In fact, Commandaria holds the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously produced wines in the world. Though produced for centuries, the roots of Commandaria can be traced back to the Crusades in the 12th century. It even won first place in a semi-legendary wine-tasting contest held in thirteenth century France.* It was under the rule of the Knights Templar and the Knights of St. John that the wine garnered its name. For this episode, I invite Dr. Antonis Constantinou, who served as Director of Cypriot Department of Agriculture and has published several authoritative books and articles to discuss the history of Commandaria! **CHECK OUT PATREON FOR AN IMAGINING OF THE BATTLE OF THE WINES!** The Battle of the Wines (La Bataille des Vins in French) is a poem written by Henry d'Andeli in 1224. It describes a supposed historic wine-tasting event organized by King Philip Augustus of France. Over 70 wines from various regions, including France, Spain and Cyprus were sampled and judged by an English priest. The wines were divided into two categories: "Celebrated" for those he approved and "Excommunicated" for those that did not meet his expectations. In the end, a sweet wine from Cyprus, thought to be Commandaria, was named the winner and given the esteemed title of "Apostle." You can find Dr. Antonis Constantinou's book, "The Legend of Commandaria," on AMAZON!
We speak with theologian and philosopher Thomas Jay Oord about his church trial and his book Open and Relational Theology. Thomas, who was a minister for many years in the Church of the Nazarene, faced a trial for being inclusive on matters of LGBTQ+ and church participation and blessing. Thomas outlines a theological view that is about love more than it is about traditional concepts of power. This means that he calls for better understanding of what it means that God is all powerful or all knowing. The story of Thomas' trial and excommunication can sound almost medieval, but it reminds us that the struggle over proper belief is very much alive today. Individuals and churches are being excommunicated or disaffiliated. Some people are choosing themselves to part company with a church or denomination based on rigid belief or what they see as damaging theology. Thomas is a regular contributor to podcasts such as Tripp Fuller's Homebrewed Christianity and continues to write and to direct the Center for Open and Relational Theology. Speaking out against the Brethren isn't just a story; it's a call to action. The courage it takes to voice one's truth against the odds is powerful. Craig Hoyle chooses honesty over silence, pushing for a change. Our final episode in this 3 part series takes us from chapter 13 to the end of the book revealing Craig's life after leaving the PBCC/ Exclusive Brethren. In this episode, we cover RRT, animal cruelty, car chases, sexual abuse of those that came before us, Faith in Practice document, gaining new family on the outside, and so much more. This tear jerking episode also highlights what our younger siblings may have gone through as we left. From fending off surveillance to chasing justice, the journey of ex-members is daunting yet empowering. Exposing the Brethren's control tactics is no small feat. But as Craig points out, staying silent fosters the persistence of injustices. Our time is now to use our voices and have these changes made! In this special episode, I sit down with Craig Hoyle, an LGBT+ author, journalist, and religious refugee from Auckland, who will be speaking at the Decult Cult Awareness Conference in Christchurch. Craig's powerful personal story, as told in his book Excommunicated: A Multigenerational Story of Leaving the Exclusive Brethren, sheds light on the traumatic consequences of ex-communication and the multigenerational impact of leaving a high-control religious group like the Exclusive Brethren New Zealand. After coming out as gay, Craig was excommunicated from the church, forced to say goodbye to his family forever, and thrust into a world he had never experienced. His book not only tells his coming out story, but also uncovers his family's deeply rooted history with the Exclusive Brethren, spanning over two centuries. We discuss what it was like leaving the Exclusive Brethren and how the emotional toll of ex-communication fueled his advocacy for human rights and religion, with a focus on religion, human rights, and social justice.Craig will be one of the featured speakers at the Decult Cult Awareness Conference, a vital cult conference addressing the hidden world of cults and coercive control. His talk will dive deep into the intersection of cult trauma recovery and human rights, sharing insights on what it means to be an ex-Exclusive Brethren member and a religious refugee, while also advocating for LGBT+ rights. His work exemplifies how journalists can play a key role in supporting human rights, and in this conversation, Craig shares his experiences with Journalists for Human Rights and the importance of covering stories about cult survivors. As part of this Christchurch event, we also explore Craig's broader mission to raise awareness about cult dynamics, the importance of addressing cult awareness issues globally, and the fight for the rights of those impacted by religious and social oppression.Don't miss the chance to join this important discussion at the Decult Cult Awareness Conference!Get your live stream tickets for October 19th & 20th here:https://events.humanitix.com/decult-cult-awareness-conference-ticketsDon't miss this opportunity to hear Craig Hoyle's presentation and participate in meaningful conversations on cult trauma recovery, religious justice, and the global fight against coercive control.#DecultCultAwarenessConference #CraigHoyle #ExCommunicated #ExclusiveBrethren #ExExclusiveBrethren #CultAwareness #Excommunication #CultTraumaRecovery #CultConference #WitnessUnderground #MyComingOutStory2024 #LGBTWriter #HumanRightsAndReligion #ReligionHumanRightsAndSocialJustice #ChristchurchEvent #JournalistsForHumanRightsSupport the showSubscribe to the newsletter for weekly episodes: https://bit.ly/WitnessUndergroundWatch now:http://WitnessUnderground.comhttps://tubitv.com/movies/100018684/witness-undergroundhttps://vimeo.com/ondemand/witnessundergroundSupport:https://Patreon.com/WitnessUndergroundhttps://YouTube.com/@WitnessUndergroundReach out directly: XJWdoc@gmail.com-Scott
Part 2 starts off with an update from an insider on what was said in their church meetings regarding the breaking up of families. Lindy responds with a thorough theological breakdown on the misuse of scripture in high demand religious groups. Craig continues to narrate important highlights from his book, Excommunicated, as we dive into his journey getting ready to leave, in chapters 8-12. Craig takes us on his journey into living in Sydney and the PBCC's leader Bruce Hales' solution to fix Craig being gay. We discuss the never ending subject of the misuse of alcohol in the brethren and the infamous May '05 letter where Bruce Hales asserted authority and saw who was all in alignment with him. We reveal that this May '05 letter was a monumental move by Bruce, etched in everyone's mind just like Aberdeen. (Link below of letter) Craig threads together more of his ancestry with letters and we also discuss the past excommunication of the Hales' family. Below you will find a transcript of that meeting in 1965. Stay tuned for Part 3 where we discuss life after leaving and how that looked for Craig and his family. This is a wild story!
Today's Topics: 1) Gospel - Lk 1:26-38 - The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, “Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you.” But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his Kingdom there will be no end.” But Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?” And the angel said to her in reply, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.” Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.” Then the angel departed from her. Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord O Jesus, have mercy upon us! O Blessed Mother, pray for us! Bishop Sheen quote of the day Father Charles Murr joins Terry to discuss the meaning and appropriateness of excommunication as a corrective measure, why Bishops are silent on moral evils (hint: Follow the money)
