Tales from the Field: Stories Missionaries Don't Tell Their Parents

Your courage/vulnerability helps others that they too are loved by God and needed in our church community. Thanks for helping us build Zion. You are a good man. My friend Richard Hanks (mid 60s, retired business executive, active Latter-day Saint/former Mission President) joins us to talk about his biography of his father Elder Marion D. Hanks (beloved general authority—called at age 31—who lived from 1921-2011) in his book called “To Be a Friend of Christ: The Life of Marion D. Hanks.” Richard talks about his father's unique approach to the gospel and his work—focused on following Christ—advocating for: increasing the church's humanitarian efforts, Christian service by full-time missionaries, acceptance of those on the fringes, the creation of singles wards, combining High Priests and Elders quorums, adapting garments to local climates, civil marriage before sealings, a kinder and more merciful approach to repentance, and a strong/vocal desire to end the priesthood ban—all while being deeply committed to the Church and supportive of its leaders. Richard talks about key areas of his father's ministry including “aggressive Christianity versus aggressive proselytizing”; “souls versus statistics ”; and “this is the only true church/others are wrong" versus "The more excellent way.” He further talks about his father's work to focus the mission of the Church on Christ, bring the Christus to Temple Square, teaching faith over dogma and certitudes, and principles to help those with legitimate concerns stay in the Church. I was always aware of and grateful for the ministry of Elder Hanks, but it wasn't until becoming familiar with Richard's book about his father, that I realized how unique, progressive, and needed was his ministry in the Church, all he accomplished, and the many lives he blessed being laser focused on helping people "Come unto Christ." If you are looking for hope for the future of the Church and how your contributions are needed, I encourage you to read Richard's book. Thank you, Richard, for making this book possible, and for your work to create Zion. Links: Richard's book at Amazon: www.amazon.com/dp/1560854723 Contacting Richard: RichDHanks@gmail.com
Hey there, mission friends! In episode 187 - When Missionaries in Your District Are Struggling, we're diving into how to support missionaries (or anyone on your team) who are struggling. As a mission coach, I know how challenging it can be to see the people you care about going through a tough time. But I've got five key strategies to help you show up as an effective leader and guide them through. First, it's so important to normalize their feelings. When someone is feeling down or discouraged, our natural tendency is to try and "fix" it. But that can actually make them feel worse. Instead, validate what they're going through by saying things like "It makes total sense that you're feeling this way." Next, avoid mirroring their emotions - if they're sad, don't get sad too. Stay grounded so you can think clearly about how to support them. And don't make assumptions about what they need. Ask questions to really understand their perspective. Finally, help them refocus on the bigger purpose. Remind them of why you're all on this journey together, and how the ups and downs are all part of the process. These strategies will empower you to lead with compassion and wisdom, even in the midst of struggle. Your people need you to show up as your best self, and these tools will help you do just that. Let me know if you have any other questions - I'm always here to support you on your mission! As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. In this powerful episode, I sit down with Braylen Bleak to discuss her experience of being sent home from her mission due to disobedience. This is a topic that is often not openly discussed, but Braylon's vulnerability and honesty provide invaluable insights. Braylen shares her initial expectations of being the "perfect missionary" and the struggles she faced with perfectionism early on. She then courageously recounts the difficult decision to confess her mistakes to her mission president, the emotional pain of the repentance process, and the incredible support she received from her parents. Through it all, Braylen's faith in the Atonement and her determination to remain strong in the gospel shine through. Braylen's story is a testament to the healing power of the Savior and the importance of facing our challenges head-on. Her advice to others in similar situations - to trust in the Lord's plan and have the courage to walk the difficult path of repentance - is both inspiring and hopeful. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking to better understand the complexities of the mission experience. Braylen Bleak is from Laramie, Wyoming and a recently returned missionary. She is in school studying special education and elementary education, and runs her own photography business. The lyrics she shares on this episode are from the song Flowers - by Samantha Ebert As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I wanted to speak to Daryl about how he reflects on the experience of leading the mission and the logistics and practicalities of what it's actually like to serve in that calling. Some highlights from this episode include how missionary work has changed after Covid, what the first day of leading the mission is like, and the emotional toll of bidding farewell to beloved missionaries and welcoming in new ones every 6 weeks.--Follow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith. For All The Saints podcast was established in 2023 by Ben Hancock to express his passion and desire for more dialogue around faith, religious belief, and believers' perspectives on the topics of our day. In episode175, I dive deeper into the topics of anxiety and fear. As we approach the Halloween season, I reflect on how fear and anxiety are not inherently bad emotions - in fact, we often seek them out through spooky movies, haunted houses, and other thrilling experiences. However, I acknowledge that unprocessed anxiety can escalate into more debilitating emotions like panic and terror. I share a message I received from a concerned parent, whose son is struggling with anxiety but is hesitant to open up to his church leaders about it, fearing they may see it as disqualifying him from serving a mission. I emphasize that anxiety is a normal human emotion, not an illness, and that we need to do a better job of normalizing these feelings, especially for youth and young adults. Leaders and loved ones should create safe spaces for people to be honest about their fears and anxieties, offering support instead of judgment. Ultimately, I encourage listeners to look to Christ, who can provide the courage to face our doubts and fears, even if He doesn't immediately take them away. By relying on the Savior's plan and Atonement, we can navigate our very human emotions with more self-compassion and resilience. As the first to be “born in the covenant” to convert parents, Rian Anderson's world revolved around the Church, until her mission became a crucible of mental anguish and familial tension. Expecting her experience to be one based on love and service, Rian was instead met with strict rules, surveillance, and spiritual turmoil as she continually felt forced to act against her own conscience & integrity. As the oppressive atmosphere coupled with isolation due to the initial rise of COVID began to take its toll on her mental and physical health, Rian cherished her weekly calls with her family. That is, until her family's mounting concern for Rian's welfare coincided with their loss of faith in the church. As Rian battled depression and suicidal thoughts, her mission leaders' response was shocking: accusations of pride and instructions to cut ties with her doubting family. Certain that their concern for Rian's spiritual well-being was superior to the love her “fallen” family had to offer back home, her Mission President and his wife insert themselves as surrogate parents for the remainder of her mission and beyond. Despite this initial interference, Rian finds herself facing her own faith crisis. As she considers what the actions of her “mission parents” truly cost her, Rian discovers for herself the real meaning of family, and her family had it all along.

Hey everyone, Jennie here with episode 151 of the LDS Mission Podcast. This week I wanted to talk about something very personal - being a mom of adult children. As many of you know, I have 5 kids ranging from young adults to teenagers. It's been such a journey watching them grow up, and there are so many lessons I've learned along the way. In this episode, I share some of my best tips for letting go of expectations and trusting the plan as your kids become independent. I also discuss the importance of validating yourself rather than relying on your kids for that. I give you all of my tips for navigating the journey of having adult children. My friend Lily Prisbrey—who recently returned from both a proselyting mission (Philippines) and a service mission (Utah). She joins us to give her farewell talk. In this talk, Lily bravely talks about: Her journey with scrupulosity and faith-related guilt. Finding a loving, accepting, and NOT “ever-disappointed” God. Finding God in the Filipino people. Finding God through a Mission President who listened to doubts without judging and supported Lily's decision to end her proselyting mission early. Finding God through failure. Inviting others to serve missions who don't fit the mold. Lily concludes her talk with her powerful testimony of a loving God with 1 John 4: “God is love” and these words: “I am not a black and white, fit the mold, perfect kind of person. But I served as a missionary—and I hope that through what I've shared today—you all can see that if I can be a missionary, you can too”. We conclude with a discussion about her talk. Lily brings powerful insights into how to help everyone feel loved, accepted, and that there is room them. Lily is so brave and vulnerable—a sign of strength and discipleship that pattens how to help others feel welcome, safe, and needed. Thank you for being on the podcast Lily. I was so moved by your homecoming talk. Honored to provide a platform where more can hear your inspiring message. In this episode, we explore the concept of the three versions of ourselves - past, present, and future. The inspiration for today's episode came from watching the movie "Spirited" after Thanksgiving. This movie has a modern take on Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol. The movie follows a similar storyline, where Ryan Reynold's character is visited by ghosts who try to redeem and change their ways. To honor and appreciate our past selves. Be grateful for your past selves and acknowledge that you wouldn't be who you are without them. We then move onto our present selves and future selves. Overall, this episode explores the importance of honoring and appreciating each version of ourselves - past, present, and future - and I want encourage listeners to practice gratitude for their past selves and find joy in the present and hope for the future. Glen talks about the joy that comes from turning to the Savior when your life gets off track and trusting your priesthood leaders to help you find peace in the repentance process. He shares 3 important words he hopes every returned missionary will remember: "Stand with Joseph". In this episode, we explore why we should stop chasing happiness. I received an email from a missionary mom, who expressed concern about her son. Her son believed happiness was always in the future, even when he could potentially be feeling it in the present. This prompted me to dive deeper into the concept of happiness. What it actually is? How to obtain it? and What prevents us from recognizing when we are happy? We discuss idea that we as humans don't want to just be half happy or half frustrated. We want to experience a full range of emotions. Our desire for happiness stems from our innate need to feel all emotions. And happiness is not something that can be chased or obtained externally. Instead, happiness is an emotion that is created within our bodies and can only be experienced in the present moment. Happiness is an emotion felt in the body. It can be experienced by getting out of our heads and into our bodies. Through this process, one can discover the physical sensations associated with happiness, such as warmth or a specific color. Happiness cannot be given or received from others, as it is an individual experience. In this episode we also touch on the obstacles that prevent us from accessing or noticing happiness. These include viewing happiness as a destination or future event. Chasing happiness through external circumstances, and not allowing ourselves to be happy when others are not. The importance of learning how to love oneself and others even when happiness is not present. Overall, we aim to shift the perspective on happiness and to stop chasing it as an external goal. Today I interviewed Jonathan Brinley, an instructor of Ancient Scripture at Brigham Young University and my New Testament teacher! Brinley explains that his testimony was shaped by religious speakers and educators that he crossed paths with because of his father's occupation as a religious educator. He describes how he would feel the spirit and a yearning to come closer to Christ through their words. Jonathan's testimony was further strengthened when he moved to Dallas Texas because of his father's calling as a Mission President. Jonathan's testimony was challenged when he encountered other faiths, but he remained faithful to the eternal truths he had grown up with. Brinley shares his experience serving a mission, finding an eternal companion, and sharing general advice about the spirit and testimonies. I hope you enjoy this episode!!

This is a rebroadcast. The episode originally ran in November 2019. Robert Millet, Ph.D., is an author, speaker, and professor of Ancient Scripture and emeritus dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University. Author of more than 75 published works, he has been involved in BYU Education Week for many years and is well-known as a commentator on the BYUTV Scripture Discussions program. He is also manager of Outreach and Interfaith Relations for the Church's Public Affairs department. Brother Millet chose to write his book The Holy Spirit: His Identity, Mission, and Ministry because the Spirit is so frequently referred to and discussed, but we might not appreciate all that it is. Highlights 03:00 Strategy for covering topics: he makes a list and works on it daily, narrowing it down over a period of weeks/months to develop the book. Work on prophetic statements that relate and continue narrowing the information. Also asking “what experiences have I had with this”. He wanted to cover the topics of sons of perdition, the light of Christ, and God's power. 13:00 How, as leaders, can we have a better understanding of the Holy Spirit: having it, losing it, etc. 13:47 What does it mean to “lose the Holy Ghost”? We lose feeling, we withdraw ourselves. You can't take a vacation from the Spirit – you can't sit still; you either fall back or move forward 19:45 The Holy Ghost “strives with us”. It “battles with us”. There will always be an element of the Spirit to help you; you can't “lose it”. All people can have the Spirit. They may not have the gift of the Holy Ghost that comes from baptism, but they certainly can have the Spirit and inspiration. 25:40 How do you know when a sin is forgiven? Study Mosiah 4:1-3 (joy, peace of conscience, larger measure of the Spirit). “Just don't do things that are offending to the Spirit.” 28:40 Where is “grace” in the doctrine? The Holy Ghost is an act of God's grace to us. We can put ourselves in a position to receive that gift by our actions. “The sun doesn't stop shining just because I put a bag over my head, it continues to shine”. It is the same with God; He loves us through everything. 32:30 Justification and Sanctification 44:10 Be cautious about “I feel impressed that…” It is good to teach what you feel, but if you announce that it came from the Spirit, it can come across as boastful. 45:35 How about church callings and the Spirit? If you pray to start a meeting and pray for the Spirit to guide decisions, you don't need to kneel individually about all decisions. As we strive to live our lives to keep the Spirit with us, we will see that the Holy Ghost has been guiding us in all decisions and shaped our lives. Those decisions were inspired, and hopefully good judgement. We don't need to pray over every decision. “The Spirit prepares us today for decisions we have to make in the future.” 53:00 Joseph McConkie story about calling Stake Presidents: The Lord fits us to our assignments. “God honors the servant”. Difference of being called “by God” or “of God”. 55:00 Final story related again to his friend Joseph McConkie, prior to him leaving to Scotland as a Mission President. Asked him if he had read everything and felt prepared. “What do you think?” He said, “What could cause us not to worry about 63 rules? I will teach my missionaries this: never do anything that would cost you the influence of the Holy Spirit.” That is a great standard to live by. Callings in the Church are not to be superheroes but to live in the way to be directed by the Holy Spirit. It is a solemn responsibility. Mosiah 26: Alma “feared that he would not do right”. As leaders we need to strive to do that. My friend Clark Barrow (RM, Active LDS, Age 24, Married) bravely shares his journey with self-harm. Clark (who was on episode 398 with his siblings supporting their gay father Alec) talks about returning home from his mission to Utica, New York after 9 months with a knee injury. Clark talks about the anxiety of being home and how that experience led to significant anxiety and stress about when/if to return to his mission. That led Clark to finding a coping mechanism to numb the pain in self-harm. Clark talks about the shame and stigma around self-harm. Clark returned to Utica, New York and served for another 9 months before the stress/anxiety of the mission led Clark to turn to his copying mechanism of self-harm. Clark, showing great courage, opened up to his companion and Mission President which resulting in Clark returning home. Clark talks about being an early release missionary (twice) and what we can do to better support these good missionaries. Clark also talks about what led him to finally open up and get help with self-harm and begin his recovery. Clark is sharing his story to reduce the shame and stigma around self-harm to help others. Clark's wife Tegan shares her thoughts about self-harm and how they love and support each other—and the importance of being open and honest during the dating process (which should continue throughout marriage). Go Ye Forth - Sharing Latter-day Saint Mission Experiences from Around the Globe
Follow our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/goyeforthpodcast/ Hello everyone! On today's show, we have a special guest, someone who is dear to me and has played an important role in my life, Richard Oveson who was my mission president for the second half of my mission. Richard served in France from 1949 to 1952 and also served as mission president in the Bordeaux France mission. President and Sister Oveson were there from 1992-1995. And in my missionary minute, I talk about opening up the scriptures. So let's get to it! ... A special thanks to President Richard Oveson. It was so great to speak with him and hear about some of his experiences as a missionary. President Oveson was a great example to me on my mission and continues to be a great example to me. I bore my testimony this past fast Sunday and spoke about some of the people in my life who I have looked up to and who have helped me become a better person. President Oveson was one of those people. I think it's important to have people to look up to and try and be more like them and do what they do. He has hed the type of life that I think we missionaries tried to follow and pattern our lives to be a little more like his. In today's missionary minute, I was reminded of a special experience that I had as a missionary. I was a zone leader and we would go to the mission home in Bordeaux for a zone leaders conference every month. I remember sitting in a large room in President Oveson's home, and he had the Book of Mormon open, and he was reading from the scriptures. He would stop after a verse or two and teach and testify, and the Spirit bore witness to me that what he was teaching was true. The scriptures were opened up to my spiritual eyes, not just my physical eyes and ears. It was a powerful moment and one I will never forget. In 2004, $700,000 in debt and determined to avoid bankruptcy, the Thompsons decided to “swing for the fences” to get out of debt and bring value to the world. While juggling church assignments, a growing family of five children and a heavily indebted business, they found Scentsy—a company famous for creating flameless candles. The perfect balance of rudder and sail, Heidi and Orville partner in leading Scentsy with the same passion, dedication and commitment they strive to give the Lord and their family. In July 2021, the Thompsons will stepped down from their business at Scentsy to serve for three years as the Mission President and Companion for the England London Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Gene R. Chidester served a mission in Argentina and has since served as a bishop, branch president, high councilor, stake president's counselor, mission president in Uruguay, and Area Seventy. He is a BYU fan, husband, father, grandfather, the owner of Evince Naturals, and producer for the Latter-day Lives podcast. Gene and his wife Robyn live in North Salt Lake, Utah. In this podcast, Kurt and Gene discuss what leadership is and the key leadership processes Gene has used in his church service. Highlights 9:45 Gene defines leadership as a process of exerting social influence over others. This process can be learned, studied, observed, and trained. That is why anyone can be a leader. 10:40 Attributes of a leader. D&C 121:41-42. 11:50 Key leadership process one - A leader needs to create a vision, mentally and verbally, for their followers. What is your vision for your organization or ward? How can you convey that vision to others? 13:50 Key leadership process two - Create a shared plan that can help you get to your outcome. It's not just the leader's plan. Everyone in the organization should contribute to the plan. 15:00 Delegation. The leader has the responsibility for setting clear expectations. Such as: who will carry out the plan, time frame, provide appropriate resources, and follow up consistently. 16:00 Key leadership process three - Develop appropriate measures and metrics. Measures to track performance and progress. 17:30 Example of how to carry out a plan. 20:20 Key leadership process number four - When appropriate, celebrate successes. 22:00 Leadership gives power and influence. It can lead to either unrighteous dominion or righteous dominion. D&C 121:39. 27:00 In leadership meetings, set aside calendaring and administration. Come prepared to talk about specific individuals and their needs. Who needs ordinances done? 32:15 Communication councils play a vital role in connecting stakes to other faiths. 37:15 Gene's approach to zone conferences when he was a Mission President. 45:00 Gene's advice to prepare leaders for a visiting seventy. A seventy is not there to judge the meeting but to help the stake or ward. 47:00 Gene talks about his experience giving out callings. It's not about who has the best church resume or who is the best prepared. Let God inspire you because it's His calling, not yours.
