Freedom of expression on college campuses has been under assault across America for years, and at Cornell University the problem was particularly bad, so a group of alumni decided they'd had enough. Through hard work and dedication, they persuaded the President to launch a university-wide free expression initiative. Cornell Alum Paul Rossi and Cornell Professor Randy Wayne join me to discuss how the University's freedom of expression initiative is working as we approach the one year anniversary of its implementation. Paul Rossi is an active high school math teacher and the co-founder and CEO of Terra Firma Teaching Alliance, a peer support and placement network of traditional K-12 teachers. He is a biophysical plant cell biologist, in the Laboratory of Natural Philosophy, who researches the nature of light. He teaches Plant Cell Biology, Light and Video Microscopy, and a nonmajors course called Light and Life. He is the author of Plant Cell Biology: From Astronomy to Zoology and Light and Video Microscopy. He is co-chair of the Heterodox Academy Campus Community at Cornell University, which brings heterodox thinkers to campus. We've all heard the stories of an actor who caught their big break walking the dog town the street and catching the eye of a big shot casting director. Or happened to be the kid of a prominent mom or dad. Or booked a major role on their first audition because of plain old fashion good luck and being in the right place at the right time. My guest today is NOT one of those actors. He achieved his success through a tireless work ethic and sheer talent. Our guest today is Randy Wayne. Randy is the kind of person working in show business that makes it looks easy. It isn't, but he makes it look that way. As an actor and producer who has worked predominantly in the horror genre, Randy has played everything from heroes to villains, leading man to supporting. He's always 100% committed and his versatility has served him well. You've seen him in studio horror, indie horror and television horror where he had a recurring role on HBO's hit “True Blood”. Randy discusses his beginnings as an athlete who stumbled into acting quite by accident and quickly discovered it was his calling, the joys of location shooting, working with genre veterans like Dee Wallace and Lance Henriksen and preparing for playing a serial killer who loves to drown his victims in “Death Pool”. Looking through Randy's credits, it's clear to see he loves what he does because he keeps a tireless pace. He's always shooting. Either in front or behind the camera. On top of this, he's a caring husband and father.  We don't really know how he does it but this conversation got us a little closer to figuring it out. We're all very familiar with the term “Scream Queen”. Mike Mendez  @madmanmendezA native to Los Angeles, Mike Mendez was in the backyard making movies since the age of 10. At the age of 23, Mike made his first feature film "Killers," which was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. He followed that up with the horror comedy "The Convent," which was also accepted into the Sundance Film Festival in 2000. The film was released by Lionsgate in the U.S. In 2002, he produced a documentary for Universal Television and Showtime entitled "Masters of Horror," featuring interviews with some of the genre's most legendary filmmakers.  In 2006, Mike's film "The Gravedancers" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released in theaters nationally by Lionsgate & After Dark Films as part of "8 Films To Die For”. After working on short films for X-box and working on television show's such as "Beavis & Butthead",  Mike's next film, "Big Ass Spider!" in 2013 would go on to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. It also won the Saturn Award that year for best limited release film. The latest batch of work includes the horror anthology, “Tales of Halloween” of which he served as a producer and one of the directors. Mike also helmed the 2015 television movie, “Lavalantula” for the Syfy channel And “Don't Kill It" starring Dolph Lundgren, which premiered at Fantastic Fest. Mike Mendez  @madmanmendezA native to Los Angeles, Mike Mendez was in the backyard making movies since the age of 10. At the age of 23, Mike made his first feature film "Killers," which was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival. He followed that up with the horror comedy "The Convent," which was also accepted into the Sundance Film Festival in 2000. The film was released by Lionsgate in the U.S. In 2002, he produced a documentary for Universal Television and Showtime entitled "Masters of Horror," featuring interviews with some of the genre's most legendary filmmakers.  In 2006, Mike's film "The Gravedancers" premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released in theaters nationally by Lionsgate & After Dark Films as part of "8 Films To Die For”. After working on short films for X-box and working on television show's such as "Beavis & Butthead",  Mike's next film, "Big Ass Spider!" in 2013 would go on to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival. It also won the Saturn Award that year for best limited release film. The latest batch of work includes the horror anthology, “Tales of Halloween” of which he served as a producer and one of the directors.
