Opportunity in America - Events by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program
Finding great employees for any organization can be challenging, and keeping them on board presents its own challenges. In response, many creative leaders are adopting strategies that expand talent pipelines to reach a wider variety of candidates based on skills and competencies. Others are exploring ways to build organizations that support internal growth and leadership with a clearer focus on skills and competencies, as well. How can leaders across the workforce ecosystem lead organizational change and partnerships to open opportunities in sectors as diverse as affordable housing and advanced manufacturing? This event — hosted by the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program on April 16, 2026 — features a conversation with leaders from our Workforce Leadership Academies who are driving changes in industry practices and organizational culture. Their work has not only created more opportunities to get workers to the door, but also supported employees once they're through the door — for both frontline and leadership roles. Our speakers include Leah Palmer, executive director of the Maricopa County Community College District's Arizona Advanced Manufacturing Institute, Tiffany Mangum, executive director of Fresno Housing's Beyond Housing Foundation, who will share their lessons in leading these changes, and Dee Wallace, senior fellow with the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program. For more information about this event, including a transcript, speaker bios, and additional resources, visit our website. The narrative around alien abductions is changing, and Dee Wallace is at the forefront of this shift. In this episode, she explains why we should stop using fear-based language and start referring to people as "contactees" or "experiencers." Dee discusses the soul contracts we make before incarnating and how alien encounters are often predestined meetings. We explore missing time, telepathic communication, and light language. Dee's perspective is one of empowerment rather than victimhood. She provides tools for experiencers to integrate their otherworldly events into their daily lives. Originally Recorded on Monday December 1st and Wednesday December 3rd, 2025 Seasons Greetings, fans! Timothy Kazda and Chris Koenig of That Horror Show Podcast bring you another new episode to tickle your eardrums with delight. Christmas season is upon us, but the show hosts have reviewed two movies that are anything but "Christmas related". If any, the theme of this episode involves animals-on-the-loose! The first movie on the docket is none other than "Cujo" (1983), the cinematic adaptation of the Stephen King novel which presents this concept: take the classic Disney film "Old Yeller" and infuse it with a bite from a rabid bat, all the while 'Who Let the Dogs Out' (yes, we know: the one-hit wonder song is from 2000, but the description fits, damn it!) plays in the background as people are mauled to death by a murderous canine thirsty for human blood...and, if that isn't enough, Dee Wallace has to contend with her panicky son in a beat up Ford Pinto. Yes, fun for the whole family! After that, the hosts tackle none other than "Cocaine Bear" (2023), a "true story" yarn that's more "inspired" than "based", as a black bear ingests duffel bags full of pure uncut coke and then goes on a tear against the following: irate drug dealers, a clueless forest ranger of the female variety, teen toughs (ha!), dopey kids, a grizzled cop who emits "I'm gettin' too old for this shit" vibes, European backpackers that should know better (but don't!), uncaring ambulance personnel, and a mother nurse, all taking place in the year of 1985! And yes, Nate from 'Kids Corner' is onhand to give his personal review for none other than "Friday the 13th: Part 2" (1981). It's a stacked episode, folks, so you know the drill...but if you don't, it's never too late to learn, so click that 'play now' icon and give this episode a spin.

Horror movies, holiday slashers, and classic monster mayhem collide in this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering December 8–14 in spooky cinema. We dig into the releases, icons, and deep cuts that shaped horror long before Christmas morning ever arrived. This week's watch list includes:Christine (1983) – John Carpenter's sleek, icy adaptation of Stephen King's killer-car novel. We look at how this haunted Plymouth went from a modest box office performer to a cult favorite thanks to its mood, music, and vicious metal-on-flesh set pieces. The Wolfman (1941) – Lon Chaney Jr.'s tragic Larry Talbot helped define the sympathetic monster and rewrote the rules for werewolf lore. We talk legacy, atmosphere, and why this frosty Universal chiller still plays perfectly on a cold December night.Scream 2 (1997) – Meta slashers head to college as Sidney Prescott and Ghostface return in a sequel that should've fizzled but absolutely works. Film theory, sequel rules, and late-'90s horror energy all collide in one of the most successful slasher follow-ups ever.Maniac Cop 2 (1990) – An undead cop, wild stunts, and a grimy New York that feels like a haunted maze. We spotlight why this over-the-top sequel is a cult gem for fans of action-horror hybrids. We also roll through a birthday crawl for some horror legends: Rick Baker, Vampira, Bill Nighy, and Dee Wallace, celebrating how their work reshaped monsters, ghosts, and genre weirdos across decades. In our “Then and Now: Meta Slashers” segment, we use Scream 2 as a jumping-off point to talk about how self-aware horror evolved—from '90s snark to today's nostalgia-driven, legacy-sequel era. And for your weekly recommendation, we head back to the 1950s with Tarantula (1955), a giant-spider creature feature that channels Cold War anxieties into big, creepy fun and pairs beautifully with other atomic-age monster flicks. All that plus our sponsor Cozy Earth— 41% off with Promo Code SPOOKY ultra-comfy bedding perfect for staying warm while you binge horror history marathons in December. If you love horror podcasts, classic monster movies, '80s Stephen King adaptations, and meta slasher sequels, this week's trip through the dates will fill your holiday season watchlist and keep your nights eerie all December long.
Dee Wallace returns for an interview that goes deep into acting, her book, her daughter and much more.

James Lloyd and Steve Smith from The Alcohol-Free Revolution podcast join Flixwatcher to review James' choice E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. E.T (1982) is a sci-fi adventure film directed by Steven Spielberg. It stars Henry Thomas as Elliot, a boy who befriends E.T, who had accidentally been left on earth during a visit with his family. It also stars Dee Wallace as Henry's mum Mary, Robert MacNaughton as Michael, Henry's brother and in her debut role, Drew Barrymore as Gertie, the boys younger sister. When ET, a small brown alien with big blue eyes, is left behind, Elliot finds him and takes him in. As they begin to bond they start sharing thoughts and emotions. Elliot with his brother Michael and sister Gertie's help manage to hide ET from their mother and help ET make a device to phone home. Get yourself a costume and slap on your face - we're off to the cinema for 1991's “Popcorn”. A film in which we learn that reggae bands cannot be stopped by a power cut; your favourite Martian now owns a movie memorabilia shop; and, as always, if Dee Wallace is your mum, shit's gonna get weird. Made at that curious cusp of 2 decades, this should be standard 80s slasher fare, but it's knowing references to horror film lore and elevated tone actually predict the direction the genre would take through the 90s. A fractious production with director and lead actor swapped out a few weeks into shooting, this could have been a real mess - the fact it's as entertaining and coherent as it is is a testament to all involved. With a likeable cast exhibiting genuine camaraderie and some fine spoofing in the films within the film, this is a neglected little treat for the curious. Send us a textRemember Critters? The "Not A Gremlins Rip-off" but the best "Gremlins Rip-off". Who wouldn't love a bunch of alien goffers that roll around, shoot darts out of their heads, and eat everything in sight? And from what we remember, the Crites were real dicks. But we haven't seen this movie in a very long time. It has a great cast and cool trailer, so we have our fingers crossed. Join us as we go back to 1986 and watch Critters.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
We are kicking off HAHAugust 2: Double Take with 1982's "a guy in a dress is always funny" comedy, JIMMY THE KID starring Gary Coleman (ON THE RIGHT TRACK, DIFF'RENT STROKES), Paul Le Mat (AMERICAN GRAFFITI, PUPPET MASTER), Cleavon Little (BLAZING SADDLES, FLETCH LIVES) and Dee Wallace (ET, THE HOWLING). To say they're the stars without also mentioning Pat Morita, Ruth Gordon, Don Adams and Fay Hauser is a big disingenuous as everyone in this movie has almost the same amount of screen time. The lone exception is Gary Coleman who, for being the lead, is missing from a large portion of the movie. Based on the Donald E. Westlake novel of the same name, JIMMY THE KID follows a bumbling gang of small-time crooks who kidnap the son of a wealthy couple who are surprisingly pretty casual about the whole situation. The plan goes horribly wrong for no other reason than everyone in this movie is an idiot. JIMMY THE KID is part Get Smart (thanks to Don Adams essentially acting like the private investigator version of Maxwell Smart) and part wacky comedy where a car chase takes up 30 minutes of it's short 80 minute run time. We talk about Dee Wallace getting snubbed from the movie poster, VW Vanagons, Pat Morita doing his absolute with a nothing role, and why this movie is so important in the history of New World Pictures. Plus, Ryan does a dramatic reading that we hope gets the attention of the powers that be at Audible. You listening, Audible?
Man's best friend bites the hand that feeds him this week as we discuss two films where dogs are the threat. WHITE DOG (1982) about a disturbing attack dog, stars Kristy McNichol and Paul Winfield. Directed by Samuel Fuller with a Screenplay By Fuller and Curtis Hanson. CUJO (1983) finds a woman put to a deadly test when a rabid dog attacks her family. Dee Wallace stars in this film based on the Stephen King novel.
Send us your movie recommendations! This week, Captain and Wilson discuss the 2024 horror, "Stream," which is a modern slasher with streaming twist. It takes place at an isolated hotel that is turned into a murderous arena where killers compete for the highest body count while online viewers place bets on the bloodshed. The film features Jeffrey Combs, Tim Reid, Dee Wallace, Danielle Harris, and Tony Todd (...and a teeny smidge of Tim Curry). The film discussion begins around 18:05.
Nick catches up with filmmaker, podcaster, and journalist Amy Guth to hear about her latest projects and the behind-the-scenes grind of getting a movie made. They talk about the quirks of working in a foreign language, the translation tools that make it possible, and the challenge of posting exciting updates on social media when most days are just paperwork and meetings. The conversation also drifts into the return of King of the Hill and a few other pop culture side roads. Esmeralda Leon then joins Nick for a lively recap of their time at the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention. From hanging out with Dee Wallace to handling Q&As and making a few too many vendor room purchases, they share stories from the event and wrap things up with a nostalgic dive into 90s pop culture. [Ep 375]
Nick sits down with horror icon Danielle Harris to talk all things Flashback Weekend. From her early days as a child actor in the “Halloween” franchise to her scene-stealing role in the “Hatchet” films, Danielle shares what it's been like growing up in the genre and how she's managed to keep things bloody and badass ever since. She also teases her return to Flashback Weekend for a “Hatchet” cast reunion and some unforgettable celebrity photo-ops. Nick and Danielle get into her other life as a podcast host, the unique bond horror fans have with the actors they grew up screaming at, and what she still loves most about working in the genre. Then Esmeralda Leon joins Nick to preview all the madness in store at this year's Flashback Weekend, including a live taping of this very show. Special guests like Svengoolie and Dee Wallace will hit the stage at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare, and if you're in the crowd, you might just become part of the show. [Ep 371]
Nick previews all the bloody fun coming to the Flashback Weekend Horror Convention, including a special live taping of this podcast with Esmeralda Leon, special guests Svengoolie and actress Dee Wallace (yes, the mom from E.T.), and the chance for fans to be part of the action. It's happening soon, and Nick's ready for mayhem. Later, he's joined by food writer and horror superfan Marnie Shure for a chat about her clever pieces like Trail to Taproom and Sauteed Standup, and what she's been watching lately. From the cult classic They Live to early reactions to 28 Years Later, it's a feast of horror talk. Then Esma returns to share more Flashback excitement and muse on the joys of aging, Ozzy Osbourne's final bow, and the new season of South Park, which kicks off with a jaw-dropping premiere. [Ep 370]
With the annual Flashback Weekend Horror Convention just around the corner, Nick welcomes Mike Kerz—the man behind the madness—for a look at how this beloved event began and how it's grown into a horror fan's dream. From humble roots to a stacked lineup featuring Robert Englund, Dee Wallace, Joe Dante, Devon Sawa, Danielle Harris, and the casts of Terrifier, Re-Animator, The Howling, and more, this year's gathering at the Hyatt Regency O'Hare (Aug. 1–3) promises serious screams and nostalgia. Nick and Mike reflect on over two decades of hosting panels, fan memories, and the joy of celebrating genre film with a passionate community. Then Esmeralda Leon jumps in for a wide-ranging conversation about gentrification, the corporate takeover of everything from coffee to culture, and why Meg Ryan's character in You've Got Mail is actually the villain. It's horror, heart, and a little hypocrisy—all in one show. [Ep 367]

As we already established on our The Dead Zone podcast, 1983 was the Year of the King. That year, Stephen King fans were treated to not one, not two, but THREE adaptations of the author's work. The Dead Zone, Christine, and Cujo. Now common usage to explain a mean dog, Cujo had next to zero meaning to people who picked the book up ready to read King's first all out horror novel in years. Like Drew Barrymore in Firestarter, producers once again used ET as a stepping point, and plucked everyone's favorite mom Dee Wallace to star in a film about her and her son (Who's The Boss's Danny Pintauro) being terrorized by the film's title character. Listen in as Garrett, Matt, and Adam talk about the film many (King included) count as among their favorite adaptations of King's work. Will Adam think the same as, unsurprisingly, this is yet another first time viewing for him? And how did Garrett stumble upon the book, making it the first King novel he ever read? Find out by clicking below! And be sure to come back next week, as Matt finally gets to talk about Ah-nold Schwarzenegger when the co-hosts review the first Richard Bachman adaptation, The Running Man!
Eleven years after the original movie, someone decided it was finally time to make a sequel, or remake, or name their own gator movie after it? All this and more is unclear in this week's episode of ALLIGATOR APRIL on ALLIGATOR 2: THE MUTATION (1991). Starring Dee Wallace, Steve Railsback and Richard Lynch. Is it better than the first? Synopsis Red Christmas follows a blended family headed by matriarch Diane (Dee Wallace) as they prepare to celebrate Christmas together. When an unexpected cloaked figure pops up on their doorstep and insists on reading a letter he wrote for his mother to the family, long time secrets Diane has been keeping are revealed, along with a suspicious murderous spree. Review There is a fine line between a campy movie and a really bad movie, and this film toes that line swimmingly. The movie is insane, it makes no sense at times, it's funny, it's wacky, it has really good kills, and it's a Christmas movie. What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than to watch someone get axed hotdog style. I like this movie for its campiness, it's very entertaining and while a lot of the plot is not logical, it is a fun slasher movie that you can enjoy with a cup of hot cocoa and some figgy pudding. It's not the best movie of all time but it's not trying to be. It's trying to be a campy slasher romp, and that's exactly what it is. If you can ignore the screwed up ‘message' of the movie and just focus on how lovely Dee Wallace is, then you can enjoy this film. Score 7/10
