As most of us are preparing for the most wonderful time of the year (the Jack-o'-lantern one…not the Bells and Holly one), Spill Your Guts is taking this episode to the day of romance and cupid and dead flowers wrapped up nicely. And there is no horror film more associated with Valentine's Day than “My Bloody Valentine”. This 1981 classic has become seminal title in the pantheon of horror and did for Valentine's Day what John Carpenter's enduring masterpiece “Halloween” and “Friday the 13th” did for the respective dates. My Bloody Valentine has endured the test of time and become regular viewing every Valentine's Day for horror fans. It's also Quentin Tarantino's favorite slasher film. High praise…and well deserved. However, the film faced more than its share of challenges in both production and release and was considered a flop (if it was considered at all). There's a long and compelling story to how “My Bloody Valentine” became the classic it is today with action figures, comics, a novel adaptation and even a board game. Joining me to delve into the film as well as his career as a real journeyman filmmaker is My Bloody Valentine's masterful director, George Mihalka. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Alien & Aliens Review:Welcome to Out from the Horrorbox! With your spaced host Dom Higuera! In this episode, we take a look at the first two films in the Alien Franchise. First, the 1979 science fiction horror film directed by Ridley Scott, Alien! In the distant future, the commercial spaceship "Nostromo" crew is on its way home when they pick up a distress call. The crew investigate, and the spaceship descends on the small planetoid afterwards. They explore the area on the planetoid, while at the same time, the ship's computer deciphers the call. When the crew realizes they are not alone on the spaceship, they must deal with the consequences. Then, we check out the 1986 science fiction action film directed by James Cameron, Aliens!57 years after Ellen Ripley had a close encounter with an alien creature, she is called back, this time to help a group of highly trained colonial marines fight off against the sinister extraterrestrials. Things didn't go quite as planned this week on Mostly Horror, but sometimes that makes for the most interesting conversations. With our guest lineup shifting last minute, we start by unpacking the shocking news of Charlie Kirk's assassination, reflecting on his controversial career, the polarizing reactions online, and the bigger cultural questions moments like this stir up. From there, we rewind to one of our earliest interviews with Goosebumps illustrator Tim Jacobus, a creative influence who shaped our love of horror from the start. It's an unusual mix of current events and horror nostalgia, but it all comes together as a reminder of why we explore the dark, the strange, and the unforgettable in every episode. Welcome back to Spill Your Guts! I'm your host, Kevin Lane. We took some time over the summer to recalibrate and get ahead of creating a hell of a lineup for all our listeners. We've been doing Spill Your Guts for over 80 episodes now, and I can safely say that this is going to be some of our best. We are also doing a literary series with the biggest authors in horror fiction. It's a very exciting time for horror readers, as there are so many brilliant and diverse authors out there, creating stories that are reshaping the genre and what we've come to expect. This episode features one such author. Christopher Golden is a New York Times bestselling author and Bram Stoker Award winner, and he's become a household name in horror fiction with masterfully written novels such as "Snowblind", "Ararat", "Road of Bones", "All Hallows", and "The Nightbirds", to name a few.His work moves like a runaway train of terror and atmosphere that has caused me to read most of them in one sitting. There are few authors working that can compete with Christopher in creating the pace and atmosphere that he does. We also discuss his new anthology book, which he co-edited with Brian Keene, based in the world of Stephen King's iconic "The Stand", of which King himself gave the book his blessing. It's a must-have book for King fans, and really anyone who loves horror. It features stories from a long list of the greatest writers working in the genre today. The book is called "The End of the World as we know it", and is available now. So let's explore the worlds of frosty ghosts, spectral savage wolves, the true darkness of Halloween, and the scariest witches I have ever encountered in the history of horror. Daniel Gonzalez wanted fame — but not on stage or screen. Obsessed with horror films like Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Gonzalez spiralled into drug abuse, mental illness, and violent fantasies that turned him into one of Britain's most notorious killers. Joshua Lastine is an entertainment attorney and the founder of Lastine Entertainment Law, representing actors, directors, writers, producers and more. A former in-house lawyer at Lionsgate and ViacomCBS, he has worked on high-profile projects such as Halloween (2018) and The Blackening, as well as massive Netflix productions, indie films, and everything in between.Recognized by Variety as a Hollywood Deal Maker, Joshua also serves as an adjunct lecturer in Entertainment Business Law at The Los Angeles Film School.A lifelong horror fan with a collection of VHS, DVDs, and Blu-rays, Josh brings deep genre knowledge to his legal practice, helping creators navigate contract pitfalls, IP disputes, distribution hurdles, and budget constraints. Since founding Lastine Entertainment Law in 2021, he has been dedicated to empowering artists and safeguarding their creative rights while bridging the worlds of horror fandom and Hollywood deal-making.In this conversation, Josh breaks down the legal and contractual realities that every filmmaker needs to understand, from optioning IP and attaching talent to navigating distribution deals and protecting your rights. He also shares practical advice on unions, strikes, and why legal literacy is one of the most empowering tools a creative can have.On today's episode of The Nick Taylor Horror Show, here, without further ado, is Joshua Lastine.Key TakeawaysBuild your legal relationship early.Joshua's first counsel is simple. Do not wait for a contract to land in your inbox. Grab coffee with an entertainment lawyer, establish rapport, and get them looped in before deals apply pressure. He even outlines a smart starter plan for indies: raise an initial 25K for a line producer, budget, legal, and accounting, so chain of title and financing agreements are set before momentum stalls.Know your money lanes. He breaks down the big buckets: equity, debt, tax credits, and crowdfunding. Debt requires careful counsel. Equity means real finance docs and a clean LLC structure. Crowdfunding can be powerful when paired with creative perks, like the Eli Roth “we will kill you on screen” idea that trades access for cash.Investors buy more than ROI.For many backers, the value is experience and access: a set visit, a cameo for a family member, festival credentials. Pitch decks and sizzles matter, but so do relationships, attachments, and a clear sense of your project's look and tone in seconds. Package visually and socially, not just financially.Product placement is real money.Joshua points to Smile weaving Voss Water into its story as a character beat, likely putting real cash onto the screen. He and Nick also cite Weapons using Liquid Death cans in a 7-Eleven fight scene. The takeaway: brands can offset costs or boost perceived scale if you integrate them thoughtfully and on-brand.Keep chain of title airtight.Lawyers can't help if ownership is murky. Joshua stresses that rights must flow cleanly from screenplay to delivery, or distributors and E&O carriers will balk. This is the “heavy lifting” that protects your sale, your investors, and your future library value.Use AI and templates with judgment. For tiny, low-risk projects, basic templates or AI can help you start. The moment budgets rise, name talent appears, or you touch debt and distribution, you need a lawyer shepherding the paperwork and negotiating terms. That is the difference between scrappy and exposed.Understand franchise rights before you touch legacy IP.He...

In 1996, the world of video gaming was forever changed by the release of Capcom's “survival horror” masterwork “Resident Evil” on the Sony PlayStation. In fact, the term “survival horror”, now a common-place name for a subgenre of horror gaming, was originated by “Resident Evil”.Survival horror itself can be defined as a genre of video games with a focus on surviving in a threatening, often supernatural or disturbing environment, with an emphasis on a more vulnerable central character, tension, limited resources and combat as a last resort.Sound like a vast number of great horror games that have come since the original “Resident Evil”?Whether it's the steeped in atmospheric dread of the “Silent Hill” franchise, the cosmic Lovecraftian terror of the “Dead Space” games, the nerve-frying corridors of the “Amnesia” series or the Stephen King-esque small town horror of “Alan Wake” and its sequel, the influence of “Resident Evil” has played a pivotal role in forming horror gaming. In this episode I am joined by the stars of the most recent “Resident Evil” games. They have taken the three most iconic characters of the franchise and not only made them their own, but also brought real gravity and psychological complexity that has helped redefine the series and what we thought we could expect from it.Welcome Nicole Tompkins who plays Jill Valentine in the “Resident Evil 3” reimaging and the animated film “Resident Evil: Death Island” as well as Daniela Dimitrescu and Elena in “Resident Evil Village”, Jeff Schine who plays Carlos in the “Resident Evil 3” reimagining and Chris Redfield in “Resident Evil Village” and Nick Apostolides who plays Leon Kennedy in the reimagining's of “Resident Evil 2” and “Resident Evil 4” as well as the TV mini-series “Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness”.We discuss their approaches to adapting these legacy characters, the indelible imprint of the franchise, how it's not as different from film acting as some may think, as well as their most requested line readings. Let's explore the dangers of Raccoon City and beyond, survive a world of endless zombies and undead Doberman's, expose shadowy secret evil organizations and visit a village of crazed occultist with Nicole Tompkins, Jeff Schine and Nick Apostolides! ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
