When the young Zion, Ill., band Local H shrunk from four members to two, leader Scott Lucas decided he liked the guitar-and-drums attack and has stuck with it for more than 30 years. Local H has had its moments of popularity (the 1996 album As Good As Dead and single “Bound for the Floor”), critical triumphs that fell short commercially (1998's dazzling concept album Pack Up the Cats) and subsequent albums that showcase Lucas' smart, melodic songwriting, his formidable vocal and guitar chops, and the duo's ferocious interplay. Local H is marking the 20th anniversary of Whatever Happened to P.J. Soles?, the album that Lucas thinks best represents him, with deluxe rereleases and shows, including the tour finale Oct. 16 at Metro Chicago. The previous evening Lucas is premiering his hybrid Local H concert film Lifers at Chicago's Music Box Theatre. The ever-thoughtful Lucas has much to say about bands, labels, maintaining a vision and the meaning of success.

Oh, Hey! Welcome back to another blood curdling episode of The Mystic Meals Podcast! At the table with me this week is that horribly wicked cool cat lurking around the graveyard... Zombie Dave Reda! I've known this meow for quite some time and I gotta say, this was such a blast of an interview. More like a bunch of silliness and two meows catching up and capturing a great conversation about horror films, food, and Zombie Dave's latest short film that's setting the festival circuit ablaze, As Good As Dead! Dave literally puts his heart and soul into his work and is a dedicated meow to his craft. The love of the film industry is in his blood! He serves us his family history and how his Grandfather owned movie theaters in Kentucky, one of which still exists today! Dave also shares with us his heartfelt experience with the awesome cast and crew of As Good As Dead, and the dearly departed meows it's dedicated to. From his favorite Pizza joint, Coca Cola, and what he orders from McDonalds, Zombie Dave doesn't hold back with what he likes to munch on besides the occasional bowl of brains! A touching story about his Grandmother's Gnocchi, to what he would be as a three course meal, prepare yourself for a disturbingly delicious ride through Zombie Land! So... Grab yourself a yummy snack, a tasty beverage to wash it down, and get ready to taste A Bloody Glaze with Zombie Dave Reda! And me! Metal Prophecy states that TB4 (The Big 4) made a pact with TAI (The Almighty Iommi) to unite like some ginormous Voltronesque Thrash Beast for the furtherance and advancement of Thrash (and really, ALL Metal, but mostly, REALLY Thrash) to a new frontier (or perhaps even “a new level”, you might say…) of unheralded, unmatched power.  The prophecy required that each of TB4 release an album of their latest and finest work during the same designated Gregorian based calendar year:  1988.     1988 was THE year of The Big 4 (are you (KK) kidding?  That's “not even” (KK) up for debate!), THE rise of “the next wave” of Thrash (ummm (KK) Testament, (KK) Forbidden, (KK) Death Angel MUCH!?), and THE dawn of a “new” Pantera (that's right…OUR (KK) PanterA!!!).   Subtract 3 decades to reach TAOTBA (The Age of The Black Album), subtract another 3 years to reach TAOTAMP (The Age of the Aforementioned Metal Prophecy) and then solve for the variable of WHY the words “Bon Jovi” were EVER uttered within our 33rd Floor Bunker P00n Inversion Studio airspaces before you JOIN US as we embrace the year of the audiogasm in Thrash (and also “other” Metal) and celebrate the YORL (Year of Our Riff Lord) in Metal that could only be 1988!!!   *KK=This post made proudly bland courtesy of Kancel Kulture and the wreckless censorship of mouth farts in print (aka “WORDS”).  Just kidding, it's those kuss words (mouth farts) that hurt their feelers.  This is just dumb, passive-aggressive nonsense that has nothing to do with the original post, but we thank you for reading onward.  Please, Go Listen…Metal Nerdery Podcast is on ALL platforms wherever podcasts are available and its actually way funner than reading, although there are also show notes available that you can read along to, too, that are often mystical, hilarious, and even insightful (assuming you can read.  If not, find someone who can read to you for you.)  Yeah, we've planned for everything!!  (And you're also welcome, btw.)  Oh yeah, THANK YOU for listening!!!  It means an awful bunch.  And if you could send us some relaxers through the gum app, we'd appreciate it.  #TallDenmarkian is the account.  Don't worry, Lars already knows what's up.  Thanks.  We hope you enjoy the show.   Visit www.metalnerdery.com/podcast for more on this episode   Leave us a Voicemail to be played on a future episode: 980-666-8182 Metal Nerdery Tees and Hoodies – metalnerdery.com/merch and kindly leave us a review and/or rating on the iTunes/Apple Podcasts - Spotify or your favorite Podcast app Listen on iTunes, Spotify, Podbean, Google Play or wherever you get your Podcasts. On today's episode, we re-enter the Afro-Latino Actors Studio with Carlos Carrasco: actor, filmmaker, and director of the Panamanian International Film Festival. Last week, in part 1 of our conversation, Mr. Carrasco took the lead on stage, then gave us the VIP tour backstage, behind the curtains, where we glimpsed into what it is like to be an immigrant Afro-Latino in acting in the United States, and how this experience impacted his identity and drove him to also dedicate his time to social impact causes for Latin actors, theatre, and film. In today's conversation, we examine the heart of art, how the sounds of things carry the emotions of things, we deconstruct language into its most fundamental pieces, and explore how art is a process of selection. Born in Panamá City, Panamá, Carlos Carrasco has appeared as an actor on Broadway and Off Broadway in New York City, as well as appearing at many of the country's regional theaters. He appeared on Broadway in the Circle-In-The-Square's production of "The National Health” and has appeared at The Hartford Stage Co., Shakespeare & Co., Atlanta's Alliance Theatre, The Arizona Theatre Co., The Folger Theatre and The American Shakespeare Theatre. Off- Broadway he appeared with The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, INTAR, Theatre for a New Audience and The New York Shakespeare Festival. Mr. Carrasco has co-starred in such feature films as "Speed," "Blood In...Blood Out," “Turnover,” “Parker,” ”One Man's Hero," "The Burning Season" and "The Fisher King." On television he has been a guest on many prime time series, including “Insecure,” “CSI,” "Star Trek: Deep Space 9," " ER,” "Seaquest," "Hunter," "The Equalizer" and the made for television movies "As Good As Dead" and "Have You Seen My Son?”. Mr. Carrasco has been active in the non-profit sector, serving for six years as Executive Director of the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors, serving for three years on the Theatre panel for the New York State Council on the Arts and currently producing a Latin American film festival, The Panamanian International Film Festival, now entering its seventh season. As filmmaker, Mr. Carrasco has produced and directed five short films, from the documentary “Art Galleries and Back Alleys,” celebrating the East Los Angeles Artists Collaborative Self-Help Graphics to the more recent “One” and “Disarm” tackling the difficult issues of police and school shootings. I had the honor of speaking with Carlos Carrasco on the 29th of August, 2020. This vivacious, cultured and multi-faceted individual grew up in New York City.  Her childhood neighborhood in Brooklyn was an ethnic mosaic of Italians, Irish, Russians, Blacks, and Hassidic Jews. Her multicultural heritage and pre-disposed inquisitive nature made it very easy for Claudine to relate to the diverse denizens of her surroundings. Her unique and enviable upbringing has allowed her to become fluent in 5 languages. She will humbly admit, that through music as a child, she taught herself Spanish and Italian, in order to converse with her friend’s parents. Her intelligence and aptitude in math and science influenced her to study electrical engineering.  However, a gifted lifelong performer, who always envisioned a career in entertainment, Claudine could no longer deny her true calling. She vigorously threw herself into the acting world. In addition, to her role in the critically acclaimed, independent Haitian film ‘Pluie d’Espoir’(Rain of Hope), Claudine, can been seen in ‘As Good As Dead’ with British actor Cary Elwes, and in “My Girlfriend’s Back” with CCH Pounder and Malik Yoba, In “Blonde Ambition,” playing Penny Marshall’s lawyer. And shot “Norah’s Hair Salon II,” with Mekhi Phifer and Tatyana Ali. It has been amazing to see how quickly she attains her goals. She co-hosted the red carpet for the 2007 Grammy Awards with world-renowned artist Wyclef Jean and has interviewed notable personalities such as Jay Leno, Dr. Maya Angelou, Haitian President Rene Preval, to name a few. In 2009, she was appointed Vice-President of the Beverly Hills Film Festival. Her passions also lie in making a difference in the lives of others. In April 2009, she co-hosted an event with US Doctors for Africa (USDFA), to support an unprecedented ‘African First Ladies’ health summit. Her humanitarian efforts in Haiti have enriched the lives of many. Her work with the young kids at the ‘Delmas Juvenile Jail’ and her staunch belief in the value of education prompted her to collaborate with the Municipality of Delmas to build a literacy and learning center to benefit residents throughout the capital. The devastating earthquake that ravaged her homeland prompted her to direct her first documentary entitled ‘Resilient Hearts’ which and has strengthen her resolve and commitment to Haiti. Her charm and passionate determined personality win people over instantly, her perfectionism will always deliver above par results, and her strong drive guarantees that once she sets her mind to something, there is no stopping her.Instagram @claudineoriol

El álbum incluía tres canciones escritas por el ex guitarrista Robb Flynn ("Chalice Of Blood", "Forbidden Evil" y "As Good As Dead").

The PurposeGirl Podcast: Empowering women to live their purpose with courage, joy, and fierce self-love.

That inner voice is calling to you – will you answer? Inside each of us is the call of the Goddess, or as I like to say, a purpose; something we were all meant to do and meant to be. This call is powerful beyond measure, and if you listen to it and really pay attention to what is being told to you, it will not only guide your life, but provide the opportunity, too. This has manifested for me in creating PurposeGirls – my calling is to inspire, and to light women up. Today's incredible, passionate, brilliant guest has listened to her calling – as she says – from the moment she could think. Nicole Ansari is an award-winning actor, director, writer and producer who has been living her purpose since before she even knew it was an active decision to do so. When you live in alignment, the opportunities come – and Nicole is the living example of that happening. In this episode, Nicole and I talk about: Nicole's incredible journey of discovering her calling, answering the damn phone, and living it every day. How to learn to understand the signals you are getting – both internal and external - so you can find and live in your own calling and purpose. Positive evidence of someone who has found success – even in a potentially challenging industry! – living in her purpose, so you know you can also live in yours. Juicy details about Nicole's newest project:   About Nicole Ansari: Nicole Ansari's professional life began in her teens as an actor in Tatort, an iconic German Cop TV series. Ansari studied with the late legendary Uta Hagen, of HB Studios, with Susan Batson at the Actors Studio in NYC and at the Stage School of Dance and Drama in Hamburg. Following this, she joined the famed Théâtre du Soleil under the direction of Ariane Mnouchkine, in Paris and on a European tour. Her next steps led to being a guest star at the Public Theatre in Vienna in leading roles, multiple arthouse movies and TV shows, including HBO's Deadwood. She continued on to London's West End and Broadway, performing with her husband Brian Cox, and eventually creating a home base in New York. Ansari co-produced two feature Films; “Blumenthal”, a comedy in the New York Theatre world, starring her husband Brian Cox and the thriller “As Good As Dead” with Andy McDowell. Adding to her CV as Co-producer + director, is the short documentary “Padim at PS3” about the Arts program in a NYC public school and the web series “Messy”. Messy has garnered numerous awards on the festival circuit including Best Director and Best Dramedy at the British Web Awards; Best Web Series at the NY International Film Awards, and best Web Series at the Chicago Independent Film Awards. “You get a sense of who's important, what's important, and hopefully people will realize what you had by just being able to go out and see other people, be in a room, and actually be present.” Scott Lucas is the lead singer and guitarist of Local H, an alt rock band out of Zion, Illinois — a small town about an hour north of Chicago. He and three high school friends founded the group together in 1990, but by 1993, two of them had left and Local H carried on as a duo, with Joe Daniels on drums and Scott playing a modified guitar with an added bass pickup to round out the sound. Brian St. Clair and Ryan Harding would spend stints as Local H's drummer but Scott, through thick and thin, has persisted through the whole three decades, which has seen nine studio LPs, countless shows — a few of them opening for Metallica — and the commercial breakthrough record, As Good As Dead, which is headlined by single, “Bound for the Floor,” a track that reached number five on the Billboard Modern Rock charts. We chatted about the influence of a small town identity, the power of persistence, the secret to the exact ratio of toilet paper needed per neighborhood, and Local H's new record, Lifers, which features an all-star cast, from Juliana Hatfield to John McCauley (Deer Tick) to legendary engineer, Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Joanna Newsom, Iggy Pop). It's the band's first LP since 2015 and it's excellent. Concept albums are as old as albums themselves, though defining what exactly qualifies as a concept album is flexible. The 90s were no different, as many bands and artists took loose ideas and strung together narratives and themes to form a cohesive idea. Of all the bands you were probably expecting to do so back in day, Local H was probably not high on that list, but songwriter/guitarist/singer Scott Lucas has dipped into the concept album well often during the past several decades, first with their 1996 break-through As Good As Dead, and then the 1998 follow-up Pack Up The Cats. Lucas and drummer Joe Daniels weave a tale not unfamiliar to rock fans - the rise and fall of a musician, but with the decade specific twists and turns that make it a uniquely 90s affair, both lyrically and sonically, and craft a concept album worthy of the decades medium of choice: the compact disc. This week we look at 1996, a year that celebrated the past while looking to the future. In part 1, we dig into the first half of 1996; and it was a busy six months. January includes stories on the evils of Alternative Rock and near fatal incidents involving some big name celebrities. Additionally, it included new releases from ACCEPT and Mr. Big. We head into February of 1996 by discussing some fantastic rock releases. It was a month that included fresh material from Bad Religion and Enuff Z'nuff. It also featured new releases by veteran artists like Deep Purple as well as Bruce Dickinson.  February 28th was a monumental day for KISS fans as the original band appeared in full regalia at the Grammy Awards. This week we give you our reactions to this event as well as our take on the mania that was the KISS Reunion Tour. [caption id="attachment_34556" align="alignright" width="300"] 1996 Year in Review Part 1 [/caption] The month of March, 1996 was a busy on in the rock and metal world. Judas Priest returned with a new lead singer, KISS released MTV Unplugged, and Stone Temple Pilots solidified their standing with Tiny Music. Additionally, the Beatles returned to the top of the heap with their Anthology album release. The big story of April 1996 is certainly the Unabomber arrest. Ted Kaczynski was found holed up in a Montana cabin after years of harm. Also, Local H releases their As Good As Dead album on April 16th. We're not drawing any parallels (or are we?). May of 1996 was chock full of great music releases. New material by hard rock stalwarts Scorpions and Great White was premiered. Soundgarden wrapped up their golden age with Down on the Upside. Additionally, new music from King's X and a fantastic one-and-done album by Imperial Drag. We close out this week's episode discussing June of 1996. News stories covered include the Communications Decency Act of 1996 and the kickoff to KISS' reunion tour at Detroit's Tiger Stadium. Music covered in June includes Zakk Wylde's first solo effort, Book of Shadows, and the aforementioned KISS with their You Wanted the Best release. We had a blast looking back at the first half of 1996. Included in this episode are discussions of sports stories of the year as well as popular television shows. BREAKING: A Car Con Carne TV pilot is being worked on as you're reading this. Scott Lucas of super-huge Chicago band Local H joined me for the pilot's first shoot, at BRGRBELLY in Portage Park (truly one of Chicago's best burger joints). This episode is a mostly-unedited audio version of that segment. I had to cut out a big part of the intro, which was mostly played for the camera and had a ton of bag rustling and background noise. Unfortunately, that means the formal introduction to Scott and a lot of our praise for BRGRBELLY hit the podcast cutting room floor. To paraphrase what was said: Scott's my guest and BRGRBELLY rules. Local H is simply one of Chicago's best bands, and Lucas is one of its most talented songwriters. It was a blast eating burgers on camera and on-mic with him. Topics covered in this episode: *The 20th anniversary of the landmark "As Good As Dead" album, and its corresponding tour (the family-friendly "Two Balls and a Dick" tour) *Scott's vegetarianism (his portobello burger was like a "vegetarian steak") *Rock: Led Zeppelin, Rush and the Police *Why Local H is like Genesis (my opinion; not sure he agreed) *Local H's first local arena show, opening for Stone Temple Pilots *Local H's audience ("It's nice to see people happy. You can't underestimate that.") *Scott's favorite Chicago places to play *Scott's favorite Chicago bars to close down I've long said that Car Con Carne is the future of car-based food podcasting. Here's hoping it can also be the future of car-based food television.
