English novelist Daisy Hildyard envisions the deep time evolution of the coastline of Scarborough, North Yorkshire: from a prehistoric meteor strike, to a 19th-century seaside aquarium devoid of fish, a present-day spate of dead tides, and a future where part of the human population has evolved into a hybrid marine species, drawn back to the cradle of the sea to care for its degraded waters. Vividly narrated by acclaimed British actor Colin Salmon, and created as part of Wild Eye—an art and nature trail in Yorkshire that raises awareness about coastal erosion in the face of climate change—this short story traces the forever-shifting tides of our relationship with the sea.  Read the story. This week on the Everything Actioncast, whoever wins, we lose because we're talking about 2004's AVP: Alien vs. Predator, which came out 20 years ago this week. There's also a new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, in theaters right now.Directed by schlockmeister Paul WS Anderson, AVP: Alien vs Predator pits the two intergalactic entities against each other in an Antarctic pyramid discovered by Weyland Industries. The company's head, Charles Weyland (Lance Henriksen) wants to claim the structure in his name as one last grand action before he dies from a terminal disease and he assembles a team that includes scientists, drillers and Alexa Woods (Sanaa Lathan), an expert guide in arctic environments. The group explores the pyramid but soon finds themselves caught between the Xenomorphs and the Predators, with the pyramid being a training ground for young Predator warriors to prove themselves or die in a rite of passage. Zach and Chris discuss how there was over a decade of hype for this battle from the comics and games, the lack of any interesting kills thanks to the PG-13 rating, how the Antarctic environment doesn't affect anything, how quickly most of the Predators die, and more. You can watch AVP: Alien vs Predator on Hulu. The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories. Resident Evil is a 2002 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1997. Several writers and filmmakers, such as Alan B. McElroy, George A. Romero and Jamie Blanks, were initially hired to direct and write the film, but their scripts were rejected. In 2000, Anderson was announced as writer and director. Developed as a prequel set in the same continuity as the video game series, the film was initially titled Resident Evil: Ground Zero, but was retitled after the September 11 attacks. Cast was announced in early 2001 and principal photography commenced in March 2001 in Berlin. Resident Evil was theatrically released in Germany on March 12, 2002, by Constantin Film Verleih, and in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2002, by Screen Gems and Pathé Distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $103 million worldwide against a production budget of $33 million. It was followed by five sequels establishing their own alternate continuity: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

Jackie Byers and Christian Navarro are stepping out of their comfort zone in their latest horror movie, Prey for The Devil, which already has horror fans talking. Byers (Sister Ann) has to deal with archaic values from the church as she faces her demons, while Navarro (Father Dante) helps guide her along but soon finds himself in trouble. Byers said she had so much fun filming the movie and working with the special effects, adding that while it adds an element for an actor to stretch their skill set, it is also incredibly hard and awkward. Meanwhile, Navarro said that he enjoyed everything about Father Dante, including his good nature, always putting others before himself. Navarro also paid homage to 13 Reasons Why saying that, that show taught him so much about acting, and this movie further is something he is also really proud of. Host: Monica Gleberman Editor: Corinna Caimi Social Media Graphic: Jojo -- Synopsis: Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) believes she is answering a calling to be the first female exorcist… but who, or what, called her? In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, Ann seeks out a place at an exorcism school reopened by the Catholic Church. Until now these schools have only trained priests in the Rite of Exorcism – but a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann's gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl, who Sister Ann believes is possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago. Determined to root out the evil, Ann soon realizes the Devil has her right where he wants her. *Prey for The Devil will be in theaters nationwide on October 28, 2022 Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @SilenceonSet and Instagram @SilenceonSetPod

Scares are one thing....but when there's an idea behind them it makes it all that much more potent and believable. On this episode we are getting into the Halloween swing of things with a new movie that is hitting Cineplex theatres this coming Friday.  It's time to 'Prey For The Devil'.Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers) believes she is answering a calling to be the first female exorcist… but who, or what, called her? In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, Ann seeks out a place at an exorcism school reopened by the Catholic Church. Until now these schools have only trained priests in the Rite of Exorcism – but a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann's gifts and agrees to train her. Determined to root out the evil, Ann soon realizes the Devil has her right where he wants her. It's a fresh take on the subgenre of the exorcism movie and it takes a compassionate and logical angle on the issue as well, but don't worry there's still plenty of creepy moments to have you on the edge of your seat.We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with director Daniel Stamm and (Toronto's own) Jacqueline Byers to talk about the origins of the story, the importance of the idea behind it all and so very much more....

Tread Perilously starts a month of "promises kept" by finally taking a look at Highlander: The Series with the low-rated episode called "The Zone." Duncan and Charlie make their way to "The Zone" when Joe alerts them to a possible Immortal organizing the homeless in the economically depressed part of town. Charlie reveals he grew up in the Zone, but it's very little help as the fully human Canaan cultivates a world of crime and inequality despite speaking words of equality and revolution. For Duncan, it suddenly becomes personal and he vows to bring Canaan down. Erik and Justin review why The Highlander was the romance approved for cis-het boys in the 1980s. They get lost in a conversation about masculinity, action hero quipping, and 80s genre movies in general. The accents of the Immortals also come into question. Erik explains the loss of the "Drunken Idaho" moment in Denis Villeneuve's Dune. He also offers a few thoughts on Eternals. Justin points out the startling similarities between Highlander and the Buffyverse. The pair suggest some different casting decisions for Aliens and Streets of Fire. Colin Salmon gets praised despite not being in the episode and Michael Shanks makes a surprise appearance.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema In the final installment of Catching Up On Cinema's “Drinking Movie Month,” Kyle and Trevor review Lexi Alexander's, Punisher: War Zone (2008). Released as part of the short-lived Marvel Knights project, the film is the third live-action adaptation of the comic book property following the Dolph Lundgren version from the late 80's, and the Thomas Jane headlined one from just 4 years prior. Directed by Lexi Alexander, the film is simultaneously the most explicitly gory violent, as well as the most aesthetically vibrant and colorful of Punisher films. Starring Ray Stevenson as perhaps the most visually “correct” version of The Punisher on film according to the comic book canon, the movie also boasts a solid supporting cast in the form of Dominic West as a scenery chewing Jigsaw, Bruce Hutchinson as his brother LBJ, Colin Salmon as action hero in training Agent Budiansky, and Julie Benz as the token Lionsgate leading lady from the late 2000's. Tread Perilously's Doctor Who month continues with the two-part New Series story "Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead." When the Doctor receives a telepathic summons to help out at The Library -- the galaxy's largest repository of books -- he and Donna meet Professor River Song. The archeologist is leading an expedition to The Library as it was sealed 100 years earlier under mysterious circumstances. Of course, that does not explain why Professor Song is so damned familiar with the Doctor. He's at a loss to explain it or why the library insists all the visitors who vanished a century ago were saved. But will he be able to save the Professor's team from perfect predators who lurk in the shadows? Erik and Justin get into the timey-wimey-ness of it all. They also heap praise on guest stars Alex Kingston and Colin Salmon. Discussion inevitably leads to the strengths and weaknesses of both Steven Moffat and Russell T. Davies. The pair also try to figure out if the number "42" is meaningful to either Doctor Who head writer. Justin tries to imagine what the Fourth or Seventh Doctor would do in this situation. He also gets distracted when he recognizes members of River's team from other TV shows. Erik ends up trying to explain some long-running Doctor Who continuity gaffs and a certain key phrase gets repeated. Also, the Marty Scale makes its Tread Perilously debut.

Sometimes the man you don't notice is the most dangerous of all. Bob Odenkirk stars as Hutch Mansell, an underestimated and overlooked dad and husband, taking life's indignities on the chin and never pushing back. A NOBODY. When two thieves break into his suburban home one night, Hutch declines to defend himself or his family, hoping to prevent serious violence. The aftermath of the incident strikes a match to Hutch's long-simmering rage, triggering dormant instincts and propelling him on a brutal path that will surface dark secrets and lethal skills.DIRECTOR: Ilya NaishullerWRITER: Derek KolstadFOLLOW USFollow Daniel on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow Shahbaz on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow Anthony on Twitter, Instagram, and LetterboxdFollow The Movie Podcast on Twitter, Instagram, Discord, and YouTube

This week we have a special guest host, Adam, of the soon to be released, Deep Cuts Matinee podcast. Be sure to follow Slashers for more updates as we will be happily sharing our friends' work. Based on the game of the same name... well not exactly, because the game is also called Biohazard... oh and virtually nothing from the game makes it into the movie... Well, based on one of the titles for the game, we are reviewing Resident Evil (2002). As we have through the entire "Button Smashers" month of June, we talk not only about the film, but the underlying game franchise as well. For instance, did you know that George A. Romero directed a Japanese commercial for Biohazard 2? Of all the films we have done this month, Resident Evil's film and game franchises are the most expansive. Hell, we even talk the novelization of this film, which is completely unnecessary. The film was written and directed by, Paul W.S. Anderson, who penned all of the films in the franchise, including: Apocalypse (2004), Resident Evil: Extinction (2007), Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), Resident Evil: Retribution (2012), and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016). You may recall his name as the director of the film we reviewed in our pilot episode, Event Horizon, and last week's episode, Mortal Kombat. The soundtrack features an interesting collaboration with Marco Beltrami and Marilyn Manson. Beltrami did tons of movies in this era like Scream, The Faculty, Underworld Evolution, and Mimic, but went on to work on films like Logan and A Quiet Place. Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element, Hellboy, and the upcoming Monster Hunter) plays Alice. Fun fact: she later went on to become Mrs. Paul W.S. Anderson. Michelle Rodriguez of Fast and the Furious fame, is in this film. She later went on to appear in the tragically terrible Bloodrayne. Did you know she was arrested for assault the year Resident Evil came out? I did. I just forgot to mention it on the show. Eric Mabius found his way into the film after skulking through The Crow: Salvation. Years before appearing in Alien vs. Predator, Colin Salmon, appeared in this film. You may remember him as the guy from the hallway who would fit into an ice cube tray. This week's "Hidden Track" is by Project 19. It is called Torn by the Thread. Regi: Paul W. Farewell to KRYPTON -- And Thank You For A Better Tomorrow

Emerald City Video

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2019 13:12

Hello, and welcome to the Emerald City Video Podcast. This is Russ Burlingame, and tonight is going to be a little different than usual. Today saw the cancellation of KRYPTON, a TV series that ran for two seasons on SYFY and which was not just one of my personal favorite shows on TV but one of the series that has kind of shown me the most love in return. Along with Deadly Class, also cancelled this season on SYFY, these are two of the only shows that have ever quoted me in TV spots. The series was a huge critical hit, especially in its second season, and its cancellation is 100% one of those situations where the ratings did not keep up with the reputation of the show. I’m not going to go after SYFY for this choice; the show was averaging almost 2 million viewers in its first season and was the third-highest-rated show on the network. A year and change later, it’s barely pulling 400,000. Krypton centers on the character of Seg-El — played by Cameron Cuffe. Seg is the grandfather of Superman, and there is a time-travel element that created something of a ticking clock in the first season. If they didn’t stop the bad guys, it would mean that Superman never existed, and Earth’s future is doomed. By the end of the first season, though, the characters had made things infinite worse, and not only was Set exiled to the Phantom Zone, but Zod was in control of Krypton, and years in the future, that would spell disaster for Earth. Krypton was originally billed as “Game of Thrones in Space,” an easy characterization since they actually filmed in Belfast, where Game of Thrones had, and the series featured Ian McIlhenny of Game of Thrones as See’s grandfather, Val-El. The show actually turned out to be something else entirely, and that led to a few growing pains. Ironically, the most GAME OF THRONES-y scene in the whole first season was probably an argument between Elliot Cowan’s Daron Vex and Ann Ogbomo’s Jayna Zod. I saw that scene being filmed during a set visit to Belfast back in 2017. That same week, they were filming the episode — “House of Zod” — which would fundamentally alter what the show was. It has been a hard few months at SYFY. Happy — a series based on the comics from artist Darick Robertson and writer Grant Morrison — was cancelled after two seasons, and after just a single season and a crazy cliffhanger, the network declined to pick up a second season of Deadly Class, based on the comics from Rick Remender and Wes Craig. Krypton had a sequel planned, based on the character of LOBO, who appeared in the show’s second season, but unless either that pilot, or Krypton, or both, can find a new home, it ain’t going to happen. All of these cancellations happened while the network was waiting on new episodes of WYNONNA EARP, which it actually DID pick up but which failed to go into production on time due to a financial shortfall from IDW Entertainment, the current publishers of Wynonna Earp comics and the series’ producers. Suddenly, WYNONNA is the only comic book show still on the air at SYFY, and it’s currently on a weird, unplanned hiatus. While I am not going to lay into SYFY — working in the entertainment industry I know that almost no network ever roots for a show to fail — I will say that it is a strange choice for them to leave fans hanging on both this and Deadly Class. Genre TV has some of the most passionate fans, and every if there aren’t a lot of them, they will punish you for supposed bad behavior. The easiest thing you can do — and something that almost every other network has already figured out to do — is to renew shows for a “final season” to give the producers time to make a good ending and the fans time to adjust to the fact that their show is going away. While something like Deadly Class, which didn’t make it past the first season, might not have supported such a move, certainly Krypton could have. Whatever the case, Krypton was a gorgeously designed, beautifully-shot, wonderfully-acted show that had real heart and real consequences. That might be a surprise to anybody who hasn’t watched it, since the premise — that a time-traveler from the present was going back in time to keep history intact so that Superman could exist — is just begging for a forgettable series that had no real stakes. But Cameron Welsh, the show runner, along with David Goyer, the writers’ room, and series stars Cameron Cuffe, Shaun Sipos, Georgina Campbell, Wallis Day, and others, would not have anything of the sort.  The show’s Kryptonite was arguably that it was so predictable, and its power was in how completely the producers resisted that. Another strength was in the way the characters were treated. While Seg-El has basically no presence in the comics, and most of the other characters had around the same amount of pages in their history, the series treated each of them like a valuable piece of intellectual property. As far as the show was concerned, the El family was Superman, and Seg was treated with as much seriousness and respect as if he had been his grandson. Colin Salmon played General Dru-Zod, best known as one of Superman’s greatest enemies, and he managed to do what many would have though impossible: he surpassed the standard-setting performance of Terrence Stamp in Superman II. Krypton, more generally, managed to be just as exciting and “alien” on a TV budget as it had in MAN OF STEEL, of which Goyer was a writer. Part of that was the show’s ability to do something movies have not so far: embracing the history of the comics. The Justice League, the Green Lanterns, and more exist in the world of Krypton, and even though we don’t see them, there are clear references to them. That status quo set the stage for the introduction of Doomsday, an ancient, biological weapon created by two of Krypton’s greatest scientists and hidden away underground because it was too dangerous to ever use. In the pilot, Val-El, facing execution for “heresy” because he dared to tell the Science Guild that doom was coming in the form of an alien called Brainiac, reached out to his grandson in his final moments. “Keep believing in a better tomorrow,” he told young Seg, and that message reverberated and echoed through Krypton for two seasons. It was, in a lot of ways, the clearest mission statement that the House of El had since Christopher Reeve declared himself “a friend” back in 1978. As far as narrative themes go, you could do a lot worse for a show about heroes, and the writers even managed to turn it back on itself a few times, with a season 2 episode called “A Better Yesterday.” Krypton, though, was a marvel. It was a technical and creative achievement, filled with talented people who all bounced off one another in a way that made each part better, and elevated the whole. Some iconic characters — notably Zod and Doomsday — had their best versions appear on Krypton, and Seg-El will now be a character who people care about for decades to come, in spite of having had something like a total of 30 pages of comic book story before the show began. The show raised the bar for quality on a comic book show. Certainly it is not alone: series like Deadly Class, The Walking Dead, Doom Patrol, and Gotham all contributed to this movement, but Krypton’s second season earned a 100% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes and, in all likelihood, will have launched the career of some fan-favorite actors before all is said and done. In my day job, of course, I come to know a lot of actors, producers, and the like. Most of them I get along with fine, although it’s rare that I can say with a straight face that I have more than one — MAYBE — friend on any given show. Krypton was different. Krypton was a show full of people who were excited to talk to the press, who were passionate about their stories, and who never failed to know my name when we met up at  crowded events. They followed me on Twitter, they replied to my reviews and theories, and they thanked me for the kind words I had for the show — even though there was no thanks necessary because the only reason I praised it is that they had earned the praise. I will close out, then, with a message for the writers, producers, cast, and crew of KRYPTON. I told Cameron Cuffe something similar in a message I sent him shortly after I heard about the cancellation, but he is not alone. As a viewer of the show and as a reporter who covered it, thank all of you for this gem of a series, which brought me a lot of joy and raised the bar for comic book adaptations on TV. I look forward to what comes next from this stellar cast and crew, and will be more than happy to cover whatever that is. For me, I'm bummed by the loss of a great show, but I'm far more sad for those who are losing jobs and opportunities due to the cancellation. Krypton was a great, talented, and friendly cast and crew that it was a pleasure to get to know and cover over the last year and a half.  And the doors they opened, and the bar they raised, will reverberate into the future, spawning a better class of comic book show and making stars out of some of these young, talented, unknown actors and writers. This particular show, and these particular people, may not be around to enjoy the better tomorrow they have helped to build for the audience, but their contribution will not be forgotten. That’s all I’ve got for tonight, folks, so thanks for listening. Be back by noon on the 5th day for more form Emerald City Video, and keep believing in a better tomorrow. This episode of 'James Bond & Friends' is hosted by James Page with guests Paul Atkinson, Calvin Dyson, and David Leigh.Originally recorded along with Episode 001, we found ourselves descending into general banter about the franchise and the over-arching aspects of how Daniel Craig’s tenure may end and whether Bond 25 is a make or break film. Along the way, we consider watching the films from a different perspective, leaving during the credits, gunbarrel placement, Craig's unfinished business, whipping out a quiche, a budget-breaking third biscuit boy, possible composers and singers, anniversary films, and the disappearance of Colin Salmon. Steven Moffat to be Doctor Who Lead Writer and Executive Producer Category: Wales; TV Drama; BBC One Date: 20.05.2008 Printable version BBC Wales and BBC Drama has announced that BAFTA and Hugo Award-winning writer Steven Moffat will succeed Russell T Davies as Lead Writer and Executive Producer of the fifth series of Doctor Who, which will broadcast on BBC One in 2010. Moffat has penned some of the series' most unforgettable and acclaimed episodes, including Blink, with its terrifying weeping angels, for which he was awarded the BAFTA Writer Award 2008 on Sunday 11 May. His previous work on Doctor Who includes The Girl In The Fireplace for series two, which earned him his second Hugo Award. His first was for the series one two-parter The Empty Child, which became famous for its terrifying refrain "Are you my mummy?" For the current series, Moffat has written Silence In The Library, a two-parter starring Alex Kingston which transmits on 31 May and 7 June 2008 on BBC One. Steven's career began with the landmark ITV children's drama Press Gang in 1989, for which he won his first Bafta. Coupling, the hugely popular and award-winning sitcom he created and wrote for BBC Two, began in 2000 and ran for four seasons. Jekyll, his six-part thriller starring James Nesbitt and Michelle Ryan, transmitted on BBC One last year. Steven will continue as one of the directors on the board of Hartswood Films which produced Coupling and Jekyll, where he is also working on his new comedy Adam & Eve with wife Sue Vertue. He has just delivered the screenplay for Tintin – the first instalment of the trilogy of films featuring the iconic Belgian comic-strip hero – to Steven Spielberg who will direct it for DreamWorks. Thomas Sangster and Andy Serkis will star. Steven Moffat says: "My entire career has been a Secret Plan to get this job. I applied before but I got knocked back 'cos the BBC wanted someone else. Also I was seven. "Anyway, I'm glad the BBC has finally seen the light, and it's a huge honour to be following Russell into the best - and the toughest - job in television. I say toughest 'cos Russell's at my window right now, pointing and laughing." Lead Writer and Executive Producer Russell T Davies says: "It's been a delight and an honour working with Steven, and I can't wait to see where his extraordinary imagination takes the Doctor. Best of all, I get to be a viewer again, watching on a Saturday night!" Jane Tranter, Controller, BBC Fiction, says: "Scripts and writers are at the heart of what BBC Drama is all about, and especially at the heart of Doctor Who. The past four series have been brilliantly helmed by the spectacularly talented Russell T Davies. "As Lead Writer and Executive Producer, he has overseen the creative direction and detail of the 21st century relaunch of Doctor Who and we are delighted to have his continued presence on the specials over the next 18 months. "But the challenge and excitement of the fifth series is now being handed to Steven Moffat. The Tardis couldn't be in safer hands. Steven's talents on both Doctor Who and beyond are well known. He is a writer of glittering brilliance, comedy and depth, with an extraordinary imagination and a unique voice. "Steven has a wonderful mix of being a committed Doctor Who fan and a true artist, and his plans for the next series are totally thrilling." The announcement follows the news that Piers Wenger will take over the role of Executive Producer from Julie Gardner on series five of Doctor Who. Piers Wenger says: "The challenge of taking Doctor Who to a new future is a huge and thrilling one and BBC Wales is blessed to have someone with Steven's extraordinary talent in charge. "His imagination and creativity have already given birth to some of the series' most unforgettable monsters though in this instance no-one need fear; time, space and the future of The Doctor are safe with him." Wenger and Moffat are already working closely together on the planning of the series. Menna Richards, Controller, BBC Wales, says: "BBC Wales is very proud of Doctor Who's phenomenal success. Steven Moffat is an extraordinary talent and we are very much looking forward to him joining the Doctor Who team." Series four has achieved some of the show's highest audience figures to date and forthcoming episodes feature a stellar line-up of guests including Lesley Sharp, Lindsey Coulson, Alex Kingston, Colin Salmon and Michael Brandon. Freema Agyeman and Billie Piper – The Doctor's two former companions – have also returned to assist The Doctor in series four. Doctor Who will return in 2009 with four specials, and the full-length fifth series is currently scheduled to be broadcast on BBC One in Spring 2010. SH
