We've been looking at the Paul WS Anderson/Milla Jovovich Resident Evil movies for what feels like one hundred million years. And it's a crying shame that all of us are coming to realise that these movies might not actually be good. In addition to Alice coming back as always we also get the return of Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Salmon and Oded Fehr characters confirmed long dead. PLUS the introduction of more beloved game characters Leon S. Kennedy and Ada Wong! All this feels like it should add up to something but we're sorry to report that is not the case. This week, it's one zombie battle after another as we talk two big movies from the two big Paul Andersons... it's 2002's Resident Evil, written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Colin Salmon, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy and Martin Crewes. It's a movie that J Mo specifically picked up to do a whole parody of the PTA theme month we did last year (a "P.W.S.Autumn" if you will), so it's only fitting that we actually spend the bulk of this episode talking about Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another, an absolutely stunning cinematic achievement and the best movie of 2025. Meanwhile, Hayley has caught Weapons not once but twice since we last spoke, and we use that as a springboard to look ahead at what we'd like to see from Zach Cregger's next project, as he tries to be true to the gameplaying experience of the original Resident Evil games. All that plus theatrical field reports from Justin on The Conjuring: Last Rites and The Long Walk! If you'd like to watch Resident Evil before listening along to our discussion, it can currently be found streaming in Canada on Netflix, Paramount+ and Hollywood Suite at the time of publication, while One Battle After Another is of course now in theaters. Other works discussed in this episode include Barbarian, Insidious: The Red Door, Alien: Romulus, Rye Lane, Carlito's Way, Licorice Pizza, Sinners, Inherent Vice, The Big Lebowski, 28 Days Later, Night of the Living Dead, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, and of course, as always, LOST. We'll be back in two weeks time with another Halloween-themed horror selection, but what this is we don't yet know, so keep your eyes peeled to our social accounts on Instagram and BlueSky to find out! Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Get ready to reside in pure evil as Dan and Sarah kick off Season 12 of Shoot the Hostage with a deep dive into the 2002 action horror film, Resident Evil! After our last season got us all hooked on movies about drugs, we're booting up a brand new theme: video game movies! And who better to start with than the master of computer game adaptations, director Paul W.S. Anderson? Join us as we explore the cult classic that spawned a franchise (and a very specific type of career for its director). We're talking Milla Jovovich's transformation into an action icon, her real-life romance with Anderson, and the shocking revelation that her role as Alice was nearly a damsel in distress! We also discuss the memorable contributions of Michelle Rodriguez as Rain, and the unforgettable, meat-cubed moment starring Colin Salmon. Brace yourselves for our unfiltered thoughts on the film's dated CGI, its "edgy" Marilyn Manson-infused soundtrack, and the curious case of the always-convenient amnesia trope. We unpack why George A. Romero's original script was deemed too violent, and how the movie makes some surprising Alice in Wonderland connections. Is it a faithful movie adaptation? Is it even a good film? And is it truly a zombie movie, or just a reanimated corpse of a good idea? Here's what to expect from this Resident Evil deep dive: How Resident Evil (2002) kicks off our new season of video game movie adaptations Dan's long history with PlayStation and Sarah's gaming preferences The career of director Paul W.S. Anderson and his frequent collaborator Milla Jovovich Why George A. Romero's original Resident Evil script was deemed "too violent" for Hollywood Our thoughts on the infamous laser hallway scene and Colin Salmon's cubed fate. Why the film's "edgy" soundtrack, co-composed by Marilyn Manson, might give you a headache. A debate on if Resident Evil truly counts as a zombie movie and where it ranks amongst them. Insights into why computer game adaptations are notoriously difficult to get right, and how this film stacks up. Would you like to see the full lineup for season 12? The star of “Nobody 2”, Bob Oedenkirk, typically plays sleazy, cowardly, funny characters, like in “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” However, in the “Nobody” movies, he gets to stretch his acting chops by playing an unassuming, middle-aged, ass-kicking secret agent, named Hutch Mansell, balancing life with a wife and two kids. English novelist Daisy Hildyard envisions the deep time evolution of the coastline of Scarborough, North Yorkshire: from a prehistoric meteor strike, to a 19th-century seaside aquarium devoid of fish, a present-day spate of dead tides, and a future where part of the human population has evolved into a hybrid marine species, drawn back to the cradle of the sea to care for its degraded waters. Vividly narrated by acclaimed British actor Colin Salmon, and created as part of Wild Eye—an art and nature trail in Yorkshire that raises awareness about coastal erosion in the face of climate change—this short story traces the forever-shifting tides of our relationship with the sea.  Read the story. There's also a new Alien movie, Alien: Romulus, in theaters right now.Directed by schlockmeister Paul WS Anderson, AVP: Alien vs Predator pits the two intergalactic entities against each other in an Antarctic pyramid discovered by Weyland Industries. The group explores the pyramid but soon finds themselves caught between the Xenomorphs and the Predators, with the pyramid being a training ground for young Predator warriors to prove themselves or die in a rite of passage. Zach and Chris discuss how there was over a decade of hype for this battle from the comics and games, the lack of any interesting kills thanks to the PG-13 rating, how the Antarctic environment doesn't affect anything, how quickly most of the Predators die, and more. You can watch AVP: Alien vs Predator on Hulu. Twenty thousand years into the future, an exploration of Earth uncovers the final notes and unfinished stories left by the last human beings in the twilight of their civilization. Reflecting on humanity's genius for extraction and domination, this uncanny tale, narrated by acclaimed British actor Colin Salmon, follows our trajectory into extinction and invites the question: When will we truly comprehend the future we have seeded? The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories. Resident Evil is a 2002 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1997. Several writers and filmmakers, such as Alan B. McElroy, George A. Romero and Jamie Blanks, were initially hired to direct and write the film, but their scripts were rejected. In 2000, Anderson was announced as writer and director. Developed as a prequel set in the same continuity as the video game series, the film was initially titled Resident Evil: Ground Zero, but was retitled after the September 11 attacks. Cast was announced in early 2001 and principal photography commenced in March 2001 in Berlin. Resident Evil was theatrically released in Germany on March 12, 2002, by Constantin Film Verleih, and in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2002, by Screen Gems and Pathé Distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $103 million worldwide against a production budget of $33 million. It was followed by five sequels establishing their own alternate continuity: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

Jackie Byers and Christian Navarro are stepping out of their comfort zone in their latest horror movie, Prey for The Devil, which already has horror fans talking. Byers (Sister Ann) has to deal with archaic values from the church as she faces her demons, while Navarro (Father Dante) helps guide her along but soon finds himself in trouble. Byers said she had so much fun filming the movie and working with the special effects, adding that while it adds an element for an actor to stretch their skill set, it is also incredibly hard and awkward. Meanwhile, Navarro said that he enjoyed everything about Father Dante, including his good nature, always putting others before himself. Navarro also paid homage to 13 Reasons Why saying that, that show taught him so much about acting, and this movie further is something he is also really proud of. Jones, p.g.a., Earl Richey Jones, p.g.a., Jessica Malanaphy, p.g.a. In response to a global rise in demonic possessions, the Catholic Church reopens exorcism schools to train priests in the Rite of Exorcism. On this spiritual battlefield, an unlikely warrior rises: a young nun, Sister Ann (Jacqueline Byers). Although nuns are forbidden to perform exorcisms, a professor (Colin Salmon) recognizes Sister Ann's gifts and agrees to train her. Thrust onto the spiritual frontline with fellow student Father Dante (Christian Navarro), Sister Ann finds herself in a battle for the soul of a young girl (who Sister Ann believes is possessed by the same demon that tormented her own mother years ago), and soon realizes the Devil has her right where he wants her….and it wants in. #AnyaLahiri #Barrysbootcamp #barrys On this week's show we have one of Britain's top fitness instructors Anya Lahiri.  You only have to open a glossy magazine to find Lahiri listed as one of most sort after, elite fitness instructors in the UK today and during lockdown thousands of people tuned in worldwide to take her instagram live classes.  Lahiri was also instrumental in bringing high-intensity, fitness studio phenomenon Barry's Bootcamp to the UK.  With its latest studio about to open in Liverpool it is difficult to imagine the leap of faith it took on Lahiri's part to bring Barry's to the UK after taking a class in LA and even harder to imagine that there was ever time when a landlord might have been hesitant to rent them a space to create studio.  We caught up with Lahiri to talk about life in general, Barry's, her acting  career and the time she represented Britain at Eurovision as part of the girl group Precious.   As a little side note for her wikipedia page, not many people know that Lahiri also turned in a very funny performance as a senior centre's fitness instructor in the second half of the comedy film Great in Britain: The Movie.  She gives a great comedic performance in movie that also stars the late, great Peter Bowles, Jason Flemyng,  Ted Lasso's Hannah Waddingham, Colin Salmon, Ben Starr and a cast of great British talent.  https://greatinbritainmovie.com/
