Trick 'r Treat is a 2007 American anthology horror comedy film written and directed by Michael Dougherty and produced by Bryan Singer. The film stars Dylan Baker, Rochelle Aytes, Anna Paquin and Brian Cox. It relates four Halloween horror stories with a common element in them: Sam, a trick-or-treating demon wearing orange footie pajamas with a burlap sack over his head. The character makes an appearance in each of the stories whenever one of the other characters breaks a Halloween tradition. Despite being delayed for two years and having only a limited number of screenings at film festivals, the film received much critical acclaim and has since garnered a strong cult following. Tales of Halloween is a 2015 American comedy horror anthology film consisting of ten interlocking segments, each revolving around the titular holiday. Segments were directed by Neil Marshall, Darren Lynn Bousman, Axelle Carolyn, Lucky McKee, Andrew Kasch, Paul Solet, John Skipp, Adam Gierasch, Jace Anderson, Mike Mendez, Ryan Schifrin, Dave Parker and, in his film debut, Jack Dylan Grazer. The film premiered on July 24, 2015, at the Fantasia International Film Festival, before receiving a limited theatrical release and through video on demand on October 16, 2015, by Epic Pictures. MONSTER PARTY TRICKS YOU INTO TREATING YOURSELF! JAMES GONIS, SHAWN SHERIDAN, LARRY STROTHE, and MATT WEINHOLD, don their audio costumes and virtually visit your homes to inflict excitement, consternation, and mayhem! It's the time of year for our favorite holiday, and that's why we're throwing... THE MONSTER PARTY HALLOWEEN HOOTENANNY! Join for this shivering shindig, as we sort through the mixed bag of elements that contribute to a truly memorable ALL HALLOW'S EVE. That includes crappy vintage costumes (Ben Cooper, what you were thinking?), great and not so great candy, alternative "treats," dangerous interactive mazes (tasers anyone?), essential Halloween films, scary decorations (do we really need to decorate the outside of our homes?), and more! Of course, all of this is served with the usual dollop of MONSTER PARTY bickering. Making the scene for this fiesty festival of frights, is a return guest who is no stranger to Halloween hyjinks. He's an acclaimed filmmaker who has lent his talents to such chilling classics as THE GRAVEDANCERS, BIG ASS SPIDER, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and the upcoming, SATANIC HISPANICS! Please welcome back our good friend and fellow monster kid... MIKE MENDEZ! TRICK OR TREAT, SMELL OUR FEET, GIVE US SOMETHING GOOD TO EAT! Or, we'll keep our shoes on and you can send us a gift card.
Filmmakers Mike Mendez (TALES OF HALLOWEEN, BIG ASS SPIDER) and Alejandro Brugués (JUAN OF THE DEAD, NIGHTMARE CINEMA) return to the podcast to discuss the making of their new anthology film SATANIC HISPANICS. From the genesis of the idea for a horror anthology based in Hispanic heritage… to applying the lessons they learned from working on previous anthologies… to the tonal shifts between stories that make for a well rounded viewing experience and the amount of trust and creative control that needs to be given to the other filmmakers on the project… Mike and Alejandro go through the process of bringing their idea to the big screen. Also, Mike shares his joy in being recognized as the “corpse f**ker” from CHILLERAMA, Alejandro thinks Adam's rabbits look delicious, and Joe finds out how the production went on a project that he didn't land. With double guests comes a double shot of“Hollywood Therapy!” Dr. Arwen advises a listener who is looking to properly obtain exhibition rights for their film club's programming and then leads the group through an extremely touching grief counseling session focused on enjoying life guilt-free after enduring a crushing loss. It's a roller coaster of a conversation as four friends share big laughs and deeply personal life experiences.

On this episode of the Video Junkyard Podcast, Erik, Ryan, and Joe review "The Convent" (dir. Mike Mendez, starring Adrienne Barbeau, Joanna Canton, Richard Trapp, Dax Miller) - a horror comedy from 2000 about a group of college students who break into a supposedly haunted convent where demons begin possessing everyone. Yep. That ole' chestnut. Clearly inspired by Evil Dead 2, Demons, and Night of the Demons, this one definitely has intentional laughs as well as schlocky gore. But is this a horror/comedy? A horror so bad that it's a comedy? Or something in between? Check out the film on TubiTV and PlutoTV (for free) then join us for the conversation on the Video Junkyard Podcast!

If one were to describe Mike Mendez's 2000 cult classic in a single sentence, it might be this: The Convent is a film that arrived either 20 years too late or 10 years too early. Steeped in video nasties of the '70s and '80s, Mendez's film offers an early glimpse of the VHS nostalgia that would soon dominate the horror genre. And in this episode of Certified Forgotten, Monagle and Donato are joined by Screamcast co-host Stephanie Crawford to talk about the film and its enduring appeal to horror fans.

On this episode of Gore With a Pour, Sarah and Jessy chug their way through ridiculous youth conversations and pranks while contemplating exactly where this movie went wrong. Demons, virgins, devil worship....a not so perfect set up to discuss religious ideology in Mike Mendez's 2000 film, "The Convent." Grab a bottle of red wine and drink for the Body of Christ. With a 2.5 out of 5 pours, at least it will be entertaining. Support the show (http://cash.app/$jregal07)
In 1996, Mike Mendez (Lavalantula, The Gravedancers) released a strange, twisted movie that would go on to be lost to time. To this day, the only way to get a physical copy of the 1996 masterpiece, Killers, is on VHS. However, it was restored back in 2019 in preparation for a blu ray that, unfortunately, has yet to materialize. Trev Allen, from The Struggling Artist podcast (https://www.buzzsprout.com/808883), joins me as we try to make sense of this sheer madness. Movie Meltdown - Episode 521 The geek activities check-in continues as we virtually visit with Sam Drog and see what he's been up to and what he's been watching in these unusual times. And as we realize most of what we say qualifies as a headline for Weekly World News, we also mention… The Black Hole, Train to Busan, The Lost Boys, The Girl with All the Gifts, Goonies Kool-Aid, Scandalous: The Untold Story of the National Enquirer, Crank, bubble gum, Waking Sleeping Beauty, Joel Schumacher, Titan A.E., Minecraft, Bo Welch, Late Phases, the same obsession, Jim Mickle, this requiem for disaster that's going on throughout the entire movie, the unspoken demon that haunts every project, young Tim Burton, over-hyperly art directed, organic in the storytelling, name your parasites, they don't make people like that in kid movies anymore, baroque, punk, biological possession, some families hold together… because they never see each other, it doesn’t all have to be Russian novels, Lance Guest, tabloid journalism, it’s kind of like overdosing on morphine, Mike Mendez, being a social pariah, Kids Beat, that moody John Barry music, revisiting how big the thing blew up and how gross the kills were, if there was just some way... that we could monetize all that crap in your head, the TV weatherman looking like a philosopher, The Abandoned, style-shading animation, the national historical plaque… for Freejack, I can just do some cardio and eat all day, wade into the cesspool, John Carpenter, the unstoppable tides of life, we’re freakin’ out the straits, Lego, I am so invested… in this rat person movie, a rogue named Don Bluth, there was a signal… underneath the signal, Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, Best Week Ever and someone did politely save my life. Spoiler Alert: Some generally referenced spoilery plot points in Train to Busan and The Girl with All the Gifts… but it’s things you probably already could tell were going to happen anyway. “Movies are a maddening rabbit hole, and you will never escape their grasp.”

Thanksgiving is over and it's time for holiday panic. If you are like me, it's time for planning trips, buying gifts, wrapping gifts, wondering how you're going to pay for it all, realizing you can't, and finally throwing up your hands and deciding to get the crew back together for one last heist! We have two awesome interviews this month. One of them, I'm not going to lie, is a holdover from last month. So, we have, for your post-Halloween, post Thanksgiving, pre-Christmas holiday enjoyment -- Mike Mendez! The director of Big Ass Spider, The Convent and Don't Kill It, as well as being a writer on Season three of Stan Against Evil. And with Mike we have Axelle Carolyn, a film director, a writer on Sabrina and author of the new book, The Girls' Guide To Ghost Movies. We also have a very special guest. Tom Wright, who not only is a legendary TV director having shot episodes of the X-Files and Supernatural, he got into directing through story board and graphic design, having worked for Alfred Hitchcock among others, and is the man, the one man, who painted all those paintings that you see on The Night Gallery. And he is here today. http://DanaGould.com

The Damn Dirty Geeks take another stab and celebrating and studying the horror film genre with our special guest, producer/director Mike Mendez. Like two of our previous podcast guests, Andrew Kasch and John Skipp, Mendez also directed a segment of the horror anthology film TALES OF HALLOWEEN released last October. Mike's segment "Friday the 31st" pits a deranged serial killer against his feminine quarry who turns the tables in a shocking twist of the typical slasher formula. Mendez also discusses BIG ASS SPIDER!, his affectionate horror/humor tribute to the big bug movies of the 1950s. We revisit films like CARRIE and THE HILLS HAVE EYES that were early influences on Mike's youth and inspired his eventual career, including a rousing discussion of James Cameron's genre-mashing sequel ALIENS. We weave all these subject threads together in a larger examination on the state of current independent horror films and filmmakers, existing and thriving outside the formulaic entries of higher-budget studio franchises or even compete against them at the box office. Be sure to share Damn Dirty Geeks episodes with your horror-loving friends on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and show your support of DDG by writing a review of our show on iTunes.
