Many people believe that improving lifestyle means you won't need to take medication and conversely many people think that if you take medication, you don't need to change your lifestyle. This is part of the “this or that” thinking. It's very rigid and can be a judgemental way of viewing things. There are influencers out there who blame people if they take medications suggesting that if they just improved their lifestyle, they wouldn't need pills and potions. By the same token, there are plenty of doctors who quickly reach for the script pad when lifestyle changes could indeed negate the need for drugs. In today's episode Dr Mary and Dr Lucy discuss this phenomenon, why it occurs and why they believe it's not this or that but this and that. Dr. Lucy Burns is a general practice and lifestyle medicine physician based in Australia, who helps women in midlife rebalance their mind and body through low carb, real food programs. At her clinic, through her online business Real Life Medicine, and on her Real Health and Weight Loss Podcast, she helps women unlearn toxic diet culture and tap into science that promotes long-lasting health and permanent weight loss.By mid-life, most women (and many men, too) have gone through numerous diet cycles and many have serious medical issues that can be affected by nutrition levels. Dr. Lucy explains that the body works like a fire with a woodshed beside it. As long as the body is receiving good nutrition, it burns what it needs immediately and stores the remainder (the "logs"), to be drawn out when required. But different dietary habits result in an increase in storage and difficulty in extracting the "logs" when needed, resulting in the need to eat more, even though there is ample energy available in the body already.By correcting the eating patterns, through proper education and practice, the situation can be ameliorated and some medical conditions can be reduced or eliminated. The main goal of Dr. Lucy's programs and teachings is to help people with stress management, mindset management and mind/body balance.Dr. Lucy focuses on a low carbohydrate, real food lifestyle and advocates for learning how to read your body's signals. Please visit her website to find out more about her programs and how they might help you:https://www.rlmedicine.comResources for listeners: https://www.rlmedicine.com/freePodcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/real-health-and-weight-loss-podcast/id1539858012
In this informative episode, Dr Lucy and Dr Mary explore the fascinating world of mindset and its impact on weight loss and overall health. Dr Mary shares valuable insights into the importance of examining the stories our brains tell us, and understanding where these stories come from so we can work towards overcoming limiting, and untrue, beliefs. Hear how the unhelpful thoughts triggered by the words “no sugar” have led to the rebranding of the doctors' 7 day program, No Sugar Challenge, to the Low Carb Real Food Challenge, and how the name change more accurately reflects Real Life Medicine's philosophy of abundance and choice, rather than a restrictive, deprivation based approach to weight loss. This episode is a great listen for anyone wanting to learn why mindset is not discipline, how to create and cultivate confidence (tip: it is not from drinking a magical elixir), how to become an overnight success in 10 years' time...and much more! Is your liver sick? Up to 30% of Australian adults have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Many people with this illness do know that they have fatty liver. Although non-alcoholic fatty liver disease can have dire consequences to our health, it can also be easily improved with the right dietary advice. Medical doctors, Dr Lucy and Dr Mary, show you how to love your liver back to health with a low-carbohydrate lifestyle. REAL LIFE MEDICINE: https://www.rlmedicine.com/ REFERENCES Studies have shown that there can be a significant and rapid reduction in the fat within the liver even after one day of a low carbohydrate lifestyle. It has also been demonstrated that low carbohydrate lifestyle is superior to a low-fat lifestyle for reducing the fat within the liver.
