Real Talk: How to Have Honest Money Conversations

Money talk: it triggers people and stirs up conversations. That's because it really is important—it offers choices and freedom, letting us create lives and businesses that align with our individual paths. However, have you noticed the often toxic rhetoric around it, especially from some so-called gurus claiming that if you're not a millionaire, you're not working hard enough? Or if you just do this ‘one thing', you'll make six figures overnight? Before you know it, you're questioning your own achievements and feeling as if you've somehow fallen behind. Can we pause right there? Today, I want to break down what it means to truly talk about money in a way that's impactful, genuine and free from shame:1. Transparency Over Hype: instead of talking about the money goals we achieved, let's start discussing how we got there, whether through consistent growth, stellar projects, or trial and error.2. Meeting People Where They Are: Decide what success looks like for you, rather than hinging it on hitting specific income numbers.3. Focusing on Sustainable Success: Start by setting realistic, clear goals that stretch across short, medium and long-term timelines, rather than focusing on generating quick cash. Here's a challenge for you: reframe your money mindset by asking yourself some honest questions: Are you measuring success against someone else's wealth? Do you feel undue pressure to hit certain financial milestones? Are your financial discussions empowering, or do they leave you feeling less than?If today's topic resonated with you, I'd love to hear from you. Drop me a DM on Instagram at @emmarmcqueen and share your money mindset shift. Let's continue this dialogue in a way that feels good, safe, challenging and sustainable.Emma McQueen:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

The Anti-Retirement Movement: How Female Entrepreneurs Are Redefining Success After 50

Are you setting yourself up for retirement? Do you even want to retire? In just two years, I'll be 50, the age I always imagined I'd retire. Eight years ago, when I started my business, my goal was to pay off the mortgage and retire. When I first mentioned my retirement plans to my husband, he chuckled and said, "I cannot imagine you not working." And honestly, I couldn't either! The idea of retirement used to be synonymous with rest, relaxation, and a reward for years of hard work. But as I contemplate stepping back, I realise that the traditional notion of retirement has evolved so much since my grandparents, or even my parents generation.A few generations ago, retirement was a clearly defined phase. My parents' and grandparents' retirements were linear, moving seamlessly from career to comfortable leisure. But, nowadays, is it even a thing to fully retire? The world looks different now. People stay healthier longer, careers are more fulfilling, and the drive to contribute doesn't simply stop at an arbitrary age.The dynamic has shifted; with many of us living longer, we have to rethink how we spend this extended period of life. Back when I was in corporate, I managed my finances with an iron grip, always thinking ahead. But starting my own business put finances—and retirement—into a new perspective. My accountant once doubted my initial business ambitions, but reaching financial milestones faster than expected taught me to challenge the status quo and dream bigger.00:00 Retirement Goals00:47 Challenges of Running a Business01:51 Financial Planning and Superannuation04:09 The Reality of Retirement05:26 Balancing Work and Family06:48 Rethinking Retirement and Future Plans09:34 Final Thoughts and EncouragementEmma McQueen:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

Ever stared at your screen, heart sinking, because your latest social media post flopped? Or maybe business has been slow, and that little voice inside is starting to whisper, 'You're just not cut out for this.' I've been there many times as an entrepreneur and I've learned how to bring myself, and my clients out of these negative thought loops. As entrepreneurs, we pour our hearts into our businesses. When things don't go as planned—clients backing out, low engagement, tough feedback—it's easy to slip into a loop of negative thoughts. Often, we focus on one piece of negative feedback, ignoring the twenty positive ones. Once we fall into that loop, it becomes incredibly challenging to climb out. But it's important to remember that negative thoughts aren't inherently bad. They serve a purpose by alerting us to areas that need attention and inspiring us to improve. When you catch yourself spiralling, consider which of these strategies might work for you. Whether it's pausing to name your thoughts, reframing negative narratives, taking action, leaning on your community, or celebrating your wins, remember that change begins with commitment. And if you've already found effective ways to shift your mindset, I'd love to hear about them. Non-negotiables for running a successful business

Running a successful business isn't just about dreaming big or making bold moves. It's about nailing the non-negotiables—the habits, boundaries, and principles that keep you focused, profitable, and thriving. Without these foundational anchors, it's way too easy to get lost in the chaos of business and lose sight of what really matters. Let me ask you this: What are the non-negotiables that make a difference in your business? At Emma McQueen Pty Ltd, we have three core values which everything in the business stems from: Generosity, Kindness and Results. Based on these values, I've developed some practical, actionable ways to implement my non-negotiables and I'm so happy to share them with you as well. 1. Focus on Customer ServiceSetting a response time for enquiriesCreating a customer service script for standardising responses to common enquiries. Surprise and delight your customers. A simple handwritten note or a small gift can work wonders in making clients feel valued. Using a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tool to help track client interactions and preferences, ensuring a top-notch service at every touchpoint.2. Money Management ToolsI cannot emphasise enough the importance of managing your finances effectively. It's vital to separate your business and personal finances. It's equally important to manage your finances with appropriate tools, such as Xero or QuickBooks rather than a simple spreadsheets. You're running a business, not a hobby! 3. Effective Follow-Up SystemThe fortune is in the follow-up so make sure you have a structured follow-up system in place. The “3-2-1 Rule” I follow—engaging with three people, nurturing two leads, and closing one deal each week—fits seamlessly into my business development routine.Additionally, tracking leads and conversions through a CRM or even a simple spreadsheet can provide a goldmine of data, helping to strengthen your client relationships and improve conversion rates. What non-negotiables have you established in your business and which areas do you think you need to elevate? I know it sounds daunting, but I used habit-stacking to incorporate it into my regular routine. I set out my activewear each night and then would start my day at 5AM. I woke up by going on a walk with a husband and then took my dog on one too! By 6.40AM, before most people are even awake, I'd already achieved 13,000 steps of my goal.A New Diet: While walking did wonders for me, it's not enough on its own. 80% of weight loss success comes from nutrition, which is why I joined Weight Loss Coaching Works, a program focusing on real food, accountability, and community support. With their help, I was able to lose double my original goal (17 kilos over 26 weeks) without resorting to drastic measures or drinking my meals.Throughout this whole journey, my discipline has been my strongest weapon. I've continuously learnt that if you set your mind to it, even the hardest challenges can be overcome. Now it's your turn! What are you willing to commit to for yourself? Ready to Quit? Ask yourself these questions first

Post-holiday blues are a thing. At this time of year, many business owners dream of closing up shop, quitting their business and moving on to something else.If you've found yourself on job boards or LinkedIn, searching for an easier path, you're not alone. Business is tough, it can be relentless, and sometimes it feels like we're just not cut out for it.But before you throw in the towel, there are three questions I want you to ask yourself:#1:  What are the main reasons driving my desire to quit? What's driving your desire to quit? Are these feelings arising from something temporary, like post-holiday blues, or is there a deeper issue within your business? It could be staff or system challenges, external pressures, or even internal expectations. Sometimes quitting seems more simple than facing the problem head on. #2: Have I exhausted all options to resolve the current challenge?  Have you sought support, looked for resources, or experimented with changes that could improve the situation? Sometimes, the answer lies in unexplored options or collaborations with new people. #3: What are the long term implications of quitting for me personally and professionally?Quitting might bring relief but it could also close doors to valuable lessons and growth opportunities. Picture your life post-business – does it make you feel elated? Or does it sadden you?   You need to consider how quitting may impact your career trajectory, financial stability, and, importantly, your emotional well-being.Bringing Back the JoyI think that bringing joy back in  as a self care option may make a significant difference to your outlook, to your mindset, and to your business. Life is too short to be working in a job or business that you don't love. But before you move onto the next thing, I really encourage you to take some time pondering these questions. When I first started my business, my initial vision was to enjoy every school holiday with the family. So every school holidays, I cleared my calendar completely. Although this sounds great in theory, the reality was quite different. While it worked wonders for my family, it left me feeling exhausted having to work twice as hard after the holidays. Avoiding work entirely during the holidays just wasn't feasible for me so we had to find a different solution. Now, I clear the first week of every school holiday for quality family time. During this week, I don't do any work and we lap up the fun.During the second week, I keep my schedule light, still making time for my daughter but also spending a few hours each day on business tasks. The beauty of running your own business is that it's possible to take your laptop down to the beach and enjoy the best of both worlds.Juggling business and family is undeniably challenging, but with thoughtful planning and a flexible mindset, it can be exceptionally rewarding. And then there's YouTube, with 21 hours, and Facebook, with another 20 hours. It's mind-boggling how much time we spend being 'social' but the truth is, many of us feel lonelier than ever.Beyond Blue defines social anxiety as feeling intensely anxious about social interactions or performing in front of others. For many of my clients it manifests physically with excessive sweating, trembling, or nausea. It's real, and it's scary but you aren't alone. Approximately 11% of Australians experience social anxiety during their lifetime, with 7% affected in any given 12-month period. Now, as business owners, networking and interacting with clients is crucial. It's part of building success, right? So, in this episode I'm sharing some practical tips on how to navigate social interactions without feeling overwhelmed. Some people want to spend less time with you, and some people want you to just get the job done for them. Anxiety can pop up when you least expect it.As an entrepreneur, this can impact your life and business in surprising ways. Even if you don't suffer from anxiety, generally speaking, business owners worry a lot! We worry about the future, our cash flow, our revenue, whether we have enough clients... the worry can be relentless. For those who live with anxiety on top of that, it's a lot to deal with. But there are ways you can manage so that anxiety doesn't run your life. Through coaching my clients and speaking with other business owners, I've observed common areas where anxiety tends to creep in: Social AnxietyI've noticed a significant uptick in social anxiety, especially since COVID-19. Working from home has its perks, but it also makes venturing out feel daunting. To combat this, it's all about taking small steps. Financial AnxietyWe worry about cash flow, revenue, and profitability. Seeing businesses around us close can be heartbreaking and stress-inducing. I've learned to disengage from doom-scrolling and negative news cycles. Instead, I focus on strategies that help maintain a positive mindset. Generalised AnxietyGeneralised anxiety can be crippling, especially when compounded with the pressures of running a business. I had a client who woke up every day anxious about her business. So, she threw that business out, started again with a blank sheet of paper, only doing the things that she really wanted to do. Anxiety is a real and rising issue, particularly among small business owners. If you feel like you need some support to help you manage anxiety, there are some amazing professionals out there. I never would have called myself gritty. But after looking up the definition of ‘grit' recently, I now think I can say I have it in spades!Sometimes it's only in hindsight that we connect the dots and discover something about ourselves we didn't know was there.I experienced this when I read the Oxford Dictionary's definition of grit: ‘courage and resolve; strength of character'. As I look back on the significant experiences of my youth, I now appreciate them as my journey to building grit and resilience. It also gives me insight into why I do the work I do, and what led me to being so passionate about it. So what does being a gritty human look like as we work towards achieving all those goals we have for our business? Today we're exploring what it means to be gritty in business; that perseverance to chase our goals and remain focused despite the inevitable challenges. One of the crucial factors in maintaining grit is the ability to delay gratification, and we'll dive into the importance of taking small, compounding steps that have a bigger impact on our long-term success. I encourage you to reflect on recent challenges and reframe them as opportunities for growth. Do you feel safe to walk around your neighbourhood in the dark?I don't. And I have a feeling it's not just me.It's ridonkulous that in this day and age, a woman doesn't feel safe to go for a walk on her own! It's a very real problem - I wish I had an answer, but I don't. So the least I can do is share my personal experience to shed some light on the issue. At the start of the year, I set a goal to up my steps to 20,000 steps a day. That's a lot of steps! To make that happen, it meant waking up at 5 am. Do you know how dark it is at 5 am?! It's dark. And I don't feel safe. One afternoon, my friend Mary was in town for a short visit and we decided to take a stroll along the Yarra River. It was around five in the afternoon, and everything was lovely until we witnessed two gangs of teens going really hard at each other. I was paralysed with fear. I wanted to help but fortunately, Mary pulled me away. It was clear that these kids were high on drugs, and any attempt to intervene would have ended badly, especially considering I'm only five foot two!So, I had to think hard about how I was going to feel safe while on my 5 am walks. If you're feeling unsettled like I am, maybe these ideas will help you too.I went out and bought a bright yellow rain jacket. You can't miss me!I walk with my dog—a 15-year-old Maltese who, let's be honest, wouldn't scare anyone off, but his presence is comforting. I bought myself a big torch - a really heavy one. Even though I don't think I'd have the guts to bop someone on the head with it, it gives me a little comfort.I also bought a personal alarm that I carry with me. After about four weeks of solo early morning walks, my husband, Mark asked to come with me. Seeing how dark it was at 5 am, he asked me if I felt safe and of course, I said “No!” So now he comes with me every day and that makes me feel very safe. He's an amazing husband. But not everyone has a partner to go with them. This is a very real problem, and I wish I had a clear solution. I'm increasingly curious about what other women are doing to feel safe. If you're experiencing similar feelings of unease, please know you're not alone. At the end of the day, I'm not going to let fear get in the way of me getting out and doing what I need to do. She is surrounded by a community of like-minded women and is open to learning and growing. She cheers others on and understands that life works in seasons. The Birth of Thriving WomenI started Thriving Women because I wanted a group of women - like me - to connect, coach, and build a community with. When I began my business, I found it lonely, especially now that many of us are working from home. Interaction with others, especially like-minded women, is essential. More heads are better than one—for creative idea-making, problem-solving, cheerleading, and even giving a good butt-kicking when needed. There is an extraordinary power in community. How to build a great programStack it with more value: If you're not convinced of your offer or service, stack it with more value. Do your market research: Before launching any program, you need to understand your audience and know that they're going to buy what you have to offer. Evolve and adapt: Thriving Women has undergone several iterations over the years. Year one was a basic version and we built it out from there. The Magic of CommunityWe've seen the women in our community achieve some remarkable results - business growth skyrocketing, publishing books, going from a one woman business to managing a team of 12 people. But the one thing everyone keeps coming back for is the community. So, whether you're part of the Thriving Women network or another community out there, I encourage you to keep investing into the people around you. How I price my service offerings

Did you know that 92 per cent of women in business make less than $100K a year in revenue? A large part of this is simply due to not knowing how to price their service offers properly. I want to see more women making more money—not just for the sake of it, but because it leads to more choice and freedom in your business and life. First things first, I want us to stop charging an hourly rate. Charging by the hour can cap your earnings and make it difficult to scale your business. Let's say you want to make $100K a year, work 40 weeks out of the year, and work for 30 hours each week. Your initial calculation might lead you to believe you need to charge $84 an hour. But remember, you won't be billing all 30 hours. Between marketing, social media, bookkeeping, and other tasks, you'll likely only be billing 20 hours each week. So let's revise that to an hourly rate of $125.Even though we don't want to charge by the hour, understanding this helps us see the value we need to attach to our time and services.Introducing Tiered Pricing ModelsNow, let's talk about a tiered pricing model. This involves offering multiple levels of your service, each at a different price point. Money psychology teaches us that if a person is presented with three options, most people will pick the middle option. Your tiers could look something like this:- Basic: $100 per month- Standard: $200 per month- Premium: $400 per monthYou can offer different sets of features or benefits for each tier. For example, your basic tier could offer essential services, the standard tier offers more comprehensive services, and the premium tier provides the complete package for those willing to pay extra. This way, you attract a broader range of clients and maximise your revenue without significantly increasing your workload.Consider implementing a tiered pricing strategy in your business to give yourself more stability and focus on trying to achieve the MRR (monthly recurring revenue) number that will get you to the 100K per year goal. It can take some time to figure out the perfect tiers for your service, but the effort is well worth it. What it actually means to scale your business

Scaling a business is a buzzword we often hear in the entrepreneurial world. Yet, many of us don't fully understand what it means, how it differs from growing a business, or how to implement it effectively.I recently worked with one of my clients who wanted to scale her membership service, and I realised just how much there is to consider. So today I want to share my insight on what it actually means to scale and whether it's the right move for you.Let's start by breaking down the differences between scaling and growing. Even though these words are often used interchangeably, they don't mean the same thing.1. Resource Allocation: Growing involves a proportional increase in resources such as capital, workforce, or operational capacity. In scaling, the goal is to achieve more with less. This means a focus is on increasing revenue without significantly increasing resources.2. Efficiency: Growth tends to be less efficient due to its linear expansion of resources and costs. Scaling emphasises efficiency and sustainability, aiming to increase revenue while minimising costs.3. Strategy and Implementation: Growth strategies may include hiring more employees, opening new locations, or increasing production. Scaling requires strategic planning and innovation to handle increased demand without proportional cost increases. To make things clearer, let's look at some examples! A restaurant that opens new locations to serve more customers experiences growth. It doubles its revenue but also doubles its costs for rent, staff, and supplies. Meanwhile, a software company that automates customer support with AI can serve more customers without hiring additional staff. This is scaling because they've significantly increased revenue with minimal cost. There are several benefits to scaling your business, like an increased market demand, greater revenue potential, and a competitive advantage. However, scaling is not just about the upside; there are risks involved. If your business isn't ready you can overextend and expose it to unnecessary risks.Remember, scaling isn't for anyone. Like any decision in business, it's important to be well-informed before diving in. Whether you decide to scale or grow, I hope the information I've shared will help you make the best decision for your business.LINKS:Day with the QueenWebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

Why female entrepreneurs are scared to invest in their businesses

Are you scared to invest in your business?Seven years ago, I bootstrapped my business with my own savings, not taking out loans or relying on investors. It was just me, making things work under pretty tight conditions. When I started the business, I had one rule: don't spend money until you've made money. There were, however, two exceptions: one was a terrible website I made on my own and then quickly discarded (because it was atrocious), and the other was investing $26,000 per year into a business school. It felt like an enormous sum at the time, but I had faith that the work I would generate from being in that business school, would more than pay for the investment I was making. That decision turned out to be one of the best I ever made—I felt secure as I transitioned from my corporate role into my own business. Now, let me ask you: would you have taken that risk? I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences in the comments. Women are quick to invest in our children, beauty routines, and family holidays, but when it comes to our businesses, we often hesitate. In this episode, I break down why I think this is the case and some strategies to help you feel more comfortable investing in your business.Fear of investing in your business is understandable, but the potential rewards far outweigh the risks. Build a supportive network, seek mentorship, and continually educate yourself. Prioritise your wellbeing and finances smartly. With these strategies, you'll be well on your way to overcoming the fear that holds you back.I hope my tips have been helpful. Pick one and try it. Three Ways to Increase the Profit in your Business

Increasing profitability can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be.Today, I thought I'd share three ways to increase the profit of your business. Whether you're a seasoned entrepreneur or just starting out, these tips can help you maximise your revenue and improve your bottom line. 1. Dive Deep into Your NumbersThe first step to boosting your profitability is a thorough analysis of your numbers. It might sound really simple, or even silly but I see way too many women burying their heads in the sand because they lack confidence or financial literacy. 2. Increase Your PricesAnother simple often neglected strategy for increasing profit is to raise your prices. Women, in particular, tend to undervalue their services and hesitate to charge what they're worth. If inflation and business costs rise, so too should your prices. Regularly reviewing and adjusting your prices to reflect the market conditions and the value you provide is crucial.3. Create New Offers Introducing new, high-margin offers is another effective way to increase profit. This doesn't mean pushing out offers with no margin—instead, focus on those with good revenue and strong profit potential.LINKS:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

Make Your Offers Irresistible with Value-Based Pricing

One of the most common questions I get asked as a business coach is, "How do I price my services?" It causes stress and anxiety for many entrepreneurs so today I want to talk about value-based pricing and how value-stacking can make your offerings irresistible.Value-based pricing is a strategy where the price of a product or service is determined by the perceived value to the customer rather than the cost of production or historical prices. Adopting a value-based pricing strategy allows you to communicate the unique advantages and value-adds your product or service offers. This helps you stand out in the market and escape the price wars. How to Implement Value-Based Pricing1. Understand Your Client's Perceived Value: Dive into the minds of your customers. What problems does your offering solve for them? What benefits do they value the most? 2. Stack the Value: When customers feel they are getting substantial value, they are less likely to question the price. To achieve this, provide additional resources, access to tools, or exclusive content that complements the rest of the package and addresses your client's needs.Remember, the first sale you need to make is to yourself. If you're not thoroughly convinced about the value of your offer, it's time to reassess and add more value!LINKS:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/

“People just aren't buying right now”.It's a phrase I've heard many times over the last 6 months at least, and I understand how difficult it can be to make sales right now. With rising interest rates, a housing crisis, ads becoming more expensive and generally sluggish social media engagement, we know the market has changed. But to say that people aren't buying right now without looking at the bigger picture, I feel needs some further investigation. People are still spending money, and sales are still happening. Here are three things you can do to keep selling through challenging times:1. Get Creative and Stand OutDon't just offer the same old thing everyone else does. Think about what makes you unique and how you can deliver exceptional value.2. Your Energy Check InPeople are drawn to positive energy. Do an honest self-assessment. Are you bringing the enthusiasm you need to connect with potential customers?3. Be ProactiveNo more waiting for leads to fall into your lap. Be intentional about your business development efforts. Here are some key areas to focus on:Build Your List: Having an email list is crucial. It allows you to nurture leads and share your offers directly.Offer a Valuable Freebie: Incentivise people to sign up for your list with a freebie that solves a problem they have.Craft a Sales Process: Do you even have a sales process? Map it out to ensure you're consistently following the right steps to convert leads into customers. While the sales landscape may seem harder right now, remember that people are still spending money. By implementing these key strategies – getting creative with your offerings, radiating positive energy, and taking a proactive approach to sales – your business can thrive.LINKS:WebsiteFor a copy of Emma's book, 'Go-getter: Raise your mojo, shift your mindset and thrive' – https://www.emmamcqueen.com.au/book/
