Happy new year! I hope you finished off 2023 in style and what better way to kickoff 2024 than with a FABULOUS guest, the one, the only, the hilarious Bo Johnson! Joe caught some of Bo's stand-up online a few years ago, had the pleasure of seeing him live last year, and HAD to get him on the show to discuss his story. Bo and Joe get into a conversation on how Bo first got into comedy, how he prepares to tour around the country, and some advice for folks just starting out. It's the best way to start off your year, come detox with DTALKS! Enjoy! About Bo Johnson Bo Johnson is a comedian from Seattle, Washington. He can be found headlining clubs, breweries, and appropriately sized theaters across the United States and Canada. His stand up has been featured on Netflix is a Joke Radio, season two of Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City on Comedy Central, Don't Tell Comedy Secret Sets, & LOL Live! at the prestigious Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal. He was a finalist in the 39th annual Seattle International Comedy Competition and is a regular at festivals including Bumbershoot, SF Sketchfest, the Double Down Comedy Experience sponsored by Zappos, Life is Beautiful in Las Vegas, Rifflandia in Victoria BC, Prizefest, and Big Pine Comedy Festival in Phoenix. With a growing online audience Bo's jokes have been viewed millions of times online. Separate from stand up comedy one time Bo and his best friend from high school snuck into a movie theater as one person. That video was broadcast on TV shows like the now cancelled Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon on NBC and lowest rated daytime talk show at the time, The Meredith Veira Show. Bo still gets messages each year from friends seeing the video go viral on different meme accounts. Numerous magazines and newspapers also wrote about the hijinks, including an article in Cosmopolitan titled, “Man Sneaks His BFF Into Movie Theater by Stuffing Him Into His Pants.” More recently Bo trained his roommates dog by walking her to Shania Twain's "Man! I feel like a Woman!" in a viral stunt earning over 7 millions views on Tik Tok and press coverage in both major and incredibly minor publications.

Episode #45: Despite the music industry's economic downturn, more and more music festivals have popped up and many continue to thrive. Because of the booming demand for tickets, live performances have become a vital revenue stream for many artists. But have we hit “peak festival”? Mainstays like Coachella and Lollapalooza have become increasingly corporate, and independently-run festivals contend that competition for is a huge issue in planning their events. We talk to three indie festival organizers, Nick Blasko (Rifflandia), Bob Babisch (Summerfest) and Zale Schoenborn (Pickathon), about the fate of their business and alternative festival models.
This week on TransCanada Music West (Friday at 8pm MT), we bring you the live synth-pop sounds of Rococode, recorded live at Rifflandia! The duo is made up of Laura Smith and Andrew Braun, a pair of Vancouver-based musicians who met while attending jazz college. Laura made her start in music backing up some of the biggest indie acts in the Vancouver scene, including Said the Whale, Prairie Cat, Language Arts and Hannah Georgas. Andrew, who hails from Manitoba, was a backing player on Laura’s solo debut ‘Sea of Stars’ in 2008. It wasn’t long before the creative relationship evolved, and the duo collaborate on their 2012 debut Guns, Sex, and Glory, produced by Mother Mother front-man Ryan Guildemond. On this episode of TransCanada Music West, you’ll get a live preview of songs set for release next week on the band’s sophomore LP, Don’t Worry It Will Be Dark Soon. The live concert recording features Jason Cook on drums, Robbie Driscoll on bass, Laura Smith on keys and vocals, and Andrew Braun on guitar, keys and vocals. It has been quite some time since I last posted an interview. Although the posts have slowed down I have continued interviewing people on a regular basis. Of course this means I have numerous interviews backlogged. In fact so much so that some of the people I have interviewed have moved onto new roles at new companies since the time of the interview. Greg Van Bastelar is somebody I met at Rifflandia in Victoria while participating at a music industry panel. At the time Greg was marketing Director of Deezer Music Canada. After speaking with Greg I was immediately interested in interviewing him for the podcast. He has a lot of experience in the music industry ranging from working for FACTOR (The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recording) and seeing artists get funded for records to becoming the marketing director for the European streaming service Deezer Music. "Greg Van Bastelaar’s career began in 2001 by studying Recorded Music Production at The Trebas Institute Of Toronto. It was there that he met world-renowned Songwriter/Producer Justin Gray. A relationship was struck and his time at Big Boom Entertainment resulted in a phenomenal experience working directly in the creation of music. 2006 brought an exciting opportunity with Warner Music Canada, working directly under the General Manager of Warner Chappell Music Canada. During this time, Greg's knowledge of the industry grew considerably and a wealth of industry contacts were added to his network. Greg eventually jumped at the chance to work for The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR). This environment plugged him into the main-line of the Canadian music industry, allowing him to further develop key relationships as well as to directly help the industry thrive as a whole." Greg is a big sports fan as well as music fan. I have always been intrigued with the overlap in fan behaviour and their impact on performance in the music and sports world. Speaking with Greg gave me a chance to cover this topic and get his opinion on the subject. Enjoy! Aaron Bethune. Music Specialist. Creative Collaborator. Author. Rifflandia. Having just returned from a weekend of music overload we start this week's show by featuring some of our favourite artists from the festival, including some nice new discoveries. First off is Lynx whose album is currently on heavy rotation here at HSS HQ followed by the mighty Z-Trip off of his debut album. Chali2na reminds us of why he killed at the show with his vocals on DJ Format's We Know Something You Don't Know. After that a little Thievery Corporation and some new Orb to rbing us into the dubby territory. After the break we drop a new one from Ott that is uber hot and keep the bass tunes rolling with Opio and a Bluetech remix of Adham Shaikh. We close the show with one of the main highlights from the fest: EPROM. See you next year at Rifflandia! Tracklist: Lynx - Tricksters & Fools DJ Z-Trip - Something Different DJ Format - We Know Something You Don't Know Thievery Corporation - State of the Union The Orb - Making Love in Dub (Instrumental) Alpha & Omega - Philosopher's Stone (The Disciples Stepping Up Remix) Ott - Mr Balloon Hands Opio - Lost Moinal Adham Shaikh - Carpet Breaker (Bluetech Remix) EPROM - Transparency Boards of Canada - Come To Dust

Before that, a couple of 9/11 birthdays were featured (Leo Kottke, Dave Bidini). Tonight's interviews: 1) Sue Malcolm of bluegrass band Highrise Lonesome. Their CD release is at the ANZA Club Sept. 23. 2) Melissa Bandura (aka Familiar Wild) also has a new CD, she will be at Rifflandia this weekend and various venues around BC in September. If you're still reading: it is also My Birthday.
