Keith delivers a curve ball and we veer into DJ Format's first studio album 'Music for the Mature B-Boy'. In the episode, we discuss our experiences dabbling in the genre all those years ago and how this has changed our perceptions of the music we listen to, and perhaps encouraged us to venture out of the comfort blanket of the rock/metal we listened to mostly, at the time. So grab yourself a plate of bacon, eggs and chips, smack your lips, and see if there's something you don't know.
This week our attention turns to record stores, record collecting, and the art of the come-up. Dave, Demone & Nate share a few digging stories, talk about the state of the record collecting game, and discuss the limits of sample snitching in hip-hop media. After that we have a lovely chat with consummate b-boy, gifted producer and recording artist DJ Format. We have been fans of Format's records and mixes for many years, so we are pleased to welcome him to the show to talk about his career, in particular his excellent recent release, the somewhat subdued and psych-influenced Devil's Workshop. DBRP was scooped out of the podcast dollar bin by the keen collectors at Stony Island Audio. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The latest in my podcast series, investigating the Current State of Music. DJ Format found fame in the earlier noughties and a DJ and producer, bringing out albums like "Music for the Mature B-Boy" bringing a fresh cut and paste approach not really heard from a UK producer. Introding Canadian Born rapper Abdominal, his beats and flow felt more like a West Coast American release. Supporting Jurassic 5 at Brixton opened the door for Formats style and gained him widespread coverage from Radio 1 and beyond. Fabric gave him the opportunity to release a DJ mix as part of their coveted Fabriclive series, bringing to the fore his impeccable DJing skills and bringing longevity to his career. Further albums as himself and with the Simonsound cemented his musicianship, from straight up hip hop, to jazz and beyond. Djing regularly around the world, putting together compilation albums, producing new music, Format never stops in his quest for sonic perfection. His latest project is putting out a release which he hopes can generate some funds for a friend with cancer, which you can find more out here: www.youcaring.com/gisellechamberlain-1054141

It's been a few months of being busy, traveling, etc., but the latest Live From Greenville Studios Podcast is finally out. On this episode we catch up with a grip of funky records in a variety of genres. We're going to keep the shows down to about an hour or so, perhaps a bit longer for some guests as we move forward, so this is a nice way to get closer the music. On this episode, we get a few tracks from newcomers F Spot Records out of Los Angeles, a great cover by The Gene Dudley Group, the hottest 45 out right now from DJ Format, some Manchester funk from Buffalo Brothers, a funk rarity that sees its first time on 45, dub from Paris, France, and a few solid offerings from Gary Burton, Ramsey Lewis, and John Kasandra among others. After finally realising that I've been a little bored talking to myself in the attic on each show all these years, I've decided to take things in another direction. So folks, from this point on I'll be hosting the show with my good buddy DJ Format. Together we'll be talking inane nonsense, teary eyed nostalgia, power nerd record facts and the odd interesting debate here and there. We plan nothing. Here's the first admittedly sketchy attempt live from Matt's secret cave.... Enjoy!
Barrister and Phil (@Mechaphil) talk Premier League and Liverpool and laugh about Vincent Tan and make jokes and then everything gets fucked with technology so our Manchester City-supporting special guest has to wait until next week. It's all a little bit of a mess, but that's typical at this point. Music courtesy of Matt and Kim, DJ Format, Audiomachine and Lauryn Hill.
2100HRS (UK) the Soup Sessions are back (now with just one show a month) and wow what a way to start 2014… And to introduce the session a few words from the man himself: “I collect all sorts of weird & wonderful music on my regular travels around Europe and beyond. I’m not always able to share these records with people because they wouldn’t go down too well at a typical DJ Format gig so it’s nice to have the opportunity to play some of my favourite vinyl discoveries including some psychedelic 60’s delights for the Soup Sessions!” So join us, David (the producer) and Jenny (the host) for this special night with DJ Format (the very special guest) Live from 9pm (UK)!!! x the Soup Sessions Live, now just one show a month on the last friday of every month, not to be missed, ever… x CONTACT THE SHOW DIRECT (E-MAIL) DJ FORMAT ON FACEBOOK “https://radio.novalujon.com/31-01-14-soup-sessions-with-dj-format/” From 31.01.14 Soup Sessions with DJ Format. We're lighting up the grill tonight. The days are long, the air is warm (when it's not raining) and the summer time vibe is in effect! For your BBQing soundtrack we start off with some feel-good hiphop courtesy of Steinski & Double Dee doing a Sugarhill megamix. Ozomatli keeps the smile on your face with the Cut Chemist suite - the grill is beginning to smoke. A few pinches of soul from DJ Format, 2econd Class Citizen and RJD2 for the beats marinading in the fridge. The coals are hot by the time Pepe Deluxe and Z-trip & Radar hit the grill with their searing beats and heavy distorted rock riffs. Juices are flowing off the steak after The Slew and Z-Trip's classic rock mashup cook us just right. Then the Beasties let us know it's time to eat as their heavy beats finish off the party. Dinner is served!
