Keith delivers a curve ball and we veer into DJ Format's first studio album 'Music for the Mature B-Boy'. In the episode, we discuss our experiences dabbling in the genre all those years ago and how this has changed our perceptions of the music we listen to, and perhaps encouraged us to venture out of the comfort blanket of the rock/metal we listened to mostly, at the time. This week our attention turns to record stores, record collecting, and the art of the come-up. Dave, Demone & Nate share a few digging stories, talk about the state of the record collecting game, and discuss the limits of sample snitching in hip-hop media. The latest in my podcast series, investigating the Current State of Music. DJ Format found fame in the earlier noughties and a DJ and producer, bringing out albums like "Music for the Mature B-Boy" bringing a fresh cut and paste approach not really heard from a UK producer. Introding Canadian Born rapper Abdominal, his beats and flow felt more like a West Coast American release. Supporting Jurassic 5 at Brixton opened the door for Formats style and gained him widespread coverage from Radio 1 and beyond. Fabric gave him the opportunity to release a DJ mix as part of their coveted Fabriclive series, bringing to the fore his impeccable DJing skills and bringing longevity to his career. Further albums as himself and with the Simonsound cemented his musicianship, from straight up hip hop, to jazz and beyond. Djing regularly around the world, putting together compilation albums, producing new music, Format never stops in his quest for sonic perfection. Rifflandia. Having just returned from a weekend of music overload we start this week's show by featuring some of our favourite artists from the festival, including some nice new discoveries. First off is Lynx whose album is currently on heavy rotation here at HSS HQ followed by the mighty Z-Trip off of his debut album. Chali2na reminds us of why he killed at the show with his vocals on DJ Format's We Know Something You Don't Know. After that a little Thievery Corporation and some new Orb to rbing us into the dubby territory. After the break we drop a new one from Ott that is uber hot and keep the bass tunes rolling with Opio and a Bluetech remix of Adham Shaikh.
