God spoke to Craig about healing for a lame Sikh priest. Then the police came... Jesus said it was for our good that he left the earth (John 16:7). That seems hard to believe. What could be better than sitting down and having a coffee with Jesus? Jesus is described as the living "word of God" (John 1:14) - that meant everything he said was God's voice as well as everything he did. The early disciples could hear God's voice as they were walking down the streets of Jerusalem, as they were sharing a meal with Jesus over bread and olives, as they were listening to Jesus preach on the temple steps. How could anything be better than that? The answer of course is that Jesus' departure signalled the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It was better not only because the Holy Spirit would remind us of everything Jesus said and did, he would also speak about things to come - that is, the issues that Jesus didn't cover while he was on earth! It's better because unlike Jesus who was limited to a physical body and the language and customs the first century Jews in the Greco-Roman world, the Holy Spirit speaks to apply those truths to new times, places and cultures! In this episode you'll see the truth of Jesus' words. Our guest, Craig Stephens is an officer of the Salvation Army and has heard God speak in places like India, China, Pakistan and communities in his own hometown. Craig ministers as an evangelist across Australia and beyond and trains others to share the good news. He also works with global missions movement, Impact Nations, and loves to take teams across the world to train them in preaching the gospel and healing the sick. In this episode, you'll hear about: Craig's God story, growing up in church but then leaving as he didn't feel like he could behave well enough to meet the church's standards. It was a few years later that Craig re-entered the church after a miraculous encounter with the Holy Spirit that changed his heart and gave him boldness to share his faith with others. The Holy Spirit lit a fuse that wouldn't go out! Craig's God-conversation that led him into ministry and in particular, working among the marginalised and broken in Sydney. Craig tells how the Holy Spirit showed him a vision of his middle-class church being mobilised to serve the poor with details about the actual building they could use. Later Craig shares how a visit to the local police and an offer to serve in the most difficult area of the town led them to the exact building! Then they watched as God brought transformation… I could see the people in our church carrying the grace they had in the community… the schoolteachers sitting alongside bedraggled, roughed up kids and coaching them in their schoolwork… the physiotherapists doing therapy in a particular room… the ladies who serve the morning tea hosting the community in a cafe. I couldn't stop seeing it. The incredible God-conversation that led Craig and his team to pray a Sikh priest who had been lame since birth and the God-conversation that subsequently led to a last minute escape from arrest by the Sikh police. A God conversation that led Craig and his team to reach people by the side of the road at the Athens Olympics. Subscribe to God Conversations with Tania Harris and never miss an episode! About Craig Stephens Craig is a Salvation Army Officer with a deep hunger for encounters of God. As the Australian Eastern Territorial Evangelist, he trains and equips people in evangelism and is responsible for “New Expressions” of The Salvation Army. Craig also oversees the Central Coast Regional Prayer Room (an interdenominational regional prayer space), a small network of house churches called “community tables”, a company of people gifted in evangelism across nearly 30 churches. Craig further serves on the board of Impact Nations (a global missions movement) (impactnations.com) and loves to take teams across the world to train them in ...
When the largest migrant shelter in El Paso closed on August 6th of last year, The Salvation Army had provided over 180,000 total meals. Although that specific project has ended, The Salvation Army has continued its mission to meet human need in His name without discrimination. The Salvation Army is now involved in a second project to continue its feeding operations at several hotels for homeless families and individuals that test COVID-positive. This is three meals per day, all of which are in the shelter kitchen before being transported to participating hotels. Salvation Army Officer, Major Estrada said, “These families came to The Salvation Army because they needed a helping hand, and it's great to see them reach out for spiritual support,” “That's exactly what we're here to do—to be good neighbors for our neighbors in need.” To learn more or offer your support visit https://southernusa.salvationarmy.org/elpaso/

We are starting our 5-week Christmas series today. This series is unique because each of these messages were written by a different Salvation Army Officer from around our Territory and we've asked our friend, Bethany Farrell, to be the voice of Christmas for Words of Life. While you will hear a different tone and perspective with each episode, all of these writers did such a good job highlighting the real-life experience of the birth of our Savior – specifically through the eyes of Mary and Joseph. This week's episode was written by Major Rick Raymer. https://salvationarmysoundcast.org/wordsoflife

Dozens of families lost their homes last month when Hurricane Fiona ripped through the southwest coast of Newfoundland. But right from day one, the whole community stepped up to help however they could. Volunteers with the Salvation Army headed to the kitchen and cooked hot meals for people who'd lost their homes. They're still offering that service, nearly five weeks later. David Harvey is the Salvation Army Officer in Port aux Basques.

This week, hosts Mike Nawrocki and Sarah Humphrey talk with Major Matt Satterlee of the Salvation Army, getting a behind the scenes look at this church and organization and also the distribution of the Ministry edition of The Bible for Me: Stories and Prayers. Major Matt Satterlee is currently serving as the National Youth Secretary for The Salvation Army. With responsibilities covering all of The Salvation Army's youth ministries from Hawaii to Maine, Major Satterlee is responsible for The Salvation Army's youth curriculum, summer camping ministry, and partnering with other churches and organizations that do youth ministry. Major Matt Satterlee has been a corps officer (pastor) in churches throughout Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. Major Matt Satterlee is the son of Salvation Army officers going back at least 4 generations. He was born in West Virginia and met the Lord at the age of 7 on an altar in the Frederick, Maryland corps. Moving around with his parents and growing in his faith for many years, he was accepted on a Salvationist Service Corps trip (mission trip) in the summer of 2002 to minister in Argentina and Paraguay. It was there, in the back hallway of the corps (church) in Asuncion, Paraguay, that the Lord called him to be a Salvation Army Officer. Major Matt Satterlee met his wife, Jamie, in Texas and were married in 2002. They entered The Salvation Army seminary in Atlanta, GA in 2004 as part of the Visionaries session and were ordained and commissioned to the Portsmouth, VA Corps as Corps Officers where their family grew with the addition of daughters Lillian and Susannah. Studies show that nearly half of all Christians say they accepted Christ before the age of 13. Major Matt Satterlee says, “If we are called to make others' salvation the first purpose of our lives, we should be exhausting ourselves in youth ministry.” Having come to National Headquarters following 7 years of ministry to youth and young adults, the Satterlees are passionate about the discipleship of young people.

Did you know The Salvation Army is a church? That's right. Every program of The Salvation Army is rooted in a passion to serve God by serving the hurting, the helpless and the hopeless. It's biblical: We love because God first loved us. It all began in London in 1865. The co-founders, a Methodist minister and his wife, William and Catherine Booth, walked the streets preaching to the homeless and hungry. Their efforts became The Salvation Army, which set out to offer compassionate, tangible service to people in need following a quasi-military structure with William Booth as its first General. Today, across the U.S., some 1,200 Salvation Army corps—or church—locations offer worship services every Sunday morning and programs throughout the week, from youth nights to music groups and opportunities for service. And the work is carried out across the country by some 63,000 employees, 3 million volunteers and roughly 3,500 officers, who complete a two-year training program to become ministers of The Salvation Army. Cadets Ismael and Verenice Gutierrez are about to be among their ranks. They're just days away from completing their training at the College for Officer Training at Crestmont in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. They will be commissioned as officers in The Salvation Army, as pastors, and appointed to serve in a community here in the western U.S., location to be determined. So allow me to introduce to you today, to share what it means to be a Salvation Army officer and why they each decided to become one, Cadets Ismael and Verenice Gutierrez. This episode marks the 100th interview for Bridging the Social Distance at The Village of Riverside Glen, and I interview Joyce Paul - a retired Salvation Army Officer, who has volunteered at Riverside Glen for 15 years, and is the sister of the late Lloyd Hetherington (Our first Riverside Glen guest for this show, and the resident who initiated this pandemic-era remote interviewing CFRU/Riverside Glen collaboration). Joyce tells us about her career as a Salvation Army Officer. Joyce's parents were Salvation Army officers, and she knew since she was six years old that she wanted to become a nurse through the Salvation Army to go over to help in Africa. That's exactly what she did! After heading to England to train as a Midwife, she then lived in Africa for ten years to help in hospitals. After some time her brother Lloyd joined her, as a principal at a local school, and it was there, through her brother, that she met her husband, who also became a Salvation Army Officer. After Africa, they moved to Canada and got married, and then moved all around Canada, to northern BC, Labrador, and many other places, helping out in hospitals, schools and wherever it was needed, up until retirement when they settled in Guelph.Joyce is a lovely guest with an interesting history, and we're thankful to her connecting to be our 100th Riverside Glen interview! This interview was originally recorded on March 23rd, 2022 This is a public episode.
