The name "Wahoo Sam Crawford" might not sound familiar to many Major League Baseball fans. But, it's probably quite familiar to fans of the Detroit Tigers. Wahoo Sam played for the Tigers back in the early 1900s. He was a phenomenally good hitter. In fact, if not for Ty Cobb, one could argue that Wahoo Sam might be the greatest to ever play for the Tigers. He had a career batting average of .309 to go along with a career OPS of .814. He averaged 191 hits a year as well. Not known for blazing speed, perhaps the most surprising of all when it comes to Wahoo Sam is this - he holds the record for most triples in a Major League career with 309 ... and ... he also holds the record for most inside-the-park home runs in a year with 12! But, the fact that he played during the same period as Ty Cobb stifled Crawford's popularity. Along with Cobb, however, Wahoo Sam helped the Tigers to three straight American League pennants: 1907, 1908, 1909. Unfortunately, Detroit never came out on top of any of those World Series. And the fact that this was the early 1900s also contributes to the fact that Wahoo Sam is not widely as known as he should be. However, the Veteran's Committee, at the constant urging of Cobb, elected Crawford to the Hall of Fame in 1957; and honor that was long overdue. Joining me on this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes to talk about Sam is author Kent Krause. Kent's book "Wahoo Sam Crawford, The King of Sluggers" is a must read for any fan of baseball, particularly fans of the Detroit Tigers. Kent shares so much with us, from Sam's upbringing, to his days working in a barber shop, through his career in the Majors, to his days playing in the Pacific Coast League.
In this episode of Sports the NEMO Way we bring the best Detroit Tigers to the table for discussion.
February 4, 1957, manager Joe McCarthy and outfielder Sam Crawford are elected to the Hall of Fame. McCarthy, the winningest manager in history, won nine pennants and four consecutive World Championships with the New York Yankees. Crawford, one of the greatest hitters of the dead-ball era, finished his career with 309 triples, first on the all-time list. Some have challenged Sam Crawford's status as a Hall of Famer, but the truth is that Crawford was one of the best sluggers of his era, hands down. Consider: Crawford retired as the American League career leader in home runs, extra-base hits, total bases, RBI, and triples. From 1910 to 1915 (when he was 30-35 years old), Sam led the AL in games played, total bases, RBI, extra-base hits, and triples. He was second in homers and hits, third in runs created, fourth in slugging, and batted .320 for that six-year stretch. He ranked that high while Ty Cobb, Tris Speaker, Home Run Baker, and Joe Jackson were in their prime. His total of 643 RBI from 1910-1915 were 118 more than his closest rival in the American League! Somehow however, it took a campaign by Cobb to get his teammate into the Hall of Fame.Though he never played in the major leagues, Joe McCarthy earned the respect of his players as one of the most successful managers in history. He guided two teams to the World Series, and orchestrated four consecutive World Championships at the helm of the Yankees, from 1936 to 1939. He relied on his remarkable memory, his "Ten Commandments of Baseball," and his brillant ability to manage all types of players, and ended up with the highest winning percentage in the history of the game.Description"With his lantern jaw and chunky body," wrote author David Kaiser, "he could be an impressive presence on the field, and although he respected umpires, he also knew how to try to intimidate them in a key game."

This week we discuss the 2023 MLB Trade Deadline with all of us big trades and big non-trades. The Mets appear to have punted, but does it have a greater purpose sooner than we think?. The Phillies continue to wobble up and down while making winning look so very difficult every game they manage to accomplish it. The big guns continue to struggle while the young players continue to impress. This week we discuss the resume of career triples leader Sam Crawford and find a man who was an OPS machine when there were no OPS machines pre-live ball. For our parting shots we discuss the the lackluster Phillies, the surging Orioles, and the quandry of fan sentiment toward sports ownership. Please join us as we discuss baseball topics and we continue our mission to make The Hall small. We hope you'll enjoy the ride.TimestampsPhillies Segment - 16:52Hall of Fame Discussion - 42:45Parting Shots - 53:00

Well, Terry went 19-35 with a 3.55 ERA as a 19-year-old for the 1884 Brooklyn Atlantics in the American Association, and blossomed into the No. 2 starter for the team that became the Brooklyn Bridegrooms in the National League in 1890, when he was 26-16 with a 2.94 ERA, teaming with 30-game winner Tom Lovett and the 23-11 Bob Caruthers to help the then-independent city bring home the National League pennant.Terry was released in 1892 and signed with the National League version of the Baltimore Orioles, who traded him to the Pirates after one start, a 7-2 loss to the Washington Senators (again, early NL version), whose star player was the deaf Billy Hoy. Terry stayed in Pittsburgh for the rest of 1892 and all of 1893 before making just one appearance for them in 1894 and moving to the Cubs — then the Chicago Colts — and remaining there until one start, his final one, in 1897.Clinton also played in Brooklyn, with the 1872 Eckfords in the National Association. His other teams? The 1873 Elizabeth Resolutes, 1874-75 Brooklyn Atlantics, and 1876 National League Louisville Colonels. Then… nothing from 1877-81… before returning with the Worcester Ruby Legs in 1882 NL. Clinton wrapped up with four years in the American Association, three with the Orioles, one with the Cincinnati Red Stockings, and all four of his career home runs — in 1,822 plate appearances — came with Baltimore in 1884. Sam shares his own path through self-development and self-learning as he progresses through his career. He's a big advocate of continued learning within the industry and believes that anyone should ‘enjoy the process' as they progress through their own learning. We discuss the benefits of conscious breathing. Sam operates a program down in Mornington called ‘The Monkey Movement' which is an exercise and wellness program to help benefit the health and wellbeing of the local community. As part of this program, they include breathing practices down by the beach, which are accompanied by meditation and hydrotherapy techniques. Sam and his crew have had an amazing response and I would recommend getting down to one of his sessions by the beach. Additionally, we touch on the typical ‘blokes' attitude' where men believe they can overcome anxious feelings by simply getting over it, or letting it bottle up inside. We talk about how this is a toxic way to go about dealing with mental health issues, and how seeking support from family and friends is so important. https://www.facebook.com/The-Monkey-Movement-105603981146268/ https://instagram.com/crawfrat32?utm_medium=copy_link https://instagram.com/themonkeymovement?utm_medium=copy_link https://www.themonkeymovement.com

"I was doing physical therapy and trying to get range of motion back in my knee, and that was probably one of the most painful things that I’ve been through. I was like, why am I doing this to myself?" While working on her return to the tour, Samantha Crawford joins the TENNIS.com Podcast with Nina Pantic and Irina Falconi at the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla. The 24-year-old American cracked the Top 100 in 2016, the same year she reached the semifinals of Brisbane as a qualifier. Before that breakthrough, she gained global recognition by winning the junior US Open in 2012, and turned pro while still a teenager. But knee injuries have plagued her since the age of 12, and in 2017, she had to step away from her playing career due to recurring left knee pain. She would end up needing a double cartilage replacement, totaling four left knee surgeries, and is only just easing back into hitting. On top of that, she's not eligible for a protected ranking (she'll explain why). It hasn't been all bad though as Crawford is using her free time to pursue a college degree, and has had the strong support of the USTA, her family and friends, and her dog, Lola. Tulsa badly needed a bounce-back game after blowing a 30-9 fourth quarter lead against now #19 SMU in triple overtime. It didn't happen. TU came out with energy in the first quarter against Navy, but couldn't capitalize - missing a 30 yard field goal after Navy fumbled the opening kickoff, and having a 98-yard touchdown pass called back after Sam Crawford "stepped out of bounds" and was declared ineligible. He did not step out of bounds. The Hurricane looked flat on all sides of the ball for the rest of the game after that, and ended up getting blown out 45-17. We recap the Navy loss, talk coaching changes, and preview this week's matchup at #21 Cincinnati. ALSO: if you want more info on the Cincinnati matchup, Ryan will be the guest on this week's Down the Drive podcast, which is Cincinnati's SB Nation blog/podcast. Ellet Lambie, and John Brunn join me to talk about this week’s action and the news surrounding our Tigers squad Matt Wallace was also kind enough to join us for the prospect on the prowl segment, where Matt profiles Futures game member Scott Sizemore. Topics include: Rick Porcello’s missed start, Carlos Guillen, Jeremy Bonderman, The All-Star Game, Brandon Inge’s push to the top, Luke French and more. In this week in Detroit Tigers history, the year was 1911. Ty Cobb and Sam Crawford were doing their best impression of Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle (the fore fathers?)
