We take to the road for this week's Young Stock Podcast as Sarah McIntosh attends the Teagasc/FBD student of the year award ceremony. The awards, sponsored by FBD, were presented to the top graduates of Teagasc Level 6 agriculture, horticulture, equine and forestry training programmes in 2024. With 4,000 students across the Teagasc college campuses, it was a great opportunity to meet the top of the crop students, who took home prizes on the day. Each finalist was nominated by their teacher and Teagasc college faculty and selected from a judging panel. On the day Kate Curran, who is no stranger to the Young Stock Podcast, was awarded the overall title of Teagasc/FBD student of the year for 2024. We get the first interview with Kate as the shock of winning the award sets in and she outlines what it means to her. We also hear from Danny Doyle, who took home the title last year as he fills us in on what he has been up to over the last year while giving advice to this year's winner. Thomas O'Connor from Tralee, Co Kerry, who took home the winning title for the full-time agriculture category speaks to us about his educational pathway and why he decided to attend a Teagasc course. Tipperary native Niamh Duggan, Carrick-on-Suir, took home the award for the full-time other land-based enterprises category. She speaks about progressing onto the Level 8 degree in South East Technological University and what her plans are for the summer months. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

InsTech, has launched its "State of Irish Insurtech Report 2024, to position Ireland as a global centre for insurance innovation, where industry giants and start-ups can come together to collaborate and create the next generation of insurance solutions. The findings of the new report were presented to Minister of State for Financial Services, Credit Unions and Insurance, Neale Richmond in a productive meeting on the potential for the sector. As the independent, neutral convener InsTech.ie plays a pivotal role in Ireland becoming a leader for insurance technology and insurance innovation. It champions Irish Insurtechs, supporting them to scale into international markets, by building awareness of the depth and breadth of insurance innovation emerging from Ireland. Founding members include AA, Allianz, Aviva, Axa, FBD, Irish Life, VHI, Laya, Scor, Unum and RSA/123.ie. One of the first activities InsTech.ie conducted back in 2022 was the mapping of the indigenous Insurtechs in Ireland. Each year InsTech updates this map and it has now grown to 114 Insurtechs. To coincide with the release of the latest version of the map, InsTech.ie conducted a survey of Irish Insurtechs to gain a better understanding of the landscape in Ireland and learn more about how it can support them to scale and encourage better, stronger collaboration across the ecosystem. On receiving the report Minister for State at the Department of Finance, Neale Richmond said, "Innovation in the Insurtech sector has the potential to pass on huge benefits to customers. Ireland hosts all of the world's top 10 global software companies and 11 of the top 15 global insurers. With a strong track record in both insurance and technology, Ireland has all of the elements to create a powerful cluster of insurance innovation and is a natural hub for the next wave of disruptive Insurtech firms. This InsTech report gives us a framework to explore the opportunities." On the launch of the report InsTech.ie CEO Gary Leyden said, "We have seen huge growth in the number and funding of Insurtech startups in Ireland and it has the potential to be a global centre for insurance innovation . The main finding of the survey this year is that there is an acknowledgement between incumbents and startups in the insurance sector that they can work together to a greater extent and have an increasing appetite to do so. This has the potential to deliver better experiences to consumers. " Leyden added, "InsTech.ie will be the forum to encourage greater innovation and we will be announcing more initiatives to support incumbents and startups collaborate and innovate together in the coming months." Some key findings of the survey in the report include: Background of Founders: 39% of founders came from an insurance background. Interestingly, a greater number of respondents stated that they came from a non-financial services background. Ambition: 90 percent Insurtech startups are seeking to enter into new markets. Challenges: Founders listed "resistance to change" as the main barriers to implementing technological innovations in the insurance industry. Potential for innovation: 68.7percent of stakeholders surveyed said emerging technologies (e.g., AI, blockchain) were "essential for innovation and growth." Ireland has witnessed a range of successful startup ventures, with the Irish Insurtech cluster being led by Fineos. Fast-growing companies such as Kota and DOCOsoft are also providing crucial technological solutions for the insurance industry. Working with their large incumbent members and these startups InsTech.ie aims to accelerate further collaboration and innovation in the industry. M., Rostagno, A., Ghiso, J., Lewis, P. A., Revesz, T., Hardy, J., Pocock, J. M., Houlden, H., Schott, J. M., Salih, D. A., Lashley, T., Wray, S. Abstract: Mutations in ITM2B cause familial British, Danish, Chinese and Korean dementias. In familial British dementia (FBD) a mutation in the stop codon of the ITM2B gene (also known as BRI2) causes a C-terminal cleavage fragment of the ITM2B/BRI2 protein to be extended by 11 amino acids. This fragment, termed amyloid-Bri (ABri), is highly insoluble and forms extracellular plaques in the brain. ABri plaques are accompanied by tau pathology, neuronal cell death and progressive dementia, with striking parallels to the aetiology and pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. The molecular mechanisms underpinning FBD are ill-defined. Using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells, we show that expression of ITM2B/BRI2 is 34-fold higher in microglia than neurons, and 15-fold higher in microglia compared with astrocytes. This cell-specific enrichment is supported by expression data from both mouse and human brain tissue. ITM2B/BRI2 protein levels are higher in iPSC-microglia compared with neurons and astrocytes. Consequently, the ABri peptide was detected in patient iPSC-derived microglial lysates and conditioned media but was undetectable in patient-derived neurons and control microglia. Pathological examination of post-mortem tissue support ABri expression in microglia that are in proximity to pre-amyloid deposits. Finally, gene co-expression analysis supports a role for ITM2B/BRI2 in disease-associated microglial responses. These data demonstrate that microglia are the major contributors to the production of amyloid forming peptides in FBD, potentially acting as instigators of neurodegeneration. Additionally, these data also suggest ITM2B/BRI2 may be part of a microglial response to disease, motivating further investigations of its role in microglial activation. This has implications for our understanding of the role of microglia and the innate immune response in the pathogenesis of FBD and other neurodegenerative dementias including Alzheimer's disease. it's Trump Tuesday which has nothing to do with Donald but if you want a good week you gotta get over your Monday malaise and "trumpet" on Tuesday. And with your permission I want to encourage you to be bold brave and strong today and I don't want you to make any FBDs... So let me tell you what an FBD is and why it will also make you feel bad. And I have never liked email. Of course I have to do it because that's the way things are done so often today. One of the things I'm glad for is that now for the most part my AI dictation knows me so well that I can do most of my typing by talking and the robot does the typing for me and also includes some embarrassing typos from time to time but I've learned to live with that. And I try to catch them when I can. But sometimes I miss. But there's more to it than inconvenience, emails are changing too many things about how we communicate because emails are not for communication they are for information and they are very bad sources of communication because communication is always about building friendships and relationships and so let me give you a few examples of why you should do a lot less typing and texting and a lot more talking and communicating.

GST has traditionally been both of our favorite Pantera record because of it's insane vibe but FBD might objectively be their best record. I think the grime and vulnerability of FBD influenced the nu metal movement. Here we see Phil's lyrical perspective shift from detached aggro bro word salad to intense, sincere, vulnerable, and outright uncomfortable honesty. By using different vocal styles and harsher screams Phil paves the way for the next 10-15 years of mainstream metal music. Vinnie permanently etches his name into the history of metal drumming by expanding the vocabulary to places that people still haven't really caught up to. Dime gets weird af and establishes himself as a legit legend. And the unsung hero, Rex, holds in all together. Above all both of these records are creative and artistic statements. Anyway, I'm gonna stop typing because I have too much to say, so take a listen.

The provenance of video games was always the domain of the misunderstood misfits. Old school coin-operated stand up terminals were located in smokey dive-bar back rooms or seedy shopping malls. The early in-home entertainment consoles were first adopted by the propeller head and pocket protector set. As those gaming systems became more advanced and realistic, the introverted and ostracized members of youth became the standard bearers of the online gaming communities. The Boomer establishment has a rich history of being at odds with the video game industry. Early 1980s fears of Japanese manufacturing supremacy, placing societal violence's blame on gaming's cartoonish pistol play, inaccurately correlating health issues to screen time, as well as dismissing a dynamic and innovative sector as a passing fad. You name it, Boomer's did everything but self-reflect. What's more - just this week China's official news outlet — published a lengthy analysis that used terms such as "opium" and "electronic drug" to describe the harmful effects of gaming on children. "It turns out 'spiritual opium' has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry," the article read. "Insiders warn: watch out for the harm of online games." As in so many other instances - the Boomers and Commies got it wrong. Again. GenX knew very early that video games were none of the above, but rather a wild frontier of entertainment, education and camaraderie. The Millennials grabbed the baton and went sprinting farther down the path to take gaming to a place not even the most enthusiastic GenXer could dream possible. One of those thought leaders is our guest on this episode of FBD. Will Hershey (twitter: @maybebullish) is the visionary CEO and cofounder of Roundhill Investments with offices in NYC and SF. Roundhill believes that e-sports and video games are the future of live media, sports and entertainment. Will and the Buzzards swap old school video game stories, discuss investing in this sector of the economy is no longer a fringe frontier exercise, as well as the future of the metaverse and sports gambling. So set the control paddle down, unplug the headset and kill the screen. Roll up the dank and pour a drink. You may just walk away ready to reposition your investment portfolio with some weighting to gaming! After you spray the citrus, mind you...

FBD has committed to paying out "valid claims" to its public house insurance customers for financial losses incurred as a result of pandemic related closures. The insurance company was left with no choice after the High Court delivered a landmark decision on Friday on the back of a test case taken by four pub owners. Section 3 of FBD's Public House Insurance policy provides cover for business closures arising from "outbreaks of contagious or infectious diseases on the premises or within 25 miles of same". FBD claimed the cover didn't extend to nationwide outbreaks, and was instead confined to more localised cases. However, in a detailed judgement delivered on Friday, Mr Justice Denis McDonald, refused to accept that it requires the closure to be proximately caused by local outbreaks, and found them liable for costs incurred since the forced closure of the pubs almost a full year ago. The actual amount has yet to be decided. This case was taken by four pub owners, but its outcome has far reaching consequences, with up to 1,300 other publicans having the same policy. Pat was joined on the line by Darragh McAllister, Clare Chair of the VFI, and Brian Winters, Solicitor and publican and founder of the Save Irish Pubs Campaign, to discuss the ramifications.

THE HIGH COURT has ruled that four pub owners are entitled to be compensated by insurer FBD for the disruption their businesses suffered due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In a landmark decision, the outcome of which affects claims made by some 1,000 Irish pubs and restaurants, Mr Justice Denis McDonald found that a policy sold by FBD covered losses the pubs sustained by having to close due to the global health emergency. It's the first sports preview of the year and we're looking at the three main field sports as the senior Gaelic Footballers rejoin the action a week later than the rugby and soccer sides across the county. We're chatting to Gary Donohoe, the manager of the County U20 side, as well as a selector with Terry Hyland's senior county team about the FBD Semi Final against the Rossies on Sunday and his own charges in the U20 Philly McGuinness Cup against Longford as a curtain raiser for the O'Byrne Cup visit of Dublin to Pearse Park on Saturday afternoon. We'll be casting an eye back at their defeat last weekend to Fermanagh also. Patricia Forde of the Leitrim Local Sports Partnership will be filling us in on all the opportunities for the general public to get out and active this spring with Operation Transformation walks taking place next Saturday (18th @ 11am) in Ballinamore, Manorhamilton and Carrick on Shannon as well as Dromahair (Sunday 19th). We also find out more about coaching and child protection courses, their Swim 4 All programme and plenty more of the work they carry out with their various partners across the county. In this episode of the Getting Smart Podcast, the Getting Smart team is throwing it back to one of their favorite episodes from Season 1 where they explore and listen to some student stories around their experiences with project-based learning (PBL); have an interview with a project-based learning STEM teacher of Flight by Design; as well as hear from education leaders in the project-based world, Bob Lenz and John Larmer of Buck Institute for Education (BIE). The students in Flight by Design, an engineering and math course at Raisbeck Aviation High School in the Highline School District, are immersed in a year-long project to design an airfoil. In the process, the students are learning about engineering, math, and science while also collaborating and communicating effectively with their team. In today’s episode, you can look forward to hearing answers to questions such as: how do projects make students feel? What is it like, from a student’s point of view and a teacher’s point of view, to participate and lead meaningful projects? What skills do projects teach? And why is project-based learning, perhaps, a necessity for our democracy? You can also look forward to hearing BIE Executive Director Lenz discuss his inspiration for the work he does to spread high-quality project-based learning across the country (and the world); and John Larmer, author and BIE editor in chief, telling the team exactly what constitutes a high-quality project. Key Takeaways: [:16] About today’s rerun episode from season 1! [:48] What Megan thinks about when she hears the word “project.” [1:50] Did Megan do any cool and meaningful projects back when she was a student? [2:40] About the students in the Flight by Design class and their latest project. [3:20] FbD students explain their project assignment and what it has taught them. [4:50] The students' career goals and how this project has helped them come one step closer to reaching those goals. [6:00] The importance of the skills these students are learning with project-based learning. [6:55] What these students would tell their future selves. [7:44] How mentors that partner with Flight by Design have helped students learn. [8:30] How this student learns best. [9:05] What the student likes best about project-based learning. [10:40] An introduction to the teacher who teaches the students who were just interviewed. [11:03] The teacher introduces himself and explains the Flight by Design class and how their projects work. [17:01] The teacher’s recommendations to other teachers on creating a better class environment and more effective projects. [20:25] About Getting Smart’s next few interviews: Bob Lenz and John Larmer of Buck Institute for Education (BIE). [20:56] John describes what a good student project is. [22:18] Bob talks about an impactful project he did in the 5th grade under the instruction of his teacher, Mr. Cooper. [23:37] Bob’s thoughts on the way students most effectively learn. [24:23] Why Bob started working as Executive Director at BIE and his excitement for PBL. [26:14] What people should do if they want to learn more. In this episode we put the elusive Fast Big Dog, known in the business world as Jon Schafer, in front of the mic for his answers to the 17 Questions for 2017. It brings a conclusion to the FasterSkier interview series run last fall before the start of the 2016/2017 cross-country, nordic combined and biathlon race seasons. Schafer is knee deep in the nordic scene as high performance director for USA Nordic Sport, a supporter of many aspiring skiers, and a huge Evel Knievel devotee — note Schafer's race suit. http://fasterskier.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/2017/03/Nordic-Nation-17-Questions-with-FBD.mp3 (To subscribe to the Nordic Nation podcast channel, download the iTunes app. If you have iTunes, subscribe to Nordic Nation here.) Yes, it's that time of year and depending on who you are, it means two things: the World Cup is about to start and Noah Hoffman's Fantasy Cross Country is live. In this episode, as with most things, Nordic Nation goes deep. We scour our digital rolodex for insider information. With the first weekend of racing soon upon us, we looked for the beta on who to pick for a fantasy team and who to leave on the proverbial sidelines. We speak with the Hoff and the Oz of his Fantasy League, Adam Mahar. And we track down a winning player from last year who resides in Sweden. We also connect with FasterSkier's resident gear tester savant, Jon Schafer — he's a man of many names too, think Fast Big Dog and/or FBD. And finally about thirty minutes into the episode, we strike gold with two players from the Midwest; Kristor and Dean are their names. Seriously, we dug deep to find these guys. With their insights, we might just be onto breaking the European dominance in Hoffman's Fantasy League. Last year 11 of the 13 prizes went to players on the other side of the Atlantic. Irish Farmers Journal news correspondent Paul Mooney was in Brussels on Monday for the EU-wide farmers' protest and special meeting of agriculture ministers. He tells news editor Patrick Donohoe about the atmosphere on the streets and the outcome to be expected from the €500m in support for farm incomes announced by the European Commission. The debate on rural crime heated up again in the past few days and part of the problem is livestock theft, with a growing number of farmers buying insurance against this risk. Digital editor Thomas Hubert talked to Fergal Brady, a sales executive with FBD in the border region, where the problem is most serious. In Co Mayo, the Calvey family are famous for the quality of the Blackface lambs they raise and butcher on Achill Island - so much so that they have trademarked the name Achill for lamb sales. But in recent years, another company, Caoracla, has started to source gourmet lamb sourced from the island and the Currane Peninsula. Thomas Hubert met Caoracla's director Edward Johnston, who is from a sheep farm on Achill Island himself. Irish Country Living is putting the spotlight on mouth cancer ahead of a special awareness day next week. Journalist Mary Phelan explains how a Kildare farmer made it through the disease, but only after he saw his whole life and his farm turned upside down.
