Some of the stories and teaching in Luke are mighty familiar. When Jesus speaks about building our house on a rock, that's a metaphor that sticks. We must all make a decision about Jesus and the decision we make makes all the difference when the creek inevitably rises. In Luke 7:1–10 we come to a less familiar encounter between Jesus and Roman centurion. Actually, we can't quite speak of this as an encounter at all, but an observation that leads us to a critical message from Jesus concerning how we're saved. Before we obey Jesus, we call on Jesus to "Say the Word."

The centurion's response to Jesus reveals a profound faith in the Lord's authority, inviting us to reflect on how we call upon the Lord for the grace we need. (Lectionary #175) December 2, 2024 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com  

From the Gospel acclamation: "Come and save us, LORD our God; Let your face shine upon us, that we may be saved." A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (Mt 8:5-11) When Jesus entered Capernaum, a centurion approached him and appealed to him, saying, "Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully." He said to him, "I will come and cure him." The centurion said in reply, "Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed." Although Jesus is willing to go to the servant's house, the centurion feels unworthy to have him under his roof. He asks Jesus to simply speak a word of healing, drawing on his experience as a leader and as one who leads others. He trusts the authority of Jesus and has faith in him. Jesus is amazed by this and turns to those following him, witnesses to the centurion's faith, and says, "Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven." We hear also in the first reading the hope of having the Lord enter under our roof, as Isaiah prays, "O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the LORD!" God, let me follow the centurion's example of faith and trust in the word of Jesus to heal me. In the Gospel, the servant is "lying at home paralyzed, suffering dreadfully." I am sure there will be moments throughout the day when I am completely stuck, stifled by uncertainty and wondering where you are and how to move toward you. I may be paralyzed in that moment, but you are not. Give me the grace to remember this prayer and bear witness to your mercy: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. This sermon is not a prescription about sex. It's about the discomfort many of us feel with the word “sex.” At the mention of this word, maybe you're already feeling uncomfortable. You would really like me to move on. You're starting to cringe, your body temperature is beginning to rise, and you'd really like this sermon to be about something else because for you this subject is inappropriate. Well, it's that discomfort that we need to address because when people are unable or are not allowed to talk about something that is natural and God-designed, then we're in trouble as believers.

·      Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see – Hebrews 11:1 ·     You need faith that God is at work ·       A catalyst is an agent that provokes or speeds change. ·      Your faith changes you.  ·      Your faith changes other people.  ·       Matthew 8:5-13: 5 When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” 7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,' and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,' and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. 11 I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! Let it be done just as you believed it would.” And his servant was healed at that moment. ·       Humility before help ·       Only say the word and my son will be healed.  ·       Love your enemies.  ·       Does your faith amaze anyone?  ·       True love warns.  ·       Every time Jesus speaks of hell in Matthew, he is addressing people who thought they were exempt. ·       Depart.  It will happen according to your faith.  ·       The centurion's faith is the catalyst for Jesus to heal his son.  ·       Your faith can be the catalyst for God to work in someone's life. ·       Is your faith a catalyst?  LIFE GROUP DISCUSSION QUESTIONS  Starter Question: In your life, who has had amazing faith?  1.      Read Matthew 8:5-13 2.      In your opinion, did the centurion have to overcome any prejudices toward Jews in order to approach Jesus?  What do you think these might be? 3.      The centurion speaks “as one under authority.”   He compares his understanding of authority to Jesus.  What does this say to you about Jesus' authority? 4.      Jesus says “the sons of the Kingdom will be cast out into the gloom where there will be crying and gnashing of teeth.  What does this teach you about hell? 5.      Jesus praises the faith of the centurion, and tells him that his son will be healed “according to your faith.”  What does this teach us about the power of our faith? 6.      Is there someone in your life that needs the power of your faith?  Who is it and please share their needs.

Those who read actively and consistently improve brain function, knowledge of the world, vocabulary, and are more likely to earn substantially higher incomes than those who don't. At times marginalized people rally together to help each other in a time of need. The Dong family, who hailed from China found themselves unable to secure housing due to racially restrictive covenants in southern California many years ago until the descendants of formerly enslaved people, the Thompson family, gave them a chance. When Navy pilots talk about a shooter, it has nothing to do with guns, but everything to do with successfully launching off the boat. Take some advice from your wingmen; whenever you have a chance to fly a jet……take it! Failure to treat addiction to drugs or alcohol destroys individuals and causes long-lingering suffering to surviving family members. For some in the autumn of life, a trip down memory lane rekindles immediate recall of games played (outside) as children that kept us active, out of trouble and aware of a world bigger than ourselves. Meet a pair of college wingmen who did a good deed to lift the spirits of a beloved protector of their group who is less privileged than themselves. Their efforts helped to reunite an individual with his family thousands of miles away and brought joy into his life that would not have happened otherwise.
