We say it every Mass: “Lord, I am not worthy… but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.” What are we asking—and what should we expect? Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks unpack the centurion's faith behind that line, how the Eucharist gives not just a word but the Word made flesh, and why Communion is an invitation already given—not a feeling we must wait for. We close with a simple New Year resolution: prepare better, receive more, and let grace heal what we cannot. Through the three lenses: honesty with self, charity toward others, under a living relationship with God.Key IdeasFrom Scripture to altar: the centurion's “say the word” (authority, trust) becomes our Communion prayer—humble, confident, obedient.More than a word: at Mass we receive the Giver Himself—Jesus, truly present in the Eucharist—superabundant love for unworthy hearts.Invitation stands: unless you should refrain, don't wait for a private signal; the liturgy itself is Christ's call to come.Feelings vary; grace doesn't: ritual prayers serve a billion souls—some days they fit our mood, others they lead it.A practical resolution: arrive a bit early, call to mind sins and needs, and ask to receive Him more fully this year.Links & ReferencesScripture named (no links):The centurion's faith (Matthew 8:5–13; cf. UnCabaret founder and host, Beth Lapides, talks about creating the show to have a place to perform then how it shifted to a place where she nurtured Taylor Negron, Judy Toll, Patton Oswalt, Margaret Cho, Bob Odenkirk, Janeane Garofalo, and everyone else to be the best performer they could. She talks about how to be creative and how to stop getting in your own way, how life is change and change is good.  She finds joy in pulling weeds and eating just the right amount of pizza. Bio:  BETH LAPIDES works at the intersection of comedy, creativity and consciousness. She is the creator, host and producer of the legendary, genre shifting, UnCabaret - widely considered to be the original “alt-comedy” show. The LA Times called her the ‘godmother of alternative comedy.” She's produced UnCab for Comedy Central, Amazon Studios, audible etc. And created its spin offs Say The Word and The Other Network. UnCabaret continues to help launch and relaunch some of your favorite iconic comedic voices. Beth is the author of Recorded Books' original audio book “So You Need To Decide,” which was on Vulture's Top 10 Comedy Books of 2022 and which Variety called “a potentially life-changing treasure.” Her first published book, “Did I Wake You? Haiku For Modern Living,” opened the door to a wave of comedy haiku. Her very first books were handmade artist books and were shown, among other places at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her wide ranging muti-disciplinary career has included writing for O Magazine, correspondent-ing on NPR's All Things Considered, touring her solo shows – currently It's A Lot – hosting a daily radio show for Comedy World, shepherding an extremely short lived talk show for MTV, developing a pilot with an Emmy award winning producer, hosting a podcast called Life and Beth, and running a campaign to make First Lady an elected position. An occasional actress, she was the first guest star on Will and Grace and the performance artist on Sex and The City – and has appeared in many indie films most often as an offbeat authority figure. Beth had a parallel career as a teacher and muse, known for her ability to help creators find their authentic voice – understand their own process, transform, complete and produce their work. She's gone from teaching comedians to coaching a vast array of creatives - currently in a framework called The Infinite Creator.

Read OnlineWhen Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith. I say to you, many will come from the east and the west, and will recline with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob at the banquet in the Kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 8:10–11Jesus looks into the heart, not just at one's exterior. Today's Gospel presents us with the profound faith of a Roman centurion—a pagan and Gentile. Though not of the Jewish faith, this centurion recognized Jesus' spiritual authority to heal. Perhaps he had seen Jesus do so before or had heard of the many stories of miracles. Or maybe he was moved by the Holy Spirit to trust in Jesus. The Roman soldier begged Jesus to heal one of his severely ill servants. But that's not all he did. Once Jesus offered to go to the servant, the Roman centurion manifested humility and faith by saying, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.” Catholics now pray similar words just before Holy Communion. When Jesus heard this statement of faith, He was “amazed,” because among the descendants of Abraham, He had found no such faith. The centurion's faith broke through cultural and religious barriers. As a Gentile and a Roman soldier, he was an unlikely candidate for such profound faith. Yet, his humility and trust in Jesus surpassed that of many of the chosen people.Let's consider two points from this story. First, when you pray the centurion's words at Mass, just before Holy Communion, does your depth of faith and conviction also lead Jesus to be “amazed”? Do you know and profess your unworthiness, yet beg our Lord to enter your soul nonetheless? The centurion's humility is a powerful lesson for us. Despite his authority and status, he recognized his unworthiness before Jesus. This humility is vital to approaching the Eucharist, acknowledging our need for God's grace and mercy before receiving Him into our souls. Consider whether you mean those words every time you pray them or if they have become a habit that you say distractedly.Second, Jesus' promise to heal this Gentile's servant illustrates the universality of Jesus' gift of salvation. Our Catholic faith is not only for those born and raised Catholic; it's for everyone, and we must do our part to extend that invitation to everyone through prayer and witness. We must turn to our Lord and beg for grace and healing upon others. God has the power to do all things. Like the centurion, we must pray for others, trusting that God hears our petitions and will act in His perfect timing. We must believe that, and then present the needs of those around us to Him, begging Him to draw them to Himself. We must pray, “Lord, only say the word! Say Your word of healing, cleansing, conversion, transformation, and every word that brings forth Your will!”Reflect today on this Roman centurion's faith and prayerful words and try to internalize them more fully. Meditate on those words outside of the Holy Mass so that next time you attend Mass, that prayer just before Holy Communion will more fully prepare your soul for the gift of Christ Jesus Himself. My amazed Lord, the Roman centurion's faith touched Your human soul. Please give me the grace I need to have this same depth of faith and to express that faith more fully every time I prepare to receive You in Holy Communion. Jesus, I trust in You.Image via Adobe StockSource of content: catholic-daily-reflections.comCopyright © 2025 My Catholic Life! Inc. All rights reserved. Used with permission via RSS feed.

What does real faith look like? It's not polished or perfect. It doesn't cling to control or rely on its own strength. It's raw, humble, and desperate. In Luke 7, Jesus moves toward a Roman centurion, an outsider, and marvels at his faith. This man doesn't demand a sign or claim to be worthy. He simply says to the One with all authority and strength, “Just say the word.” Real faith isn't measured by how much we have but by the One we trust. In this sermon we'll explore a faith that cries for help, bows in humility, and clings to the word of Jesus. Come and be reminded that real faith rests in his strength, not the size of our belief.

In Hebrews 11, the so-called "faith hall of fame" includes heroic figures like Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, David, the judges, the prophets and the people of God. These people were exemplary in their dependence upon Yahweh. And yet, Jesus claims in Luke 7:1-10 that there's another person whose faith might be greater than them all. And of all people, it's a Roman centurian. Wait...what?"I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." - JesusWhat was so remarkable to Jesus about the faith of this man? What can his faith show us about our own?

Well, it's that discomfort that we need to address because when people are unable or are not allowed to talk about something that is natural and God-designed, then we're in trouble as believers.

Dive into Luke 7 with Pastor Derek as we explore the profound power of Jesus' words in "Just Say The Word." This week, we examine how Christ's authority and life-giving power are revealed through two remarkable encounters: the healing of a centurion's servant and the raising of a widow's son. Pastor Derek unpacks the significance of Christ's words, highlighting their authority over sickness, death, and even our very souls. We'll see how a Roman centurion, a man of authority himself, recognized the ultimate authority of Jesus, understanding that "say the word, and my servant will be healed." Then, witness the life-transforming power as Jesus speaks to a dead young man, restoring him to his grieving mother, demonstrating that Christ's words bring not just physical healing, but eternal life. This sermon challenges us to consider: Do we truly believe in the authority of Christ's words? Do we heed them, knowing they hold the power to change everything? Discover how, in a world filled with noise, the words of Jesus stand apart, offering hope, healing, and eternal life. Join us as we unpack these powerful stories, reminding ourselves that the words of Christ are vital, necessary, and life-changing. Whether you're a long-time believer or exploring faith, this message will inspire you to trust in the unparalleled authority and life found in Jesus' voice. Some of the stories and teaching in Luke are mighty familiar. When Jesus speaks about building our house on a rock, that's a metaphor that sticks. We must all make a decision about Jesus and the decision we make makes all the difference when the creek inevitably rises. In Luke 7:1–10 we come to a less familiar encounter between Jesus and Roman centurion. Actually, we can't quite speak of this as an encounter at all, but an observation that leads us to a critical message from Jesus concerning how we're saved. Before we obey Jesus, we call on Jesus to "Say the Word."

The centurion's response to Jesus reveals a profound faith in the Lord's authority, inviting us to reflect on how we call upon the Lord for the grace we need. (Lectionary #175) December 2, 2024 - Cathedral Rectory - Superior, WI Fr. Andrew Ricci - www.studyprayserve.com

This sermon is not a prescription about sex. It's about the discomfort many of us feel with the word “sex.” At the mention of this word, maybe you're already feeling uncomfortable. You would really like me to move on. You're starting to cringe, your body temperature is beginning to rise, and you'd really like this sermon to be about something else because for you this subject is inappropriate. Well, it's that discomfort that we need to address because when people are unable or are not allowed to talk about something that is natural and God-designed, then we're in trouble as believers.
