Athens, Georgia may have been known as the music hotbed during the middle 80's, but Drivin' N Cryin' out of nearby Atlanta was benefitting from the Georgia focus as well. Scarred But Smarter was their debut album created on a shoestring budget, with songs that reflect the sound of the Athens scene (where the album was recorded), but with lyrical depth and variety. After several down years, Drivin' N Cryin' is on the upswing again, and you can catch them on tour today. We are thrilled to have Eric Von Haessler of "The Von Haessler Doctrine" (WSB Radio) join us to present this great album. Eric’s knowledge on the band is extensive, as he produced and directed the 2012 documentary, “Scarred by Smarter: Life n Times of Drivin n Cryin.” Fans should check it out on Amazon Prime!Scarred but Smarter This rocking title track from the album is about picking yourself up and learning from the difficulties of life. "There's always a chance to get restarted to a new world, new life, scarred but smarter."Keys to Me This track discusses the hope that someone will "get" you, even if you don't understand yourself. "Turn me around and listen you to me."Bring Home the Bacon "Bring home the bacon and take out the trash, it's just another matter of fact." You can sense the Beatles influence in this song. This slower track provides a sense of the variety on the album.Stand Up and Fight for ItThis song in 3/4 time encourages living the life that you want to live, and don't let others define you. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Jumpin' Jack Flash” by the Rolling StonesWhoopi Goldberg starred in the movie with this title, featuring the song from decades past. STAFF PICKS:“The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” by Timbuk3Bruce's staff pick was popular on the Georgia Tech campus and at graduations at the time, but the line wasn't supposed to be taken so optimistically. It referenced nuclear holocaust.“To Be a Lover” by Billy IdolRob picked this hit single off Idol's “Whiplash Smile” album, which was a cover originally co-written and performed by Booker T. Jones and William Bell in 1968. The original title was "Forgot to Be Your Lover."“Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone” by Glass TigerBrian's staff pick features a Canadian group who got a boost with a credit and a guest appearance by Bryan Adams on this song. This is off their first album “The Thin Red Line.” “Will I Ever Understand You?” by BerlinDespite the name, Wayne points out that this band actually originated from California. This deeper cut describes a person looking in the mirror trying to understand herself. LAUGH TRACK:“Addicted to Spuds” by Weird Al YankovicWe finish off this episode with Weird Al's parody of the Robert Palmer classic.

Kevn Kinney explains to Rob and Seth the improvisational spirit behind, and each week's theme of the, “Kevn Kinney Auto Shop and Magic Show” - his ambitious five-night residency which takes place at City Winery in Atlanta August 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 (every Tuesday). Kinney sits with his guitar, sometimes breaking into song while offering wisdom with regard to why musicians shouldn’t watch themselves on stage, how the popularity of vinyl has actually made It harder for many artists to release music on vinyl, fan behavior, his Best Of Songs release and the four separately-themed EPs from which it was culled, the project he is working on with BR5-49 co-founder Chuck Mead, performing in Europe, the evils of addiction, the Drivn’ n Cryin’ documentary “Scarred But Smarter,” why musicians should learn musical history, the danger of credit cards, appreciating and respecting our returning soldiers, the horrors of cabbage patch birth, Atlanta’s Ferris wheel and more. He also offers a li’l taste of his hit “Straight To Hell,” done reggae style, and demonstrates his various approaches to “Scarred But Smarter” and “Fly Me Courageous,” and performs other Kinney gems in their entirety. Closing music includes a sneak preview of next week’s episode featuring the brilliant Australian guitarist, Geoff Achison. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Allow a few seconds for buffering.Yahoo! player or right click HERE to download | Launch pop-up playerFor over 25 years, Eric Von Haessler has had a conversation with America from behind a radio microphone. For much of that time, he ridiculed everyone and everything in his path to hilarious effect. In recent years, he's shared his more serious and well-considered thoughts on everything from politics, to science, to NASCAR, to his favorite band, Drivin' n' Cryin'. These days he can be heard on his podcast, "The Show," and weekly WSB radio show, "The Von Haessler Doctrine." Eric sits down with Art and recounts the history of his top-rated former morning show, The Regular Guys, which was the toast of the L.A. FM talk radio scene in the mid-1990's at KLSX, and was a consistent ratings winner for its 16 year run in Atlanta on 96 Rock and Rock 100.5. He also shares the experiences and lessons of his rough-and-tumble youth, such as visiting his father in prison, dropping out of high school, living with heroin users, and ultimately finding a way up and out through comedy. 2 hours 22 minutes. Art's comments: "It's crazy to think in December of 1997 I was on an egg crate mattress in L.A. trying to tune in this cool new show I'd read about, and in 2015 one of the hosts is in my house. If you're a Regular Guys fan, this is a fantastic oral history. Eric has told these stories on the air, but this is the first time they've been told as one narrative. And if you make it through my opening comments, you'll feel like you just sat through all 16 years of the Regular Guys' run in Atlanta. "By the way, Larry Wachs was always nice and even encouraging to me personally, except that time he blasted me on his blog, which I found merely hysterical."
