The Christmas season is typically associated with lights, gifts, and the baby Jesus. Those things have their place, but Jesus wasn't born in Bethlehem so we could have a day off of work or a reason to buy each other gifts. He came to save us. Today's message looks at the root cause of Christmas - the fall of mankind into sin.

The serpent’s deception casts doubt on God’s Word, character, and goodness. Adam and Eve’s fall into sin marks the breaking point of humanity’s innocence and communion with God. Here we confront the nature of temptation, the reality of sin, and the desperate need for redemption outside ourselves. Visit us online at: RenewalChurch.net

Have you ever seen something online that when you saw it in real life, it was not the same? Like a vacation rental that looked beautiful, only to find that they didn’t seem to be the same places. How about being asked to click a link only to find out it was malicious? Like clickbait. The basis is to bait you into doing something that might not be good for you. Don’t Take the Bait. This week, the bait of deception is explored and how to avoid it. A story as old as the hills, the first example of deception in the bible. Adam and Eve and Satan are the characters. Satan’s goal is to deceive Eve into doing what God doesn’t want her to do,….eat from the tree in the middle of the garden. The Bait of Deception. Satan says it is ok, it looks ok, but it is a lie. And just like our lives can be sometimes, the story is predictable. What are some things to be cautious about and how to recognize the deception is what this message is about.

Adam and Eve failed. It’s hard to grasp just how big a failure that was. Their failure produced every lie, every murder, every rape, every war, every cancer, every divorce, every bad day. Their failure is why the lawn mower breaks. And on and on and on. And they can’t blame their failure on heredity, the environment, or anything anyone did to them. And yet they will blame. We might feel like we can rightly blame, but wherever we place the blame; we still have a problem – we sin, because we choose to sin. Let’s read Genesis 2:16-17; 3:1-7.
Dr. Larry Hayward preaches on the First Sunday in Lent. The Scripture passages are Genesis 3:1-7 and Matthew 4:1-11.
The first piece of the Full Armor God that Paul presents is the belt of truth. Belts may not seem like a vital piece of armor, but the belt is what holds the rest of the pieces together. It is what the sword and shield hang on. Truth is what all the parts of our spiritual armor hang on. It is what holds us and our faith together. We need the Belt of Truth to help us stand firm against Satan's scheme to deceive our minds and seduce our hearts.

The archenemy of personal restoration is shame. Shame causes us to retreat relationally, isolating us from God, and blocking the pipe through which God’s nourishment and restoration flows. A return to knowing and being known by God and others is the only way back to personal restoration.
No one debates whether there is something is wrong with humanity. It’s obvious to everyone. What is less obvious to humanity is the nature of what is wrong and how one goes about fixing it. The bible is clear on both of these points. Listen in as Peter unpacks this reality.
As we experience the reality of living in fallen world, now more than ever, we need to be learning to know God’s Word and how to trust Him completely with our lives.

Today’s passage is quintessential bad news. That is, it tells us what happened that spun the world into chaos and it further sheds light on what happens to each of us every day, namely, the manner in which temptation works to elicit a sinful action from us. Join us as we explore these verses to ascertain how we can, by the Spirit, resist the devices of Satan.
Genesis 3:1-7 What was Mike talking about when he talking about dancing with the devil? How is that a dance with death? For Eve to be considered a ‘vulnerable prey’ - what does that mean? How did Eve negotiate with Satan and why is that a dangerous posture to have with the devil? (v.1-3) When have you tried to negotiate away one of God’s truth’s only to find you in a pain of regret? Explain the difference in living by principle v. by passion. What are the primary passions that Satan has been tempting since the beginning of time? Compare and contrast Genesis 3:6 with 1 John 2:16. Share some practical ways you have learned to resist temptations. How was Adam showing complicity or passivity when Eve was being tempted? What is a better way to walk with someone who is struggling with temptation?

Genesis 3:1-7 Are we born innocent and perfect or are we born with a sinful nature? (Psalm 51:5, Jeremiah 17:9) What facts do you know (or did you learn) about the Serpent in Genesis 3:1? Read Romans 5:12. How does the fall (or failure) of Adam and Eve impact us still today? Read Jeremiah 17:9 and Genesis 3:1. How have our hearts been influenced by the character and conduct of Satan? Mike said: Deception is a LIE posing as TRUTH. Do you agree or disagree? If you disagree, how would you define “deception”? List the 3 deceptive maneuvers of Satan’s scheming. Read Genesis 3:6. Break down the progression of Adam and Eve’s fall. How did sin impact their relationship in verse 7? (compare and contrast 2:25 and 3:7)
Our introduction to Satan in the garden, how he sowed deception and tempted Eve.
Think back through biblical history. We see Israel’s enemies attack constantly, we see Israel’s constant idolatry, unholy sacrifices, rampant disobedience, and often times just general chaos. But God, despite Satan’s constant attacks, did not leave His people to fend for themselves. And though it seemed He had fallen silent, things were happening behind the scenes that no human eye could see or mind comprehend, and God’s eternally wise plan was about to be kicked into the next gear. Jesus’ birth was the demonstration of God launching an all-out war on the Devil and on sin itself. If we see Christmas as a war, then we should look into the manger and see a Warrior. Two historical events where this war has been plainly seen: Genesis 3:1-7 & Matthew 4:1-11. The result of Adam and Eve’s actions in the garden set in motion a series of events – planned by the all-knowing Father – that would include a similar stand-off with the Devil. Jesus came as the warrior King to do battle with the enemy and win a victory that we could never win on our own. The first man battled with Satan and lost, so God sent Jesus to battle with Satan and win. Jesus came to earth to do all of this for us so that when we battle with Satan, we can win too. His victory is our hope in this life and in the one to come. The Gospel message tells us that we are not capable of living the perfect life necessary to be right before God on our own. So we must surrender our own will and our own way for the ways and will of God. So whenever you celebrate, remember that the Christmas story is really a war story, one that was “fought on our turf and for our sake by the hero of the story, the God-man, Jesus" (Paul Tripp) “Hark the Herald Angels Sing”: Come, Desire of nations, come - Fix in us Thy humble throne Rise, the woman’s conquering Seed, bruise in us the serpent’s head Adam’s likeness now erase, stamp Thine image in its place Second Adam from above, reinstate us in Thy love Hark! the herald angels sing "Glory to the new born King"
