Linda's was the final episode for 2018, and what pleasure to have her as a guest. In Linda's words: "Music has been at the center of my life since I can remember. Early influences include Karla Bonoff, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell: many other female singer songwriters since then have shaped my taste in music: Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Emmylou Harris, Mia Borders, Caroline Herring, Susan Cowsill, Lynn Drury, Shannon McNally, Amy Mann and Brandi Carlile. This list is actually pretty endless--I would also have to include the Beatles, the Stones, and the women of the early blues movement, such as Memphis Minnie. I write Americana music, rooted in my life experiences. Many of my songs tell stories, and they are all different; I don't want to write in just one style--I am open to a variety of music, from country to soul. In short, I am a work in progress and I hope you like what you hear. Little Queenie was released on my birthday in 2016, and No Limits, my second album, was released in October of 2017. I am currently writing and recording songs for my next record, due out in the spring of 2019. My style continues to evolve! You can hear my songs here, as well as on Seattle Wave Radio and Local Roots Music NW Radio, available for purchase on CD Baby and BandCamp." A simple but important point is made in this interview as a recurring theme throughout all; music is for everyone and although it helps, no special skills or education are required to enjoy listening to or creating your own. But as seen below, Linda is a bit of an overachiever. EDUCATION-- Writing Fellows Institute, University of Washington, Tacoma; September - June, 2009 Adjunct Faculty Institute, Tacoma Community College; January - March 2006 Summer School for Applied Aesthetics, Lahti Finland; August 18-23, 2002 The School of Criticism and Theory, Cornell University; June 20 - July 26, 2001 The School of Criticism and Theory, Dartmouth College; June 17 - July 26, 1996 Ph. Mississippi College, 1979 And, that doesn't include any of her music background! “If Chrissie Hynde had bolted Akron for Nashville instead of London, her unbuffered emotion and incisive observations might have taken shape something like those of Ms. Blair. The Washington-based singer/songwriter takes on romantic love’s frequent left turns and rude awakenings with straightforward lyrics and vocals to match. “Wild Night”, in particular, evokes the soulfulness of the afore-mentioned Ms. H. Andrea Desmond is an award-winning pop singer/songwriter based in Los Angeles, whose sultry sounds, conscious lyrics, positive attitude and high-energy stage presence radiate pure soul.Andrea received training in songwriting under the guidance of her cousin Alan Menken, the Oscar-winning composer of such Disney classics as Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin. Her new song "Inner Fire", released October 1st, co-written with Natalia Bortolotti (Warner/ Chappell) and produced by SR (Randy Jackson), is inspired by the sounds of Sia, Ellie Goulding and Adele, among others. She recently signed to independent record label Love Harmony Music and to management firm Creative Music Agency.Additionally, Andrea has recently had her music licensed by the Discovery Network, which includes prominent partners such as TLC and the Oprah Winfrey Network. It was also licensed by the PBS Series “RoadTrip Nation” and with Magical Elves, which is known for its production of "Top Chef".Music has always been front and center in Andrea’s life. After receiving a Bachelors in Music degree (with an Emphasis on Composition), she hit the road and became the keyboardist/singer of a cover band playing the California and Nevada casino routes. After years of playing in other people’s bands, and playing other people’s music, she took the bold and courageous leap that all who aspire to follow their heart must do. She launched her solo career and fearlessly ran to her destiny.Andrea moved to Seattle in 2012, where she quickly formed a band and further developed her sound and writing style with producer Martin Feveyear (Presidents of the United States of America, Kings of Leon, Mudhoney), to local acclaim. Myseattlenightout.com called her Seattle's "indie pop sweetheart,” and Seattle Wave Radio noted that "her career is already off to a fast start, and we expect to see a lot more of this amazing young artist." The band made it to the finals in local competitions, participated in radio interviews, and played around the city from the Crocodile to the Showbox. In 2013 Desmond was signed to indie label Spectra Records, where she released the EP Open Spaces, and was nominated for “Best Singer” in the Shorty Awards. Additionally, her song Run won Best Singer/Songwriter for the Akademia Music Awards and first place in the Eco Arts Awards: Songs of Freedom Competition. This led reviewers, such as Music News Nashville to say, “In my mind she is a musical triple threat. She’s got a good look, she can write music/play piano, and she’s a great singer. It’s impressive how well her vocals at times shift from classical to even soulful. This reminds me of Adele, Lily Allen, Jessie J. and Imagine Dragons. Desmond is a captivating composer and singer within her own right.” Looking to further pursue her career, Andrea moved to Los Angeles in 2014, where she began performing frequently at the House of Blues, and ended up connecting with John 'Sly' Wilson, songwriter of Justin Timberlake's Billboard hit "Suit and Tie" for advice on the industry. From being a piano/vocal teacher and songwriting coach, to an assistant to a composer working on an upcoming PBS TV show, she began building a musical foundation within the L.A. area. Most recently she has released her latest single "Inner Fire", which represents a new era for her sound as a pop/top 40 artist. Her debut show for the new song was opening for VIPs of the House of Blues Anaheim at the Regina Spektor Concert. She was also featured in an interview on the single with I HEART RADIO and KISS 107.7 FM.Upon the release of "Inner Fire", articles have been written on NBC News, ABC News, Digital Journal, Skope Entertainment, The Fresh Committee Blog, Populove Magazine, Vents Magazine, EDM Sauce, Indie Reviews (featured artist), The Cool Noise (featured artist), Industry Reviewz (featured artist), and Kurrent Music, among many other publications. Andrea is currently recording new material with her producer and continually writing with her team. When one hears Andrea for the first time, it takes the listener from despair and delivers them to a culture of hope. Her music, along with a sweet and compassionate smile, combined with her angelic voice, reminds the listener of good times while taking them to another dimension.Or simply, as Indie Shark Reviews acclaims, “She seems a likeable, genuine, and all around kindhearted person. Truly a band of brothers, they have become a unifying force among music fans from a diverse set of genres. The members of Northern Shakedown have been playing together from a very young age. As brothers, Ben (drums) and Tyler (guitar/vocals) started their musical journeys in grade school, playing in school bands, choirs, and at their home church where their father pastored. Jabreel (keys/vocals) and Solomon (bass guitar), also brothers, began attending and playing music at the same church during middle school and the four became close friends.  Over 10 years later, they are as tight as ever and have channeled their passion toward the creation of heartfelt original music featuring a well-rounded display of energetic hip-hop and dance, focused rhythm, and soulful melodies. https://www.facebook.com/NorthernShakedown/timeline

Isaiah Dominguez: With an iPhone full of audio memos, a new mentality, and a different city of unfamiliar views, Seattle-based singer/songwriter he returns with a batch of his most honest and thoughtful songs to date. Isaiah has been adamant about representing his hometown of Olympia, no matter where life takes him and his music reflects it. His style, a unique blend of folk and pop/rock, has developed and evolved over the years through various influences. His previous music endeavors reflect this statement; Dominguez fronted the pop/punk band, Take Me Instead, for several years, playing with the likes of The Story So Far, Shoreline Drive, and Dylan Jakobson, before disbanding 2012 and launching into an era of self-discovery. The band’s breakup was bittersweet, Dominguez said. This week’s episode features interesting conversation and music from a couple of brilliant Northwest acts. First, there’s the dynamic duo of Impossible Bird, consisting of Nick Drummond on guitar and vocals and Tyler Carson on fiddle. Drummond’s beautiful tenor, coupled with Carson’s sonically exquisite violin, create incredible soundscapes. After their wonderful performance at Northwest LoveFest, they talked about their music, their influences, and how they came up with their unique sound and name. Impossible Bird will be performing Thursday, October 4th, at the Oliver Franklin CD Release Show at OM Culture, as well as October 6th and 7th at the Seattle Fusion Festival. Eclectic Approach had a huge week. They performed in front of a national television audience this past Monday (10/1) on Jimmy Kimmel Live. This Seattle outfit fuses funk, pop, rock, and hip hop to create a very musically diverse musical stew. The group’s frontman Jowed Hadeed and guitarist Ryan Jander discuss their unique, fun, and funky sound. Jordan Dettmer from Protosong.com also stops by. Protosong brings music fans an exclusive playlist of unreleased songs from stellar independent Seattle artists over a two week period – and it’s for an equally stellar cause. Jordan tells how the project came about, who is involved, and the impact they hope to make. Get more details at the link below.

In 1979, former Mott The Hoople frontman, Ian Hunter, released the critically acclaimed LP, You’re Never Alone with a Schizophrenic. One of the peppiest and snappiest tracks on the record was an ode to the current home of the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame, Cleveland, and legendary rock n’ roll Hall of Famer and DJ, Alan Freed. Cleveland Rocks eventually became the theme song for the very popular sitcom, The Drew Carey Show. The version that appeared at the beginning of the show was performed by Seattle’s own Presidents of The United States of America, fronted by Chris Ballew. In 2008, Drew Carey became part owner of the Seattle’s Sounders Football Club, and regularly travels to Seattle for matches. This makes a very unique Seattle music trifecta indeed. This week’s episode features two-thirds of this unique trio, connected through the power of music and soccer, starting with Ian Hunter. Ian was recently in town to play Bumbershot 2012. He, along with his Rant Band, put on a brilliant twilight performance under the Space Needle. (See Photo Slideshow below.) He talks about everything from working with David Bowie, his love of American Rock n Roll and historical pop icons, as well as a special benefit show he’s working on in Cleveland. Check out the classic Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter tracks, as well as his new single, When I’m President. (Hmm… perhaps another indirect tie in to Chris or probably just pure irony!) Next, there’s Chris Ballew. I caught up with him this past summer at Northwest LoveFest, where he was performing as Casper Babypants. Some would say that his newest project has surpassed the popularity of The Presidents. (At least his target audience of toddlers and young children think so.) Chris and I talked about the distinctions of performing with POTUSA vs. Casper Babypants – and he hear some classic POTUSA tracks.
