Send us a textThis week the Portland-based duo, Wonderly stopped by to discuss their latest album Wolves/ We also talked about the Low Bar Chorale, A new German Opera, and so much more.********Wolves is the culmination of a creative partnership that dates back to 2016. Brunberg and Landsverk debuted Wonderly with a self-titled 2017 collection; the unit continued with the post-pandemic release Story We Tell in 2022 and the covers collection Appropriate 'til Death in 2023. Their film scores have been featured on the soundtracks for the independent films Last Ferry, At the Video Store and other independent features, while their music has been heard as the aforementioned theme song of the New York Times' podcast The Daily and writer Cheryl Strayed's Dear Sugar, as well as on Brunberg's award-winning podcast Roam Schooled.Jim Brunberg was a touring song and dance man for 12 years with the hugely successful rock/harmony/acoustic duo (and sometimes quintet) Box Set, touring with acts ranging from Dave Matthews to Huey Lewis, through the 90s. In 2000, Jim opened a recording studio, turning to the recording and composing world to satisfy his constant hunger for music. He produced and engineered dozens of records for many artists (Storm Large, Kristin Hersh, John Wesley Harding, and countless Portland-based bands) and released a few solo albums before converting the studios into a world-class music venue (Mississippi Studios). This spawned a few larger venues (Revolution Hall and Polaris Hall) where Jim personally built the stages, much of the seating and decor of a family of venues he still co-owns with his business partner Kevin Cradock. Currently, Jim is writing and recording/producing a tragic/comic German Opera, working with some of the classical musicians he has met over the past several years (mostly Oregon Symphony players). The work, "Das Blut" is a satirical, full-fledged production, entirely in German, that takes aim at the rise of a tyrant. It is a nuanced, but completely insurgent take on empathy, power, where our demons come from, and what they eat for dinner. He plans to debut this work, along with a new batch of songs, in 2025.Ben Landsverk is an American composer, singer, and multi-instrumentalist, based in Portland, OR, whose work focuses on social change through music. Hailed as a “prominent Portland composer” (Bloomberg Magazine) and “a unique musical talent” (Willamette Week), he is best known for his work as one half of the duo Wonderly, with musical partner Jim Brunberg. An active session musician, Landsverk has worked with such musical luminaries as Father John Misty, Pink Martini, Smokey Robinson, Van Dyke Parks, Storm Large, and Ruby Friedman Orchestra. From 2003-2015, he was a collaborator and music director with avant-garde performance artist Holcombe Waller and performed at such festivals as Under The Radar (NYC), Festival de Teatro de Curitiba (Brazil), Queer Zagreb (Croatia), Brooklyn Academy of Music (NYC), and Centre Pompidou (Metz and Paris, France).  Landsverk is the founder and director of Portland's Low Bar Chorale and of Voices Unlimited, Portland's flagship choir for people with neurodiversity. He spent over 20 years as a professional choral director and singer, specializing in medieval, renaissance, and baroque music. Landsverk is currently working on his first solo album, scheduled for release in early 2025. *******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comFollow us on SocSupport the show

Welcome back to another installment of our favorite bibliophilic game, You Want Me to Read WHAT? The rules are simple: Julie, Eve, and a guest assign each other off-the-beaten path books and then gather to talk about them! This time around, Julie picked the Japanese thriller Seventeen by author Hideo Yokoyama for guest Marc Acito; Marc picked Colette's feminist novella Gigi (which Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe turned into an anti-feminist musical–remember the 1958 movie that starred Leslie Caron, Louis Jordan, and Maurice Chevalier?) for Eve; and for Julie, Eve picked E. B. White's classic ode to New York City, Here is New York, which opens, unforgettably: “On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy.” … So stay tuned to find out whether these books are keepers or never-repeaters! Marc Acito writes and directs musicals, including the upcoming film Mad Woman, starring and featuring the music of Storm Large. He also writes about musicals, including his thinly-veiled, autobiographical novel, How I Paid for College. And Marc is also a treasured former guest of Book Dreams from Episode 23, “Test-driving the A.I. That Claims to Predict & Help Create Bestsellers.” Find us on Twitter (@bookdreamspod) and Instagram (@bookdreamspodcast), or email us at contact@bookdreamspodcast.com. While America's Got Talent (AGT): Season 16 is on its Summer Olympics hiatus, the Jake's Take AGT Season 16 special podcast series continues! This week, I welcomed singer, musician, and actor Storm Large to the podcast.Storm has spent her entire career performing. She spent the 1990s singing in clubs throughout the San Francisco area. Eventually, she moved to Portland to pursue a career as a chef, but in 2002, a last-minute cancellation at Dante's changed her career. That last-minute cancellation turned into a Wednesday night engagement where Storm and her band, the Balls, entertained countless audiences. In 2006, Storm rose to national prominence when she competed on the CBS music competition Rock Star: Supernova. Despite being eliminated one week before the finale, Storm gained an international fan base. She had the opportunity to perform at iconic venues such as the John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and Carnegie Hall. Also, Storm sang with a diverse group of recording artists such as k.d. Lang, Rufus Wainwright, Pink Martini, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton. Recently, Storm Large auditioned for America's Got Talent: Season 16. Her remarkable rendition of the classic song “I've Got You Under My Skin” received four “Yeses” from judges Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Heidi Klum. Also, her performance has been viewed on the show's official YouTube channel over 3.1 million times. In this edition of Jake's Take's AGT Season 16 Special, Storm Large revisited her audition and talked about how her experience on Rock Star: Supernova prepared for the NBC talent competition.

Entertainers were hit particularly hard during the pandemic. If you make your living in front of people, your income and your profession were put on hold. Storm Large dealt with the isolation and loneliness of the pandemic with honesty, vulnerability and a difficult question, "If I'm not performing in front of thousands of people, who am I?"  The answer revealed itself in the form of live-streamed pajama sessions, honest conversations with others about their mental health and well-being, and the spark of genius that keeps us coming back for more, more, more from Ms. Large

If you’re a feminist like me, you’re reeling from the news of liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg passing away on Friday. This episode with Marie Cecile Anderson and Katy Frame, Reformed Whores, will be a balm to your soul.If Dolly Parton & Flight of the Conchords got drunk and had a baby, you'd get the hilariously irreverent musical comedy duo Reformed Whores! They’re on a mission to empower, normalize the female experience, and bust a few guts in the process! Not only do they have beautiful harmonies and a country twang, but they also are hilarious as well as educational. They are cohosts of the Difficult Women podcast, which is a fantastic combination of current affairs, feminism, social justice, and funny, irreverent conversation—plus a lovely blend of women’s friendship. The first time I saw Reformed Whores was in 2012, after Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a slut and a prostitute, merely for advocating for contraception. Their song, “Rush Limbaugh Calls Sandra Fluke a Slut,” will have you singing along, “I’m a slut, slut, slut, I’m an S-L-U-T, S-L-U-T, slut!” I immediately became a fan and have followed their irreverent, bawdy, harmonious form of comedy and music ever since. Fate brought Marie and Katy together when they “fell ass backwards” into forming Reformed Whores. Ten years ago they randomly met at a mutual friend’s birthday party in Brooklyn when they talked the whole evening. And they started the band one week later! Working together for 10 years, they consider themselves as soulmates. That’s evident when you listen to them together in this podcast episode, onstage, in their videos, or on their podcast. Marie was trying to prove to her overprotective father that she could be a full woman without having a boyfriend or be horny like a man, pushing against the stereotype of what a southern woman is supposed to look like. She never fit into the category of a typical southern woman, even though she didn’t realize she was actually a feminist until about 10-15 years ago. Now she’s very proud to call herself a feminist. When they started a bawdy band singing about sex and body positivity, they had to adjust to upsetting their parents. It’s been hard for their parents to hear their daughters talk about sex in such a brazen, open way. When Marie’s mom first saw one of her videos, about giving hand jobs for Lent, her mom told her she was disappointed in her. However, Marie also shared a story about her parents coming to see Reformed Whores in concert. When they sang their song “Mama,” Marie’s mom proudly claimed the title of Mama.We talked about straddling traditional country venues and feminist, sex-positive messaging; their favorite songs; the future of theater; performing in Sturgis, SD; their podcast and important conversations; working in the male-dominated fields of comedy and music; being labeled as "difficult women"; the new Netflix movie "Cutie"; Storm Large; The Guilty Feminist; and Black Lives Matter.

She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. Storm joins us to talk about growing up with a severely mentally disturbed mother and the message she received from her mother's doctor, "Oh yeah, you will absolutely end up like your Mother. It's hereditary." But, this conversation is not about Storm's efforts to outrun a diagnosis, it's an artist's journey back to herself. Storm's autobiographical musical memoir, Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in 2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold-out run in Portland. She's back for the ten-year reunion stronger, wiser, and larger in spirit than ever before. (Don't miss the after the show conversation about cancel culture and what really goes on in therapy.)

This week's show is with Isis Leeor. Isis is responsible for a movement of whole, ripe, and unapologetic women who are finally coming out of the closet. For 15 years, she has been passionately teaching people (women and men) how to connect both hearts, the one in their chest and the one in their pelvis. Isis has been featured in a myriad newspapers and radio shows alongside people like Storm Large, Dan Savage, Deborah Anapol and Sark. She is a counselor with an extensive background in Body Psychotherapy, Tantra, Hypnotherapy. Basically she does some kick ass embodied work online and in person, through workshops, intensives and private sessions. She is currently working on her book entitled “Feral Female.” In addition to a lot of official studies, Isis has also howled at the moon, been saved by Qi-gong, taken drugs with a therapist, smoked a peace pipe, flipped off a Shaman, learned and unlearned emotionally responsible language, danced with her shirt off in public, avoided marrying an Essene guru, and worn cocktail dresses all over the world while going commando. In this conversation, Isis and I explored 'the idea of other women as home'. How our cultural and personal wounds get in the way of connecting deeply and openly with other women, how we compete instead of connect, and how we can heal and learn to be with other women in a way that allows us to see and enjoy each other's unique beauty and feel safe in that experience.

Don Horn and Kevin Loomis talk about the world premiere of That's No Lady! at Triangle Productions, a new musical chronicling the fantastic life of Portland's own Darcelle. Chances are you know Darcelle, also known as Walter Cole. Donnie has been working on telling the story of this man, who at the age of 37 became a drag sensation before it was ‘popular’. “How did a man put on a dress, sell a ticket, and stay in business for over 50 years? He’s been in business longer than Starbucks!” Kevin plays Darcelle in the show, with book and original song (with lyrics) by donnie, and additional lyrics and music by Tom Grant, Marv/Rindy Ross, Jon Quesenberry, Storm Large, Rody Ortega, Wesley Bowers. This will be a thrilling world premiere at triangle productions!

Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome.

Will God still love me if I’m a heathen sinner? This week, Sister Penny Costal of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence tells her true story of forbidden love in the deep South. This week Art and Susan welcome Walter Cole/Darcelle XV! With the help of our friend and Portland luminary Helen Raptis from KATU, we were excited to interview the legendary Darcelle XV, the Oldest Working Drag Queen in the World. Darcelle has been a Portland icon for over 50 years and is being honored with a musical (That's No Lady) opening Sep 19 at PSU's Lincoln Hall, featuring music by Storm Large, Tom Grant, and Marv and Rindy Ross among others. She is also the subject of a book entitiled Darcelle - Looking From My Mirror with a forward by Matt Groenig also scheduled for a Sep 19 release. What a fascinating life. Wonderful stories and such a kind heart, Darcelle has supported the LGBTQ community for decades, speaking in schools about tolerance and staying true to yourself. This was an amazing hour and we feel honored to have had this chance. And we feel super grateful that Helen was willing to join us for this memorable interview. When #TravelJunkie Cerulean journeys to Seattle for a friend’s same sex wedding, her modest budget means a shared room at the Green Tortoise Hostel near the infamous Pike Place Market. A reservation error has somehow turned her woman’s room booking into a coed dorm – but she’s extra OK with it when handsome yoga rockstar Scott walks in. They end up canoodling over a globe and a few beers on a hostel-organized pub crawl, nerding out on World Travel. Scott ends her multi-year dry spell with a life lesson on sex and pleasure – and leaves her with new self-knowledge that will stay with her forever.    Song: ‘Fancy Things’ by The Weepies   Hosted by Sexual Folklorist Dixie De La Tour  Opening Music: 8 Miles Wide by Storm Large    Love Bawdy Storytelling? This week's show is with Isis Leeor. Isis is responsible for a movement of whole, ripe, and unapologetic women who are finally coming out of the closet. For 15 years, she has been passionately teaching people (women and men) how to connect both hearts, the one in their chest and the one in their pelvis. Isis Leoor has been featured in a myriad newspapers and radio shows alongside people like Storm Large, Dan Savage, Deborah Anapol and Sark. In this conversation, Isis and I explored the glorious topic of becoming a feral female! Isis shared her own story of going from numb to feral and then we talked about the reasons this is an enquiry that's relevant to almost all women in today's world. I hope you feel Isis's living invitation in this show and are able to respond to it in how you live your own beautiful life.

We had Ryan in the studio to start off a multi-part series, The Road to Broadway: From Commission to the Tony’s that will document the ups and downs of producing a show all the way from its infancy to hopefully award season. In this first part, we are introduced to Ryan, a Chicago native who has wanted to produce since age 10. And of course we get introduced to his show, currently titled: EVERLEIGH CLUB, music and lyrics by James Beaton and Storm Large, book by Rinne Groff.
