What the Riff?!?
1988 - January: Sting "...Nothing Like the Sun"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 31, 2025 43:09

Nothing Like the Sun, or as it is written on the album, "...Nothing Like the Sun,"  is the second solo studio album by former Police bassist and front man Sting.  The title comes from Shakespeare's sonnet number 130 which contains the lines, "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun."  Sting was met on the street one evening, who asked him, "How beautiful is the moon?"  Sting responded with this line from the sonnet.  Two events play a lot of influence on this album.  First, Sting's mother died in 1986, inspiring the lyrics to the opening track, "Lazarus Heart."  Second Sting joined the Conspiracy of Hope tour for Amnesty International, and through this tour was exposed to victims of government oppression in Latin America.  He was particularly moved by people in Chile for whom loved ones had "disappeared" in government actions, and wrote "They Dance Alone" as a description of the mourners who would dance the traditional Cueca by themselves with a picture of their loved ones pinned to their clothes.Sting's first solo album leaned into jazz.  This second album continues to have a jazz influence but reaches across a number of other genres including reggae, funk, acoustic rock, soft rock, and world music.  He brought in a number of solid musicians into the recording sessions including Gil Evans, Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Branford Marsalis, and even his fellow Police alumnus Andy SummersSting would continue to further success after this album, which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard 200 chart.  In the UK, ...Nothing Like the Sun debuted and peaked at number 1 on the UK albums chart.Bruce presents this adult contemporary album for this week's podcast. Be Still My Beating HeartThis second single from the album went to number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The lyrics are quite mature, describing the head telling the heart to settle down in the midst of an intense romance.  The title was likely inspired by a 19th Century poem from Mary Elizabeth Coleridge.  Andy Summers is playing guitar on this track.  Little WingMost of this album is original music written by Sting, but this one is a deeper cut and a cover.  Jimi Hendrix wrote "Little Wing" in 1967, and it appears on his "Axis" album.  Gil Evans did a jazz arrangement of this piece in 1974, and provided this arrangement and backing with his orchestra for this cover.  Sting's version runs just over 5 minutes, giving it a run time just over double that of the original Hendrix version.  Rock SteadyAnother deep cut, this song is Stings humorous look at a couple who have volunteered to join a cruise, and later find out that they are joining Noah on the Ark.  "Life may be tough, but we're sailing with the Lord."  FragileThis is the fourth single from the album, and is a gorgeous acoustic piece.  This anti-war song was likely inspired by Sting's work with Amnesty International. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That's Amore by Dean Martin (from the motion picture “Moonstruck”) This romance comedy starring Cher and Nicolas Cage delivered a Best Actress Oscar to Cher and a Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Olympia Dukakis.  STAFF PICKS:The Promise by When In RomeRob starts this week's staff picks with the only hit from a British new wave trio.  This track went to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became a popular song to play at weddings later on.  It gained a revival in popularity when it was used in the soundtrack to "Napoleon Dynamite" in 2004.  Got My Mind Set On You by George HarrisonLynch brings us a cover of a song originally written by Rudy Clark and recorded by James Ray in 1962.  It is off Harrison's comeback album, "Cloud Nine."  Harrison worked with Jeff Lynne on the album because he wanted a producer who wouldn't be intimidated by working with a Beatle.  The teamwork went well, and the two would go on to form "The Traveling Wilburys" supergroup shortly thereafter.Dude (Looks Like a Lady) by AerosmithWayne features one of many hits from Aerosmith's monster "Permanent Vacation" album.  The lyrics tell the tale of a man finding out that the "girl" he has bee pursuing at a club was a man dressed up as a woman.  The idea for the song came from Motley Crue singer Vince Neil being mistaken frequently for a woman with long blonde hair.Mission by RushBruce closes out the staff picks with a song which arose from a conversation between Neal Peart and Geddy Lee about the perception people have that the rich and famous have easier lives.  The lyrics reflect how every life has its own difficulties, and perhaps those who are highly successful would often wish for a more plain and settled life at times.   INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Bailando/Aquatic Park by Carlos SantanaGuitar virtuoso Carlos Santana takes us out this week with a track from his solo album, "Blues for Salvador." This is a very special episode that we have for you this week, because for the first time in six years, Pearl Jam finally returned home to play a show in Seattle. Not only that, but it was both Randy and Javier's first time witnessing a show in their hometown. It was a week of celebration as the city featured so many fun events in connection with the band, and what made it memorable on our part is that we had such a great group of friends to experience it with. From visiting Seattle grunge landmarks, to signing massive flags and pre-gaming at local bars, this is one of our favorite traveling experiences. Which is why we have invited our group of friends who all stayed together at a BNB in striking distance to Climate Pledge Arena on this episode to talk about how meaningful it was to all of us. While the six person conversation will certainly take up a healthy chunk of the episode, we will dig deep into this awesome show from last year. There are special moments featured here that a year later we look back on very fondly. The last five songs in the main set - Upper Hand, Waiting For Stevie, Man Of The Hour, Satan's Bed and Rearviewmirror displayed perhaps one of the best set runs that Pearl Jam had in all of 2024. We'll spend a lot of time on Man Of The Hour, which was already a highly emotional moment due to the tribute to the late Bill Walton, but was also incredibly important to the hosts from this night. While the end of the main set was killer, the end of the encore has tons of talking points as well with a modified rendition of All Along The Watchtower, the first appearance of Yellow Wing (a mashup of Ledbetter and Little Wing) as well as one of the final times to date that Setting Sun has closed a show. For all of you old school Live On 4 Legs fans, this will take you back to older episodes as the total run time on this exceeds two hours, but there's no lack of stories and celebration for a show that certainly deserves it's flowers! Horse Thief Hollow Brewing Co's Jake Nelson (Head Brewer) and Adrian Morrison (Brewer and Sales Manager) discuss the fascinating legacy of Horse Thief Hollow Brewing in Chicago's historic Beverly neighborhood, exploring the origins of the brewery's name, its cultural significance, and why the Illinois militia had to run off horse thieves in the very early days of Chicago. They also share their humble beer origin stories, including Andrian's rising through the ranks in order to get to where he is at Horse Thief Hollow. They also talk about what “cellar work” actually means when working in beer before they discuss how Horse Thief Hollow Brewing Co. has become the most award-winning brewery on Chicago's south side, including a deep dive into how they overcame the challenge of brewing high-quality Pilsners consistently in order to come up with their award-winning Little Wing Pilsner.  After the beer break, they discuss Annexation, a West Coast IPA, including an explanation of what makes an IPA a West Coast IPA specifically and why West Coast IPAs are making a comeback. Jake also talks about when a beer is “done” and he doesn't feel like he needs to keep changing a recipe. Narada Michael Walden Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wow! I've seen hundreds of photos, loads of videos - I've never seen Narada Michael Walden in an orange bowler. When was the last time I wore orange? InSync! From the first moment to the last, what a glorious, grateful, exuberant lovefest. Narada is as passionate, fun, inviting, and accessible as his music. We talked about his first paper drumkit at 5, how he watched, listened, and learned from his heroes. How the soul sounds of Detroit shaped him, how it's all soul sounds. From his first band at 11 to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, which would change his life in all ways… adding prayer. mediation, service, and Narada to his name, gifted by his guru, Sri Chinmoy, thanks to John McLaughlin, and of course, the music, following in Billy Cobham's big footsteps, touring with Jeff Beck, then recording Wired with him, writing “material” for the album, the full circle back to Beck a decade ago and the story behind their masterpiece version of Little Wing. Ah me! How playing transitioned to producing, inspired by Quincy Jones to service other artists, and the superstar women he championed to great heights - Aretha with their Grammy Song of The Year, Freeway of Love, Whitney with their 6 number one hits including their Grammy Winning Album of the Year, Mariah, with musical knowledge to match her musical chops. We talked our friend, Allee Willis, Keith Moon, Ringo, Jaco, Carlos, Sting, Trudy, Stevie, Marvin, Cissy, his last tour with Journey, and how his devotion to his wife and children brought him home. This very morning Narada was up at 6 readying his kids for school and then driving them there. This interview was held early so that he'd be home when they got home. Quite a man. Respect. For a taste of what Narada himself is up to musically, check out his The More I Love My Life https://bfan.link/the-more-i-love-my-life with Sting, Carlos, and Stevie, I can't stop listening! It seems to so sum up this man of grace. And while you're at it, watch this - and tear yourself away, if you can! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u9UQbf_VoQI Perfection! Jeff, Narada, and Rhonda, do Jimi proud. This is a man as comfortable with pop, soul, funk, rock, and blues as he is with fusion. Brilliant with them all. Loving and appreciating them all, and, as his audience, I'll gratefully follow him to any of them. I loved every second in Narada's most excellent company. Grateful girl! As a result of his defiance, Swan was murdered, and his harvested body parts were used for DNA evidence to frame him as the designated fall guy. Neagley and Lavoy's security team successfully break Reacher out of the New Age Facility, allowing him to board Langston's helicopter. Reacher kills the remaining bodyguard and, as promised, tosses Langston out of the helicopter, freeing O'Donnell and Dixon. The team then heads to the New Age engineer's house to ambush and kill A.M. Anticipating that Lavoy's security team was going to assassinate the investigators as the last remaining loose ends, Homeland Security agents arrest Lavoy and the security team after receiving a tip from Reacher prior to his rescue mission. The investigators kill the two remaining New Age employees for their part in the conspiracy by using a Little Wing missile on Langston's helicopter, with the crash covered up by Homeland Security. Cate accosts Tim when he arrives at the airport and asks him to help locate May. Tim, Cate, and Kentaro find May's family in Tacoma, Washington, and learn about her past from her sister, Lyra. They trigger a false Titan alert to rescue May from AET, but she chooses not to spy on Monarch and stay behind. Meanwhile, back in Denver, AM kills a plastic surgeon in an attempt to steal his identity before flying to New York. The team tracks the senator to Boston, where Dixon helps Oscar Finlay arrest the senator's aide to coerce information out of him. The aide reveals to Reacher and O'Donnell that Little Wing is a missile program designed to enable terrorist attacks, and is being held at their facilities in Denver and New York. Later that night, the team is ambushed by a biker gang, but manages to kill them. Jam Notes: It's the Christmas Episode. And we played more than 30 different songs that night. Some of them are Gato classics. Others were not so well rehearsed or practiced. Ben also missed recording a fair bit of the show. This is only one and a half of three sets that were played. We will be posting the mix we got from the house sound as well. Gato Maestro at Nash Street Tavern. This is the same evening as the other Nash Street recording on Dec 9. This one was recorded by the local sound engineer Rainbow, who runs multiple mixes at the same time. The vocals are a lot easier to hear on these, as is every single little mistake. Note that this is the Christmas episode, meaning there are some unusual things on this recording. Also we ran out of CD space, as we often do, and so the last take of Lean on Me into 1-2-3 is cut short.

But there are four types of electric guitar that are a bit more widely used than other ones. On this formely-bonus-now-main-feed episode, Kirk discusses those four guitars—the Fender Stratocaster, the Telecaster, the Gibson Les Paul, and the 335—and goes through some of the Strong Songs that have featured them.FEATURED/DISCUSSED:“Spanish Castle Magic" and "Little Wing" by Jimi Hendrix from Axis: Bold as Love, 1967“Like a Prayer” by Madonna from Like a Prayer, 1989“Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd from Second Helping, 1973“Home” by Cory Wong from Motivational Music for the Syncopated Soul, 2019"Time" by Pink Floyd from The Dark Side of the Moon, 1973"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" by Tears for Fears from Songs From The Big Chair, 1985“Folsom Prison Blues" by Johnny Cash, 1955"Make a Mistake With Me" by Brad Paisley from Mud on the Tires, 2003“Paranoid Android” by Radiohead from OK Computer, 1997“Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin from Led Zeppelin IV, 1971“Kiss” by Prince from Parade, 1986“Last Goodbye” by Jeff Buckley from Grace, 1994“Blood and Thunder” by Mastodon from Leviathan, 2004“Immigrant Song” from Led Zeppelin III, 1970“Mr. Blue Sky” by Electric Light Orchestra from Out of the Blue, 1978“Wuthering Heights” by Kate Bush from The Kick Inside, 1978“Starman” by David Bowie from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, 1972“November Rain” by Guns N' Roses from Use Your Illusion, 1991"Sister Sadie" by Horace Silver, 1959“Help Me” by Joni Mitchell from Court & Spark, 1974“Kid Charlemagne” by Steely Dan from The Royal Scam, 1976“September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, 1978“No One Knows” by Queens of the Stone Age from Songs for the Deaf, 2004-----LINKS-----SUPPORT STRONG SONGSPaypal | Patreon.com/StrongsongsMERCH STOREstore.strongsongspodcast.comSOCIAL MEDIA@StrongSongs | @Kirkhamilton | IG: @Kirk_HamiltonNEWSLETTERhttps://kirkhamilton.substack.com/subscribeJOIN THE DISCORDhttps://discord.gg/GCvKqAM8SmOUTRO SOLO PLAY-A-LONG:https://soundcloud.com/kirkhamilton/strong-songs-outro-music-no-soloSTRONG SONGS PLAYLISTSSpotify | Apple Music | YouTube Music----------------SEPTEMBER 2023 WHOLE-NOTE PATRONSBen BarronCatherine WarnerDamon WhiteKaya WoodallDan AustinJay SwartzMiriam JoySEAN D WINNIERushDaniel Hannon-BarryAshley HoagChristopher MillerJamie WhiteChristopher McConnellDavid MascettiJoe LaskaKen HirshJezMelanie AndrichJenness GardnerJeanneret Manning Family FourDave SharpeSami SamhuriJeremy DawsonAccessViolationRyan TorvikElliot Jay O'NeillAndre BremerDave FloreySEPTEMBER 2023 HALF-NOTE PATRONSAbraham BenrubiChristopher BrunoChris KotarbaCallum WebbLynda MacNeilDick MorganBen SteinSusan GreenSean MurphyJake YumatillaAlan BroughRandal VegterGo Birds!Whit SidenerRobert Granatdave malloyNick GallowayHeather Johnsonjohn halpinPeter HardingDavidMeghan O'LearyJohn BaumanDax and Dane HuddlestonMartín SalíasTim HowesStu BakerSteve MartinoDr Arthur A GrayCarolinaGary PierceMatt BaxterGiantPredatoryMolluskLuigi BocciaE Margaret WartonCharles McGeeCatherine ClauseEthan BaumanKenIsWearingAHatJordan BlockAaron WadeJamieDeebsPortland Eye CareCarrie SchneiderRichard SneddonJulian RoleffDoreen CarlsonDavid McDarbyWendy GilchristElliot RosenLisa TurnerPaul WayperBruno GaetaKenneth JungAdam StofskyZak RemerRishi SahayAilie FraserVonRob TsukNATALIE MISTILISJosh SingerPhino DeLeonAmy Lynn ThornsenAdam WKelli BrockingtonVictoria YuBrad Clarkmino caposselaSteve PaquinEmma SklarBernard KhooRobert HeuerMatthew GoldenDavid NoahGeraldine ButlerMadeleine MaderJason PrattAbbie BergDoug BelewDermot CrowleyAchint SrivastavaRyan RairighMichael BermanOlivia BishopJohn GisselquistLinda DuffyLiz SegerEoin de BurcaKevin PotterM Shane BordersDallas HockleyJason GerryNathan GouwensLauren ReayEric PrestemonCookies250Damian BradyAngela LivingstoneSarah SulanDiane HughesMichael CasnerLowell MeyerStephen TsoneffWenJack SjogrenGeoff GoldenRobyn FraserPascal RuegerRandy SouzaClare HolbertonDiane TurnerTom ColemanMark PerryDhu WikMelEric HelmJonathan DanielsMichael FlahertyJarrod SchindlerCaro Fieldmichael bochnerNaomi WatsonDavid CushmanAlexanderGavin DoigSam FennTanner MortonAJ SchusterJennifer BushDavid StroudAmanda FurlottiAndrew BakerJules BaileyAndrew FairL.B. DIG THIS PRESENTS "THE JIMI HENDRIX PROJECT" - PART TWO- "ANGEL" - A DEMO RECORDED IN A NYC HOTEL ROOM ON FEBRUARY 6, 1968 - THE OFFICIAL VERSION WAS RELEASED POSTHUMOUSLY ON THE 1971 ALBUM "A CRY OF LOVE"

It can be assumed that Hendrix wrote the music for "Angel" as early as 1967, as it first appeared in the form of a demo with the title "Little Wing".The song became "Angel" not long after this, when the first recording under the name "Sweet Angel" took place just one month later. The lyrics for "Angel" were written early in 1968,  being completed on January 14. They were somewhat different from those used on the final version, though similar to the "Sweet Angel" recording of 1967. The title written by Hendrix for the lyrics was "My Angel Catherina (Return of Little Wing)", suggesting that the metaphorical female subject of "Little Wing" is the same as that of "Angel".The next version of "Angel" was recorded by Hendrix alone, on guitar and vocals, in a hotel room in early February, 1968. After apparently leaving the song for over two years, Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell and Billy Cox recorded the final version of "Angel" on July 23, 1970.[A few days after the session, Hendrix recited the song as a piece of poetry to friend Freddie Mae Gautier during a conversation about his mother Lucille. In an interview for Electric Gypsy.Jimi imparted the inspiration behind the song to Mae by detailing a dream he had about Lucille:"My mother was bein' carried away on this camel. And there was a big caravan, she's sayin', 'Well, I'm gonna see you now,' and she's goin' under these trees, you could see the shade, you know, the leaf patterns across her face when she was goin' under ... She's sayin', 'Well, I won't be seein' you too much anymore, you know. I'll see you.' And then about two years after that she dies, you know. And I said, 'Yeah, but where are you goin'?' and all that, you know. I remember that. I will always remember that. I never did forget ... there are some dreams you never forget."Mae described "Angel" as "very deep.  "It was what was in him" she stated."Angel" was mixed for Hendrix's First Rays of the New Rising Sun project over August 20 and 21, 1970  which included the overdubbing of a second guitar part. When Hendrix passed away, Mae took it upon herself to read the poem — as well as Hendrix's liner notes to the Buddy Miles Express album Expressway to Your Skull — at the musician's funeral on October 1, 1970.

This week we continue our deep dive into Night Demon's new album, Outsider, by peeling back the curtain on the creative process underlying track 7, "A Wake."  You will hear the genesis of the song in early riff tapes, and the pressure-packed circumstances under which the band rediscovered those riffs late in the Outsider writing sessions.  The guys explain the necessity of not overplaying their parts, talk about the shimmering vocal harmonies, and lead you through the epic guitar solo at the end.  You will also learn the thematic importance of "A Wake" to the narrative, and its significance to telling a story of consequence.  The episode concludes with a recent live version of the track, and the band's reflections on its similarities to and differences from fan favorite "Darkness Remains."Night Demon "A Wake" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLZFoRzyyhEScorpions "Always Somewhere" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AepjLbcLrJEJimi Hendrix "Little Wing" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkEPBiMbgxsBlack Sabbath "Fairies Wear Boots" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkEPBiMbgxsMetallica "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_HSa1dEL9sNight Demon 'Outsider' ordering info - https://nightdemon.bandcamp.com/ Listen at nightdemon.net/podcast or anywhere you listen to podcasts!
