For over ten years he ran a West End theatre in London's Leicester Square (home to the Boy George musical “TABOO”) as well as a successful Ballroom and Latin Dancing Club. He produced a triple platinum selling album for the Japanese band 'Buck Tick'; co-produced the UK Eurovision entry in 2001 for Lindsay Dracass and toured the UK and Europe with Phil Collins as one of 'Mike and the Mechanics', becoming their vocal arranger on the 'Rewired' album. He returned to live performance in 2009 with the Scottish Supergroup 'Four Good Men' and as lead vocalist for XSM ( Ex Simple Mind ) which featured original members Derek Forbes and Brian McGee. In January 2014 Owen released “The One” his first official single in the UK since 1987, following this with the release of the album “About Time II” in the autumn of the same year. November 2016 brought the release of two brand new versions of My Favourite Waste of Time (Part One and Part Two) to celebrate its 30th Anniversary, plus a multitude of dance remixes. He has released 11 tracks since 2020 including the Heritage Chart number 1 'Beauty of the Sun' and a Lockdown chorus version of My Favourite Waste of Time which featured guest artists Toyah, Glen Matlock, Lee John, Carol Decker, Cheryl Baker and many more. Zach Williams is the founding member and frontman for The Lone Bellow, an Americana Folk featuring Zach, Kanene Donehey Pipkin and Brian Elmquist. Best known for their powerhouse vocals and emotive blend of folk, country, and soul, the storied trio exploded onto the scene in 2014 with their self-titled debut, which made a bunch of end-of-year lists and garnered praise from respected outlets like People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly and NPR, who lovingly dubbed them an ‘earnest and magnetic folk-pop [trio] built to shake the rafters.'Zach got into songwriting after a personal tragedy—his wife, who was paralyzed in a horseback riding accident, inspired him to channel his grief into music. He'd been writing songs for a few years but the accident pushed him into bolder creative spaces and out into the NYC folk scene. Rockwood Music Hall, a mainstay of many an indie folk musician, played a key early role in Williams' success. Initially performing as a solo artist, Williams eventually brought in Pipkin and Elmquist, both of whom shared a similar passion for Americana music and storytelling. The trio quickly became a tight-knit unit, blending their diverse influences into a distinctive sound that continues to turn heads a decade later. The Bellow moved to Nashville in 2016, made a bunch more records, and shortly after this taping, performed a live concert with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra.Zach and I sat down to talk about the evolution of his music and career, now in its second decade. Among the things I wanted to know was what he —at the outset of his creative journey — imagined a successful career to look like, versus what it eventually became. We touched on those early days, how the music scene has changed with the domination of Spotify and its ilk. He also played one live in the studio. If you're feeling what we do, take a second to like and subscribe. It helps a lot. Thanks for listening! Shelby Lynne is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her landmark classic album I Am Shelby Lynne, which won her a Grammy award for Best New Artist. We recently sat down with Shelby to discuss the evolution of her songwriting, from her early days in Nashville to her recent genre-defying "comeback" album Consequences of the Crown. PART ONEScott and Paul talk about their favorite single lyrical lines, lyrics that bug them from songs they otherwise like, and quibble over one of Kris Kristofferson's best-known lines. Plus, they call on listeners to submit their own choices for discussion on an upcoming episode. PART TWOOur in-depth interview with Shelby LynneABOUT SHELBY LYNNEShelby Lynne won the Grammy award for Best New Artist in the wake of her genre-bending and critically-acclaimed 1999 album, I Am Shelby Lynne. But it was actually her sixth studio album on an artistic path that took time to unfold. Lynne and her sister, fellow artist Allison Moorer, grew up surrounded by country music. As detailed in Moorer's gripping memoir, Blood, they were also surrounded by violence and trauma. Both found escape through music, with Lynne signing her first recording contract at the age of 19. Initially working with legendary producer Billy Sherrill, best known for his albums with Tammy Wynette and George Jones, Shelby released a series of albums from Nashville in the late ‘80s through the mid-‘90s. She won the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist Award in 1991, and was nominated for the ACM's Top Vocal Duo of the Year honor with Faith Hill in 1996. Without any major hit singles, however, Shelby eventually took a break from recording. After moving to Palm Springs, California, and partnering with producer Bill Botrell in 1998, she changed direction and found new footing as an uncategorizable artist committed to artistic integrity. The result, I Am Shelby Lynne, has recently been re-released in a 25th Anniversary edition. Follow-up albums Love, Shelby, Identity Crisis, Suit Yourself, and the Dusty Springfield tribute Just a Little Lovin' were well-received precursors to Lynne launching her own record label. Her subsequent albums Tears, Lies and Alibis, Merry Christmas, Revelation Road, and I Can't Imagine all reached the Top 10 on Billboard's Americana/Folk chart, as did her 2017 collaborative album with sister Allison Moorer. Shelby has recently returned to Nashville and has collaborated with Ashley Monroe, Little Big Town's Karen Fairchild, and others to create her seventeenth album, an unflinchingly honest exploration of heartbreak, called Consequences of the Crown.

Utah musician Peter Breinholt and Paul Cardall, raised in the umbrella of Mormonism, and host Paul Cardall explore the history of commercial Mormon music, Latter-Day Saint culture and theology. Growing up under the umbrella of Mormonism, they discuss the differences in how they were raised. Paul comes from an orthodox home in Salt Lake City where his family was active in all the cultural and theological teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). Whereas, Peter grew up outside of Utah and didn't have an active family. He moved to Utah, started a band, and evolved into an active Latter-Day Saint.Peter explains that there are Mormons making Mormon-themed music for Mormons sold at LDS bookstores, and then there are popular bands or singers who happen to be LDS. Paul summarizes how popular LDS-themed music has become; it's a multi-million dollar industry. Peter clarifies that in Utah, where LDS headquarters are, because of the social network that the Church provides, when things catch on, it's like a wildfire. There are mega trends in Mormonism.Paul talks about pioneer immigrants who wrote hymns using the contemporary style of their time. They mention that even though there is a commercial music culture, the church itself is rather strict on what they present in worship services called Sacrament Meetings, and full-time missionaries are allowed to listen to. Electric guitars and drums aren't allowed in services. Missionaries were allowed to listen to the Tabernacle Choir and some piano music, like Paul. Today, missionaries can listen to whatever helps them feel the spirit of God, though leaders are still cautious. As the church evolved in the 80s, there was Michael McLean, a songwriter who produced a series of videos promoting church doctrine. Missionaries would take those to those who saw the ad on TV. They talk about Mormon ad campaigns in the 70s and 80s. The songs in the ads were a huge part in persuading people emotionally and had a significant influence on the direction commercial Mormon music proceeded.Peter and Paul talk about the Osmonds, the most popular LDS musicians in the 20th century. Their fifth studio album that was on the Billboard charts is called “The Plan.” Their concept album was an opportunity for The Osmonds to share Mormon theology. There have been people who have joined the church as a result of their love for Donny Osmond. They skip ahead a few decades to talk about another famous band, The Killers, whose lead singer Brandon Flowers is a devout Mormon. In the late 1970s, early 80s, Afterglow was a blockbuster duo whose songs were rich with harmonies. They were one of the first to have a record deal with the church-owned bookstore, called Deseret Book. Their music was overly religious with strict LDS themes. Deseret Book at the time had hundreds of stores along with hundreds of independent stores by people who sold LDS related products. Record labels began to pop up.Peter brings up Kenneth Cope, whose voice was featured in some of those Mormon ads. Kenneth wrote and recorded some of the most successful commercial Mormon music. All of this is happening while Amy Grant in the Christian market or Gospel Music Association was becoming successful, and her Christian-themed music crossed over into the adult contemporary top 40. Greater Than Us All was Kenneth's successful debut with His Hands and Never A Better Hero. My Servant Joseph was another hit album about with songs about LDS founder Joseph Smith. Kenneth takes his responsibilities in the church seriously and when he was called to be a Bishop, in a church with no paid ministry, we didn't hear much from Kenneth Cope until recently. He'd spent 15 years producing a new musical called "Son of Man."Along with Kenneth, Michael Webb recorded similar LDS themed songs and has since left the church. Paul says one of his favorite songs is a new Christian song by Michael Webb. Peter and Paul explore artists Julie De Azevedo, Felicia Sorensen, and other successful female artists who started to emerge in the 90s. Julie is the daughter of Lex de Azevedo, who was successful at writing LDS musicals like "Saturday's Warrior," and "My Turn on Earth." He started a record label that signed Kenneth Cope, Michael Webb, Julie, and others. Julie became a popular therapist and podcast host helping countless LDS women understand their value. They mention Hillary Weeks and move into a conversation about Jeff Simpson, a former Disney producer. Jeff was ambitious in helping take LDS music forward into a more contemporary and overall style. He had a vision to make LDS music part of the broader Christian market under the Gospel Music Association. But Jeff's label Excel was never successful because of the differences. He was successful at creating a film production and distribution entity with the breakout hit "God's Army" by Richard Dutcher. Excel would later sell to Deseret Book. He also created an award show called "The Pearls" honoring LDS music. Before talking about cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, Peter mentions Nashville Producer Jason Deere who created the Nashville Tribute Band, which was country music with LDS themes. Cellist Steven Sharp Nelson, who is now a member of YouTube sensation The Piano Guys, worked on hundreds of albums by members of the LDS faith. Peter shares how he met Steve and began using him in his band. Later, Paul used Steve to orchestrate his music with another brilliant LDS artist, Marshall McDonald. Both Marshall and Steven worked as a team to help dozens of artists. Paul invited Steve to let him produce "Sacred Cello" for Paul's label Stone Angel Music. Steve didn't believe it would be successful, but the album debuted No. 18 on the Billboard Classical Charts. Steve is an artist who shared the burden with artists that occurs in the studio and on the stage. Paul shares with Peter the countless LDS artists who created LDS-themed albums that debuted on the Billboard charts. Deseret Book began reporting sales to Soundscan."Especially For Youth" is the next topic. The weeklong camp on Brigham Young University's campus and dozen other colleges across the United States gathered LDS Youth from all over. EFY gave these LDS teenagers a 12-song compilation that featured a cassette, CD of LDS artists who wrote songs about the camp theme. Every kid received one. EFY music began in 1986 and continued until 2019 before the LDS Church changed the youth program. In the 80s not only did you have Michael McLean, Kenneth Cope, and Julie De Azevdeo, but over the decades, artists evolved out of these produced EFY albums. Why? They were approved by the church since the program was under BYU, a church-owned private university. Not everyone appreciated the songs, but the production was top quality. However, producers and artists were not given the standard music industry fees. Peter wanted to get involved and was at a point in his career where the LDS church listened to him. He recruited Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson's partner in The Piano Guys, to produce an authentic album of songs. However, they were restricted by several policies. Peter produced one more several years ago with songwriter Russ Dixon from the Utah group Colors. Concerts were also performed, and youth looked forward to it. Overtime EFY did away with the concerts because leaders felt there was too much attention drawn to the artists. There was one theme song that was the EFY “We Are The World” that brought the popular artists who were LDS together called, “Especially For Youth.” Mormons who go to the Temple make covenants that they'll donate all their time and talents to building up the Church. As a result, artists felt an obligation to do things for free or for very little pay. They discuss firesides, which are special events inside a church building. In the beginnings, Churches wanted firesides, but overtime fewer and fewer musicians were invited to perform their music about God. Peter shares his experience being asked to perform for LDS leaders and bring his band, only they wouldn't pay for anything. Peter would have to pay his band out of his pocket.Peter and Paul share their frustration as an artist who doesn't do LDS themed music. Because he lent his voice to a few LDS themed songs, the music platform's algorithm made him an LDS artist and recommends other LDS artists instead of the Americana Folk artists. Paul also shares his frustration that new material still references artists that the metadata feels is comparable to when Paul started in 1995. Paul talks about doing an album with Steele Croswhite, who was not LDS, and slowly the culture started working with people of other Christian denominations.Paul talks about his experience speaking and performing at a Missionary Fall social attended by Apostles Russell M. Nelson and Elder David A. Bednar. A previous 70s prophecy by President Spencer Kimball invited LDS members to create the very finest artist, particularly because he believed they have all the truth. He showed the apostles the classical Billboard charts that had 5 out of 10 people who were LDS. He showed that his prophecy was being fulfilled. Afterward, Elder Bednar invited Paul to write a song with him. Paul worked with Steven Sharp Nelson and Marshall McDonald to produce Paul and David Bednar's office song "One by One." Paul would later present Elder Bednar with a plaque showing he was part of a No. 1 Billboard charting album. Paul would perform this piece with LDS tenor Nathan Pacheco. Paul discusses the positive experience of doing business with Elder Bednar and the corporate church concerning owning the master rights to their song. Paul learned that Apostles do not take a royalty. If so, it goes directly to the church missionary department.Peter talks about Trina Harmon, a Nashville songwriter who isn't LDS, has helped several Mormons evolve as writers and artists. She complimented LDS members but said she's not yet met an LDS artist who is truly aligned with the mission of the Church. The LDS Church demands a lot of service and rules, leaving artists at odds in creating music. Paul agrees and says that anyone, LDS or not, who creates music that points people to Jesus Christ is important. They briefly discuss Paul Simon who is getting older and producing an album about his relationship with God. Maturing popular artists lean into producing faith-based recordings. Artists need to speak to the struggles. Peter talks about his daughter choosing to go on a mission and his concern that it could go one or two ways. Missionaries lean in or when they return, get out of the church.Paul shares Christian artist Andrew Peterson, who like Peter Breinholt, built a community of artists within a cultural context. In Mormon culture, there's a little bit of reluctance towards charismatic musicians. When Peter was connecting with the youth in a fireside, the leader stood up to make sure the audience understood that Peter is not someone who they need to look up to, but to look up to God. Leaders tend to put down artists. A leader cornered Peter to ask him if he's a kingdom builder or a Peter builder. They discuss Mormon theology about being ordained Kings and Queens, so there's a sense of looking down on those who aren't anointed joint heirs with God. Paul shares that he needed to strip away all the idols and ideology that stood in the way of having a full relationship with Christ. Paul believes in the Four Gospels over any new revelation from those who claim to be God's prophets. The Four Gospels are 4 eye witnesses of the Resurrected Lord who disagree on the details, but they all tell the same story. He goes into talking about the Codex Vaticanus and the other codexes that were used by St. Jerome to give the world the Latin Vulgate. Paul gets into why he doesn't believe in a Church that he loves with all his heart. They talk about Joseph Smith's first vision narrative that the Church has been teaching for hundreds of years, that even LDS scholars say that narrative can't be sustained. It's simply not true. Peter says that artists deconstruct. It's why artists write songs, to say something they can't say with words. They compose how they feel. They discuss challenges in Mormon doctrine. Paul talks about one of the Christian churches he attends called Immanuel Nashville with Pastor TJ Tims. Artists analyze everything.Paul and Peter end by setting up part two. ABOUT PETER BREINHOLTPeter Breinholt is well-known performer in the Salt Lake region and became so largely through word-of-mouth. His debut record became the best-selling independently released CD ever in the state of Utah, and was described a decade after it's release as "an underground classic" by Salt Lake Magazine. Peter has performed for countless sold out crowds in every major concert hall in the state, including Kingsbury Hall, Tuacahn and Sundance. Utah Governor Gary Herbert recently honored Peter with the Governor's Mansion Award for Achievement in the Performing Arts for his influence as a songwriter and performing artist.

As an artist, to grow and achieve success, it is important to put yourself out there, focus on developing yourself, and create what you want without worrying about peoples' opinion. Pursuing your passion with dedication and staying true to yourself is the key factor. Don't just dream but take action towards what you want and make sure it makes you feel fulfilled at the same time. Doing so can reward you in a number of ways.No one ever becomes a professional artist overnight. It takes time, patience, and tenacity to learn the tricks of the trade. The Wildwoods' delicate melodies and descriptive lyrics come from nature, love, experiences from the road, and growing up in Nebraska. The band released their debut album, Sweet Nostalgia, followed by a duo EP, Birdie & Goose, in 2017 and quickly established themselves as a creative, harmonious, and instrumental force in their local music scene. Since then, The Wildwoods have released another full-length record, Across A Midwest Sky (2019), as well as a handful of singles, Little Home (2020) and Like My Old Man (2021), and have supported touring acts such as Elephant Revival, Arts Fishing Club, The Accidentals, The Way Down Wanderers, and Jamie Wyatt.Along with performing several Sofar concerts in cities such as London, Brooklyn, and St. Louis, as well as a European tour in 2019, the group has performed at several festivals, including Summerfest, The Nebraska Folk and Roots Festival, Wakarusa, and the Flatwater Music Festival. In 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2021 The Wildwoods were nominated by the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards as a top Americana/Folk artist in Nebraska, and in 2022 they were named “Best Band” by the Lincoln Journal Star's ‘Lincoln's Choice Awards.' For his next pick of an album that has, “been around awhile” Shane selects Mandolin Orange's 2015 release, “Such Jubilee.” Mandolin Orange (now known as Watchhouse since a name change last year) is an Americana/Folk duo from North Carolina formed in 2009 by husband and wife duo Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz. Shane has special memories with this band seeing them live with his father. Trevor's introduction to the band was their 2019 release which Shane had recommended when Album Divers was in its infancy though never materialized as a deep dive episode. This 2015 release was written by the couple while on the road, but recorded back at home in North Carolina and offers a stripped down aesthetic which allows the listener to absorb lyrics offering little worlds about the importance of savoring the moment in the context of love, loss, and generational connection. This album represents the first revelation by Shane of a trio of albums that he purchased on vinyl for Trevor as a surprise gift. The next two will be revealed to both him and the Album Divers audience in due time. Stay tuned. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ HOW TO CONNECT WITH ALBUM DIVERS: *You can submit your questions or comments about this episode or anything else on your mind here via our text line at: (502) 792-8080 *Leave us an audio message here: https://www.speakpipe.com/AlbumDivers We promise to respond and may even feature your thoughts on a future episode. *Follow us on Facebook and Instagram at Album Divers *Email us at Albumdiverspodcast@gmail.com *Please subscribe and review wherever you get your podcasts!

Kate followed her heart, left her career in law, and found creative expression in songwriting. She learned to look into what was inside and create from there. Even though Kate tapped inside herself for her creativity, she was still looking out there, in many places for ways to understand her own psychology. Each place she looked was helpful to a point, but never the entire, lasting picture. When she heard of the 3 Principles understanding, it brought all the puzzle pieces together for her. And this understanding has naturally come out through her songs. Please enjoy Kate's conversation with Rob and a taste of her beautiful music.Thank you, Kate, for the permission to use the copyrighted music in this episode.Website: www.kateellis.com Social Media: @kateellismusicKate Ellis is an Americana/Folk singer-songwriter. Indie Americana/Folk Artist Delaney Hafener reveals her musical journey. Her ethereal voice resonates in beautiful harmony with her music. Over the past decade, Delaney has covered tremendous ground in live performances, original music as well as touring with her band. Before she could speak, Delaney Hafener has found the best way for her to communicate is through music. She began singing Gram Parsons and Neil Young songs with her dad, and at the age of 12 started learning guitar with an old Gibson she revived from the basement. She wrote her first songs with the help and encouragement of her mom and began cutting her teeth as a performer at open mics when she was 14. Hafener founded the indie-folk band Pandafan at 17 and found some regional success with the group. Based mostly in NYC, they've played in venues such as Mercury Lounge, Cafe Lena, The Bug Jar, Gypsy Sally's Vinyl Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall, Suffolk Theater, and Guild Hall, and many others. At the height of their gigs, the young band was playing up to 5 gigs a week with frequent double-header Saturdays in the busy Long Island summer season. The Belle Curves' sound is akin to bands such as Brandi Carlile, The Wild Reeds, Lucinda Williams, and The Jayhawks. The Belle Curves is led by Delaney Hafener, formerly of indie-folk outfit Pandafan, and features a rotating cast of musicians. They have crafted a unique sound inspired by the many traditions of Americana, complementing introspective lyrics and a songwriting style that can be reminiscent of both the Laurel Canyon and Bakersfield. The Belle Curves' music touches on themes of self-doubt, progressive politics, identity, and disaffection, working to create a distinctly youthful folk aesthetic. A collection of protest music for this moment in American history, The Belle Curves' EP "2020" has been described as "absolutely brutal. If Dar Williams and Stephin Merritt started a Woody Guthrie inspired band, it would be something like The Belle Curves," according to Country Queer. American rock band Blackberry Smoke - Made up of Charlie Starr (vocals, guitar), Paul Jackson (guitar, vocals), Richard Turner (bass, vocals), Brit Turner (drums) and Brandon Still (keyboards) - has become known for a singular sound indebted to classic rock, blues, country and folk. Since their debut in 2004, the Atlanta-based band has independently released six full-length albums and toured relentlessly, building a strong and loyal community of fans. The band has also had unparalleled success with sales of each of their last albums. In 2015 they released Holding All the Roses, which was the first independently-released record to hit #1 on the Billboard Country album charts in modern history. Like An Arrow followed in 2016, again putting them at #1. 2018 saw the band outsell all other releases with their self-produced Find A Light plus the acoustic accompaniment, The Southern Ground Sessions. Most recently, in 2019 Blackberry Smokereleased Homecoming: Live in Atlanta, a recorded performance from their annual show in the band's home town. It also debuted at #1 on Billboard's Americana/Folk sales charts. This became the 4th consecutive album for Blackberry Smoke to be atop the charts. In addition to their success domestically, the band has also had #1 Rock, #1 Independent, and #1 U.K. Americana album chart releases in the United Kingdom and Europe.

Hey, y'all. I am Shay. This is the on air indie show.Welcome & enjoy. Episode 50.First, music history facts for June 1st.David Bowie released his self-titled debut studio album in 1967. They released two singles from the album. “Rubber Band” and “The Laughing Gnome”. The album's failure cost Bowie his record contract with Deram Records who dropped him in April 1968.We meet Jaimee Harris today. Her debut album Red Rescue was one of the top Americana albums that year. The Congress House Sessions sophomore album released in January. An incredible release, with a stripped-down version of Red Rescue.Jaimee has earned the moniker “The Next Queen of Americana Folk” by many industry watchers. We chat about everything and anything on the show. From her music, life experiences, women in music and prison reform.Enjoy!Tracks: "Depressive State" 16:23 "Snow White Knuckles" 34:51 "Catch It Now" 42:33"Red Rescue" 57:06 Full Bio Provided by the Artist JAIMEE HARRIS“The Next Queen of Americana-Folk” (NPR)The Congress House SessionsIn 2018, everything in my life changed. In May, I left my job to pursue music full time. By August, I was on a musical rocket ship, opening shows all over the world for Mary Gauthier, who received a GRAMMY nomination in December of 2018.On paper—and on social media—it looked like a dream come true. In a lot of ways, it was. But in reality, I felt like I was drowning. — Jaimee HarrisOn the heels of her debut album Red Rescue, hailed by many as one of the top Americana albums of 2018, Jaimee Harris does not disappoint with the release of The Congress House Sessions, a thoughtful, intimate EP with stripped-down recordings of some of her most requested songs. These new recordings, recorded at the storied Congress House Studio by Mark Hallman (Carole King, Ani DiFranco, Eliza Gilkyson) and Andre Moran (Sarah Borges, Rickie Lee Jones), feature some of Austin's favorite players, including Jane Ellen Bryant and Kris Nelson on backing vocals, Ray Bonneville on harmonica, Brian Patterson on electric guitar, and Sammy Powell on piano. Don't let the healthy list of players mislead you; this is no large, speaker-rattling production. Longtime friends add color and texture, but what you'll hear is Harris and her guitar, delivering her songs in a setting closer both to what they were at their inception, alone in her room with a guitar, and how they have developed after a few years acclimating to performing without a band.Jaimee Harris loves fronting a band, and it shows. During the years she built a devoted critical and popular following in Austin, Texas, she fronted a slate of seasoned musicians with admirable swagger. When she alighted upon the scene, this jaded music city, replete with (and weary of) singer-songwriters, woke up and took notice. Here, finally, was a new voice—yes, her singing voice is noteworthy: rich, sonorous, full, delivering a uniquely stylized, throaty tone—but equally important, here was the new voice of a noteworthy writer and performer. If you meet Harris today, you'll want to be her friend. And no matter what part of the country you're in, if you spend a day with her, she will convince you to meet up at a nearby roller coaster park/pinball arcade/skeeball hall she happens to know is awesome. She will share embarrassing stories and laugh at your worst jokes (either because she finds them funny or because she finds hilarious how bad your jokes are). Later, when you watch her sing, she'll break your heart, cradle your heart, win your heart, then break it all over again. The next day, you wouldn't be the first to feel jealous. This friendly, breezy, beautiful swirl of platinum hair, impossibly high cheekbones, and a winning smile has it too easy, you think. Talent and looks? Gag me. While a cliché in this age of ubiquitous self-improvement empathy memes, it holds true that you never know what someone is going through or has been through.

The Grammy’s were supposed to be this weekend and have now been postponed until March 14th from what the online world tells me. Today’s guest is part of a Grammy award winning band that was nominated for another Grammy this year…but then turned it down. Joe Mailander is the guitar player for The Okee Dokee Brothers and he is here with us today to talk more about the band’s heart behind their choice to decline their nomination as well as #allthethings. I kind of mean that—this conversation is amazing. We go deep and wide in today’s episode covering all things singer/songwriter, parenting, child development, stigmas surrounding children’s music, the evolution of family music, history, storytelling, music genres, the creative process, connection with nature, adventuring, and how parents are changing the world. Okee Dokee Brothers Bio: As childhood friends growing up in Denver, Colorado, Joe Mailander and Justin Lansing were always exploring the outdoors. Whether it was rafting down their neighborhood creek or discovering hiking trails through the Rocky Mountains, Joe and Justin were born adventurers. Now, as the GRAMMY® Award-winning Okee Dokee Brothers, they have put this passion for the outdoors at the heart of their Americana Folk music. Joe and Justin record and perform family music with a goal to inspire children and their parents to step outside and get creative. They believe this can motivate kids to gain a greater respect for the natural world, their communities, and themselves. The five-time Parents’ Choice Award winners have garnered praise from the likes of NPR’s All Things Considered and USA Today, and have been called “two of family music’s best songwriters. If you’re here because you’re already a huge Okee Dokee Brothers fan like myself and my kids, welcome! Joe is so great! If you’re new to their music, welcome! I’m thrilled to be the person who gets to introduce you to modern family music—not only from The Okee Dokee Brothers but other bands and musicians that Joe generously shares with us, too. We had the pleasure of interviewing Zoë Nutt over Zoom video! Nashville newcomer Zoë Nutt understands that time is precious. Although struggling with hearing loss from an early age, Zoë (now 27) wrote and recorded her new album, "How Does It Feel?", in the wake of a cochlear implant surgery intended to save her from complete and total deafness. The album rarely addresses her lifelong battle, but is blatantly informed by the maturity, self-awareness and artistic resilience as a result.Produced by celebrated songwriter Tammi Kidd Hutton (LeAnn Rimes, Rascal Flatts) along with Ben Phillips (Chris Janson) and Greg Magers (Umphrey’s McGee, Lupe Fiasco), the album was created over a two-year period of losing her hearing as an adult and reteaching herself to hear. While in the studio, Zoë needed to hit pause on the recording process to have surgery. Over the course of the next 12 months following her cochlear implant surgery, Zoë retaught herself how to hear, all while continuing to write this standout project. Despite this unspeakable hardship for a young creative with her entire career in front of her, Zoë persevered. The result was a 10-track collection that uses infectious, gleeful melodies and ‘90s-era production juxtaposed against lyrics conveying the torrent emotions that accompany heartache, hardship and artistic resilience. It also features a guest vocal appearance by Brandy Clark and by Jaren Johnston and Neil Mason of The Cadillac Three.Elsewhere on the album Zoë brings a “Americana-Folk flair” (American Songwriter) on the album’s lead single “Happy,” a vibrantly savvy character study about recognizing and cherishing the people and moments that really matter. On the Brandy Clark duet “Too Fast,” Zoë finds herself wishing she could be brave and live life on the edge, while battling her internal voices of being stuck and afraid.Overall, How Does It Feel is an utterly captivating collection all about isolation, belonging and growth, proving that Zoë Nutt is not taking a minute for granted. We want to hear from you! For full episode notes go to-https://www.ourpnwmusic.com/podcast/005Our PNW Music co-hosts, Rudy and Kristine, were expecting just another average singer-songwriter interview when they sat down with Havilah Rand. Just a few short minutes into the conversation, they knew that Ms. Rand was much more than just your run-of-the-mill Americana/Folk artist. In this episode, you will learn about Havilah's introduction to music and education ventures at the Interlochen Arts Academy and Manhattan School Of Music, where she obtained training in both Jazz and Classical music styles. Ms. Rand will also speak about her travels across America and Europe and discusses the vast differences between being a musician abroad vs here in the United States. What stood out the most in this interview was learning about Havilah's amazing programs she has developed. Between her LifeSong Project, where she preserves the experiences of our elders through song, to her youth programs, consisting of summer songwriter camps and home schooling programs, which work to instill confidence in kids as well as teaching music, Ms. Rand has proved herself as much of a humanitarian as she is a musician. Also included in this episode are clips from Havilah's live performance at Birdsview Brewing, where she amazed listeners with her soulful melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Jaimee Harris is poised to become the next queen of Americana-Folk, a slightly edgier Emmylou Harris for the younger generation. Her new album draws comparisons to Patty Griffin, Lucinda Williams, and Kathleen Edwards – all writers who know how to craft a heartbreakingly beautiful song with just enough grit to keep you enthralled. Harris writes about the basic human experience, in a way that is simple, poetic, and often painfully relatable."You keep comin over... I keep goin under..."Harris isn’t afraid to get personal, but her vulnerability never veers into the self-indulgent. Each little confessional gem she puts out there is something the listener will connect to; these are things we’ve all felt, though many of us are less than likely to admit them. “In a depressive state… how long will I feel this way?” Harris's songs have a depth to them, and her lyrics betray a wisdom beyond her years. “I write as a way of dealing with things," she says. "There’s also a lot of acknowledging my own faults. These songs feel pretty vulnerable… to the point where I wonder if people are going to ask me ‘Are you okay?’ But I really just hope they see a little bit of themselves in the songs and find something they can connect to.”Be sure to rate, review, and subscribe to the podcast. To follow Jaimee Harris go to JaimeeHarris.comTo listen to the official Spotify playlist for Volume 1: The Stars At Night click below!https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3H8FohMC1Xu7gvtEUaWipA?si=cosHb8CsQN2sob1pN2sob1pNzuyMQ

Marti's Music Kitchen - from the award-winning Americana/Folk duo, Julie Amici and Dean Mueller. They are the 2019 recipient of the Cascade Blues Association “Back What You Believe In” award. Today, Bone Marrow and Braised Short Ribs with Mashed Potatoes and a Live Performance! julieamici.com https://www.facebook.com/julieamici/ https://www.youtube.com/user/rippingglass/featured https://www.instagram.com/julieamici/ http://MartiMendenhall.com http://Patreon.com/MartiMendenhall Roasted Bone Marrow - Serves 2 4-8 beef marrow bones 1 minced shallot handful of mined parsley lemon juice extra virgin olive oil sea salt 1 baguette olive oil Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Put bones, Salted and cut side up, in ovenproof skillet. (use a skillet to capture the fat that will run out of the bones). Cook about 15-17 minutes until marrow looks caramelized and yummy but not running out of the bones. While bones are cooking slice baguette into rounds and drizzle one side with olive oil. Place in the oven for 5 minutes to toast, keep an eye on them so they brown but do not burn. Combine shallots and parsley in small bowl. Just before bones are ready, whisk together olive oil and lemon juice and drizzle over parsley mixture until leaves are just coated. Plate each serving by arranging bones on the plate topped with shallot-parsley mixture and toasted baguette. Spoon marrow out of bones with dressing and onto the toast. Dip the toast in the pan drippings also, because it's so good! Sous Vide Mashed Potatoes with Garlic and Rosemary 2 pounds Yukon Gold 5 cloves garlic 3 sprigs rosemary 4 oz unsalted butter 1 cup whole milk 2 teaspoons sea salt Instructions Set your sous vide to 194 Rinse and peel the potatoes. Thinly slice them into 1/8-inch pieces. Smash and peel the garlic cloves. Seal the potatoes, garlic, rosemary, butter, milk, and salt into a zip or vacuum seal bag and cook until the potatoes are tender, about 1.5 hours. (you may want to put the rosemary in cheesecloth so you don't have to pick out little bits later) Open the bag and pour the liquid through a sieve into a small bowl (reserve for later). Discard the rosemary. Empty the potatoes into a large bowl and mash them or use a potatoe ricer or food mill. Gently whisk the melted butter and milk back into the mashed potatoes to get a smooth and creamy texture. Porcini Braised Short Ribs 2.5 lb beef chuck short ribs (approx 4 ribs) Salt & Pepper to taste 1 Yellow Onion 1 rib of celery 1 medium-size carrot 1 handful or dried Porcini Bacon fat 4 cloves sliced garlic 1 cup red wine 1 cup beef bone broth 1 t coriander seeds 1 bay leaf 2 Sprigs of Thyme Coat the short ribs liberally with Salt and pepper. Heat up bacon fat or oil in a cast iron pan over medium high heat. 1. Season the short ribs all over with salt and pepper. 2. Dice the onion, carrot, and celery. 3. Place the coriander seeds in a small piece of cheesecloth and tie with kitchen string to form a sachet. 4. Rehydrate Porcini in a bowl of hot water (save the water) 5. Heat some bacon fat or oil in a skillet and sear the ribs on all sides. 6. After searing, remove the ribs from the skillet and add to the crockpot on top of bed of onion, celery, and carrot. 7. Deglaze the pan with the red wine and scrape all the good bits from the pan and put the liquid in the crockpot. 8. Add the porcini, porcini water, and bone broth to the crockpot until liquid level is near the top of the short ribs. 9. Add the sachet, thyme, garlic, and bay leaf. 10. Set Crock pot on high until bubbling and then set to low and cook for 8-10 hours. Remove ribs and set aside. Skim off some fat if desired and heat the remaining liquid on high in the crockpot or a pan until it is reduced to the desired consistency. You can whisk in some flower if you want a thicker gravy. Prepare the each plate by placing a rib on a bed of mashed potatoes and top with the desired amount of gravy & vegetable mixture. ENJOY!

Salme Dahlstrom – a.k.a. Salme -- is a New York-based musical artist who writes, performs and produces irrepressible dance music. She is releasinga new album and we are going to debut it Friday on MusicFridayLive! Romance and Rebellion. Emerging from the bubbling hip warren of production studios, venues and meetups in the Echo Park district of LA, David LaViola (Lead Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Aaron Medina (Lead Guitar, Harmony Vocals), Kyle Jordan Mueller (Drums), and Brandon Davis (Bass, Harmony Vocals), formed the band Romance and Rebellion in 2015 and quickly gained traction in the crowded Los Angeles market. After capturing the attention of famed producer Stefan Litrownik (Andy Grammer, One Direction), they began work on their debut EP, a project that would produce the addictive, beat-driven single, “More Than Friends.” They are the essence of youth exuberance and their growing local fanbase will soon be national. Goodbye Blue is the duo Charlotte Kendrick and Dan Rowe who write and sing melodic, personal Americana-Folk reminiscent of classic story-telling artists. Both Charlotte and Dan grew up playing music and their separate lives took many turns – including Charlotte’s 2 years in the Peace Corps – before they met through a music producer relative of Dan’s. They synced immediately and played and toured extensively until a family of three children arrived, which slowed them to a crawl musically (although not logistically!). Their new album “Worth the Wait” marks their re-emergence into Americana music

The duo performs melodic and personal Americana-Folk reminiscent of story-telling artists such as The Weepies, Patty Griffin, and John Prine. In addition to their close personal relationship (they’re married), Charlotte and Dan have a longstanding and complimentary musical partnership. The duo previously made three albums together with Charlotte as singer/songwriter and Dan in the producer/arranger role. Now performing as Goodbye Blue, the current songs reflect a time of life that many can relate to, describing the joys and struggles of raising small children. Their current release, Worth the Wait, comes out on March 21st, 2016 on Wondermore Records. For more, click here.
Andrew Landers has spent 2 decades playing his narrative in the unsung Americana Folk genre, a colorful brainy singer songwriter who shares the stage with a myriad of national artists. With 11 records to his name, he is the epitome of what a modern day traveling corduroy storytelling troubadour sounds and feels like. Ed Rowell (Author & Speaker) "Andrew is not at all that hard to figure out. He's just a neo-hippy poet musing on theology and sociology from a post-modern perspective. He simply finds the sacred in the ordinary, the humor in the serious, and the tranquil in the noise that surrounds us all." Andrew lives in rainy Olympia WA with 6 amazing kids, 1 pretty wife and a 72 VW Bus. He digs the St. Louis Cardinals and believes the Yankees suck! He's fully convinced that Barney “the purple messiah” is the reason dinosaurs went instinct and has a codependent relationship with his 3 acoustic guitars named CASH, Dylan, and Guthrie. Max Allen Collins (author of "Road To Perdition) "Andrew is the real deal - soulful, unpretentious storyteller who tells it from the heart. His music is as profound as it is entertaining." Andrew says it like this: "Music is my compass, it’s how I see the world and long to see it better. The songs that I'm singing every night are the songs that I need — not to learn how to play, but to learn how to live better.” A live show with Andrew Landers and or Mainstreet Struggleville is a medicinal musical collide of Shawn Mullins writing style, Tommy Emmanuel’s acoustic guitar prowess, the soulful bluesy influence of Stevie Ray Vaughan, the jam bandy feel of Phish and the feel good vibe of Bob Marley. http://www.andrewlanders.com
Isaiah Dominguez: With an iPhone full of audio memos, a new mentality, and a different city of unfamiliar views, Seattle-based singer/songwriter he returns with a batch of his most honest and thoughtful songs to date. Isaiah has been adamant about representing his hometown of Olympia, no matter where life takes him and his music reflects it. His style, a unique blend of folk and pop/rock, has developed and evolved over the years through various influences. His previous music endeavors reflect this statement; Dominguez fronted the pop/punk band, Take Me Instead, for several years, playing with the likes of The Story So Far, Shoreline Drive, and Dylan Jakobson, before disbanding 2012 and launching into an era of self-discovery. The band’s breakup was bittersweet, Dominguez said. Valley, Alabama musician Daniel Brooks got his musical start as the bass player for a local cover band, Fifth Element in 2003, where he cut his teeth playing many bars and private parties. In 2006, while in college in Troy, Alabama, he met a fellow musician and formed the duo Stoned Cold Happiness. Stoned Cold Happiness would continue to play weekly around the local music scene until 2008. In 2009 Daniel would begin to venture into solo music, focusing on honing his skills on the acoustic guitar. In 2012, by happenstance of a late night jam session, Daniel and fellow musician Brett McDaniel laid the groundwork for Daniel & McDaniel, an Americana-Folk inspired acoustic duo. In early 2015, Daniel and Robbie Sellers formed the duo Pell Avenue and are currently working on their first album while playing the Southeast. When artists Beth Whitney and Bradford Loomis began writing together, they had no idea their casual co-writing experiment would blossom into the much anticipated album THE BANNER DAYS. That first night they wrote "My Beloved" in two hours. After a few more writing sessions, it waws clear to both that these songs merited a bold decision. From the first time they played together, along with Beth's husband/collaborator, Aaron Fishburn, the chemistry has been powerful. The combination of Beth's delicate, pure and melodious voice and Brandfords soulful, growling tone make for a beautifully heart wrenching harmonious blend. http://www.thebannerdays.com http://www.facebook.com/bannerdays http://www.facebook.com/northwestprime http://www.northwestprime.com This show is sponsored in part by http://audibletrial.com/northwestprime1st book is Free! MATTHEW RYAN has been celebrated for his poetic lyricism. His work challenges listeners in so many ways, always cutting to the bone with a rare honesty that isn't prone to offer easy answers. His latest 'In the Dusk of Everything' marks a distilled reclamation of his more primal Americana/Folk roots. With the bluntness of punk and the evocative rhythm of poetry his lyricism shines amongst these twelve deceptively simple songs of perseverance and closure via a clarity that operates in layers amid a world of struggle, beauty and sublime epiphany. MISS TESS is a New York City based songwriter and performing musician, who tours regularly with her band, as "Miss Tess & The Talkbacks". Inspired by styles of vintage swing, blues, country, and early rock-n-roll Miss Tess draws comparisons to artists such as Patsy Cline, Willie Nelson, Peggy Lee, and Chuck Berry, but maintains a style all of her own. Miss Tess sixth studio album, Sweet Talk, is a collection of finely crafted original material, along with one haunting cover of the Ink Spots 1941 hit I Dont Want to Set the World on Fire. With songs ranging from influences deeply rooted in a rich history of American music, Tess and her band project a sound that is distinctively timeless and unique.
