5-20-26 // Godly Ambition vs Selfish Ambition // Judges 8: 22-9:21 by Salvador Flores III
Envy and Selfish Ambition
The Way Is Jesus | Philippians 2:1–11Sermon Notes Outline INTRO Paul is writing to a church he deeply loves Unity is the defining mark of the Church The world will know we belong to Jesus by how we love one another Question: What are churches actually known for today? I. THE CALL TO UNITY (Philippians 2:1–2) “If” = since these things are already true in Christ Encouragement, love, Spirit, compassion → LIVE THIS WAY Command: Be like-minded Have the same love Be one in spirit and mind Tension: We often interpret “like-minded” as: think like me We elevate preferences to convictions Truth: Not a mind like mine → a mind like Jesus II. THE ENEMY OF UNITY: PRIDE (Philippians 2:3–4) “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit” Selfish Ambition (eritheia): Using people for personal gain Rivalry, self-promotion, advancement at all costs Vain Conceit (kenodoxia): Empty glory Needing others for worth, approval, recognition Result: One uses people One needs people Both destroy relationships and community III. THE WAY OF HUMILITY (Philippians 2:3–4) “Rather…” → the turning point What to do instead: Value others above yourself Look to the interests of others Key Truth: Pride fractures the Church Humility binds it together Reality Check: Even “serving” can be driven by pride if not transformed by the gospel Pride hides behind performance Humility produces honesty IV. THE SOURCE OF TRANSFORMATION (Philippians 2:5–8) “Have this mindset as Christ Jesus” Not behavior modification → heart transformation Mind of Christ = New inner orientation New way of seeing life Jesus' Example: Had all status → did not exploit it Equal with God → chose servanthood Lord of all → humbled Himself to death on a cross Pattern: Cross before crown Humility before exaltation Surrender before glory V. THE PROBLEM IN US We want resurrection without crucifixion We want the life of Jesus without the way of Jesus Tension Questions: Pray for enemies? Turn the other cheek? Go the extra mile? Answer: Not by trying harder By being reshaped by the gospel VI. THE LORDSHIP OF JESUS (Philippians 2:9–11) God exalted Jesus above all Every knee will bow Every tongue will confess: Jesus is Lord Key Truth: Humility becomes possible when Jesus is truly Lord Self must step off the throne VII. APPLICATION: BOW LOWER We don't live this out by trying harder We live this out by bowing lower Practical: Struggling in marriage? → Bow lower Competing with others? → Bow lower Seeking approval? → Bow lower Protecting your image? → Bow lower Principle: The lower you bow to Jesus The more honor you show others BOTTOM LINE Humility is not achieved by effort It is produced through surrender Final Call: Every knee will bow eventually Bow now—willingly, joyfully, and low before the King Jesus Christ
In a culture driven by self-promotion, this episode explores the difference between God-honoring ambition and prideful self-pursuit through the story of James and John in Matthew's Gospel. Gari and Ally unpack how selfish ambition elevates personal gain over God's glory, while true fulfillment is found in humility, trust in God's timing, and letting Him do the elevating.SUBSCRIBE, RATE, & REVIEW the podcast to stay up to date with the latest episodes. Ambition can either drive you toward God's purpose—or quietly pull your heart away from it. But the wrong kind of ambition can quietly pull your heart away from God. In a culture that constantly tells us to achieve more, build more, and prove more, it's easy to confuse calling with striving. The Bible doesn't condemn ambition—but it does warn us about the danger of selfish ambition. In this episode, Christine Caine explores the powerful difference between godly ambition and selfish ambition, revealing how our motivations shape our leadership, our relationships, and our spiritual health. If you've ever wrestled with questions like: • Am I pursuing purpose—or just proving myself? • Is my drive coming from calling or insecurity? • How do I lead and succeed without losing my soul? This message will help you realign your ambition with the heart of God. ✨ What you'll learn: • The biblical difference between godly ambition and selfish ambition • How insecurity can quietly fuel unhealthy striving • Why true success in God's Kingdom is measured by love, not achievement • How to pursue your calling while staying rooted in humility and identity in Christ

Our gracious God is doing a great work to save the world. He has the plan. In the grand scheme, He is always forming a people for Himself out of the ruins of the fall. In Samuel, we see how He gathers the people He redeems into a kingdom of righteousness. Presently, we are seeing particular things that God's anointed King will not tolerate. With Abner, we saw that clever policy and military muscle do not bring the kingdom. Last week, we saw with Joab how bitterness that cannot forgive has no place. Today, with the sons of Rimmon, we see that selfish ambition has no place.
438. Selfish Ambition vs. Overly Ambitious by StriveNinspire
Is your Christmas season feeling more stressful than soulful? In this powerful Christmas message, Pastor Chris DeArman explores Philippians 2 to reveal a side of Jesus we often overlook: The Servant King. While the world competes for status and "selfish ambition," Jesus offers a different way to live that leads to true connection and community. In this sermon, you'll discover three profound ways Jesus serves you right now: He Sits With Us: Jesus isn't a distant God; He entered into our suffering and "emptied himself" to be with us in our mess. He Saves Us: He bore the full weight of our sin on the cross so that our guilt is gone and our forgiveness is forever. He Prays For Us: Right now, Jesus is at the right hand of God interceding for you. You are not alone in your struggles. "Selfish ambition kills connection, but counting others first creates community." Learn how to shift your perspective this holiday season and live in the light of Christ's service to us.

One reason that Solomon was called wise is that he did not ignore the reality of evil in the world. He acknowledged it and lamented it. In a world where overwhelming evil threatens to overcomeus, we are called to overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21). Jesus was relentless in doinggood: saving, rescuing, forgiving, healing, etc. So let us not grow weary of doing good, for indue season we will reap, if we do not give up (Galatians 6:9).Take-Home Message: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.Do not be overcome by…- The Evil of Oppression (1-3). - Overcome Evil with… - The Good of Biblical Justice.- The Evil of Selfish Ambition (4-12). - Three Approaches to Work - The Competitive Workaholic (4) - The Impoverished Sluggard (5) - The Contented Laborer (6) - Overcome Evil with… - The Good of Biblical Community.- The Evil of Stubbornness (13-16). - Overcome Evil with… - The Good of Biblical Humility.
Following the school shooting in Minneapolis, The Christian Post has offered a definitive answer for why these massacres keep happening and why gun restrictions won't work—people are evil. But why don't politically conservative Christians apply this logic to any other issues? Surprising new data show that more young men than women want to be parents one day, and there's a growing trend of single men becoming fathers by choice. What does this reveal about our society and the breakdown of dating and marriage? Theologian and best-selling author, Miroslav Volf, discusses his new book, “The Cost of Ambition.” He says our culture of competition is damaging, and too many Christians ignore what the Bible says about the dangers of ambition. Also this week, Phil brings us news from the glowing future. Ecclesiastes 4:4-16 tells us that a man's envy of his neighbor is what drives him to chase after the winds of success in this world. Today, I am going to show you through Ecclesiastes 4 what is really going on as the new world order is changing rapidly through competition. And the question is what does it mean to work hard. Is it vanity? What about competition-is it good? We will begin to explore these issues in today's episode. Let's get started. Please SUBSCRIBE as a way of supporting this channel. Did you know that Scripture links selfish ambition and jealousy to something much darker—earthly, unspiritual, and demonic force? That means these aren't just minor character flaws; they're part of a deeper battle that affects every aspect of our lives, creating chaos and leading to every kind of evil. But there's another kind of wisdom—a wisdom from above—that's pure, peaceful, and powerfully transformative. If you've ever felt trapped in cycles of conflict or disorder, our Scripture today might hold the key to breaking free and living with clarity and purpose. Welcome to the Daily Devo. Our text today is James 3:13-16. Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. — James 3:13-16 James goes straight to the heart of the issue, exposing bitter jealousy and selfish ambition for what they truly are—demonic. Let that sink in. Jealousy and selfish ambition aren't harmless flaws or personal quirks; they're deeply rooted forces that distort our thinking, shaping attitudes and actions that lead us away from God. This duplicity isn't just a momentary slip-up—it's an earthly, unspiritual, and demonic way of life. It subtly prioritizes personal gain, power, and control while masquerading as truth, wisdom, and understanding. This duplicity appears in subtle yet destructive ways. It shows up in manipulation within relationships, where people exploit others for their own benefit. It infiltrates workplaces through deceit, backstabbing, and constant jockeying for position. It even divides churches when selfish ambition takes precedence over sacrificial love. At first glance, it might look like wisdom—after all, the world often rewards selfish ambition—but it actually plants seeds of chaos, conflict, and destruction. James calls us to something far greater—a wisdom from above, evidenced by understanding and marked by meekness. True wisdom isn't only about how much we know; it's revealed in how we live. It's not merely intellectual; it's profoundly moral and spiritual, rooted in humility, meekness, and reverence for God. It's the kind of wisdom that produces actions aligned with God's truth. Think of this process like building a house. Wisdom is the blueprint for a strong, sturdy home—you can see the design and understand what it's supposed to look like. Understanding is the actual construction—pouring the foundation, putting up walls, and carefully following the blueprint to bring it to life. Without the blueprint, the house would be chaotic, poorly constructed, and prone to collapse. Without understanding, the blueprint would remain just a nice idea on paper, never becoming a reality. When wisdom and understanding work together, they create something lasting, strong, and purposeful—just as God intended for our lives. In the same way, knowing God's truth (wisdom) and living it out (understanding) must be accompanied by the right attitude—meekness. When we align our actions with God's wisdom, the results are unmistakable: clarity replaces confusion, peace overcomes turmoil, and order arises from chaos. This isn't merely a better way to live; it's God's design, powerfully transforming our hearts, homes, and communities. Together, these elements build a life of enduring purpose and beauty. Take a moment to examine your heart. Where has jealousy or selfish ambition crept in? Confess it to God and ask for His wisdom, then choose one way to live it out today—with humility, peace, and truth. Wisdom from above builds up; ambition from within tears down. #GodlyWisdom, #BreakFreeFromAmbition, #James316 ASK THIS: Where have jealousy or selfish ambition created conflict in your life? How can you seek wisdom that's pure and peaceable? What practical steps can you take to live with meekness today? How does God's wisdom bring clarity and order to your daily choices? DO THIS: Confess any jealousy or selfish ambition to God, then choose one humble action today that reflects His wisdom and peace. PRAY THIS: Father, reveal any jealousy or selfish ambition in my heart and help me surrender it to You. Grant me Your wisdom to live with humility, peace, and purpose today. Amen PLAY THIS: Every Hour.

In a world of selfish ambition, the church is called to something radically different—a life shaped by gospel culture. While gospel doctrine provides the essential truths we stand on, gospel culture is how we live in response to those truths, embodying them in our everyday actions and relationships. In this episode, Whit and Casey dive into how gospel doctrine and culture go hand in hand and discuss our role in carrying this culture wherever we go. We live in a society that tells us that selfishness and self-centeredness are okay so that we can be happy, successful, and feel important. But, the world is full of foolish, evil, and demonic wisdom. We need to be cautious of what we are looking to and where we are looking for truth and guidance. This all goes back to knowing what you believe and why you believe it. We will never be enough and find true fulfillment if we aren't relying on godly wisdom and truth.
