Europe is turning to Turkey to fill the security vacuum left by an increasingly unreliable United States. But as Nato's secretary-general was praising Ankara's growing military role this week, the European Commission president was placing Turkey in the same bracket as China and Russia. The contradiction points to a dilemma that is only going to deepen. Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited Aselsan, one of Turkey's fast-expanding defence companies and a growing arms supplier to Europe, during a trip to Ankara on Tuesday and Wednesday, using the occasion to underline the scale of threats facing the alliance.  NATO's southern anchor "Russia's war against Ukraine rages on, China's military modernisation and nuclear expansion continue, and Iran spreads terror and chaos, and you feel this here in Turkey," he said. The visit came days after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a different message, placing Turkey alongside China and Russia as a competitor rather than an ally or membership applicant. It was a rare public signal of how deep European reservations about Ankara run, even as reliance on Turkish military capacity grows. Europe's uneasy dependency Huseyin Bagci, professor of international relations at Ankara's Middle East Technical University, says the contrast between Rutte and von der Leyen exposes a fundamental contradiction at the heart of Europe's relationship with Ankara. "What Rutte said and what von der Leyen said are two contradictory statements," he said. "Turkey is becoming less democratic. But the more America separates itself from European security, the more important Turkey will become." That dynamic is already reshaping Nato's architecture. Adana is set to host a new corps headquarters, designated MNC-TUR, under Turkish command, while Istanbul is to become the base of a new maritime command, focused on Black Sea security as part of post-war planning for Ukraine. Serhat Guvenc, a military expert at Istanbul's Kadir Has University, says Turkey's expanding capabilities and operational record make the enlarged role a natural fit. Will Turkey ditch Russian missiles for US military jets? *"Turkey's future contribution may take shape around these existing initiatives," he said, pointing to the wartime grain corridor and the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures task group as foundations to build on. Turkey has also launched an ambitious naval building programme, with modern submarines well suited to Black Sea operations. Yet the question of how far Europe can trust Ankara remains unresolved. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has maintained close ties with Vladimir Putin throughout the Ukraine war. Federico Donelli, a political scientist at the University of Trieste, says the EU is still searching for clarity on where Turkey actually stands. "Turkey has on many occasions adopted a more ambiguous stance, even in relation to the war in Ukraine," he said. "The EU would like to know whether Turkey could be a reliable partner." If Putin wins Ankara argues that its relationship with Moscow is a diplomatic asset, allowing it to serve as a potential mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey has hosted peace talks between the two sides on several occasions. But Guvenc warns that calculus could shift sharply if Russia emerges victorious. "If peace comes on Putin's terms, the potential Russian threat to Turkey's interests will increase several-fold," he said. "Russia emerging from the conflict with substantial gains will be a very different story." Erdogan weighs benefits of friendlier ties with Turkey's Western allies The tension between Turkey's military indispensability and its political unpredictability is set to take centre stage at the Nato summit on 7-8 July in Ankara. With Washington's commitment to European defence still in question, European leaders may find themselves with little choice but to deepen ties with a partner many of them do not fully trust.

According to reports, it is in talks to procure Europe's latest anti-missile system. But Ankara's aspirations are unnerving Israel – as well as its neighbours, Greece and Cyprus. Air raid warnings during an Iranian missile strike on the Turkish city of Adana, home to a Nato airbase, served as a stark reminder of Turkey's vulnerability to such attacks. While all the missiles were intercepted by Nato forces, Turkish security analyst Arda Mevlutoglu says the attacks are spurring Ankara on to procure the French-Italian SAMP/T anti-missile system. "Turkey's existing air defence system inventory, as well as the maturing air defence systems, are not capable of countering medium-range ballistic missiles or long-range ballistic missiles," he said. "So Turkey needs an urgent operational gap filler to address the ballistic missile threats. And the next-generation version of the SAMP/T seems to be the only option." Dedelerinin ismi Abdurrahmân, büyük dedeleri İshâk ve Hüseyin Efendilerdir. Büyük Türk beyliklerinden Ramazânoğlu beyliğinin en son beylerinden olan Abdülhâdî Efendinin (ki Sâmî Efendi Hazretlerinin büyük dedelerindendir) tesbîtine göre Ramazânoğlu beyliği aslen Türklerin Oğuz boyunun Üçoklar kabîlesindendir. Bu kabîlenin de şecereleri büyük Türk Hâkânı Nureddîn Zengî (Şehîd) vasıtası ile Seyfullâh Hz. Hâlid bin Velîd (r.a.)'e dayanır. Efendi Hazretleri kendi ifâdeleriyle doğumlarını şöyle nakletmektedirler: “Benim doğumum (1308) târihindedir: Adana'da Vakıfsarayı'ndadır. Doğumumdan evvel kapıya bir zât gelmiş: “Bu evde, yakında bir doğum olacaktır, oğlan olacaktır, adını: Sâmî koyunuz; hayırlı bir insan olacaktır.” diyor, gidiyor. Bir müddet sonra doğum oluyor, oğlan oluyor. Adı: “Mahmûd Sâmî” konuyor. Sonra o zât tekrâr geliyor. Oğlan doğduğunu söylüyorlar. Adının da “Muhammed Mahmûd Sâmî” konulduğunu öğrenince: “Sandıktaki emânetimi veriniz!” diyor. Ona benzer bir emâneti veriyorlar: “Bu değil; esâs sandıktaki bana âid emâneti veriniz!” diyor. Veriyorlar. Memnûn oluyor. Duâ edip gidiyor.” Efendi Hazretleri bu ma‘lûmât hakkında: “-Bunu kaydediniz. Mühimdir. Gelen zât, boş değildir. Bunları olduğu gibi sen kaydet. İleride neşredilir. İyi olur. Hayırlı olur.” diye buyurdular. Not: Bu ma‘lûmât, Muhterem Ömer Kirazoğlu (rh. âleyh) Ağabey'in kendi el yazısı ile not defterinden alınmıştır. Metinden Hazretin ism-i şerîflerinin tam olarak “Muhammed Mahmûd Sâmî” olduğu öğreniliyor. Hazretin 6 Kasım 1937de kendi el yazılarıyla, latince olarak, “Kadastro ve Tapu Tahrîrine Mahsûs Beyânnâme”de, sâdece “Sâmî” ismini ve imzâsını kullandıklarına ve nüfus cüzdanlarında da sâdece “Sâmî” ismini kullandığına göre, tam ism-i şerîflerinin kullanılmaması o devirdeki birtakım yasakları akla getirmektedir. Bu “Beyânnâme”de, Hazretin doğdukları ev Seyhân vilâyeti, Adana kazâsı, Kayalıdağ mahallesi, Sabuncu Abdullâh sokağı olarak belirtilmiştir ki burada da isimler değiştirilmiştir. Hazretin doğdukları evin bulunduğu mahalle en son Tepebağ adını almıştır.

Turkey's main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) is warning that the future of democracy in the country is at stake, as a legal crackdown against it intensifies. This month has seen three more city mayors arrested in anti-corruption probes, while half of CHP parliamentary deputies are facing having their legal immunity lifted. Thousands marched through the streets of the Mediterranean city of Adana in protest at the arrest of its mayor on alleged corruption charges. The mayors of Antalya and Adiyaman have also been detained on similar charges. More than a dozen mayors of Turkey's main opposition CHP have now been jailed. The legal crackdown began in March with the jailing of Istanbul's mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, and on Wednesday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed there would be no letting up. "We launched an investigation into the largest theft ring in the history of the Republic, the most reckless organised crime organisation ever," Erdogan told his parliamentary deputies. "Those who took bribes, those who practically held cities under extortion, those who put people in a difficult situation and then robbed them were all CHP people," he continued. A battle for survival  Erdogan further ratcheted up the pressure on the CHP with a presidential motion calling for the lifting of parliamentary immunity from 61 out of CHP's 121 deputies. CHP leader Ozgur Ozel is also under investigation for allegedly inciting public hatred and insulting the president. Ozel is at the forefront of leading anti-government protests across the country, which continue to attract large crowds as the party builds a significant lead in opinion polls over Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP). The CHP claims their growing success is what is motivating the recent prosecutions, rather than corruption. "These are politically driven arrests and investigations," declared party spokesman Ilhan Uzgel. "Not a single government party mayor is even investigated." Uzgel admits that with more than 500 of its officials having been arrested, the party is facing a battle for survival. "The government has all the instruments of the state. They control the judiciary, they control the police force etc etc. So it's very difficult to stop it." Despite mounting pressure, however, Uzgel insists they will not back down. "We are organising rallies twice a week, our leader is very energetic. He [Ozel]... said we are not going to back down. The government, they don't want the opposition party to challenge Erdogan's authority. This is the core of the issue right now." Turkey walks a fine line as conflict between Israel and Iran cools Broadcasting bans However, the political noose around the neck of the CHP continues to tighten. This week, the opposition Sozcu TV station was banned for 10 days by regulatory authorities for "inciting public hatred" after broadcasting protests against the jailing of the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu. Another opposition TV station, Halk, is facing a similar ban. The two are among the few media outlets that continue to report on the ongoing CHP protests against the waves of arrests. The broadcast bans are being seen as a sign that the days of critical media could be numbered. "I believe by the end of this year we might be hearing of the start of the liquidation of critical TV channels," claims Erol Onderoglu, Istanbul representative of the Paris-based NGO Reporters Without Borders. Fears are growing too that the threat against independent media is part of a much more worrying process of the dismantling of the pillars of democracy. Turkey steps into EU defence plans as bloc eyes independence from US Opinion polls However, the government appears to be losing the battle for people's minds, with several opinion polls reporting that more than 60 percent of people polled believe the legal crackdown on CHP is politically motivated. Anger against the government also continues to grow over 40 percent inflation. Sezin Oney, an analyst for the independent Poltiyol news outlet, fears a political showdown is looming. "Turkish democracy is on its deathbed, actually. Erdogan envisions a political stage where we don't have a really challenging opposition. [Arrests] will escalate and escalate. They will go as far as they can until they reach their target." While Erdogan remains in a strong position, the opposition is still a threat to the president. "He does have most of the cards," said Oney, "but he doesn't have the support of the public in general. So, at the end of the day, at one point it will be the people versus Erdogan." "What matters is where the security forces stand," he added, "When it comes to a point when the people take to the streets en masse, will the security bureaucracy go against their own people?" Neither the CHP nor Erdogan are showing any signs of capitulating, with protests expected to continue and likely to intensify in September, coinciding with the reopening of universities and the return of people from summer holidays. Court cases against the CHP are also scheduled to resume then. With both sides insisting they are fighting for the future of their country, it could well be a fight that leaves only one side standing.

Join Mr. Bilal Bilici, a member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, and Hoover Senior Fellow H.R. In light of the recent arrest of Istanbul mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu in March 2025, Mr. Bilici reflects on the state of Turkish politics today, the country's prospects for democracy, US-Türkiye relations and the most pressing issues both countries should align on, his take on Syria following the collapse of Assad, and the future of the tumultuous Turkish-Israeli relationship. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Bilal Bilici is a member of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye representing the province of Adana and a former member of the Foreign Policy Committee. Mr. Bilici began his political career in the Good Party, serving as an advisor to the Party Chair. He was the Good Party's representative to the United States before transitioning to the main opposition, the Republican People's Party (CHP), in 2024. In addition to his political career, Bilici has been influential in Turkish business. He has held leadership roles in the Foreign Economic Relations Board of Türkiye, including as Vice President of the Türkiye-Central American and Caribbean Business Council, and has served as Honorary Consul of Guatemala in Istanbul. Mr. Bilici earned an undergraduate degree in economics from Boston University and a master's degree in global affairs from Bahçeşehir University. H.R. McMaster is the Fouad and Michelle Ajami Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is also the Bernard and Susan Liautaud Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute and lecturer at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business. He was the 25th assistant to the president for National Security Affairs. Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy in 1984, McMaster served as a commissioned officer in the United States Army for thirty-four years before retiring as a Lieutenant General in June 2018.

TÜRK MUTFAĞI Türk mutfağı, Türkiye'nin ulusal mutfağıdır. Osmanlı kültürünün mirasçısı olan Türk mutfağı, Balkan ve Ortadoğu mutfaklarından etkilenmiş ve aynı zamanda bu mutfakları da etkilemiştir. Ayrıca Türk mutfağı yörelere göre farklılıklar gösterir. Karadeniz mutfağı, Güneydoğu mutfağı, Orta Anadolu mutfağı gibi birçok yöre kendine ait zengin bir yemek kültürüne sahiptir. ÇORBALAR Çorba özellikle kış aylarında Türk mutfağının vazgeçilmez bir parçasıdır. Mercimek çorbası, ezogelin çorbası, yoğurt çorbası ve tarhana çorbası en çok tercih edilen çorbalardır. Ancak Türk mutfağı bunların yanı sıra sayısız miktarda çorbalar içerir. Etler, sebzeler ve baklagiller genellikle çorbaların ana malzemeleridir. Et suyu, un, yoğurt ve sebzeler çorbaların besleyici bir hale getirmek için kullanılır. ET YEMEKLERİ Türk mutfağındaki et yemeklerinin çoğu kebaplar, köfteler ve tencere yemeklerinden oluşmaktadır. Kebaplar genellikle lokantalarda yenen ve ızgara yöntemiyle pişirilen yemeklerdir. Kebaplar arasında döner kebap en sevilenler arasındadır. Ayrıca Bursa iskender kebabı, Adana kebabı, Urfa kebabı ve pirzola da çok yaygındır. Köfteler, kıymanın, ekmek içi, soğan ve çeşitli baharatlarla yoğurulmasıyla hazırlanır. Köfteler, ızgara, fırınlama, kızartma veya sulu yemek olarak yapılabilir. Akçaabat köftesi, İnegöl köftesi, Tekirdağ köftesi yurt çapında en çok sevilen köfteler arasındadır. SEBZE YEMEKLERİ Türk mutfağı sebze yemekleri açısından da çok zengindir. Dolmalar ve etli sebze bunların en meşhurlarındandır. Etli fasulye, karnıyarık, etli kabak, etli bezelye, etli türlü, etli mercimek ve nohut, etli ıspanak, lahana ve pırasa dâhil çok sayıda yemek mevcuttur. Aynı zamanda birçok sebze ızgara yöntemiyle ve kızartılarak pişirilebilir. HAMUR İŞLERİ Lahmacun, etli ekmek, pide, mantı ve börekler, Türk mutfağının en sevilen hamur işleri arasındadır. Ayrıca pilav ve makarnalar da bu sınıfa katıldığında çok geniş bir çeşitlilik ortaya çıkar. SOĞUK VE SICAK İÇECEKLER Dünyanın her yerinde sevilen gazlı içecekler ve meyve sularının yanı sıra Türk mutfağının kendine has içecekleri de mevcuttur. Yoğurdun sulandırılmasıyla yapılan ayran tamamen Türkiye'ye özgü bir içecektir. Bunun dışında şalgam suyu ve şerbet de Türkiye'nin kendine özgü soğuk içecekleri arasındadır. Sıcak içecekler arasında Türk kahvesinin ve Türk çayının özel bir yeri vardır. Türk kahvesi kabaca çekilmiş kahvenin cezve denilen uzun saplı kaplar içinde pişirilmesiyle hazırlanır. Dünya çapında ün kazanmış olan Türk kahvesi fincan denilen küçük bardaklar içinde servis edilir. TATLILAR Türk mutfağı tatlılar açısından oldukça zengindir. Baklava, kadayıf, lokma gibi hamurlu tatlılar; muhallebi, keşkül, kazandibi, sütlaç gibi sütlü tatlılar; hoşaf ve kompostolar, revani, helva, aşure ve kabak tatlısı gibi tatlılar Türk mutfağında geniş yer tutar. Baklava, Türk mutfağının en tanınmış tatlıları arasındadır. Çok ince açılmış yufkanın arasına fındık, ceviz veya Antep fıstığı konulur ve fırında pişirilir. Bu karışım daha sonra şerbetle tatlandırılarak servise hazır hâle getirilir. Revani, irmik helvası gibi bazı tatlıların yapımında irmik kullanılır. Türkiye'deki dini inançlar arasında yer alan aşure; buğday, kuru üzüm, fasulye ve nohut gibi birçok bitkisel malzeme kullanılarak hazırlanan bir tatlıdır. Kabak tatlısı, bal kabağının üzerine şeker eklenerek pişirilir. Bu tatlı sonbahar ve kış aylarında tercih edilen Türk mutfağına has bir tatlıdır.
