Decided to make a rock climbing chicken for Ben. Found tiny carabiners online. Sockhead Slouch Hat: by Kelly McClure. Using Done Roving Yarns Frolicking Feet in colorway Irish Moss. Hibernating. Graphito: by Heidemarie Kaizer. Using Purls Before Swine Robusta in colorways Good Jeans (blue) and Toxic (pink). I finished the yoke and divided for the sleeves. I've knit about an inch of the body but I'm going to wash and block the yoke to be sure it fits and the patterning looks good. Ames Beanie: Stephanie Larson. Using Purls Before Swine Hometown Worsted in colorway Seaglass. I was about to start the decreases when I noticed I had crossed one of the cables the wrong way. I need to rip back. Socks: The Artful Ewe Clackamas. Finished first sock and about halfway through leg of second sock. Weaving Studio: I organized the closet and put all of Ben's stuff in there. I'd like him to take it, but all in good time. Kelly's Projects Finished the front on the Maple Vest. Need to wind yarn to start on the back. The ribbing pattern is fun and I love using my wooden cable needle. The fabric is heavy and a little silky. I've got my woven squares blanket to square (14 x 14) and I have only six more rows to sew on. It's been a little over a year since I started this project.  Plans for more chickens because my community needs some emotional support right now The first two went to our Mi Casa Undocuscholar Center and our Pride Center.  Stalled on Graphito by Heidemarie Kaiser while I've been working on the vest and the spinning and fleece prep.  Suint Bath Shetland Project: Finished carding both batches and now spinning them. Washed fiber is spun. Starting on the unwashed fiber and it is still quite greasy. I'll wind each bobbin into a center pull ball and ply each of them to compare the results. Winter Weave Along Going until March 31. Show us your projects in the Ravelry thread. If you aren't on Ravelry consider joining just so you can talk with us about your weaving! Challenge: Between now and January 1 do a kind of weaving that you haven't done before. Possibilities: New to you weave structure, different forms of loom, make something you never thought of making before, e.g. decorative braids or shoe laces, use a fiber you haven't used before, use a wet finishing method you haven't used before. End 2024 with a new weaving skill.

Purl2W2 Coconut Tree.  I've split off the sleeves and finished the body of Graphito by Heidemarie Kaiser. I still have to try it on before I decide to start the bottom ribbing or knit it a little longer. The yarns are Seismic Yarns Butter Silk as the contrast yarn and Invictus Yarns Seraphic as the main yarn–both fingering weight.  I started the Maple Vest to have something to knit in the car for the reunion trip. Interesting pattern. I joined under the arms and then split again after about two inches. I'm all the way down to the ribbing on the front panel. Had to rip back a couple of rows this morning because I made a mistake on the cable crosses in one of the pattern repeats.  Winter Weave Along Nov 3, 2024 - March 31, 2025 Join in with your weaving! Today, I talk with Amanda in the closet! We talk about what projects we've been working on, crafting for the holidays and giving gifts, and the new show she is working on, Calendar Girls. Here are the important links to check out: Sockhead Slouch Hat by Kelly McClure. Last year, my mom and my sister picked out a skein of yarn each for me to make them one. They were supposed to get them last year, but... they had a Christmas present this year instead! My sister chose a beautiful superwash merino and Tencel blend in blues with a little bit of darker teal. It's Wonderland Mad Hatter Yarn, in an old colorway. It was so nice to work with, although the Tencel was different than what I normally use. It has this really subtle but beautiful sheen to it that I don't see with merino and nylon blends. My mom chose a skein from Yarn Experiments, with every gemstone color imaginable in it! It really suits her though, because she wears all kinds of colors year round. My mom is pretty small, so I ended up making hers a teen size, as opposed to the adult small that I made my sister. My sister-in-law and mother-in-law also got to pick out a skein each from my stash, and I started on a hat for each of them, as well. SIL chose a grey and white/speckled large stripe skein by Daydream Dyeworks, in the color Sunset Cloudbreak. I bought this yarn a few years ago during a trip to Sun Dragon in Brevard, but it looks like the owner isn't selling anymore. My MIL chose a skein from Three Irish Girls Yarn Inc. in the Kaleidoscope color. It's a cream base, with lots of bright green, yellow, pink, and blue scattered throughout. I've already finished my SIL's hat, and I'm totally jealous! It turned out gorgeous! Be sure to check out Amanda's IG account, Beauty Truly Blent. She shows off her Ric Flair embroidery, as well as her Beard Bae series. She also takes custom orders! If you're local to WNC, be sure to look up Amanda and her shows! Episode 4: Crafting as Self Care

KnitSewCraft

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 3, 2022 20:42

What is self care? Society makes us think that it's long bubble baths, meditation, and peace. While all that is nice to have, self care is something I do just for myself, to help center me, and bring me back to myself. As a mom, wife, friend, small business person, I often get pulled in too many different directions, and I forget who I am. Crafting, on my own and for myself, is how I get back to being ME. Selfish knitting is my jam! We can get so burned out on making a life for others that we can often lose ourselves in the making. I invite you to FIND yourself in the making. What do you love about the items you're working with? Is the yarn color and texture something you enjoy working with? How do the hooks or needles feel in your hand? How are you sitting or standing? Is your body comfortable? What's the temperature around you? What does your environment sound like? Being present in the moment of your creating can become a self care practice. Why is it called practice? Because it's not self care perfection! One thing I've realized is that that time will never be mine unless I TAKE it. Unless I CLAIM IT as MINE. For example, my knitting time is in bed after I've put the girls down for bed. They will come in every 5 minutes needing something, and I tell them, "figure it out for yourself, I'm off the clock." I'm setting that boundary with them, which is so healthy for them and me. It shows them that I have boundaries that I won't allow them to cross, and that they can set their own boundaries. For me, it comes down to intentionality, communication, and presence in the time that you have. Not everyone can take hours of time alone, but can you take 15 minutes to practice being present, and to let your guard down to be yourself? Sometimes this can bring up uncomfortable feelings, I really understand this. Therapy is a helpful tool in this case. I'd like to invite you to share what you've done to practice self care in the coming week on Instagram. I'm working on my third Sockhead Slouch Hat, in Yarn Experiements Monkey Sock yarn, Supernova colorway. Bunnies will be up in my Etsy shop soon! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Special thanks to all of my listeners for waiting so long between episodes. As I posted on Instagram, I have been having a lot of vocal problems and I have been trying to rest my voice as much as possible outside of my job, where it's impossible to rest my voice at all. I'm going to do my best to keep up a regular schedule.   Program Mentions: Thanks to Knitting Daddy for sending me his Smoke in the City hat pattern. Special thanks to Vivian and Alyson from Keep Calm and Carry Yarn and the Pearl and Plum Etsy shop. Should we keep it going for a while? Call it?      PalKal 2018 Basic Rules Official cast on/bind off dates: June 15-August 15 One part of your project must be from a podcaster. The podcaster has to have produced an episode within the last year, so no retired podcasts, sorry. No yardage requirement. Your finished object can be entered more than once if more than one element is from a podcaster. You cannot reuse a project bag for multiple entries. The same applies for patterns, stitch markers, etc. Entries must be put into the finished object threads. Each element of the project that qualifies gets it's own entry. When you post an FO, please tell us what element qualifies for the PALKAL and which podcast you are supporting. Feel free to ask me questions on the Ravelry group forum for PALKAL Chatter.   The PalKal is coming up this summer! Are you interested in sponsoring the biggest and best Kal for the Actually Knitting Podcast? Here is where you can find information about levels of Sponsorship.   Fill out this Google Form and I'll get in touch with you about sponsoring the KAL. The PalKal runs from June 1-September 1, 2017 and it is all about supporting podcasters who are designers, indie dyers, bag makers, etc.     Color Confidence Class with Andrea Mowry at Black Mountain Yarn Shop.    ZK 2018   The Reviews Are In!  This episode I will be reviewing Vogue Knitting, The Ultimate Knitting Book.     Non-Knitting Segments    Meal Prep Madness Veggie and Beef Ramen   Other News and Notes   I finished several books since the last time I recorded.    Running updates:  I finished a 1/2 Marathon in March. Hi there! In this episode, I finished one sock (and finally worry about catching second sock syndrome), am about 20 minutes from finishing my Sockhead Slouch Hat. The Chuck is working out beautifully and we have a chat about being real and needing to let Springfest colors slide through your fingers as you create. I also chatter a bit about good friends, trips and a doggy saga. Find the show notes at Saltyjoknits.com
