Thom Francis reintroduces us to longtime local poet and open mic host Don Levy. Don was the featured reader at the Albany Poets Presents series at Restaurant Navona in 2017, where he shared his poems, told stories about his childhood, and answered questions from the audience. For this segment, Thom asks Don about one of the poems he read that night and some other issues of the day. — Don Levy has been part of the Albany poetry scene since 1988 when he first read at the QE2 open mic. He has read at various venues and events in the area, including The Albany Public Library, Poets in the Park, the Poets Speak Loud series at McGeary's, and The Social Justice Center. He has hosted a number of readings over the years, the first being at The Albany Art Gallery on Jefferson Street, to his last, a featured reader / open mic series called "Live From the Living Room," a straight-friendly reading held at The Pride Center of the Capital Region. Don was one of the editors of Open Mic: The Albany Anthology., a fantastic book that featured work from the poets who frequented the local open mics in the mid-90s. He published 2 chapbooks with local artist Kevin Bruce: How Green Was My Big Eden, a collection of gay fantasy poems, and Super Queer Poet Saves the Day. On January 18, 2017, Don read his poem "Mike Pence Goes to Hamilton" at the Albany Poets Presents event at Restaurant Navona in Albany. In our conversation we talk about where the idea for that poem came from, recent online outrage over major companies supporting LGBTQ+ causes, "wokeness," and using poetry as social commentary.

Decided to make a rock climbing chicken for Ben. Found tiny carabiners online. Sockhead Slouch Hat: by Kelly McClure. Using Done Roving Yarns Frolicking Feet in colorway Irish Moss. Hibernating. Graphito: by Heidemarie Kaizer. Using Purls Before Swine Robusta in colorways Good Jeans (blue) and Toxic (pink). I finished the yoke and divided for the sleeves. I've knit about an inch of the body but I'm going to wash and block the yoke to be sure it fits and the patterning looks good. Ames Beanie: Stephanie Larson. Using Purls Before Swine Hometown Worsted in colorway Seaglass. I was about to start the decreases when I noticed I had crossed one of the cables the wrong way. I need to rip back. Socks: The Artful Ewe Clackamas. Finished first sock and about halfway through leg of second sock. Weaving Studio: I organized the closet and put all of Ben's stuff in there. I'd like him to take it, but all in good time. Kelly's Projects Finished the front on the Maple Vest. Need to wind yarn to start on the back. The ribbing pattern is fun and I love using my wooden cable needle. The fabric is heavy and a little silky. I've got my woven squares blanket to square (14 x 14) and I have only six more rows to sew on. It's been a little over a year since I started this project.  Plans for more chickens because my community needs some emotional support right now The first two went to our Mi Casa Undocuscholar Center and our Pride Center.  Stalled on Graphito by Heidemarie Kaiser while I've been working on the vest and the spinning and fleece prep.  Suint Bath Shetland Project: Finished carding both batches and now spinning them. Washed fiber is spun. Starting on the unwashed fiber and it is still quite greasy. I'll wind each bobbin into a center pull ball and ply each of them to compare the results. Winter Weave Along Going until March 31. Show us your projects in the Ravelry thread. If you aren't on Ravelry consider joining just so you can talk with us about your weaving! Challenge: Between now and January 1 do a kind of weaving that you haven't done before. Possibilities: New to you weave structure, different forms of loom, make something you never thought of making before, e.g. decorative braids or shoe laces, use a fiber you haven't used before, use a wet finishing method you haven't used before. End 2024 with a new weaving skill.

Here's Jen's story from her website: https://turtleshelterproject.org/jensstory "My addiction led me to being homeless on several occasions throughout my life, and during that time I personally knew seven people who froze to death. When I first learned about this lifesaving technology, my mind flooded with ideas on how many people's lives this could save. I'd recently been homeless during an extreme winter. It had been one of the coldest winters Utah had suffered in a long time, so the misery of surviving the bitter cold was still very fresh in my mind. While I was homeless I remember feeling the chill all the way to my bones. I couldn't even think or function. It completely zapped me of my energy so much that I was losing my will to live. Everything felt beyond overwhelming. Simple tasks, like finding a bathroom, seemed to feel like huge obstacles. The crazy thing about it was: I had a car I was living in; I had a storage unit I could hang out in during the day and at night; and I had an income that was sufficient for my needs. But being homeless completely broke me - even with all of the resources I had available to me.

I began thinking that if homelessness crushed me, even with all that I had, then what would it do to someone who had much less, or even nothing?  I wanted to do something to help people with this burden. When I learned about foam clothing, I knew without a doubt that God was telling me -"THIS IS HOW YOU CAN HELP!"

After a lot of prayer and asking God to put the right people in my path, I started talking to everyone about my desire to make foam clothing for the homeless. Eventually I told the right person and that is how I met Marian Edmonds-Allen. At the time Marian, an ordained minister, was the executive director for the Utah Pride Center. Prior to that she had served as the Executive Director of OUTreach Resource Centers and in 2015 was named a Petra Fellow for her work with LGBTQ homeless youth.   Marian was particularly interested in my idea for getting foam clothing into the hands of the homeless and arranged a meeting to hear more. But it was still just an idea.  The truth is I had no idea how to make the project happen, and at the time I had only been clean and sober for 7 months.  Things were put on hold for a while because Marian took a new job at Parity in New York and resigned from the Pride Center.  I had been in drug rehab, but I needed to finish getting clean, sober, and stable.  My recovery sponsor kept telling me that this was God's project, not mine, and I needed to let go and let God make this happen in HIS time.

After about 2 years, in January 2017, God led me to Angela Roth.  Angela is someone who not only knows how to create a pattern but can sew like a rock star! Coincidentally, when I met her she had been praying for an opportunity to use her sewing and patterning talents to do something truly meaningful for people with a genuine need.  We teamed up and started the Turtle Shelter Project! We decided to make vests because we thought a simple vest would be able to keep a person's core warm.  If your core is warm, the rest of you stays warm longer.  We came up with a vest pattern that would be fairly easy for volunteers to make and keep production cost down.  After purchasing materials for 50 vests, we had only spent $30 for each one. The goal was to use labor donated by volunteers. This would give people the opportunity to serve in any capacity, whether it be time or money, and to truly do something meaningful that can help save lives.

Between September 2017 and January of 2018, with the help of many volunteers, we produced 50 TSP vests.  We handed some out to people experiencing homelessness to do some field testing for us and let us know how they worked.  The response has been excellent!  As a result of their feedback, we have made improvements to the vests.  We have added hoods, pockets, and a sturdy belt to help them fit better. We have also used some of the vests to do field testing by ourselves and friends and family who were willing. The results have been very encouraging!!! We want these vests to go to people living outdoors or who don't have access to shelters, because they are the ones who need this technology the most.  The vests are called "Turtle Shelters" because they are a portable shelter - just like a turtle taking its shelter with it.  Wearing a Turtle Shelter Vest makes having a source of heat a nicety, but not a necessity because the foam insulation in the vest will harness the body's heat and conserve it.  The vests are very well made to provide durability, wind resistance, insulation, and comfort.  They are a very effective way to help provide life-saving warmth."

Trailblazing trans lawmaker Rep. Taylor Small on fighting anti-LGBTQ+ attacks and being 'a beacon of hope'

LGBTQ+ rights are under attack throughout the country. Nearly 500 bills targeting LGBTQ+ people have been proposed in the U.S. to date, including in every state in New England. Eighteen Republican-controlled states have so far passed laws banning gender affirming health care, affecting 1 in 4 transgender youth. In Montana, State Rep. Zooey Zephyr, who is transgender, was ousted from the Republican-led House of Representatives last week for her passionate statements objecting to a ban on hormone treatments and surgical care for transgender children. Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte signed the bill into law last week, despite pleas from his son David, who identifies as nonbinary. In Nebraska, state Senator Megan Hunt is being investigated for allegedly having a conflict of interest for her opposition to a law that would ban gender-affirming health care. Her supposed conflict? She is the mother of a transgender child. The American Academy of Pediatrics and other leading medical organizations support gender affirming care and warn that bans pose serious health risks to young people.Rep. Taylor Small, 29, is among just 8 out transgender state legislators in the country, and is the first out trans legislator in Vermont. She was elected in 2020 to represent Winooski. A graduate of Colchester High School and the University of Vermont, Small is also education program manager at the Pride Center of Vermont, where we had this conversation. Small was named a 2022 Politician of Year by One Young World, an international youth leadership organization based in the U.K.Small said that anti-LGBTQ+ laws – from barring trans and nonbinary youth from participating in school sports, to book bans, to criminalizing gender-affirming health care – “are killing our youth. They are showing them that there is no hope for their future where they can be thriving trans adults.”By contrast, she said that she and Montana Rep. Zooey Zephyr “are trying to show that beacon of hope that you can still be involved, that you do have leadership qualities, and not only can you participate, but you can have a fulfilling life.”“This is nothing new that we've seen in politics…going after and targeting specific groups of people,” Small asserted. “What group does the general public have a lot of ignorance around and have a lot of questions? That is the trans community. As we see this growing recognition and visibility, it also comes with that backlash of ‘That is not what I grew up with, that is not my understanding of gender.'”As other states restrict access to reproductive and gender-affirming health care, the Vermont legislature has passed two reproductive “shield bills,” S.37 and H.89, which protect doctors and patients who give and receive this care, respectively.“Vermont is saying that we're putting this shield around our border, that as long as you are in our state, as a provider or as a patient, that you are protected by our laws and recognizing that gender affirming care and reproductive health care are legally protected,” she said.Small cautioned that vigilance is required to stop anti-LGBTQ attacks in Vermont. “It absolutely could happen here,” she said, citing anti-trans incidents in Randolph and Burlington.“As long as we continue to engage as leaders and engage in these difficult conversations, I think we can prevent what is happening in Montana, what is happening in Oklahoma and in Tennessee, from happening right here in our own state.”

In July, a bill designed to protect same-sex marriages passed the US House of Representatives with bipartisan support. Forty-seven Republicans joined House Democrats in passing the Respect for Marriage Act. Shortly thereafter, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that he was working to drum up sufficient Republican support in the Senate to pass the bill. Following weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations, Schumer announced in mid-September that the vote would be delayed until after the midterm elections. To make sense of what is happening with marriage equality, we put together a two-part podcast series, featuring conversations with policymakers, experts, and advocates. In part one of this series, Rockefeller Institute Fellow Heather Trela, Senior Policy Analyst Leigh Wedenoja, and Pride Center of the Capital Region Executive Director Nate Gray answer questions like: If the US Supreme Court ruled in 2015 to legalize marriage equality nationwide, why is there now a renewed push for legislating this issue? What is the legislative and judicial history of marriage equality and how does that inform the provisions in the Respect for Marriage Act? And how is the recent uncertainty surrounding marriage equality affecting members of the LGBTQ+ community? In part two, we draw some political parallels to the current moment with a look back at the push for marriage equality in New York in 2011. To understand the political calculations and consequences of a Republican “yes” vote on this issue, Rockefeller Institute President Bob Megna talks with Senator Steve Saland, one of four Republican senators who crossed the aisle to say “aye” to the Marriage Equality Act.
