Episode 494: Why Online Summits Are Failing to Deliver Real Results (and The Change That Creates Win-Win-Win Momentum)

Amplify Your Success

Online summits have been a staple list building and authority boosting strategy for over a decade. Not only do summits help hosts grow their audience, a well-run virtual event gives speakers a platform to share their expertise, and create opportunities for attendees to learn from a variety of experts in one place. But lately I've noticed that many summits are experiencing diminishing returns. So, why are so many of them falling flat? In Episode 494 of Amplify Your Success Podcast, I talk about a pattern I've been noticing after participating in hundreds of online events over the last fifteen years. Registrations are shrinking, participation is low, speakers are seeing diminishing returns, and audiences are walking away without a lot of information, but not true transformation. This isn't about online summits being ineffective. In fact, I'm still a big believer in virtual events as a powerful visibility strategy. The challenge is that many events have shifted from creating meaningful transformation to being a transaction. The focus becomes registrations, list growth, and exposure while the deeper opportunity for connection, collaboration, and community gets left behind. In this episode, I explore what's possible for hosts, speakers, and attendees if the model changes as we move into a new era of business built on belonging, relationships, and shared experiences. If you've hosted an online summit, spoken at virtual events, or found yourself signing up for event after event without seeing meaningful results, this conversation will help you look at the role of virtual events differently and identify what creates lasting momentum instead of temporary attention. Key Takeaways: [00:00] Why many online summits generate registrations but fail to create meaningful momentum. [03:59] How the visibility strategies that worked in previous years are beginning to lose effectiveness. [07:17] Why prioritizing more speakers over a better attendee experience often creates overwhelm instead of value. [09:33] The hidden cost of relying on speakers to continuously build event audiences. [10:16] How speaker saturation contributes to declining engagement and weaker event outcomes. [12:56] Why collaboration between speakers is often the missing ingredient in virtual events. [14:29] What declining participation rates reveal about attendee behavior and event fatigue. [15:26] How information overload prevents attendees from fully engaging with event content. [18:25] Why community and belonging are becoming more important than information alone. [20:05] The role connection, interaction, and relationships play in creating transformation. [21:51] How attendees can get more value from events by actively engaging instead of passively consuming. [23:24] Why hosts need to focus on depth, curation, and meaningful experiences over bigger numbers. [25:07] How community-driven experiences create stronger opportunities, collaborations, and long-term growth.   Resources Mentioned in This Episode:   Join me on Substack here to discover what's working now as our industry continues to evolve. American businesses waste 25-35% of the energy they use. So why aren't more business owners doing something about it? For most, the problem is too complex and too expensive — there's no single fix, there are 30 or 40, and calculating the ROI on all of them is no easy task. That's where Budderfly comes in. Budderfly is an energy-as-a-service company with a beautifully simple premise: they take over a business's energy bill entirely — funding all the upgrades at their own risk, and pocketing a margin on the savings. It's a win-win-win situation for the company, the grid, and the planet. On this episode of Everybody in the Pool, Molly sits down with Budderfly's founder and CEO Al Subbloie to get a behind-the-scenes look into this unique business model. We talk about:Why Budderfly targets franchise businesses, and how their "copy-paste" model unlocks financing and scaleThe four pillars of commercial energy waste: HVAC, lighting, refrigeration, and intelligent energy managementHow Budderfly can lower a companies' utility bill and upgrade their equipment with zero upfront cost to the customerWhy Al intentionally aligned cost savings with carbon reduction — so customers get climate impact whether it's their priority or notWhat a virtual power plant actually is, and why focusing on small “behind-the-meter” energy adjustments actually matters for the gridHow Budderfly is building one of the largest distributed demand-response networks in the US — and why that's increasingly valuable in an era of AI data center demandTheir vision for working directly with hyperscalers and utilities as grid pressure intensifiesLinks:Budderfly: https://www.budderfly.com/All episodes: https://www.everybodyinthepool.com/Subscribe to the Everybody in the Pool newsletter: https://www.mollywood.co/Become a member for the ad-free version of the show: https://everybodyinthepool.supercast.com/ Hosted on Acast. Jeff Korzenik, the chief economist at a major US bank, explains how predicting a labor shortage in the US led him to discover the growing movement around "second chance" hiring of people with criminal records.  His passion for this work led him to write "Untapped Talent," a book that explains to companies the benefits of this type of hiring and offers a blueprint of how best to do it.  Jeff describes how second chance hiring can transform lives and communities.    Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Jeff Korzenik's Work  This chapter introduces Jeff Korzenik, Chief Economist and author of Untapped Talent, highlighting his unique background as a bank executive focused on hiring people with criminal records.   03:14 From Economics to Second Chances  Jeff Korzenik explains how his work on second-chance hiring evolved from his economic research into labor force challenges, initially focusing on the opioid epidemic.   05:51 The Staggering Numbers of Incarceration  Jeff outlines the immense scale of incarceration and criminal records in the United States, emphasizing how the U.S. is an outlier globally.   09:05 Creating Hope in Prison Jeff discusses the inherent unfairness of a system where a prison sentence can become a life sentence due to employment discrimination. He shares how his book, 'Untapped Talent,' is distributed to incarcerated individuals to instill hope and remind them that they are a valuable resource, not a burden, through the generous support of others.  14:15 Employer Barriers and Solutions  Jeff addresses the common objections employers have to hiring individuals with criminal records: safety/liability, employee quality, and reputation risk. He explains that these concerns are valid but manageable through intelligent, business-based decisions, advocating for transparent and supportive hiring practices.  17:55 The Loyalty of Second Chance Hires  Jeff highlights that successful second-chance hiring relies on traditional hiring models, adapted to understand and support candidates with criminal records.   23:23 Virtuous Cycle of Success  Jeff explains the 'snowballing effect' of success in second-chance hiring, where companies known for fair chance employment receive high-quality referrals and build strong community relationships.   26:08 Empathy and Boundaries in Hiring  Jeff advocates for people to visit prisons to humanize the incarcerated and understand their experiences.   33:28 Challenges Post-Release and 'Ban the Box'  Jeff illustrates the immense hurdles individuals face immediately after release from prison, from securing basic necessities to navigating a changed world with minimal support. He explains why state-mandated 'ban the box' policies have often been ineffective, and instead suggests that voluntary removal of the box by truly committed employers sends a powerful, positive signal to job seekers.  39:17 Impact on Fellow Employees and Society  Jeff discusses how to integrate second-chance hires into a company's workforce, emphasizing that transparency and context are key to addressing potential employee concerns.   43:43 Untapped Potential and Future Optimism  Jeff expresses immense optimism about the future of second-chance hiring, despite being in the very early stages of leveraging this vast talent pool.   49:10 Resources and Multi-Generational Impact  Jeff provides resources for companies interested in second-chance hiring, including the Second Chance Business Coalition and SHRM's 'Getting Talent Back to Work' certification. He underscores the profound multi-generational benefits of fair chance employment, emphasizing its role in breaking cycles of incarceration and fostering a virtuous cycle of community safety and economic prosperity.

It's February of 1980, and Dale Earnhardt is hungry to return to victory lane. The Osterlund-2 car hasn't brought home a win since David Pearson filled in for Dale at the Southern 500 the previous year. Plus, with a new contract and sponsorship comes expectations, so needless to say, he's eager to hold up his end of the bargain. Thankfully, he won't have to wait long, as he overcomes adversity at Atlanta for his first speedway win and follows it up with a repeat at Bristol. He quickly goes from a potential flash-in-the-pan, one-time winner to etching his name into the NASCAR history books. But racing is a humbling sport, and his jubilation won't last long. More engine problems and a lack of speed would relegate him back to the middle of the pack, and that pressure to perform would build up again. Unfortunately, this time, the pressure pushes Dale to make a blunderous mistake on the opening lap of the spring Martinsville event, and he has a run-in with a fella you never want to cross: King Richard Petty.FanDuel: Must be 21+ and present in select states (for Kansas, in affiliation with Kansas Star Casino) or 18+ and present in D.C.

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2025 10:57

第一部叫 Zootopia(动物乌托邦),剧情比较理想化,第二部改成 Zootropolis(动物大都市),可能剧情也会更加真实、复杂、充满挑战。 它很容易让人联想到fast-food chain(快餐连锁店)Subway(赛百味)。 02. 声音的接力:Adrian如何成为青岛地铁的“代言人”Adrian与地铁播音的缘分始于messages in a groupchat on wechat(微信群聊)。 而在法国音乐节当天,主播翩翩和Adrian同在现场,shared the same beautiful night,包括the sunset(晚霞), the cool sea breeze(夏日的凉风)and the music。 从七岁第一次握筷子的小孩,到the voice of the Qingdao Metro(青岛地铁的“声音名片”),Adrian的旅程充满奇妙色彩。他表示:“It really has been an amazing adventure(这真的是一场精彩的冒险)”。

Tesco Media's Director Strategy, Proposition & Measurement, Florian Clemens, explains how a focus on win-win-win outcomes (value for shopper, advertiser, and retailer) guides the strategy for Tesco's retail media business. The discussion centres on measurement, omnichannel innovation, the legacy of Clubcard data, and Tesco's position as a market maker in UK retail. Practical examples highlight transparent loyalty incentives, creative brand partnerships, and the challenge of delivering differentiation on a large scale. The conversation closes with what's next for Tesco: building truly omnichannel, science-driven media and exploring the real-world impact of AI on habits and shopping behaviour. Points of Note on Tesco Media •Tesco holds 28% of UK supermarket sales, reaches nearly every UK household, and operates at a scale matched by few retailers. •Clubcard's integration with Dunnhumby's data science powers Clubcard Challenges; over 80% of in-store revenue is attributed to identified shoppers. •Tesco Media runs as an internal joint team: Tesco, Dunnhumby, and external talent. •More than 25 ad products: coupons, search, store screens, Clubcard Challenges - designed for relevance, transparency, and incremental value. Key Quotes "This win-win-win needs to be right for the shopper, right for the advertiser, and right for the retailer. That just takes longer to figure out, but it's what we're building" “Clubcard changed the face of British retail… suddenly it was about data-driven engagement.” “It's only a real win if it's truly better for people. I don't think we've seen that at scale - yet.” “If I started making a list of all our sources of inventory, turning delivery vans into ad products would have been number 35… but being a UK-focused decision maker lets us try it if it feels right.” “With Clubcard Challenges, customers choose which brands to engage more deeply with, and advertisers only pay if people convert - a transparent, zero-risk proposition.” “Tier-one platforms can build direct relationships. Further down the list, you have to aggregate for economic reasons - otherwise agencies simply don't have the bandwidth.”   Episode Running Order • 00:00 — Introductions, context, Tesco's leading market position • 01:00 — Tesco Media's joint strategy, scale, and data science • 04:00 — Clubcard's legacy and retail media's evolution • 07:00 — Team structure: Tesco, Dunnhumby, and new hires • 09:00 — The win-win-win foundation; Clubcard Challenges as example • 12:00 — Differentiating Tesco Media from a decade of programmatic and performance marketing • 17:00 — Brand partnerships: creative campaigns (Christmas grottos, branded vans) • 20:00 — Complexity in omnichannel: 25+ ad products, need for self-optimisation • 23:00 — Future vision: scientific omnichannel planning and implementing AI in commerce • 29:00 — Price sensitivity, habit, and the real test for AI and automation • 34:00 — Closing thoughts, next steps, and invitation for a return discussion on AI   --  Run time: 38 minutes INFORMATION: [

Beware of another Silicon Valley Win-Win-Win: Can users, publishers and tech companies really all benefit from the AI revolution?

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 31, 2025 45:32

When somebody says “win-win” in Silicon Valley, check your pockets. It's usually some elaborate prelude to a sales pitch. And the only thing dodgier than a two-way win is the “win-win-win” narrative that my friend Keith Teare is selling this week. “User, Publishers and AI: Everybody Wins” is the title of Keith's That Was The Week newsletter this week. And to be fair, what he's selling is the dream of an AI world in which the publishers, consumers and manufacturers of information all win. Who wouldn't want that? Our conversation this week is built around the AI ethics showdown by Y Combinator and Andreessen Horowitz which has shaken Silicon Valley this week. The battle centers on whether AI agents should identify themselves when accessing publisher content - a seemingly technical question that reveals broader tensions about who controls information in the age of artificial intelligence. Y Combinator's Garry Tan called new authentication requirements an "axis of evil" while Andreessen Horowitz's Martin Casado argued they represent common sense infrastructure. But the ever-optimistic Keith (who seems to believe that all progress is good, even for its victims) thinks everyone can win - users, publishers and tech companies. Presumably even Garry Tan and Martin Casado. If you believe that, then I might have some beautiful, no-risk Las Vegas beachfront real-estate for you. 1. The "Axis of Evil" Fight Is Really About Anonymous Access When Y Combinator's Garry Tan attacked Cloudflare and Browserbase's AI authentication system as an "axis of evil," he revealed Silicon Valley's preference for consequence-free data harvesting. The technical dispute over AI agent identification masks a deeper question: should AI companies remain anonymous when accessing publisher content, or must they become accountable?2. Publishers Need Influence, Not Just Traffic The conversation exposed a crucial distinction between advertising models that require massive scale and sponsorship models that reward targeted influence. Quality audiences matter more than raw pageviews - an insight that could reshape how content creators think about monetization in the AI era.3. The "Virtuous Circle" Depends on AI Companies Acting Against Self-Interest Keith's vision of AI systems surfacing attribution links back to original sources requires companies to voluntarily complicate their user experience. Why would ChatGPT or Claude choose to send users away to read original articles when seamless summarization is their core value proposition?4. "Bad Publishers Deserved to Fail" Sidesteps Structural Questions Keith's argument that only inferior publishers lost to digital disruption ignores how entire categories of valuable journalism - particularly local news - faced structural economic challenges regardless of quality. This reveals the limitations of purely market-based explanations for technological displacement.5. Trust May Be Irrelevant in the Post-Truth Era My observation that "nobody cares about trust anymore" challenges the entire premise of authentication systems. If users don't demand source verification, then the economic incentives for Keith's proposed "trusted third party" infrastructure may not exist.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication.

On the next Treasured Truth, as we continue to look at how we are victorious through Christ, Pastor Ford will remind us that we all have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God. That fact made us unqualified to come before a Holy God. But then Jesus gave us His name. And when He gave us His name, we became qualified. And now, because He has claimed us and we longer have our own names, we can do everything in His name. Learn more about how we are more than conquerors through Christ on the next Treasured Truth. On the next Treasured Truth, Pastor Ford will remind us why we need to have God’s purpose for our lives in mind when we pray. If we are praying for something that is not attached to the purpose of God, then we shouldn’t expect it to happen. He’ll explain that the questions we ought to ask when we want something from God are these: Will this glorify the person of Jesus Christ? Will this fulfill the purpose of Jesus Christ?
