Váry Nillánál a kreativitás kiskora óta fontos szerepetjátszik az életében: tehetséges volt rajz tantárgyból, fogékony volt a zenei világra, és már tizenévesen szeretett a fényképezőgéppel dokumentálni (családtagokat, családi eseményeket, kedvenceket, stb.). Ennek ellenére szülői döntésre közgazdasági szakközépiskolában folytatta tanulmányait, ezt követően pedig kisebb kitérőktől eltekintve szinte mindig pénzügyi területen dolgozott. 2024 januárban költözött Ausztriába, Salzburgba. Egyik fő hobbija a fényképészet, különösen sportfotózás, azon belül is kedvenc témák: futók, futással kapcsolatos események; kooperáció más fotósokkal. A fotózáshoz a korábbi szeretett hobbin, a futáson keresztül vezetett az út. Egészségügyi okok miatt orvosi javaslatra eltanácsolták a versenyszerű futástól, de hogy a versenyek közelében maradhasson, önkéntes rendezői feladatokat vállalt, amelynek során felkértek, hogy készítsen képeket a mezőnyről. Ekkor szeretett bele újra a fotózásba és kezdte komolyan venni, hogy hosszú távon ezzel is foglalkozhasson. Futóként is szívesen vett részt jótékonysági kampányokban, volt guide félmaratonokon, önkénteskedett jótékonysági futóeseményeken, de fotósként is örömmel áll jó ügyek mellé. Futóként szívesen vett részt váltó csapattagjaként is versenyeken. Éveken át volt support csapattag futóversenyeken, azaz segítette a futót frissítésben, kísérésben, jellemzően ultratávokon, világversenyeken is. Icebox desserts are no-bake or low-bake desserts that assemble quickly and set in the refrigerator. Plus they have a unique history dating to when Americans were modernizing their kitchens and embracing electricity. Bobbie Lloyd is the CEO and chief baking officer at Magnolia Bakery. She joins us to talk about some of the recipes in the new cookbook The Magnolia Bakery Handbook of Icebox Desserts: Classic and Creative Icebox Desserts with a Magnolia Bakery Twist. She'll also share how to adapt them, and field listener's calls and questions.Magnolia Bakery's Famous Banana PuddingBanana pudding has been around since the late 1800s, when faster steam ships meant bananas could make their way to US ports. It was first made with sponge cake, but by the 1920s, cake was replaced with vanilla wafers. For this recipe, I use Nabisco Nilla wafers and strongly recommend you don't make any substitutions to ensure you get the same crave-worthy texture of this iconic dessert.MAKES 4 to 5 quarts; serves up to 16INGREDIENTSPART ONE1 (3.4oz) package instant vanilla pudding mix, preferably Jell-O1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk1 ¼ cups (300g/10.6oz) ice-cold waterPART TWO3 cups (720g/24oz) heavy creamASSEMBLY1 (11oz) box Nilla wafers4 large or 6 small bananas, slicedINSTRUCTIONSMAKE PART ONE: Place the pudding mix into a 4-quart bowl and set aside.In a 2-quart liquid measuring cup or bowl with a spout, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk and water until smooth.Slowly pour the liquid into the bowl with the pudding mix while whisking constantly until thoroughly combined. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl with a spatula and stir until smooth. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator for a minimum of 30 minutes. The pudding can be made ahead up to 24 hours. MAKE PART TWO: In a stand mixer fitted with the whisk, whip the heavy cream on medium speed for 1 minute, until the cream starts to thicken, then increase the speed to medium-high and whip until stiff peaks form. Be careful not to overwhip.With the mixer running on low speed, add the pudding mixture a spoonful at a time. Mix until well blended and no streaks of pudding remain. Scrape the bottom and sides of the bowl. TO ASSEMBLE: Select either a trifle bowl, a 9 × 13-inch pan, a wide glass bowl with a 4- to 5-quart capacity, or individual bowls.If using a trifle bowl, spread one-quarter of the pudding over the bottom of the bowl, then layer with one-third of the cookies and enough banana slices to cover the cookie layer. Repeat the layering twice more. End with a final layer of pudding. Garnish the top with additional vanilla wafer cookies or cookie crumbs.Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 4 to 6 hours. The cookies should be tender when poked with a knife. Go to the store and buy a few boxes of vanilla (NOT banana) pudding mix (plus milk and whatever else you need for the pudding), bananas, and a box or two of Nilla wafers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nilla) or your local equivalent. 2. Cut the bananas into circular pieces roughly the same thickness of the wafers. (You know, normal sliced banana thickness) 3. Mix the vanilla pudding per the instructions on the box. 4. Layer the wafers, sliced bananas, and vanilla pudding into a big rectangular pyrex pan in any configuration your heart desires. I recommend a layer of wafers on the bottom. If you want to get fancy, sprinkle some crumbled up wafers on the top. 5. Cover the dish with saran wrap and put in the fridge for however long the pudding needs to finish setting (an hour or two ought to do it). 6. Serve with a pancake spatula in tiramisu style slices, or just use a big spoon to scoop it out. Lee - A Journey with Whiskey Friends Introduction: We recently had the pleasure of delving into the world of bourbon with a diverse group of whiskey enthusiasts, known as the Whiskey Friends. These fine folks came together to sample a generous donation of bourbon, courtesy of an anonymous benefactor. We kicked off our journey with a bottle of Elmer T. Lee, a 2017 vintage, and what a journey it was. Appearance: Elmer T. Lee 2017 arrived in our glasses with a friendly 90 proof, setting the stage for an approachable, yet exciting bourbon experience. The color was a lovely amber, teasing our senses with the promise of flavors to come. Nose: With a collective nose for this bourbon, we discovered an enticing blend of scents. There were the familiar sweet bourbon notes, akin to unrolled saltine crackers, accompanied by hints of rosewater and a subtle touch of Nilla wafers. The cherry wood aroma was unmistakable, providing a delicate, fruity overtone. Palate: Sipping this bourbon brought a delightful mix of flavors to the forefront. The cherry wood we detected on the nose blossomed into a luscious cherry profile on the palate. A touch of apricot added an unexpected, yet delightful twist, resulting in a harmonious blend of fruitiness and depth. The mouthfeel was thick, like honeycomb, with minimal heat, allowing us to savor the experience. Finish: As we continued to savor Elmer T. Lee, the finish revealed more layers of flavor. It offered a subtle spiciness, akin to tobacco with a sprinkling of almonds. The hint of age was there, adding to the complexity of the experience. Conclusion: Elmer T. Lee 2017 was a true delight to explore. Its balance of fruity notes, the elegance of cherry wood, and the gentle heat of a 90 proof bourbon made for a well-rounded experience. Though its retail price of $40 was reasonable, the secondary market prices of $200 to $400 demonstrated the high demand for this particular vintage. As it often goes in the world of whiskey, treasures like this one become increasingly sought after with time. This bourbon transported us to a place where we could appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry behind the spirit. Hi Bakers! There used to be a cookie called Lemon Coolers that I loved when I was a kid. It was like a powdered sugar-covered Nilla wafer with lemon flavor. I ate a lot of these and I was usually a sugar-covered mess when I was done. This is not the cookie you can sneak eat in the pantry…the sugar gives you away every time! Now is your chance to try and love another beautiful citrus-flavored shortbread. These cookies are easy to make and hard to screw up! I love giving them away during the Winter holidays when they stand out in a sea of gingerbread and fudge! They are just as tasty in Summer with a bowl of fresh fruit or ice cream! I hope you make and enjoy these time and again like I do! - Carolyn Gluten-Free Lime Meltaways Adapted from the recipe by Martha Stewart. This recipe was modified for gluten-free by changing the flour, adding sweet rice flour (for a bit more wheat flour feel), decreasing the butter by a tablespoon, and omitting the cornstarch since the blend of flour I love already contains it. Dry 1 3/4 cups plus 4 Tablespoons Cup4Cup Multipurpose flour 1 teaspoon Sweet Rice Flour 1/4 Teaspoon salt 3/4 cup minus 1 Tablespoon softened butter 1 cup confectioners sugar 3 tablespoons lime juice The zest of two limes Whisk dry ingredients together in a bowl and set aside. Cream butter and sugar in a medium-sized bowl until light and fluffy. Add lime juice and zest and mix thoroughly. Add dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Divide into two balls and roll into logs about 1.5 inches in diameter on pieces of parchment. Roll them up in paper and chill for at least one hour or freeze them if you want to bake them later. Preheat oven to 350F. Slice chilled logs into coin shapes about 1/8 inch thick and bake on parchment paper cut side down and one inch apart. Bake for about 12-14 minutes or until coins are barely browned but firm in the middle. Cool on a rack for 8 minutes and then roll or shake in powdered sugar while still warm. Return to the rack to cool fully. I like to stack my cooled cookies in muffin cups which seems to keep them from breaking and is a much easier way to store them.
