Award-winning storyteller in television, film, and literature, Matthew Weiner, is a recent graduate of the Hoffman Process. Matthew is the creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the television show, Mad Men. Matthew shares that his biggest fear in doing the Process was losing his creativity; if he healed his trauma, he'd no longer be creative. Now on the other side of the Process, Matthew knows his fear was unfounded because, through his deep work of transformation, he learned that making art is part of healing trauma. As a comedy writer, Matthew shares that often negative self-statements get a laugh. And yet, that inner negativity, including when it is pointed at ourselves, is, as Matthew says, "not sustainable." Releasing harmful negative patterns and the negative love we learned as children brings freedom and a lightness that is hard to imagine until you discover it within yourself. A particularly beautiful and wise reflection from Matthew comes when he speaks about childhood. He shares that, as children, we see ourselves as a "supporting player" in our parents' lives, not realizing that each of us is actually "the star" of our childhood. Toward the end, Matthew shares the importance of reflecting on his experience during the Process and after. Post-Process, people have told him he's different, his voice has changed and he's softer. Like many of our guests, Matthew sees value in this process of reflection through conversation on personal transformation. We know there is also great value in witnessing another's experience. We hope you enjoy this wise, reflective conversation with Matthew and Drew. More about Matthew Weiner: Matthew Weiner is a nine-time Emmy Award winner and five-time WGA Award-winning storyteller in television, film, and literature. Among his range of credits are two of television's most successful and critically lauded shows:  creator, executive producer, writer, and director on Mad Men, which was distinguished with the Peabody Award, and executive producer for The Sopranos. Weiner was also the creator, executive producer, writer, and director of the original contemporary anthology series, The Romanoffs, set in seven countries around the globe. Weiner's debut novel, Heather, The Totality, was published by Little, Brown and Company. You can discover more about Matthew Weiner here. As mentioned in this episode: Esopus Magazine article. Quote: “Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, I don't have anything on paper despite years of constant rejection. In showbiz, all bad news has come through agents and in the form of phone calls. Even early on. I don't know that I would have saved them if I had gotten them. They're like bad reviews for me, best skimmed through and then briefly obsessed over before being mentally discarded. I've come to realize rejection is now part of my process. I am not used to it by any means, nor do I expect it, but it both sharpens my resolve that my ideas are new and also drives me to professionally outlive the resistance of the gatekeepers. If I wait patiently they will either move on, reconsider, or become brave enough to try something new. Rejection, as painful as it is, is nothing more than a delay.“ - Matthew Weiner Mindful Self-Compassion (Kristin Neff and Chris Germer) Listen to Kristen Neff on the Hoffman Podcast. Helping children establish boundaries is important for developing friendships and maintaining positive social interactions. Boundaries help people set limits for themselves and honor limits set by others. In "Boundaries," three eight- and nine-year-old kids (Olivia, Izzy, and Wynter) define and discuss boundaries and help Qook-a-leekie and Link-a-deedle friends learn the importance of boundaries. They discover that understanding someone else's boundaries requires empathy, the ability to recognize others' feelings...and that takes practice. The role of  Qwee-vee the Qook-a-leekie is played by Ana Cruz Kayne and the role of Lexton the Link-a-deedle is played by Michael Cruz Kayne. Ana and Michael are siblings in real life, so they know a thing or two about boundaries.  Ana is an actress and writer, known for her performances in Barbie (2023), Little Women (2019), Jerry & Marge Go Large (2022), Painkiller (TV 2023), and Another Earth (2011). Our guest this week has worked in television, film, and theater. He's been nominated for two WGA Awards for Best Comedy Writing for his work on The Golden Girls and Roseanne, was a writer and producer on Gilmore Girls, co-wrote the Brady Bunch movies, and so much more. We welcome Stan Zimmerman to the show to talk about how he was running a television network from his bedroom at age 10, his experiences writing for both The Golden Girls and Roseanne, Gilmore Girls fandom, meeting Priscilla Presley and possibly the ghost of Elvis too! This was a great conversation with many great stories.  Stan's new book, The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore is the story of Stan Zimmerman, a gawky Jewish boy who dreamed of becoming a wildly successful actor, rich enough to build his own mansion in the Hollywood Hills. While the actor part didn't quite pan out, Stan found success as a writer, producer, director, and playwright, working on such shows as The Golden Girls, Roseanne, and Gilmore Girls. Accompanied by journal entries, The Girls details Stan's relationships with some of entertainment's most notable women, including Roseanne Barr, Lily Tomlin, Sandra Bernhard, Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel, and, of course, all four Golden Girls. The Girls: From Golden to Gilmore is a candid, funny, and sometimes poignant testimony about how a young boy turned his dream into reality. “I think what's interesting about healing, psychological healing, is there's always a narrative that helps. So sometimes when you go to therapy, and you tell a story, and in the story, you locate your despair, and it's a knot, and then with the therapist, you work through the knot, you feel better. And was all the pain really attendant to that knot? Or did you just kind of load up that knot with some of the despair that comes from being alive and then you kind of work through it and that story helps you live life better. And I think that's true also this idea of how we look at the different personality states and we can name them and we can give them ages and it's a story that helps us understand ourselves.” So says Akiva Goldsman, an Oscar, Golden Globe, and WGA-Award winning screenwriter whose credits include A Beautiful Mind, The Client, Batman Forever, A Time to Kill, Practical Magic, Cinderella Man, I Am Legend, The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, Insurgent, and I, Robot. He's on Pulling the Thread today, though, to talk about Apple TV+'s The Crowded Room, a psychological thriller starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried on which he was both the writer and the showrunner. So first, some warnings: Yes, there are spoilers, though in my opinion, nothing that will markedly change your experience of watching the show. In fact, knowing the back story made it easier for me to get through the first, very stressful episode. (It gets easier, and by episode three, I was riveted.) And also, a trigger warning: The Crowded Room and our conversation today explore childhood sexual abuse, which is also part of Akiva's personal history. Erin also conceived the drama Vida (Starz), produced the documentary Fatherless (Fusion), and executived the hell out of the iconic sketch series Portlandia (which won a Peabody and a bunch of other fancy statues) along with other comedy, dramedy and animated series.  Erin grew up in the basement theaters of downtown NYC, where she produced and performed in live comedy shows at venues like The Slipper Room and The Zipper Factory.  She started out as an actor, studying theater at Oberlin College, Meisner technique at Ward Studio, and improvisation at The Second City Training Center in New York. The more we hear about the Writer's Guild of America West, the more we wonder why book authors don't have something similar. Did you know that members of The Writer's Guild of America receive health insurance (good health insurance!), among many other benefits—all for 1.5% of the member's yearly profits? Plus, there's education on the (complicated!) issues, the proposed Anti-AI clause, and an infrastructure to keep writers healthy and happy and writing their best work. We also talk about the magic synergy of the writer's room, fun stories from behind the scenes, and how to prepare for your first writing job in Hollywood. Derek Santos Olson is a screenwriter who has worked in both film and TV. He wrote on the final two seasons of NBC/DirecTV's FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and was nominated for WGA Awards for both seasons. His other TV credits include ABC's THE UNUSUALS and CBS' HAWAII FIVE-O.   In film, he has sold original pitches and has done rewrite assignments in a variety of genres. He attended Yale University and has enjoyed teaching or tutoring in one capacity or another since shortly after his graduation.

We are so fortunate to have another Showrunner on the podcast. This time, Hank Steinberg. In 1997, Steinberg successfully sold the cable network HBO on 61*, a biographical drama about the legendary home-run race between Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle of the 1961 Yankees. The following year, Billy Crystal came aboard as a producer on the project and subsequently directed the film, starring Thomas Jane and Barry Pepper. 61* garnered 12 Emmy nominations, including Best Motion Picture for Television and Best Writing. Steinberg was also nominated for a WGA Award for the film. Steinberg then created the CBS show Without a Trace, which aired from September 26, 2002, to May 19, 2009. Without a Trace follows the cases of a Missing Persons Unit of the FBI in New York City. During his tenure as executive producer and show-runner, the show won several Emmy awards and a Golden Globe for lead actor Anthony LaPaglia, as well as earning a SAG and Humanitas nomination. Steinberg was executive producer and show-runner of Without a Trace for the first four seasons. Afterward, Steinberg created and was showrunner/executive producer of the ABC series The Nine, which he wrote with his sister, KJ Steinberg. The show ran for one season. Steinberg co-created and was executive producer of TNT's The Last Ship ,in 2014, which ran for five seasons. The Last Ship follows a naval destroyer crew, after a pandemic kills most of Earth's population. Steinberg went on to create and serve as an executive producer of the ABC American legal drama For Life, which premiered February 11, 2020.The series is a fictional legal and family drama inspired by the life of convict turned attorney Isaac Wright, Jr. The success of the show led his Channel Road Productions company to an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. Most recently, Steinberg landed a straight to series order with Fox for DOC, an adaptation of the Italian series of the same name.  Steinberg will executive produce under his Channel Road Productions. In this episode, we talk about: • His straight to series FOX show called Doc based on an Italian series • The story behind getting the pitch for For Life and why he had to come back to it • His advice on to get started writing for a TV show • His writing process and to just get through the first draft • Working with his sister KJ Steinberg on Nine (she is now working on This is Us) • Advice for actors approaching pilot auditions and why there are no small roles • The gentle balance between a strong pilot to hook in executives and having some discipline in holding back to have an engaging season • The genesis of Without a Trace and how they came up with the idea (question from Mentor David Grae) and why the pilot is the worst episode of a show • How he got the idea for 61* which focused on Roger Marris and Mickey Mantle's home run which was directed by Billy Crystal and garnered 12 Emmy nominations • Spec script on The Duel (Burr vs Hamilton) and his particular appreciation for Hamilton the Musical Guest: IMDb Wikipedia Variety article on new show DOC Host: Instagram: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneMiller Twitter: @MentorsontheMic @MichelleSimoneM Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/mentorsonthemic Website: www.michellesimonemiller.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/24mmichelle If you like this episode, check out David Grae - From Spec Scripts to Executive Producer of Madam Secretary Click here to join our Mailing list. Ads: Check out Cave Day right now.
