And now for something completely different...in this special episode, we pay tribute to the late, great Ozzy Osbourne and each pick five of our favorite songs from the rock legend's career. So you may ask yourself, why are we doing an Ozzy episode on our classic alternative music podcast? We certainly don't want to be "those guys" who churn out opportunistic memorial episodes - but, quite simply, Uncle Gregg suggested "hey, we should do an Ozzy tribute" and Brett said "OK, let's do it." That's the way decisions are made here at O3L Headquarters...and six hours later, the episode is out to the world.  John "Ozzy" Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76, a little more than two weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning farewell concert, a massive show that featured a who's who of heavy metal musicians, culminating in a five song Ozzy solo set and a four song finale from Black Sabbath.  Ozzy, of course, rose to prominence as the lead singer of Birmingham rock band Black Sabbath from the time of their formation in 1969 until his dismissal in 1979. Considered one of (if not THE) most influential bands in the evolution of heavy metal, Sabbath also consisted of guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward, releasing a string of classic albums like Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970), Master of Reality (1971), Vol. 4 (1972), Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973), Sabotage (1975), Technical Ectasy (1976), Never Say Die (1978) before Ozzy launched a fruitful solo career. Solo records include 1980's Blizzard of Ozz, 1981's Diary of a Madman, 1983's Bark at the Moon, and 1991's No More Tears, intertwined with occasional Black Sabbath reunions, most notably their 2013 album 13. Osbourne remained at the forefront of pop culture through his popular Ozzfest tours and his unlikely stint as a lovable TV Dad on the reality show The Osbournes. Learn more about your ad choices. Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Wayne Hall, Ken Fuller and Jeffrey Crecelius This week Mark and I had all sorts of fun thinking about whether there are any short Yes epics - or if this idea is even possible. We set ourselves the restriction of only choosing Yes songs less than 6mins in duration so can you guess what we came up with and how we justified our choices? It was sad to hear that Ozzy Osbourne died this week, only a few weeks after performing his last ever concert with his Black Sabbath bandmates. I can't say I was a dedicated fan of Ozzy or Sabbath but my introduction to heavy metal was when a friend of mine took me up to his room in a slightly creepy Victorian mansion and played me the self-titled album by the Birmingham band. How appropriate the setting was. I also learned to play Paranoid on the drums when I was a teenager and my younger son taught my daughter, when she was a toddler, to sing the alphabet to the riff from War Pigs. My elder son was a true fan so he was upset when we heard the news.  As you know if you've read the new Tales book or get your information from many other sources like Matthew Paine on Facebook, Rick Wakeman was a huge fan of Ozzy who he met at Morgan Studios while Yes were recording Tales. He ended up playing keys on 2 songs on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath which was being recorded over the road in another Morgan studio at the time. Eventually, Ozzy returned the favour by singing on Rick's "The Return to the Center of the Earth", as pointed out by Paul Graf also on Facebook. Our own Doug Curran interviewed Ozzy for his radio show in 1981 so do make a point of reading his reflections on that on the YMP Facebook discussion group Rest in Peace Ozzy. https://www.quora.com/What-makes-epic-songs-epic https://youtu.be/YGsq3ya1-8Y?si=_4zjczWxt3grbwzH https://youtu.be/UF2P_qgi7YA?si=n9Vbim5fGeLPjfEN https://youtu.be/63nZud3Xu1Y?si=Y0PMEIxL5dxYXNHS https://youtu.be/CBtZ8exhRPQ?si=rt0xacK2W8SeZXl4 https://youtu.be/8-hJFoSgXfM?si=OTCdWuAB7U2zg-1- https://youtu.be/qEUkRRLe6vQ?si=SwOTImHn3DIXFIYe Yes - The Tormato Story & Tales from Topographic Oceans - Yes Album Listening Guide Available now! KISS. - Aerosmith debuterer, de transvestit klædte The New York Dolls lancerer deres præ-punk/glam og Iggy & The Stooges udviser frenetisk rå kraft.

In this special crossover episode, we're spotlighting Buffalo's 1973 Volcanic Rock—a raw, proto-metal gem that helped shape the sound of 80s Metal and 90s Rock. With primal riffs and fearless energy, Buffalo laid the groundwork for the heaviness embraced by bands like Metallica and Soundgarden. Picture it: the airwaves dominated by Dark Side of the Moon, Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy, and Sabbath's Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. Rock was entering its teenage years, shedding its innocence for something darker, more primal. Halfway around the world, Australia was a raw, untamed frontier where danger lurked in every shadow. Venomous creatures, desolate outback stretches, and a wild, unrelenting spirit shaped the people and their art. It was here, in this harsh and unpredictable landscape, that Buffalo unleashed their sophomore album, Volcanic Rock, on Vertigo Records. Like the searing sun, it scorched a path for heavy music, standing defiantly alongside its better-known contemporaries.Buffalo was no Zeppelin or Sabbath knockoff. This Brisbane-to-Sydney transplant created their own blend of bluesy grit and proto-metal menace. Formed initially as “Head,” their pivot to Buffalo was guided by a manager who believed that bands starting with “B” (Beatles, Beach Boys) were bound for success. A dart on a map landed on Buffalo, and thus began a name and sound etched in volcanic fury.Heavy as Hell, Raw as the OutbackVolcanic Rock lived up to its name—primitive, thunderous, and unpredictable. With Dave Tice's raw vocal delivery leading the charge, and guitarist John Baxter's primal riffage painting sonic landscapes, the album combined blues-rock roots with a proto-doom intensity that felt otherworldly. Songs like “Freedom” deliver nine-minute odysseys, meandering through psychedelic jam territory before crashing back into riff-laden crescendos.Yet, the record wasn't just music—it was spectacle. Its controversial cover art—a volcano shaped like a female torso spewing lava—reflected the wild creativity and raw edge of the band's ethos. It was shocking then and remains iconic now, an image as bold as the sound within.Misfits in a Golden AgeDespite their innovative sound, Buffalo never quite broke through. Opening for heavyweights like Black Sabbath and Rainbow, they faced the mischief of tour mates like Ritchie Blackmore, who infamously sabotaged their set. Still, they soldiered on, creating an album that influenced generations of grunge, stoner rock, and doom metal—long before the labels existed. But Buffalo's story is also one of commercial failure and creative frustration. Pushed by their label to pivot toward radio-friendly fare, they resisted, choosing instead to blaze their own trail. By the time their final album, Average Rock 'n' Roller, hit shelves in 1977, the band was running on fumes. Yet, Volcanic Rock remains their defining statement, a timeless blueprint for heavy rock adventurers. The Legacy: Why Volcanic Rock Still MattersSo why revisit Volcanic Rock in 2025? Because it's an artifact of pure, unadulterated rock energy—a raw, imperfect gem that prefigures everything from Kyuss to Queens of the Stone Age. Its primal simplicity, coupled with its audacious ambition, captures the essence of a time when rock was still dangerous.Want to know more?

Black Sabbath were at a standstill when it came time to make their 5th album. The ideas just weren't coming to guitarist Tony Iommi, and without his massive guitar riffs… well, there just wasn't any Black Sabbath. Weeks were wasted in the studio until he stumbled onto the riff that became “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath“, and then they were off to the races. That song became the opening cut from the album that would bear its name; and the song that would bring that album to a close is “Spiral Architect“, one of the most epic songs the band ever produced. “I want you to listen!  I'm talking to you…” One could easily argue that SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH, the fifth studio release from Birmingham's own BLACK SABBATH, is their “Black Album” moment, in that there are a multitude of different dimensions present on this album that were not as evident or pronounced as on the first four albums, including the addition of synthesizers, orchestras, and atmosphere. The 1970s saw the rise of rock and metal as a force in record and ticket sales. Right there at the birth of this was Black Sabbath, whose first album came from nowhere to smash into the top of the charts in Britain and around the world. “Black Sabbath in the 1970s” covers the career of the original foursome - Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne and Bill Ward – from Polka Tulk, through Earth and their original nine years as Black Sabbath, when the band recorded such iconic albums as ‘Paranoid', ‘Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' and ‘Masters of Reality'. This book includes new interview material from key figures including Rick Wakeman and engineers Mike Butcher and Robin Black, among others. It's is a comprehensive roundup of the band's music in the decade. All of the albums and singles from “The Rebel” until “Never Say Die” are examined in detail, along with related archive releases. Also included is a section covering Black Sabbath's tours in the era, looking at key live recordings from every tour. Overall, this is the most comprehensive account of the fortunes in the band during this crucial decade yet written.Chris also gives us his theory behind the story of the song “Black Sabbath” and who that “figure in black” really is, tells the story of the time Tony Iommi gave him a ride home and a whole lot more about Black Sabbath!Chris Sutton has been a fan of Black Sabbath since the early 70s. He manages and has written several publications for Smethwick Heritage Centre Museum. He's also written several plays. “Black Sabbath In the 1970s” is his second book on music for Sonicbond Publishing, following on from “Alice Cooper in the 1970s”. You can listen to our interview with Chris about that book in episode 13 of Booked on Rock (https://www.spreaker.com/user/discoveryeric/chris-sutton-alice-cooper-in-the-1970s) Chris also writes for Power Play magazine and has contributed to a documentary on Alice Cooper. He joins us from his home in Great Malvern, UK.BOOK DESCRIPTIONPurchase a copy of “Alice Cooper in the 1970s” through Amazon in the US: https://www.amazon.com/Black-Sabbath-70s-Chris-Sutton/dp/1789521718/refPurchase a copy of “Alice Cooper in the 1970s” through Burning Shed in the UK: https://burningshed.com/chris-sutton_black-sabbath-in-the-1970s_bookListen to a playlist of the music discussed in this episode: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3hAHR7jwSzppFefXtZeJtT?si=2a7280bdc6ea428fThe Booked On Rock Website: https://www.bookedonrock.comFollow The Booked On Rock with Eric Senich:FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/bookedonrockpodcastTWITTER: https://twitter.com/bookedonrockCheck out audio of my Dad Jim Senich!
