In this episode, we take an in-depth look at Portishead's groundbreaking debut album Dummy, ranked #67 on Apple Music's Top 100 Albums of All Time. Released in 1994, Dummy helped shape the trip-hop genre with its brooding atmosphere, hypnotic beats, and haunting vocals from Beth Gibbons. We'll explore how the band fused elements of jazz, hip-hop, and electronica to create a dark, cinematic soundscape that still resonates today. From the eerie tension of "Mysterons" and the spy-film vibes of "Sour Times" to the emotional depth of "Roads" and the iconic "Glory Box," we break down each track and discuss what made this album so influential. Tune in for a journey into one of the most important albums of the '90s and how it continues to shape modern music.

This month's deep dive Listen Closely album is:Portishead - Dummy (1994)The debut album from the Bristol trio of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons, and Adrian Utley was released during the summer of Blur's Parklife and Oasis's Definitely Maybe. Dummy was a darker, stranger record that would become a trip-hop classic that paired hip-hop, jazz, and electronic textures with Beth Gibbons spine-tingling voice and twangy tremolo guitars that belong in spy movies. The winner of the 1995 Mercury Music Prize, Dummy features the singles ‘Sour Times', ‘Glory Box', and ‘Numb', and is notable for it soulful turntable-sampling, melancholic film noir atmosphere. A modern classic indeed. We delve deep into how the band met, what trip-hop and the Bristol sound was, how the band got their name, how Dummy became hugely popular and a bit of a dinner-party LP ripe for sexy background music in film and more. The hosts of the Nialler9 Podcast (Niall Byrne and Andrea Cleary) present the Listen Closely series of listening parties on the Big Romance's warm Toby Hatchett soundsystem, featuring a focus modern classic album and a chat around it on the last Wednesday of the month. The Portishead - Dummy Listening Party happens Wednesday March 27th at The Big Romance. Thanks to Georgia Hallion for editing the podcast.* Support Nialler9 on Patreon, get event discounts, playlists, ad-free episodes and join our Discord communityListen on Apple | Android | ACAST | Patreon | Pocketcasts | CastBox | Stitcher | Spotify | RSS FeedShow notesSongs played on the Nialler9 Podcast Spotify PlaylistKEXP 25 year anniversary interview in 2019Dummy SamplesPitchfork's review by By Philip Sherburne Hosted on Acast. Adrian Utley is one of the most versatile and creative musicians the UK has produced. His work with artists such as Jeff Beck, Patti Smith and Glenn Branca is testament to this. Shooting to prominence in the mid 1990s with Portishead, Adrian's beautifully judged, nuanced playing - with its unique jazz and soul sensibilities - set the band apart from their contemporaries in what would become known as the trip-hop scene. Dummy, Portishead's debut album, would go multi-platinum. The band continues to have a lasting influence in terms of production values, musicianship and sheer style. Adrian accepted an invitation to join me for this episode of Life on the Fretboard after an online conversation about our shared love of the work of Fred Frith - a pioneer in the improvised and exploratory music scene. Shortly after, I was invited to film an original 1958 Gibson Flying V. Those of you familiar with my work will understand my trepidation to go it alone with a guitar that was so far out of my comfort zone, so I asked Adrian if he'd like to join me in exploring one of the rarest and pointiest electric guitars known to humanity. I was a little taken aback at the speed with which he accepted. I made a video of us exploring that Flying V: https://youtu.be/VM95mN7eDC0 Once we had finished with the pointy beast, we sat down to record this conversation. Adrian shares his memories of working with Jeff Beck and Glenn Branca and we talk about Adrian's love of all guitars, from vintage L-5s to dumpster-find acoustics. We also chat about learning to love limitations, the Fender Jazzmaster, the best footwear for wah-wah pedal usage, and that solo from the song "Glory Box." Here's a reminder if you need one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnMTK8EdsOc I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Be advised there is adult language throughout. Crédits : Générique : Dr Alban "Sing Hallelujah" Titres écoutés dans l'émission : “Mysterons”, “Sour Times”, “Strangers”, “It Could Be Sweet”, “Wandering Star”, “It's A Fire”, “Numb”, “Roads”, “Pedestal”, “Biscuit”, “Glory Box”. When you write a new book, one thing I want you to consider is how to set your book up for bulk orders. What are bulk orders? Typically these will come from groups, organizations, or companies that will want to order multiple copies of their books for book studies, gifts, to include in a subscription box, etc. Include a Reader’s Guide I recommend creating a reader’s guide with discussion questions that book clubs can use. Typically you will add the questions to the back of your book. This applies to both fiction and nonfiction. If you’ve written a Bible study or book study that can be used with church groups, this is another avenue where your books can be purchased in higher quantities. Personally, I have found that I sell a lot more copies of my print book, Broken Crayons Still Color, because women’s groups use it for their studies. Whether you are writing a fiction novel or a nonfiction book, consider how you can make it easy for groups to use it. You will have the potential to make more book sales and impact more people this way. You can let your readers know that you have additional resources for book clubs on your website. This could look like a standalone page on your website or you can have them sign up to an email list to get the information. Other Options Think outside the box! Are there companies who could use your book for leadership training for their employees or as a gift for Christmas? Or maybe a company wants to give the books as a gift for their buyers. For example, real estate agents often buy gifts for their new homeowners. Subscription box companies are also an option. For example, ourselves as well as several of our members have been able to work with God’s Glory Box. Offer Discounts Be willing to offer discounts to companies who buy your print books in bulk. We offer discounts from our website here: https://www.bodyandsoulpublishing.com/print-discounts/ 100+ Places to Market Your Christian Book Want some recommendations on where to publish your Christian book? Story: Glory Box Author: storybycorey Rating: MA Site link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/14797968 Read by: kristinsauter Summary: She doesn’t want to be just a partner, a sidekick. She wants more. She wants a reason to open that glory box, to allow herself the pleasure of those things, regardless of whether she chose fuchsia or pink, regardless of whether she had a damn wedding at all. In this episode I have the pleasure of talking with Jake Tetreault, CEO and founder of God's Glory Box. God's Glory Box was established in October 2015; however the website and actual product were not launched until their first box shipped on September 1, 2016. Jake Tetreault became aware of the subscription box business model in 2015 through a good friend Colin Hatzmann , owner at Bullymake, and he became quite intrigued. That's when his good friend Colin told him he should follow his passions. That's when Jake decided he wanted to do something that involved one of his passions. Growing up a Catholic Christian, he instantly knew a Christian Subscription Box was a perfect fit, and aligned perfectly with his vision.God's Glory Box humbly began with 27 straight days of Zero customers, only to have 3 paying customers come through at the last second, after a month of minimal Facebook ads. They sent out the remaining 17 boxes that they had prepared for Instagram influencers in an attempt to get traction!Fast forward just four short years to 2020, and now God's Glory Box is a leader in the Christian Subscription Box space.

Have you heard of “Bleisure”? This is the increasing trend of mixing business with leisure activities on business trips. This is one of the topics I touch on speaking with Jen Ruiz of Jen on a Jet Plane - a lawyer turned successful travel entrepreneur, Tedx Speaker and author. For many Millennials and Generation X’ers travel is becoming as important as a career. There’s been a paradigm shift over the last few years and Jen tells us how she ensures travel is a part of her life and how, with a little planning, we all can afford to get to those dream destinations. We’re talking about her path from Corporate Law to Travel Entrepreneur and the moment, on a solo trip, when confidence replaced fear to kick-start her on a new path. Jen talks openly about overcoming Imposter Syndrome, stepping away from her law career to a new path that didn’t have the same social respect and how she deals with that. Swapping our travel experiences Jen shares 5 travel tips from her book: The Affordable Flight Guide. In this episode learn: How to find flights at great prices without scouring the internet for hours; My life-hack to see and do more if your job includes overseas travel; What it feels like to let go of the crutch of stature to find real joy; and Your own work –life balance. Cookie Baker is an incredible singer-songwriter and I am bloody thrilled to have Cookie as my special guest this week. Welcome to Episode 25, we are still alive! Happy quarter century to us. Cookie Baker has shared stages with many esteemed Australian artists, including Augie March, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ben Lee, Angie Hart (Frente!, a previous guest on this show, check out her episode here), Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Little Birdy, and The Audreys. Her album will be released in 2019 following the release of three singles, Little Engine (which has an amazing video!), The Summer (with Tim Rogers) and Don't Start A Fight. Cookie begins by telling me about her upbringing in rural South Australia, performing concerts to her family on the front veranda through her Young Talent Team microphone. Fast forward to 2019 and now Cookie helps to run an artist's residency with her family on a neighbouring property called the Ballara Art & Lifestyle Retreat - Artist Residency Program. Once a year for the past 5 years Cookie travels to California to mentor with the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp, which reminded me of Melbourne's own Rock and Roll High School which began in 1995 right here on Easey Street, Collingwood! The very same street where More Than A Whelan is recorded every week at Castaway Studios! Rock and High School was visited by many alt rock luminaries including L7, Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland, Sonic Youth and The Breeders. You can read about its amazing history and achievements here. I also ask Cookie about If You See Her, Say Hello, a Melbourne based all women choir collective founded in 2015 by Cookie. I've been lucky enough to see several performances by this collective, all of them stunning. Including this 2016 show as part of the Brunswick Music Festival, where you can see Cookie fronting the choir herself. At the same show Gretta Ray performed her original song Blank White Canvas with the choir. Gretta has gone on to huge things since then, recently performing on stage at Rod Laver. Cookie Baker's upcoming full length album has been slow cooking over the last ten years. A digital only release is slated for mid year with a limited edition vinyl lp coming out in late 2019. To keep up with all things Cookie Baker keep an eye on her website and follow her on Instagram. I ask Cookie about her thoughts on the #metoo movement's impact on the Australian music industry, in light of recent news of Ryan Adams bad behaviour. *CLARIFICATION: I say that up until now the #metoo movement 'hadn't involved musicians much'. What I actually meant to say was 'high profile, internationally known musicians.' It has in fact already involved many local and international musicians. And rightly so. WHELAN & STEALIN' I read a poem mysteriously sent to my address with a beautiful leaf in the envelope, by sender unknown! But I believe was written according to the prompt The Journey of a Leaf by Ag. If you would like to see a picture of this poem and a very beautiful leaf head to the More Than A Whelan Facebook or Instagram pages. And please like or follow us or rate and review us while you do! I also read work from an upcoming guest on More Than A Whelan, Ruth McIver. I read an excerpt from her book The Sunset Club. Really looking forward to having Ruth on the show! Cookie Baker weighs in also for Whelan and Stealin' with a stunning cover of Glory Box by Portishead. This week I respond to the prompt 'Detroit' by Shane Jesse Christmass by writing a poem about... Detroit. Thanks Shane! You are our official More Than A Whelan Muse of the Week! You'll be getting some sweet MTAW merch coming your way care of our good friends at Luxe Country. And that's a wrap for Episode 25! Please visit our Luxe Country store for exclusive More Than A Whelan merchandise. Thanks to their generosity proceeds from their sales go back into keeping us alive. Please also consider liking, following and rating us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Whelan, out.
ep nr 122- From Portishead to LSD....Il gusto e il sound raffinato trip hop anni 90 influenza ancora i produttori!

Cecily and A.Ron pronounce the latest episode of FX's American Horror Story: Apocalypse, "Could it be... Satan?" to be, in fact, a Glory Box. Full of wonders, such as gay Harry Potter fan fiction, Emma Roberts in hell, the return of hotelier James March, and a ruthless system of matriarchal oppression where men can never be Supreme! But never fear, gentlemen, because Michael Langdon is here in Satan's service to finally free us men from female hegemony. Nema! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
