"I wasn't Vietnamese enough for the locals and not white enough for the expats. It took time to find my place in Saigon."It was an absolute joy to record this episode. Rochelle's journey is the epitome of courage, adaptability, and humor. Her ability to share deeply personal stories—like her parents meeting on a refugee boat—alongside lighthearted anecdotes about perfecting cocktails and navigating Saigon's chaos, is remarkable. She's one of those rare guests who can make you laugh, think, and feel inspired all at once. This conversation wasn't just about her life; it was about resilience, community, and finding a place in a world that often feels divided. I'm truly grateful she finally said yes to joining me on the podcast, and I think her story will resonate with anyone chasing their dreams or building something meaningful in unexpected places.- Niall MackayKey Takeaways* Vietnam's Duality - Saigon's chaotic vibrancy offers a mix of traditional street life and Western comforts, making it a unique city for locals and expats alike.* Rochelle's Bold Career Move - Opening 86 Proof was inspired by her entrepreneurial spirit and the guidance of her mentor.* The Whiskey Sour Experiment - It took 34 iterations of whiskey sours to perfect the recipe that became a local favorite.* Navigating Dual Identity - Rochelle discusses the challenges of being too "Vietnamese" for expats and too "Western" for locals, a struggle familiar to many third-culture kids.* A Refugee Romance - Rochelle's parents met on the same boat while fleeing Vietnam, a story straight out of a movie.Chapters & Timestamps08:00 - Rochelle's Background: Refugee Parents and Canadian Childhood 24:00 - Journey to Vietnam and Opening 86 Proof 40:00 - The Art of the Whiskey Sour 34:00 - Challenges of Living Between Cultures42:00 - Saigon's Vibrancy and Community Spirit"Send me a message!"Become a Bắp Xào Đâyer in our community on Patreon and become part of something special. You can choose a Cà phê sữa đá, Bánh mì, Cơm tấm, Bún Thịt Nướng or the ultimate level, a Bắp Xào Đây. Cody Hildreth from The Block, Petaluma and Lorraine Barber both join Herlinds Heras and Steve Jaxon on Brew Ha Ha today. also organizes cool events in Petaluma. Lorraine was on this show recently talking about Barber Lee Spirits and Barber Cellars. She is also organizing a Petaluma Craft Cocktail Week and The Block is one of the featured bars. Cody has brought two cocktails that The Block will be featuring during Petaluma Craft Cocktail Week. The first is a barrel-aged blood orange Negroni. A Negroni is usually made with gin, Campari and red vermouth, but The Block's version is unique. The Block has been open for about seven years. They have live music, pizza, tacos and food trucks outside. Mombo's Pizza is making pizzas there, too. It is an indoor/outdoor space, with dog-friendly space on the outdoor side. There are picnic tables and booths, so it's good for everything from a family night out to a date. The Block is located right next to the ten-story grain mill that dominates the horizon in downtown Petaluma. Lorraine is present in Petaluma as a partner in Barber Lee Spirits and Barber Cellars and she also organizes community fairs that focus on local producers and provide a marketplace to connect local producers with customers. @Petaluma_Cocktail_Society This first week, Petaluma Craft Cocktail Week is focussing on a Whiskey Sour. All the participating locations will make one. You can get a card at any destination and you can take your card to the other bars to try the whiskey sour there and get the card stamped. Find it with the hashtag " @Petaluma_Cocktail_Society " Lorraine explains how Whiskey Sour is a recipe that lends itself to "riffing on it." They also use Bitter Girl Bitters exclusively. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. The Block also has Trivia Night and Bingo Night. "It gets rowdy on Wednesday nights." They have a roster of bands that come through playing lots of music, from rock to country to what not, anything from two-person band to a big band with horns. Holiday Food Fair, Tues. Nov. 26 Also, don't miss the 8th annual Holiday Food Fair on Tuesday, November 26, at the Petaluma Hotel. This got started in 2017 when businesses needed extra support, as a way to connect local producers to customers. They will have a Santa and snow, and admission is only $5. Then, on Dec. 3rd, is the annual Petaluma Holiday Makers Fair. This is another opportunity to connect local craft makers to customers.
Well, that happened. Our scientists review the completely disappointing but entirely predictable slightly below mediocre season of baseball that was played by the 2024 San Francisco Giants. Kaya Scodelario has grown up in the spotlight. The British-Brazilian actress shot to fame as Effy on E4's comedy-drama Skins. The show has remained popular with audiences since the early noughties, tackling issues such as teen addiction and mental illness. That success propelled Kaya to the big screen, where she won roles in two massive movie franchises, Maze Runner and Pirates of the Caribbean. Kaya's latest role is in Guy Ritchie's hit series The Gentlemen on Netflix, playing Susie Glass alongside an all-star cast of Theo James, Vinnie Jones and Ray Winstone. Nick welcomes Kaya with a Whiskey Sour inspired by her latest role, while Angela makes her carb-loving dreams come true with a pesto & three-cheese hedgehog garlic bread to start and fresh tagliatelle with buttery cavolo nero, anchovies and pangrattato for the main course. Kaya speaks frankly about the film industry and how she chooses roles. She and Nick reminisce about the Skins' days and she shares how her Brazilian roots have shaped her cooking and, more importantly, her eating!
