Making a podcast in the world today takes everything we've got. Telling your friends to listen now sure would help a lot. Wouldn't you like to laugh today.....If so, check out the best podcast about Sam Cooke and the 240th greatest album of all time, Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963. Before we get to the music, we walk the line of sacred and profane for an extended discussion of prolapsed duck corkscrews, the TV show Webster, and rollercoaster riding.. We also offer some wedding speech advice, critique adults running youth sports tournaments, and share our favorite burger toppings. Then, at (51:00) we're having a party and covering Sam Cooke's second live album. We celebrate Sam's raw voice, King Curtis on the sax, and the best songs about diseases. Next week, we'll keep you safe from harm when we become the best Massive Attack podcast and cover the 1991 trip hop album, Blue Lines.
The Accelerated Culture team takes a deep dive into the album that launched an entire genre: Massive Attack's debut album, “Blue Lines.” Combining hip-hop, r&b, reggae, pop, and more, this trip-hop classic takes the listener on a dark, moody, and soulful journey: grooves designed as much for your head as for the dance floor. Laurie and Scott explore Massive Attack's origins in the Bristol sound system scene, the culturally diverse influences that shaped their approach to music, and the production techniques that make this album a field day for fans of the “spot the sample” game. Put your headphones on and get ready to dive deep. ********************* SUBSCRIBE ON PATREON FOR ADS-FREE LISTENING AND SPECIAL BONUS CONTENT! On this week's show, we're thankful for new records from Pixies, Fantastic Negrito and Kim Deal, archival music from the legendary Lone Justice and a reissue of Tom Petty & The Herartbreakers' most underrated record. All this & much, much less! Debts No Honest Man Can Pay started in 2003 at WHFR-FM (Dearborn, MI), moved to WGWG-FM (Boiling Springs, NC) in 2006 & Plaza Midwood Community Radio (Charlotte, NC) in 2012, with a brief pit-stop at WLFM-FM (Appleton, WI) in 2004.
I discuss Massive Attack's debut, the very first trip hop album, 1991's Blue Lines.

Join us on this episode of [Your Podcast Name] as we dive into the atmospheric world of Massive Attack's groundbreaking album, Blue Lines. Ranked 87th on Apple Music's Top 100 Albums of All Time, Blue Lines is a cornerstone of the trip-hop genre. We dissect each track, exploring the unique fusion of hip hop, electronica, jazz, soul, funk, reggae, and dub that defines trip-hop. In this episode, we cover: "Safe from Harm": A brooding opener with a cinematic feel, perfect for a '90s thriller. "One Love": A track blending reggae influences with electronic beats, though it falls short of being memorable. "Blue Lines": The title track that attempts to fuse rap and trip-hop but ends up feeling monotonous. "Be Thankful for What You've Got": A smooth '70s soul vibe that's somewhat cheesy by modern standards. "Five Man Army": A funky joint that unfortunately overstays its welcome. "Unfinished Sympathy": The standout track with orchestral strings and soulful vocals. "Daydreaming": A mellow beat with male rap verses that miss the mark. "Lately": Traditional trip-hop sound with melancholic tones. "Hymn of the Big Wheel": An ambient, introspective closer blending trip-hop and world music. Whether you're a long-time fan of Massive Attack or new to the trip-hop scene, this episode is packed with insights and analysis. Tune in as we explore the highs and lows of this influential album, and share our thoughts on why it holds a significant place in music history. Don't forget to subscribe for more deep dives into the greatest albums of all time!

Join Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton as they explore the profound impact law enforcement has on family dynamics and community relationships. Discover the various ways in which officers contribute positively to families, enhancing safety and facilitating healing during and after critical incidents. Learn about the benefits of these interactions and how they extend beyond immediate crisis response to foster long-term community well-being. What You'll Learn: Promoting Safety Education: Officers often provide families with crucial safety education, teaching parents and children how to prevent and respond to emergencies. This proactive approach not only helps prevent accidents and incidents but also fosters a sense of security and preparedness within the family. Crisis Intervention (Affiliate Link): During times of crisis, officers play a key role in stabilizing situations, thereby protecting physical safety and emotional well-being. Their intervention can prevent trauma from escalating, providing a critical buffer that helps families begin the healing process more swiftly. Community Policing Initiatives: Through community policing, officers build trust and foster relationships within neighborhoods. These initiatives often lead to stronger community bonds and a heightened sense of collective responsibility, which can reduce crime and enhance quality of life for families. Supporting Victim Assistance Programs: Law enforcement agencies often connect families to victim assistance programs, which provide essential resources such as counseling, financial aid, and legal assistance. This support is crucial for recovery and can significantly ease the emotional and financial burdens faced by families after a crime. Facilitating Restorative Justice: When appropriate, officers help facilitate restorative justice meetings, which can be profoundly healing for victims, offenders, and the community. These meetings allow for a constructive dialogue, fostering understanding, accountability, and often, a sense of closure that can help families move forward. Join Us: Tune in to "The Thin Blue Line's Family Ties" to understand the critical role law enforcement plays in shaping and supporting family dynamics. Whether you are part of a law enforcement family, involved in community safety, or interested in the social impacts of policing, this episode offers deep insights into the positive transformations that can arise from thoughtful police interaction with communities.
Last week, Mayor Lori Lightfoot joined Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown, and CTA President Dorval Carter to announce a $71 million plan to increase security on trains and buses. That's the city's response to increased reports of violence, unsanitary conditions, and smoking on the CTA. Reporter John Greenfield from Streetsblog Chicago rode the Red and Blue lines last weekend for 12 hours straight to document whether the CTA really did feel dirtier and less safe. A few weeks ago the weather was perfect as summer turned to fall. Rob decided to grab his brook trout fly fishing equipment, some camping gear, a few supplies, and head due west on I66. The destination was Herbert Hoover's Camp Rapidan. These historic waters are where Rob learned to fly fishing for brook trout in the 80's. This is the first time Rob has fished this stream in twenty years. Join Rob as he camps and fishes in the mountains of Virginia. Visit WaypointTV for a podcast episode all about brook trout. Rob is way off with his math of the past so disregard the history dates. As broadcast July 7, 2021 with a lot of extra room to roam for you podcast wanderers. Tonight we took a trip to Lebanon, which is really having a terrible time right now amidst one of the worst economic crises of the past two centuries and an ongoing refugee crisis that is literally squeezing the tiny beauty to the breaking point. Thus, we wanted to take a trip and pay tribute to the country of the mighty cedar, and play some tunes new & old from this very gifted but beleaguered nation. Classics from Fairuz & Roger Fakhr dotted with some more modern joints from Mashrau Leila and Soapkills throughout whilst starting with our own tribute to Massive Attack's "Blue Lines," celebrating 30 years since release this year.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Massive Attack – Unfinished SympathyFeu! Sol and Richard discuss the first half of Massive Attack's visionary and unparalleled debut album, Blue Lines. This year marks the album's 30th anniversary, the exact anniversary was a few weeks ago. The reason we took so long to get round to this episode is because we are - as Daddy G says of the band - lazy Bristol twats.Get yourself a copy of Melissa Chemam's Massive Attack: Out Of The Comfort Zone for the the full story: https://www.tangentbooks.co.uk/shop/massive-attack-out-of-the-comfort-zone

Part 2 of our "TNT tip o' the hat" to Massive Attack's album, Blue Lines. This the 2nd hour, sans hot chat, for your listening pleasure.
Sitting in the sun today, listentening to a Horace Andy gig Manchester's Band on the Wall were streaming, we got to thinking about his relationship with Massive Attack. A quick look online and we saw that Blue Lines was released 19 years ago today! Many moons ago, we made a tribute show that we thought was pretty good. Turns out, if you take away our chat, it was one of our best. So today we're uploading it for your listening pleasure. It's a good 'un, even if we do say so ourselves. We're doing it in two parts as it's in glorious 320kbps so will sound good in headphones and speakers.
The Major Scale gives a wink and a nod to Tom Scott and some of his early work. Before Scott was topping the charts with music for Tom Cat, L.A. Express with Joni Mitchell, along with scoring for film and TV- Starsky And Hutch, Let's Do It Again, and Family Ties, he was a teenage prodigy who was signed to Impulse Records – the home of his hero John Coltrane among other legends. Although these first albums weren't as popular as his later releases, over the past couple of decades they've become fertile ground for sampling - Massive Attack, Pete Rock and CL Smooth, Hieroglyphics and countless others have rearranged his work to great heights. We talk with the man himself about this phenomenon – easily one of our most entertaining conversations yet! SONG CREDITS FOR THIS EPISODE: THEME: Jazz Phantom by Chomsk' (from the album "Different Beats" on Magnetic Records). FIRST HALF: Rural Still life #26 by Tom Scott (from the album "Rural Still Life" on Impulse Records). Milestones by Oliver Nelson (from the album "Live In Los Angeles" on Impulse Records). They Reminisce Over You by Peter Rock and CL Smooth (from the album "Mecca and the Soul Brother" on Elektra Records). Today by Tom Scott (from the record "Honeysuckle Breeze" on Impulse Records). With Respect to John Coltrane by Tom Scott (from the record "Rural Still Life" on Impulse Records). Looking Out for Number Seven, Woodstock and Trouble Me by Tom Scott (from the album "Great Scott" on A&M Records). Trouble Me by Joni Mitchell (from the album "Old Grey Whistle Test" on BBC/Asylum Records). Blue Lines (excerpt) by Massive Attack (from the album "Blue Lines" on Virgin Records). Sneakin' in the Back by Tom Scott (from the album "Tom Scott and LA Express" on Ode Records). ABOUT THE MAJOR SCALE: Your attention please to a new program that celebrates and takes a fresh and bold look at the great American art form- JAZZ!!! A lot of focus will be on new and fresh sounds, deep cuts, closer looks at underrated artists, taking a different look at some of the titans of the genre, and getting the two cents worth from a number of surprise guests and sources. The Major Scale can boast amongst it's guests- legends like Herbie Hancock, Tom Scott, and Ahmad Jamal. The up and coming and the underrated-Kamasi Washington, Mia Doi Todd, Michael Blake. Think about programming and content found on the likes of World Cafe, Philadelphia, PA. Tiny Desk from Washington D.C., and KEXP Live from Seattle, WA. and that's what the Major Scale strives to do. For the curious, and lovers of music who like the details in between.
