A Conversation with Boris Johnson at The Saudi Media Forum. Thank you to the Ministry of Media in Saudi Arabia for arranging this. Boris Johnson is a British politician, journalist, and author who served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2019 to 2022. A member of the Conservative Party, he was previously the Mayor of London (2008–2016) and a Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (2015–2023). Known for his charismatic and sometimes controversial style, Johnson played a key role in the Brexit campaign and led the UK through its formal departure from the EU. His tenure as Prime Minister was marked by major events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, economic challenges, and the Partygate scandal, which contributed to his eventual resignation in 2022. 0:00 Intro1:09 Saudi Arabia's Rapid Development6:10 From Journalism to Politics10:00 Challenges in Modern Political Communication12:00 “Unleashed” and the Brexit Vision19:00 Vision 203021:00 Regional Geopolitics and Peace Efforts24:00 Media Relationship 26:44 Final Thoughts and Messages

In July, three By-Elections took place and all the results were interesting. Each of the major parties won one constituency each. The big attention was, of course, Uxbridge and South Ruislip, where the Conservatives just managed to hold onto the constituency by a mere 495 votes. Even though the party tried to play this off as a victory, it's very much a hollow one. The others however were a bit more straight forward. Labour took a seat from the Conservatives in Yorkshire and the Lib Dems did the same in the South West, with Ed Davey and his props making a comeback to celebrate the victory. What does this all mean for a general election? Join Julian and Chris this week for our political analysis. There is fresh turmoil among London's Conservatives as the party launches a probe into its electoral operations in the capital.Voters will likely go to the polls both nationally and in London in 2024. Now the internal review, news of which was broken by LBC, comes just weeks after Susan Hall's selection as the Conservatives' London mayoral candidate. The investigation will focus on the “structures, processes, and organisation of the Conservative Party in London”, but senior Tories also want party chairman Greg Hands to ensure the inquiry covers the selection process to choose their London mayoral candidate. However, Richard Barnes, the former Conservative deputy mayor of London, told LBC that the probe risked “totally undermining her position”.It comes after the Conservatives' surprise by-election win, by 495 votes, last month in Boris Johnson's former constituency of Uxbridge and South Ruislip. For the latest, The Leader podcast is joined by Evening Standard political editor Nicholas Cecil. Rishi Sunak is “on the side” of drivers – What happened to Britain's “golden age for cycling”? Plus THAT cargo bike parking row!

It's time for episode 56 of the road.cc Podcast. Last weekend, just in case you were doing your best to avoid the news, Rishi Sunak promised the UK's motorists that he was “on their side”, as the Prime Minister ordered a review of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in England. The review comes as the debate over green active travel policies continues to sharpen in the wake of the Conservative Party's win at the recent Uxbridge and South Ruislip by-election (called following the departure of the famously active travel-friendly PM Boris Johnson), a narrow victory credited to the Tory opposition to Labour mayor Sadiq Khan's plans to extend London's Ultra-Low Emission Zone. Sunak's opposition to ULEZ and LTNs, the latest strategic manoeuvre in the pre-general election battleground, isn't the only move away from the green active travel policies held by his party in recent years, with the Prime Minister also recently hinting at plans to push back the date that sales of new petrol and diesel-powered cars will be banned, while funding for cycling infrastructure – including the new government body Active Travel England – has also taken a hit during his tenure in charge. In the second part of the latest episode of the road.cc Podcast, Jack, Simon, and Ryan sit round the table to discuss what Sunak's latest pro-driver pledges mean for the next general election, how they represent a shift away from past Conservative policy on cycling, active travel, and climate change (led by Johnson), and what impact they could have on the future landscape of cycling in the UK. Before we get to all that political chicanery, Ryan chats with Bristol couple Anna and Mark Cordle, who recently made the headlines after they set up a parking space for their family cargo bike outside their home – which, a year after it was installed, has been the subject of threats by the local council to remove it… because it was taking up a car parking space. In a really interesting discussion which touches on the differing perceptions and treatment of people who ride bikes to get around compared to those who use cars, Anna and Mark detail the reasons why they needed the space for their young family, how it was greeted by their neighbours, their current struggle against the council, and why planter-based bike parking spaces may provide an organic way forward for active travel in the UK's cities.

Last week's by-elections left the Tory party wounded, with Labour and the Lib Dems on the front foot. Or are they? The Tories JUST held onto Uxbridge and South Ruislip, and those on the right say that's down to Labour's ULEZ policy. Starmer, for some reason, ran with that Narrative. Is he losing his nerve over his party's green policies? And when will the Tories stop shitting on young voters? That's Oh God, What Now? With this week's guest, Rachel Cunliffe. “If I were Sunak I'd be tearing my hair out, but the narrative is - it wasn't that bad really.” – Rachel Cunliffe  “The Lib Dems are like ‘WE ARE KINGS OF THE WORLD'.” – Marie Le Conte “I think Labour are currently making a category error on what the Tories' strategy is.” – Alex Andreou. “You don't earn any votes by shitting on young people.” – Marie Le Conte. The recent English byelection results have thrown the possibility of a Labour government after the next general election into sharp relief. We examine those results and the messages both Labour and the Tories seem to be taking from,in particular,Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Will they both jettison their Net Zero commitments for short term political expediency? The Labour National Policy Forum, despite pressure from Unite and Momentum, endorsed Starmer's economic and social policies, rejecting, without a vote, amendments to abolish the two child benefit cap, institute a £15 per hour minimum wage, expand free school meals, and repeal anti-protest laws. Where, yet again, does this leave Scottish Labour? We also ask if Scottish Labour will stand up for the Scottish Parliament against attacks on its powers emanating from Labour Lord George Foulkes with support from the Conservative government?Chris Hanlon has,or has he,launched a bid to oust Humza Yousaf as leader of the SNP. What's behind the headlines and was his approach wise? The snap Spanish general election has resulted not in the predicted victory for the Right/Far Right but a hung parliament where "regional" parties could flex their muscle to secure significant concessions in return for supporting the return of a Socialist government. The dust has settled after yesterday's by-election results. It came on Saturday - effectively immediately - Boris Johnson resigned from his parliamentary seat of Uxbridge and South Ruislip - a Greater London constituency inside of the M25 Motorway for those who need to know - It was on the front page of the Financial Times Weekend Supplement but - below the fold. Michael Heseltine, the former deputy Prime Minister under Margaret Thatcher - keep your friends close but your enemies even closer - described the move as “a brilliant coup de théâtre - and - it is … totally unprincipled and dishonest.”
