This week we transit the Spring Equinox, the official beginning of spring and a good time to check in on the ambient space guitar. Acoustic or electric, live or sampled, looped or direct, straight up or processed, folk, jazz, or classical — even in the electronic age, the venerable six string guitar continues to make itself indispensable almost everywhere music happens. Guitarists of the Ambient persuasion take it slow, quiet, and spatially expanded, leaving the virtuosic fireworks to their rock brothers and sisters. Occasionally...a heroic rock guitarist like JEFF BECK or BUCKETHEAD will journey to the contemplative side of the instrument just to do something completely different. On this transmission of Hearts of Space, a spacey, twangy, laid-back, subtle, turn-of-the-season journey for ambient guitar — on a program called SIX STRING SPRING. Music is by CHRIS HAUGEN, LISA BELLA DONNA, CLAES NILSSON, CARL WEINGARTEN, BLUE STAR, and TONY GERBER, with PHIL KEAGGY and DREAMHUB. We are thrilled to speak with Soya and Steve Freeman, aka Extrakd, who has created loads of diverse music over the years with the likes of Brain, Disk, Mirv, Ler, and Buckethead. We tread some of the history and releases from the 90s and 00s, but hone in on Mars Mechanics, which has a new album titled In Through The Drive Through. The record is primarily arranged and performed by Steve, Brain, and Mirv with guest turns from Skerik and Ler. Each Mars Mechanics release has its own musical theme; the latest has a 1970s Miles Davis foundation, and the outcome is a high-energy dose of unmistakable majesty. The collection features collaborations with Bootsy Collins, Fred Wesley, Norwood Fisher, Buckethead, Leo Nocentelli, Stanton Moore, Will Calhoun, Fred Schneider, Sean Lennon and Jerry Harrison, among others.  Taylor also runs Loantaka Records out of Glendale, N.Y., as well as the Loantaka Sound studio in downtown L.A. RECORDED SEPTEMBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. This week's guest, producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Evan Taylor (Bernie Worrell Orchestra, Loantaka Records), brings us The Beach Boys' 21st studio album - and the last one under the group's name to be written and produced solely by troubled leader Brian Wilson - 'The Beach Boys Love You'. Released in 1977, this strange, at-times childlike collection of songs sounded like nothing else the band had done up until then. With raspier-than-usual vocals from the Wilson brothers and Brian's newfound infatuation with the Moog synthesizer, it left many fans/critics confused at the time but has since been recognized for presaging both synth-pop and new wave.  Songs discussed in this episode: Good Vibrations - Brian Wilson (Live on SNL, 1976); Distant Star - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Jerry Harrison); Take 5 - Bernie Worrell; What Have They Done To My Funk - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Bootsy Collins, Michael Moon Reuben, Ouiwey Collins, Buckethead); Be My Baby - The Ronettes; Let Us Go On This Way, Hey, Little Tomboy, Roller Skating Child, Mona, Johnny Carson, Good Time - The Beach Boys; Good Time, Shyin' Away - American Spring; Honkin' Down The Highway, Ding Dang, Solar System - The Beach Boys; Solar System - Alex Chilton; The Night Was So Young, I'll Bet He's Nice - The Beach Boys; Shoot The Curl - The Honeys; Let's Put Our Hearts Together, I Wanna Pick You Up, Airplane, Love Is A Woman - The Beach Boys; Wave From The WOOniverse - Bernie Worrell (Featuring Miho Hatori)

As season 4 draws to a close, I'm joined by someone all of you should know: Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings, The Road)! One thing you might not know about Viggo - it was certainly news to me - is that he's also a musician, making a number of albums with famed guitarist Buckethead and even scoring a couple films, including his latest directorial effort The Dead Don't Hurt. As such, we discuss his musical history, his score for The Dead Don't Hurt, his first foray into making music for film in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, balancing various behind-the-scenes roles in the same film, and plenty more. Even though this is a pretty short interview, we cover a surprising amount of ground. Candidly, this was the most surreal, hard to believe interview I've ever done. When I saw Viggo pop up on video to chat with me, I was certain I was being pranked, or maybe just dreaming; I'm sure I'll wake up at any second... Viggo's score is available on all major platforms, while The Dead Don't Hurt has just finished its theatrical run and will likely be coming to home video soon. I also want to flag that I accidentally attribute a (poorly) paraphrased quote to Ernest Hemingway that's actually from Mark Twain.

We're back on track! Thanks for sticking with us. Govier is blown away that OJ Simpson is frequently featured on Come And Talk 2 Me which is a sports show hosted by Cam'ron & Ma$e in suits. Bizarro. Dan Campbell is blowing the minds of the locals here in metro Detroit. Have you heard the rumors about black male actors being coerced into dressing in drag? It's not just a one-off. The Katt Williams interview with Shannon Sharpe offers up this juicy tale plus the derision of Joe Rogan's army of unfunny comedians. Who's funnier: Joe Rogan or Bill Maher? Luke watched Killers of the Flower Moon, but Steve hasn't yet so we offer nothing to you about that film. David Caruso become iconically funny while attempting to do drama on CBS. Is Jim Carrey impersonating Caruso less, the same or more funny? We got your emails! Mr. Pink chimes in about our unintended hiatus. Sid wants to know if Luke thinks voting for Biden in Wisconsin purely for the Supreme Court cause is reason enough. Govier asks Steve for a throwback about the frequent anthrax attacks from 2002 related to diaper shits. We do the BBC proud! Joe checks in with an email about his clarification about Aesop Rock. Joe enlightens us about producer Blockhead. Govier wants to know if he has collaborated with Buckethead yet. Luke listened to over Aesop Rock songs to report to you all on the matter. Finn Gurrer has a crisis related to Sbarro credit cards, the Social Security Administration and TGI Friday's gift card. It's a doozy! Mr. Pink writes in briefly to thank the fellas for the show existing. Thank you Mr. Pink! Can Yao Ming be the lead villain in a new Rocky movie? We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with Wilma's Rainbow by Helmet. This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It's not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It's just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Be sure to also check out the Jason Becker documentary “Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet” that we mention.Songs this week include:Anvil Chorus – “Blue Flames” from The Killing Sun (2009)Kirk Hammett – “The Jinn” from Portals - EP (2022)Bruce Kulick – “Ain't Gonna Die” from BK3 (2010)Buckethead – “Welcome To Bucketheadland” from Giant Robot (1994)Tears For Fears – “Broken” from Songs From The Big Chair (1985)Psycho Motel – “Welcome To The World” from Welcome To The World (1997)Cacophony – “Go Off!” from Go Off! (1988) Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Singer/Songwriter Releases New Album Featuring Living Colour's Vernon Reid#newmusic #newalbum #singersongwriter #avantgardemusic #soulmusic Percy Howard, a NorCal based singer-songwriter and product of the New York no-wave avant-garde, has performed and or toured with members of Living Colour, King Crimson, Swans, Guns N' Roses (Buckethead), Oxbow, Henry Cow, This Heat, and Brand X. Percy has also shared European festival stages with Brazilian music legend Caetano Veloso and ambient pioneer Stephan Micus.Percy is the generator of the Meridiem project, which has included collaborative input from Bill Laswell, Vernon Reid, Charles Hayward, Trey Gunn, Fred Frith, Robert Rich, Buckethead, Jarboe, Happy Rhodes, and Jill Tracy, amongst others. Percy's Genre-defying mix of rock, jazz, soul and classical influences have drawn critical attention and praise from all over the planet. Percy has recently started the record label Necessary Angel, which he sees as an archival entity whose sole mission is to spread as much sonic beauty across the world as possible.Influenced by the Laurel Canyon Sound, Bowie, Steely Dan, Richie Havens, and Scott Walker, but created in the context of my own experience, Percy's new album “The Stars and The Well” is unabashedly nostalgic, consumed with Romance and unafraid of the fragility of love.
