It's our annual mailbag episode! We get a lot of wonderful reader emails suggesting topics for the show — and at the end of the year we try to answer some of them. This year, we're tackling four fascinating questions. Why do grocery stores keep live lobsters in tanks, unlike any other animal? How did candy get rebranded as “fruit snacks” when fruit is already a snack? Whatever happened to perfumed ads in magazines? And what was the waterbed all about? We'll get an answer from the waterbed's inventor who still has four of them. You'll hear from Ray Shalhoub of Joray Fruit Rolls, consumer lawyer Steve Gardner, Jessica Murphy, aka the “Perfume Professor,” inventor Charlie Hall, restaurant historian Jan Whitaker, and the CEO of Crustacean Compassion, Dr. Ben Sturgeon. This episode was produced by Max Freedman and Sofie Kodner. Decoder Ring is also produced by Willa Paskin, Evan Chung, and Katie Shepherd. Derek John is Executive Producer. Merritt Jacob is Senior Technical Director. If you have any cultural mysteries you want us to decode, email us at DecoderRing@slate.com. Want more Decoder Ring? Do you often forget that Jesus is with you in the boat when you face life's storms? Is your tendency to panic and worry before you pray? Do you replace your sense of “peace” with panic? If you answered yes to any of these questions this edition of Finish Strong is for you.Steve Gardner realized that his sense of God's presence was “underdeveloped.” He wanted a greater awareness of God not only during the storms of life but all the time. He set out on a journey to develop a plan to help him start and end every day with a deeper understanding of who God is and who he is in God's eyes. This journey resulted in the creation of a powerful, Biblically based, God inspired “prayer” that will help you achieve Inner Peace in 40 seconds. The world needs every teen to reach their full potential, and college prep, should not hold them back. College prep and education should be the vehicle that gives teens the self-efficacy and other skills they need to know they can solve problems that matter to them in the real world. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is already showing us how disruptive it can be. Education will need to adjust quickly, because knowledge alone will soon be unimportant. Problem solving and humanity will become more important as well.Teens have tremendous advantages (like a sense of curiosity and adventure, a willingness to try new things, a desire to become great, etc.) that are mostly wasted in the education industry, and especially in the common approach to college prep. We need to stop missing out on this incredible opportunity to empower our teens. College prep is the best way to empower them, and the approach we take in the Ivy League Challenge (find core values, begin working to solve real problems that violate those core values, etc) is the best way to give them the skills they actually need. This podcast is based on Simon Sinek's book "Start with Why"-----To register for the Ivy League Challenge, visit our website. To follow on Instagram: @TheIvyLeagueChallengeTo join us on our Facebook group for parents:Or schedule a meeting with Steve here
