The case of the Golden State Killer puzzled police and amateur sleuths for decades. Then, in April 2018, a Sacramento man was arrested and charged. How did police find their man, and what led them to him after years of nothing but cold clues and lack of leads? Genealogy is a complex, and often misunderstood science. But, according to Professor Dennis McNevin, an expert in the field of forensic genetics, it's a technique police are becoming more and more interested in. Join former Crime Insiders Forensics host Kathryn Fox as she unpacks Dennis' work and career, and dives into cases like the Golden State Killer and the Somerton man. This episode references men's violence against women and sexual assault. Continuing on with our Oceania theme, Conor and Dana Banana are back and chatting to Aussie designer, Craig E. Somerton.  Craig is still on a high after a successful Kickstarter with his first published game, Farm Hand.   He talks about his journey in board gaming and designing, and in particular, his affinity for trick-taking games.  He even hints at his new design!  As usual, when Conor and Banana get together, the episode is full of tangents that seem to go nowhere.  Somewhere in between, is the occasional nod to a classic game in Five Tribes and Agricola while Craig gives us his no.1 trick-taker of all time. Somerton himself fed plenty of falsehoods into the fannish ecosystem, but how much of this is about a pattern of, to borrow Stephen Colbert's phrase, fandom “truthiness,” which we can see far beyond a single bad actor? Join Kyle and Ardon as they delve into two of the most perplexing cases we've ever heard of; The Somerton Man case and the Peter Bergmann case.  EPISODE CONTENT WARNING: MENTIONS OF SUICIDE On Dec. 1, 1948, beachgoers came across a dead man on Australia's Somerton beach. Well-dressed, and with no signs of trauma, his identity and cause of death eluded local police. Soon, investigators dubbed him the “Somerton Man.” As their investigation deepened, so did the mystery. Not only did the man's possessions offer few clues, but investigators also found a slip of paper in the man's pocket which read “Tamám Shud,” Persian for, “it is finished.” It wasn't until as recent as 2022 that the identity of the Somerton man had been identified. The circumstances of the Somerton Man's death were so confusing, that it also started a media frenzy. The Peter Bergmann case pertains to the mysterious death of an unidentified man in Sligo, County Sligo, Ireland, on or around 16 June 2009. The man, using the alias "Peter Bergmann", had checked into the Sligo City Hotel on 12 June, where he stayed during the majority of his visit to Sligo. The man's movements were captured on CCTV throughout the town; however, the details of his actions and intentions remain unknown. His interactions with other people were limited, and little is known of his origins or the reason for his visit. In this edition of Mid Atlantic, Roifield Brown discusses the aftermath of recent triple by-elections in Britain, which have been bad news for the Tories. Labour secured victories in Selby and Anstey, overturning a significant Tory majority, while the Liberal Democrats unseated the Conservatives in Somerton and Frome. The by-elections were triggered by Boris Johnson's resignation, and the Tories managed to hold on to his old seat in Uxbridge and South Ryslip with a reduced majority. These by-elections highlight UK voters' increasing tactical decision-making, leading to shifting fortunes for parties in different constituencies. The discussion delves into the significance of each by-election and their potential implications for Rishi Sunak and the Tories. While the results are bad for the Tories, Corey Bernard argues they are not as disastrous as predicted. The program also explores the impact of local issues on election outcomes, particularly in Uxbridge and South Ryslip.Additionally, the conversation touches upon the challenges of party cohesion within Labour, citing a mismatch between the National Labour outfit and regional mayors. Despite Labour's wins, the discussion raises questions about their ability to secure victories in traditional Conservative and blue wall seats.Overall, the by-election results suggest shifts in voter behavior and signal potential challenges for both major parties in future elections. Three by-elections and a win each for the three main parties. Labour won with the biggest electoral swing in their history in Selby and Ainsty, the Lib Dems won a huge majority in Somerton and Frome and the Conservatives just about held their seat in Uxbridge. On the surface, the set of results are better than what the Tories had anticipated. But, better than terrible can still be pretty bad.And does Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan need to rethink his ULEZ zone if Labour want to avoid struggling in next year's inner city campaigning? It sounds like Keir Starmer and Labour think so.We're joined in News Agents HQ by Labour's Emily Thornberry and Sarah Olney from the Liberal Democrats to pick apart the results, and what this could mean for Tories, Labour and Lib Dems ahead of next year's general election. For exclusive daily videos from The News Agents visit Global Player: https://www.globalplayer.com/videos/brands/news-agents/the-news-agents/You can watch our interviews in full at https://www.globalplayer.com/videos/brands/news-agents/the-news-agents/The News Agents is a Global Player Original and a Persephonica Production.

The Tories are defending three seats next week, and could lose them all. Boris Johnson's old seat, Uxbridge and South Ruislip, Nigel Adams's old seat, Selby and Ainsty, and David Warburton's old seat, Somerton and Frome, are all being contested. How are the Tories trying to win back voters? And is it wise of Rishi Sunak to, as is rumoured he's going to, do a reshuffle straight after the results come in? On today's episode of the Occult Symbolism and Pop Culture with Isaac Weishaupt podcast we have a special episode where we'll hear an interview I did with Mary Wild! I begged and pleaded for me to share part of this show with my audience because it really is so good and she very happily obliged so here's the first half of our 90 minute conversation about the occult symbolism in Eyes Wide Shut! You've heard me talk about this film many times, but the reason this episode is important is because of the clarifying information that Mary provides to me!Mary Wild is a busy woman- I discovered her on my favorite horror film podcast: Evolution of Horror where she contributes to a Freudian analysis of horror films. She runs a Patreon-exclusive podcast on her "Mary Wild" channel (patreon.com/marywild) where she does film interpretation, philosophy and connects the ideas to Freudian psychoanalysis. She describes it as "AMSR for intellectual guttersnipes". She's also held the "Projections" lecture series at the Freud Museum. She's got tons of great episodes on her Patreon- including a dialogue with Dwayne Monroe on human encounters with A.I. in cinema, she's got full episodes examining the David Cronenberg films, and so much more- including your boy! We did a full 90 minutes of straight fire on Eyes Wide Shut. We'll go through the rest of the film and get a good conversation in on the final scene where Ziegler gives Bill Harford the warning about messing with these elites and their sex & death rituals..."Isaac Weishaupt joins me to discuss possible occult symbolism contained in Stanley Kubrick's erotic mystery psychological drama film Eyes Wide Shut (1999). In the film, Doctor Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) is shocked when his wife Alice (Nicole Kidman) reveals that she had contemplated having an affair a year earlier. Bill then embarks on a night-long adventure, during which he infiltrates the masked orgy of an unnamed secret society.Isaac and I discuss the underlying significance of various aspects of the film, including Victor Ziegler's party, Nick Nightingale as Bill's 'dark double', the Naval Officer fantasy, the failed sexual encounter with Domino, the 'Fidelio' password, the recurring 'rainbow' signifier, the masked orgy, Mandy's death, and how these elements might be connected to secret societies, sex magic rituals, The Wizard of Oz, the Star of Ishtar, eros, thanatos, and much more. For reference: Bill's masked kiss at the Somerton mansion orgy in Eyes Wide Shut (1999), and René Magritte's painting The Lovers II (1928)"NOW UP AD-FREE ON SUPPORTER FEEDS! It's Wednesday, July 5th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark How Pakistani Muslims blocked church construction Police in Pakistan charged a Christian with blasphemy against Islam last Friday. The day before, Haroon Shahzad had posted 1 Corinthians 10:18-21 on Facebook. Verse 20 says, “What pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons.”  Muslims in the area were about to hold a festival that involved a sacrifice. Morning Star News reports that the Muslim blasphemy charge against Shahzad stemmed from personal grudges. The government had allotted his family a valuable piece of land for constructing a church building. Local Muslims had been trying to keep Christians from doing so. And the blasphemy charge was the latest attempt.  Ireland's march for life On Saturday, over 10,000 people joined the march for life in Ireland. New data from the Irish health minister, Stephen Donnelly, revealed that abortion in the country increased by 27% in 2022 to 8,500 abortions. Pro-lifers are protesting new legislation that would allow the murder of unborn babies for any reason up to six months of pregnancy. Lawmakers may also end conscience protections for doctors who refuse to perform abortions.  Supreme Court affirms Christian web designer's religious liberty On Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a landmark ruling in a religious liberty case. Lorie Smith, a Christian web designer, challenged a Colorado anti-discrimination law. The legislation would have required her to make websites for faux homosexual weddings. The high court ruled 6-3 in favor of Smith. The majority ruling stated, “No public accommodations law is immune from the demands of the Constitution.” Alliance Defending Freedom noted, “The U.S. Supreme Court rightly reaffirmed that the government can't force Americans to say things they don't believe. The court reiterated that it's unconstitutional for the state to eliminate from the public square ideas it dislikes, including the belief that marriage is the union of husband and wife.” 6,000 Methodist churches abandon denomination Last week, the number of churches leaving the United Methodist Church surpassed 6,000.  Since 2019, 6,182 churches have disaffiliated from the mainline denomination. The departures have occurred as the United Methodist Church has divided over the issue of homosexuality. Many departing congregations do not support sexually perverted lifestyles.  Over 4,000 of the disaffiliations occurred this year alone. American dream means home ownership GoDaddy surveyed over 1,000 small businesses on the latest perceptions of the American Dream.  For a long time, the American Dream has been associated with financial success. However, a minority of respondents identified owning a home or being your own boss with the American Dream. People were more likely to define the dream as living comfortably or feeling happy in life.  Fara Howard with GoDaddy said, “American small-business owners are thinking beyond revenue and sales growth when they consider what the American Dream means to them. Today, it's more about feeling a sense of belonging, freedom, happiness and work-life balance.” 1 Timothy 6:6-8 says, “Now godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content.” Worldview listeners weigh in from Arizona, Indiana, and Minnesota And finally, the emails from Worldview listeners just started arriving yesterday, sharing what they appreciate about our unique Christian newscast. Sherri Taylor Magana in Somerton, Arizona wrote, “The Worldview is very important to me. I read information not found or heard on other news media. Adam provides a service to Christians that benefits us.  Lord, thank you for providing the funds for the newscast to continue. In Jesus' name, Amen.” James Minter in Depauw, Indiana wrote, “I listen to The Worldview each weekday and find it very informative. I have told many people about it. Several of them have subscribed. Thank you for all you do.” And Addison Randazzo, age 18,  who lives in Alexandria, Minnesota, wrote, “I have been listening to The Worldview for several years now, and always look forward to getting the daily email. I take in a lot of media daily. That's why starting my day with your Christian newscast from a Biblical worldview is extremely meaningful. I especially enjoy the fact that you share stories of persecuted Christians which I do not see elsewhere.” Take a moment and email me what you appreciate in a 2-6 sentence email to Adam@TheWorldview.com.  Please include your full name, city and state, or country if outside the U.S. 8 Worldview listeners gave $840.50 toward $20,000 Friday goal Toward our immediate $20,000 goal by this Friday, July 7th, eight Worldview listeners made donations. We appreciate the help of Genevieve in Wheat Ridge, Colorado who gave $5.50, Patricia in Elkton, Florida who gave $10, and Kimberly in Beech Grove, Indiana who gave $25. And we're grateful to God for the help of Laurel in Buckley, Washington who gave $50, Lisa in Eden Prairie, Minnesota who gave $100, Danielle in Brighton, Colorado who gave $150, Ingrid in San Antonio, Texas who gave $200, and James in Kennewick, Washington who gave $300. Those 8 Worldview listeners gave a total of, drum roll please, (audio of drum roll)  $840.50!  (audio of crowd cheering) That means we still need to raise $19,159.50 by this Friday.  I wonder if there might be 5 listeners who could jump in during this first week with a gift of $100 per month for 12 months or a one-time gift of $1,200.  That would mean we would still need to find 11 listeners to pledge $50/month for 12 months. And another 22 listeners to pledge $25/month for 12 months. Go to TheWorldview.com, click on Give at the top right, and select the dollar amount that the Lord is prompting you to give. Make sure to select the “recurring” tab if that's your wish. Close   And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, July 5th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Or get the Generations app through Google Play or The App Store. I'm Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com). Seize the day for Jesus Christ.

Whether it be hidden messages transmitted around the world from the hundreds of operating number stations, or the bizarre illustrations on the sheepskin pages of a medieval manuscript, unsolved ciphers and codes have been a compelling source of mystery for centuries. In the annals of true crime, cold cases like the Zodiac killer and the Somerton man have inspired people from around the world to come together and take up the challenge of solving their peculiar riddles. From national intelligence agencies, to armchair enthusiasts, breakthroughs have been made by individuals from across the spectrum of experience. One similar case has largely managed to escape the limelight, however, that of a late 19th Century man whose true identity was never known, hanged for murdering his wife, who left the world a series of unsolved ciphers that promised to unmask the whole mysterious affair. On December 1, 1948, an unknown man was found lying dead on the sand on Somerton Beach next to the neighborhood of Glenelg, about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Adelaide, South Australia. He had no money or identification on him, the labels in his clothing were cut off, and his minimal possessions yielded no clues. Further adding to the mystery, a rolled-up scrap of paper with the Persian phrase "tamám shud," translating to "is over" or "is finished," was found in the man's watch pocket around the time of his autopsy. The scrap was later discovered torn from a copy of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, a circa 11th-century collection of poems by Khayyam, known as "the Astronomer-Poet of Persia." The book found tossed into a car after a public appeal by the police appeared to have previous writing indentations on a page adjacent to the torn-out one, revealing a local phone number and text speculated to be a coded message. With no further clues as to the Somerton Man's identity other than an abandoned suitcase left at the Adelaide railway station, a plaster cast was made of the man's bust following the coroner's inquest, and the body was embalmed nine days after its discovery and buried. For almost 74 years, the mystery of the Somerton has intrigued authorities, amateur sleuths, and the general public, including physicist, Electrical and Electronic Engineering professor Dr. Derek Abbott. For over a decade, Dr. Abbott and his team of grad students at the University of Adelaide worked on cracking the code found in the Rubaiyat and attempting to arrange a genetic DNA analysis. In partnership with internationally recognized forensic genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick, Abbott and Fitzpatrick announced on July 26, 2022, that they have finally uncovered the identity of Australia's most famous "John Doe." Extracting DNA from chest hairs found in the Somerton Man's plaster cast has led them to a name and an occupation. But will this name lead to solving the remaining puzzle pieces? Pathologists at the time believed he was likely poisoned, but why, and by whom? Was there a Cold War connection, and why did he spend his last day in Adelaide? Circling back to the alternate name for this case, tamám shud, is this mystery really over, is it finished? Visit our webpage on this episode for a lot more information.
