Or maybe you have a whole collection but aren't sure how to use them? Join four crystal nerds, healers, workers, and lovers for a casual chat about all things crystals.   Kyle Perez: Hello, and welcome to another crystal confab. Today, we're staying with another, not necessarily ‘gemstone-gemstone', and I'm joined by Adam and Nicholas, and we're going to dive into Jet. How many of you love a bit of Jet action?   Nicholas Pearson: I've grown fond of it over the years.   Adam Barralet: Yeah. Me too. I think one of the really interesting things a lot of people find is just tactile-wise, how it feels so different to a crystal. And, you know, one of the problems I think all of us probably get is people sending pictures or trying to identify what this crystal is. And the great thing about when it comes to black crystals, Jet is so much lighter.   So if it's a really, really light crystal, then it's going to be really, really easy to go up that Jet type of thing. So that's one thing. But I, you know, I've had experiences and I'll share them later on about just the tactileness of Jet is really, really nice. But, I believe it's been used for a long, long time and has a really great history about it as well. And who better to tell us about the history than Nicholas?   Nicholas: Yeah. This is one of those rocks that I think we can trace approximately 30,000 years of human use of. Going back a really long time. In, you know, the earliest instances, people didn't necessarily make the strong geological distinction between Jet and related materials. Kennel coal and lignite and sometimes black shale were treated very similarly.   So we kinda have to have a little grace in interpreting the data. But it is a stone that is inherently in between, and I find that really magical. One of the most important sources for Jet in the ancient world was in Whitby and what is now modern day Whitby in Yorkshire. I have a bit of Whitby Jet here from the coast of England, and it is my favorite piece in my collection, of very few pieces of Jet. But I think it is really marvelous to imagine that particularly during the Roman occupation of Britain, this material was traded across thousands upon thousands of miles.   We find evidence of Whitby Jet carvings in faraway Switzerland and Germany, as well as in Rome proper. So this was a commodity that was traded for a very long time. In other parts of the world where Jet can be found, we find similarly ancient uses of it. But when this kind of Romano British center production was in full swing about thirty five hundred years ago, Jet seemed to acquire, if we read between the lines, a number of uses that are a little bit weird, a little queer, we might even say. And one of my favorite examples is, the remains of a a skeleton found in a a Roman period burial.   The skeleton is officially known as skeleton six five two, because we don't have names and dates and ages for all of these figures. And there are a lot of confusing data points about this. This person was interred with a lot of very lavish expensive funeral goods, including jewelry, but they were buried in the part of the cemetery that you would put people who were on the outskirts, the fringe, the beggars, the thieves. So we have a little bit of contradictory information there. When this area was being excavated for the first time, doing, osteological analysis,

100 Years of Dracula: The Most Iconic Portrayals Ranked

Fully-Booked: Literary Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 28, 2025 42:05

In this final installment of our March podcast villain series, we decided to end with a character who has been interpreted in more ways than almost any other: Count Dracula.Meaghan and Arthur dove into this rich, multifaceted figure who has stood the test of time, appearing in literature, theater, film, television, comics, and even ballet. While Dracula is far from the first fictional villain, his enduring presence makes him one of the most iconic.Across generations, the character has been portrayed in so many forms that it almost becomes impossible to count. So we took on the challenge of tracing Dracula's origins, his evolution across media, and our own personal favorites from his cinematic portrayals. The Roots of DraculaWe began by introducing listeners to the original story of Dracula, the novel published in 1897 by Irish author Bram Stoker. The novel is set up in an epistolary format, meaning it's told through letters, journal entries, telegrams, and various documents — a storytelling method that adds a documentary-like authenticity to the supernatural tale.Much of it was written while Stoker stayed in Whitby, England, a location that eventually inspired part of the book's setting. In the story, Jonathan Harker travels to Transylvania to help a mysterious count named Dracula purchase property in England. Things spiral into horror as Dracula makes his way to London, bringing with him death and chaos. As we discussed, there's a longstanding debate about Dracula's real-life inspiration. The common theory connects him to Vlad the Impaler, a ruthless 15th-century ruler known for his violent methods. There's also speculation around Hungarian countess Elizabeth Bathory, infamous for allegedly bathing in the blood of young girls. However, newer scholarship suggests Stoker might have chosen the name "Dracula" simply because he misunderstood it to mean “devil” in Romanian. We also touched on the thematic weight of Dracula's character - how, especially during the Victorian era, he symbolized temptation, corruption, foreignness, and disease. His ability to lure women into his power and feed on them while they remained semi-willing created a metaphorical blend of sexuality, danger, and the fear of the “other” that resonated with readers of the time.Dracula on the Screen: From Shadows to SoundWe explored how Dracula's story was first visualized in cinema, starting with the silent film Nosferatu (1922), a German adaptation that changed character names to avoid copyright issues.Despite efforts by Stoker's widow to have all copies destroyed, a few prints survived, and the film became a cult classic. Nosferatu laid the groundwork for what would become the Dracula visual standard — looming figures, haunting silhouettes, and unsettling stillness. We then examined the 1931 Dracula film starring Bela Lugosi, the first officially licensed screen adaptation. Lugosi's performance shaped the image of Dracula in popular culture: the accent, the cape, the stare. We learned that Lugosi performed the role phonetically, not speaking English fluently, which added to the eerie stillness of his portrayal. Interestingly, a Spanish-language version was filmed simultaneously using the same sets, which many critics consider to be superior in certain technical aspects.Dracula became the foundation for Universal Studios' “monster movie” identity, alongside Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Wolfman. These films established a shared aesthetic that would be drawn upon for decades.Waves of Interpretation: Gothic Horror to Sexy VampiresFrom the 1950s through the 1970s, we saw a gothic revival of Dracula through Hammer Horror films, most prominently featuring Christopher Lee. We both appreciated Lee's version — a charismatic, regal Dracula — and talked about how he portrayed the character in seven different Hammer films. In some of those, he even refused to speak if he found the lines poorly written, creating a more silent, menacing figure. The 1970s also brought in more playful and unconventional interpretations, like Blacula, a Blaxploitation reimagining. We highlighted how William Marshall's portrayal introduced a sophisticated, socially aware Dracula figure who challenged racial themes head-on. There was also Frank Langella's Dracula, which leaned heavily into romantic seduction, further evolving the character from monster to tragic anti-hero.Then came the 1992 film Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola, starring Gary Oldman, Keanu Reeves, and Winona Ryder. While visually rich and ambitious in scope, we felt it was uneven — a mix of great performances and questionable choices, particularly with casting and pacing.Modern Spins and ReinventionWe also explored how Dracula has fared in the 21st century. In the 2000s, the character began to be molded in more experimental or comedic directions. We discussed Dracula 2000, which offered a wildly original origin story — portraying Dracula as Judas Iscariot, cursed with immortality for betraying Jesus. Despite the film's overall mediocrity, we admired the creativity of that take. Then, there was Dracula Untold (2014), a more action-oriented approach that reconnected Dracula to Vlad the Impaler. While not universally loved, we found it entertaining and appreciated its attempt to craft a distinct backstory. Meanwhile, the 2020 BBC/Netflix miniseries Dracula starring Claes Bang impressed both of us deeply. We praised it as one of the most creative and engaging portrayals in recent memory, successfully blending horror, humor, and charisma. We also talked about recent comedic takes like Renfield (2023), with Nicolas Cage going full camp as Dracula. Cage's performance stood out despite the film's weaknesses — we both agreed he injected new life into a familiar character. Additionally, animated versions like Hotel Transylvania took Dracula in a fully comedic, family-friendly direction.Cultural Impact and CuriositiesBeyond film, Dracula has appeared across multiple mediums. We were fascinated to learn that he had a run in Marvel comics in the 1970s in Tomb of Dracula, which also introduced Blade. There were radio adaptations, most notably one with Orson Welles, and even ballet productions like Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary, combining gothic horror with Canadian ballet. We included several TV portrayals in our honorable mentions, such as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode “Buffy vs. Dracula,” and a Supernatural episode featuring a Dracula-inspired shapeshifter. These versions brought humor and novelty to the character, continuing his evolution into satire and pastiche. And, of course, we couldn't forget the Count from Sesame Street — likely the only Dracula interpretation who's never been evil, only educational. Our Personal Rankings and Final ThoughtsWe each compiled a top-five ranking of our favorite portrayals of Dracula. While our picks varied in the lower ranks — with shoutouts to Nosferatu, Blacula, Dracula Untold, Nicolas Cage's Renfield Dracula, and the 1931 Bela Lugosi version — we both agreed that Claes Bang's portrayal in the 2020 miniseries was number one. His performance captured a blend of menace, charm, and unpredictability that felt refreshing and memorable. As we wrapped up the episode, we reflected on how Dracula, as a character, has endured through decades because of his adaptability. Whether terrifying, seductive, tragic, or hilarious, Dracula continues to evolve with the times. From Victorian fears to modern humor, he offers creators endless possibilities to reimagine what a vampire — and a villain — can be.We're wrapping up villain month with this tribute, but we're excited to start a brand new theme next week. Dracula might be going back to his coffin for now, but he'll certainly rise again.

We were inspired to carry out further research into the critical mineral potential of the region we live in, the North of England, which we present in this podcast. At present, the UK does not extract any of the 18 critical minerals on the 2021 list published by the British Geological Survey (BGS). This renders the UK completely reliant on international supply which is a big problem, and one that we must try to address through increased mineral exploration and mining in the near future. In order to provide a full picture of the critical mineral potential of our region, we explore the rich mining history of the North of England, dating back to the Bronze Age at sites such as Alderly Edge (Figure 3). We also investigate current critical mineral projects: Li exploration around the Weardale Granite and Potash mining near the town of Whitby. Finally, we speak to Dr James Shaw and Dr Adam Eskdale who have worked on fluorspar mineralisation in the South Pennine Orefield and cobalt mineralisation in the Lake District, respectively. They provide insights into these deposits and to potential barriers to their extraction in the future. A big thank you goes to Dr James Shaw and Adam Eskdale for sharing their expertise with our student chapter!

This Ontario town had a swastika burned into a soccer field. Now residents want to ban the symbol nationwide

Over the last six months, residents of Whitby, Ont., have discovered multiple Nazi swastikas around towbn, including carved into the walls of their main library's washroom and burned with chemicals onto a popular soccer field. Police are investigating, but no one's been caught. The antisemitic incidents have shocked the local Jewish community of 1,000 families, members of which say, by and large, that most people feel relatively safe in Whitby. They're also grateful for the latest support from the mayor, town council, Durham regional police and local faith groups. In response to the events, last week, the Town of Whitby voted to ask Ottawa to ban the Nazi swastika, also pledging to develop better internal protocols to handle future hate symbols when discovered. The town's motions have had a domino effect, and politicians in neighbouring communities are taking notice. Durham Region councillors will consider the same swastika ban on Feb. 12, while the Pickering will consider it at the end of the month. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, we hear from Rabbi Tzali Borenstein, spiritual leader of Chabad of Durham; Whitby town councillor Chris Leahy, who brought the original motions forward; Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy; and professor Tessa Troughton, whose child has witnessed Nazi salutes at her local high school, including students mimicking Elon Musk. What we talked about: Read the motions passed by Whitby Town Council on Monday Feb. 3, 2025 to a) support the call to ban the swastika and b) to develop a protocol to react better to cases of antisemitism when municipal staff discover it. Learn more about B'nai Brith Canada's campaign to ban the display of the Nazi swastika by modifying the criminal code. Hear more from Durham District school trustee Emma Cunningham about antisemitism in Whitby, on The CJN Daily's political panel, from Dec. 2024. Musique : Billie Eilish "Birds of a feather" Hébergé par Ausha. For our Series 5 finale, we're talking about the history and folklore of England's largest county, and Eleanor is telling a story so epic we've split it into three ridings! Or, should that be three parts?!We start off chatting about St Hilary of Poitier, a right pain of a saint known for his pedantry and not much else, after which we yomp on to Yorkshire and get a bit literary! We discuss all sorts to do with the county's past, not least the legacy of the Brontë Sisters, Whitby and its enduring Goth Weekend, and its claim to possess England's oldest pub, and plenty else, all before Eleanor offers up a silver platter of tasty County Dishes, including Yorkshire Pudding, Ilkley Cakes, and, of course, Parkin. As for folklore, interspersed with some excerpts from next Saturday's Local Legends interview with Yorkshire-based folklorist, author and musician Paul Weatherhead, we talk about UFO abductions, demonic cats guarding treasure on lonely hilltops, screaming skulls, greedy dragons, lumbering giants, and much more besides. Then it's on to the main event: the first third of Eleanor's sharp-clawed mystery story, "Old Stinker."Fingers-crossed you enjoy the episode, be sure to check out the second part of Old Stinker tomorrow and its conclusion on Wednesday, and we'll also be back on Thursday with the first episode in our new Bonus Series Magus, about the legendary life of King Solomon, all before the full Local Legends chat with Paul comes out on Saturday! The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. He and his brother Chad (Mar. 2) were from an English family, educated under Saint Aidan (Aug. 31) of Lindisfarne. Both brothers entered monastic life at Lindisfarne and later became bishops. Cedd travelled as an evangelist among the people of Essex, where Saint Finan (Feb. 17) consecrated him to be their first bishop. He founded two monasteries in Essex, one of whose churches still stands; he built yet another monastery at Lastingham in Yorkshire, where he lived until his repose. He spoke both Irish and Anglo-Saxon, and served as a translator for the Irish at the Synod of Whitby in 664. He reposed at Lastingham not long after the Synod.

No A.I. voices are ever used in the show.IN THIS EPISODE: “The Last Voyage of Demeter” is an extract from the most terrifying vampire fiction in literary history, Bram Stoker's “Dracula” from 1897. The thrilling novel is a gothic horror classic written in epistolary form through a series of journal entries, newspaper articles, and correspondence. This is the book's suspenseful Chapter 7, delving into the final sea voyage of Demeter, the Russian ship unknowingly carrying Transylvania's undead Count Dracula. When a ghost ship arrives in Whitby harbor, the locals search for clues about how the doomed vessel's crew vanished. Soon, the captain's log is discovered, but the translated correspondence does nothing more than strike terror in the hearts of all who read it. Weeks before its final destination, strange and supernatural events began haunting the ship. The captain started keeping a log to record the death, darkness, and fear that had taken hold of his crew. Of course, “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” was also recently made into a film – but we're working from the original writings of Bram Stoker here, not a movie script. Fossil Stone Benefits | 5 Fossils for Crystal Healing

Love & Light Live Crystal Healing Podcast

Fossils can be found in nearly every part of the earth, though for some reason, they're often overlooked by crystal healers who are perhaps lacking the knowledge of all the fossil stone benefits they're missing out on! Perhaps it's because they often lack the bright colors and glittering, gemmy appearance of many crystals…or perhaps it's because many crystal workers are unsure of how to work with them. Whatever the reason, it's time to change that, because incorporating fossils into your crystal work can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling. Though the types of fossils vary, they do share a set of energetic qualities whether they're plant or animal fossils, no matter the mineral type. Individual fossil types have added properties, but all fossils share the following qualities: Common Healing Properties of Fossils:   Enhances your connection with nature and its flora and fauna Promotes journey work Facilitates access to your past life memories Enhances communication with your guides Promotes energetic protection Connects you to your ancestors (familial, spiritual, land spirits, etc.) Facilitates grounding Connects you with the energy of the Earth element     If you're interested in developing a relationship with fossils, here are a few of my favorites to explore… Top 5 Fossils for Crystal Healing:   #1 - Ammonite Fossils for Crystal Healing Of all the fossils I've worked with, Ammonites may be my favorite. They're a type of cephalopod and their spiral formation evokes a mystical quality that humans have been attracted to for thousands of years. Ammonite fossils are particularly beautiful, and the best are found in Madagascar, England, and Peru. There are various legends and folklore surrounding Ammonite fossils. For example, in England, people referred to Ammonites as “snake stones.” The story behind this is that St. Hilda of Whitby (614-680) prayed for dangerous snakes to be turned to coiled stones, in order to clear the land for a convent (other versions of the lore say St. Hilda turned the snakes to stone to protect the nuns at Whitby Abbey). People believed these “snake stones” to be holy, or at least lucky, and wore them as charms, often with a snake head carved at the end. One genus of ammonites is still known as Hildoceras in the saint's honor. Properties of Ammonite Fossils: Promotes acceptance Facilitates spiritual journey work and inner work Enhances your connection with Goddess energy Facilitates past life recall Enhances your present moment awareness Facilitates animal communication Assists with receiving guidance from your ancestors Promotes grounding Enhances your connection to Earth energy and nature Aids in recalling your dreams or uncovering past life memories Assists in developing a regular meditation practice Learn more about Ammonite Fossils here.   #2 - Belemnite Fossils for Crystal Healing Also known as Thunderstones, Belemnite Fossils are records of a type of squid-like Cephalopod that inhabited the earth from the Triassic period until the Cretaceous period. The “cone” is the most common fossilized portion of the creature, and they're often found in a sort of bullet- or horn-shaped fossil. Properties of Belemnite Fossils: Aids in decision-making Encourages you to take action Promotes mental clarity Assists with enhancing focus Enhances your connection to your inner voice Facilitates the process of receiving intuitive guidance #3 - Echinoid Fossils for Crystal Healing Echinoids are fossilized Sea Urchins that go by many colloquial names depending on their specific shape. According to Kenneth McNamara, some of the names used to describe them include Thunderstones, Shepherd's Crowns, Sheep's Hearts, Bishop's Knees, Fairy Heads, Fairy Loaves, Chedworth Buns, and Snake's Eggs. My favorite name for them is “Fairy Loaf” because they really do look like tiny little loaves...
