The autumn wind howled across the rugged cliffs of Whitby, driving a thick, salty spray against the stone walls of the old rectory. Inside, the fire crackled, casting long, dancing shadows across the room where Mina Murray and her dear friend Lucy Westenra sat. Lucy looked pale, her usual bright spirit dampened by a strange, recurring dream of a dark silhouette outside her window.

Like, really busy.So I'm breaking it all down for you — what I loved, what surprised me, where I found quieter moments, and whether I think Whitby is actually worth your time. In this episode of the Anglotopia Podcast, Jonathan Thomas sits down with Tim Barber, Yorkshire Blue Badge guide and founder of Real Yorkshire Tours, for an in-depth traveler's guide to one of England's most captivating and varied regions. Tim brings over a decade of guiding experience and a background in geography, geology, and marketing to the conversation, explaining why Yorkshire — at 6,000 square miles — deserves far more than a single day stopover between London and Edinburgh. The pair cover everything from the dramatic differences between the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, to the best way to experience York Minster, to why the Yorkshire Wolds is the region's best-kept secret. Tim also unpacks his hugely popular All Creatures Great and Small filming locations tour, explains what the Blue Badge qualification actually means for travelers, shares his personal recommendations for how many days to spend and where to stay, and offers practical advice for Americans planning their first Yorkshire adventure — including the one language misunderstanding that left him without his lunch. Always look for it when booking a guide. Yorkshire is England's largest region at 6,000 square miles, with more landscape variety than almost anywhere else in the country — from wild Pennine moorland and rolling Dales to a hundred miles of coastline and the little-known chalk uplands of the Yorkshire Wolds. If you only have one day in the countryside, Tim recommends the Yorkshire Dales over the North York Moors — not because the Moors aren't spectacular, but because the Dales offer slightly more varied scenery and you'll still get a taste of moorland driving over the tops. York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and contains 65% of all medieval stained glass in England — saved during the Civil War by a Yorkshireman who threatened his troops with death if they touched it. The All Creatures Great and Small new series has overtaken Downton Abbey in US viewing figures on PBS Masterpiece — and Tim's filming locations tour takes in Grassington (Darrowby), Helen's Farm, the church where James and Helen married, and more. The Yorkshire Wolds — a chalk upland area east of York — is Tim's top hidden gem recommendation: barely known even to locals, with picture-postcard villages, chalk streams, and stunning dry valleys almost entirely free of tourists. Americans typically underestimate how much time they need in Yorkshire. Tim's ideal recommendation is five days, covering York, the Yorkshire Dales, the North York Moors and coast, Fountains Abbey, and a stately home. York makes the best base for a Yorkshire visit, with easy rail and road access to almost every corner of the region — though Harrogate is a great alternative for those focused on the Dales and All Creatures tours. Haworth and the Brontë Parsonage offer a very different experience from the open Dales — a darkened millstone grit industrial village where Tim drives clients up onto the moorland tops so they can feel the wind and understand where Wuthering Heights came from. Jonathan is personally planning a two-to-three day Yorkshire visit after completing his Hadrian's Wall walk this summer, and Tim recommends Helmsley, Rievaulx Abbey, and Whitby as excellent options accessible by public transport from York. Soundbites "I won a big pitch and I just couldn't get excited by it. I came home on Friday and said, I think I'm done. She said, well, you're 48, you can't retire yet — we'd better find you a job then." — Tim on the moment he decided to leave marketing. "I take people to absolutely beautiful places, we have a traditional lunch in a country pub, they drop off at the end of the day, I get lots of thanks and a tip, I drive home and pinch myself and think — have I really been at work?" — Tim on loving his second career. "She just sort of said, I just can't believe it. It's more beautiful than I ever thought it would be. To see a reaction like that, where the landscape had created that kind of emotion — that's a pretty special thing." — Tim on a lifelong James Herriot fan finally seeing the Dales. "The history of York is the history of England. You can actually do it all on foot. You don't have to jump on trains or tubes. A lot of the stuff is within the city walls." — Tim on what makes York so extraordinary. "65 % of all the medieval stained glass in England is in York Minster. Because during the Reformation, a Yorkshireman told his parliamentary troops: you do not touch York Minster, under pain of death." — Tim on how Yorkshire saved its own history. "You'd be driving down little tiny country lanes in the Dales that are just difficult to pass on. You just couldn't get a 55-seat coach down them." — Tim on why the All Creatures filming locations can only be done in a small vehicle. "I knew there was a Yorkshire Terrier and I'd heard of a Yorkshire Pudding — but I can't believe what you've got to offer here." — a typical American tour operator reaction on first seeing the region, as recounted by Tim. "Yorkshire men have more call centres here than anywhere else in England because people want to talk to somebody with a trustworthy voice who tells them how it is and is honest and straightforward." — Tim on the Yorkshire character. "She said she'd just have chips — so I booked a restaurant that did pub grub. And about quarter to twelve she said, could we pull up at this garage? She came out with a bag of crisps. And I suddenly realised I wasn't going to get any lunch." — Tim on the chips vs crisps language trap. "People spend five or six days in London, five or six days in Edinburgh — and they always say, I wish I'd spent longer up here. Yorkshire feels a little bit more real and authentic." — Tim on why Americans should slow down and give Yorkshire more time. Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

The sound that I was allocated for this track was described as a Zande drinking song, from a collection of wax cylinder recordings of Zande songs, dances and spoken language made by social anthropologist Edward Evans-Pritchard in South Sudan between 1928 and 1930. I spent some time thinking about the collection of songs that was taking place across the world from the end of the 19th Century right up to that time, and wondered what kind of 'drinking song' might have been collected right here, where I am in the North York Moors National Park. I listened to lots of source recordings of English drinking songs from the EFDSS Full English digital archive, but I was drawn back to the Mummers play that we perform in Whitby every year, and the character of the Doctor, who has a little bottle in his inside-outside-jacket-pocket. It's a little Nip Nap, and it's most effective if you let it run down your tip tap. It will cure all ills, and do you good. When I was listening to the recording, I was struck by the rhythmic drive of the cylinder, inserting itself into the song, unbidden. That set the tempo, and the composition came into being. Drinking songs are sung the world over. We have more in common that could ever set us apart. For me, the union of cultures through music is a shoot of hope in a world of division. Something to raise a glass to at the very least!Zande drinking song reimagined by Rebecca Denniff.———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. This piece is built around a field recording from the sound collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum of Berber beggars singing for charity.Listening to this recording, across time, what struck me was not difference but familiarity. Themes of begging, homelessness and poverty recur in traditional songs from all cultures, spanning the centuries. Despite differences in place, language and technology, poverty, hunger, social injustice, and the vulnerability that comes with these things, remains constant.Through my organisation in Whitby, Flash Company Arts, I frequently work with people experiencing homelessness and fragile economic circumstances. Hearing this recording, made more than 60 years ago, felt uncomfortably relevant to my daily work. These voices could belong to anyone, anywhere, right now.The lyric “A Begging I Will Go” is borrowed from an ancient English folk song, first printed on a black-letter broadside in 1684. And still today, all over the world, people wake each morning to the same words: A begging I will go.Nothing changes.Beggars singing for charity reimagined by Rebecca Denniff (Subphotic).———Part of the project A Century of Sounds, reimagining 100 sounds covering 100 years from the collections of the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford. He and his brother Chad (Mar. 2) were from an English family, educated under Saint Aidan (Aug. 31) of Lindisfarne. Both brothers entered monastic life at Lindisfarne and later became bishops. Cedd travelled as an evangelist among the people of Essex, where Saint Finan (Feb. 17) consecrated him to be their first bishop. He founded two monasteries in Essex, one of whose churches still stands; he built yet another monastery at Lastingham in Yorkshire, where he lived until his repose. He spoke both Irish and Anglo-Saxon, and served as a translator for the Irish at the Synod of Whitby in 664. He reposed at Lastingham not long after the Synod.

Have you ever found yourself loving the work of therapy, but feeling frustrated by systems that make it difficult for your clients to receive the help they need? Dana reached that crossroads and made a brave, intentional leap toward a practice that supports both her clinical values and her personal well-being. In this podcast episode, Dana and I talk about her path into psychotherapy, and what it looked like to slowly and thoughtfully transition from hospital work into full-time private practice.  We also dive into learning SEO as a solo practitioner, using AI without losing your human voice, and why giving your practice time to grow organically can be a powerful choice. There's so much practical wisdom in this conversation, and I'm excited for you to listen in! MEET DANA Dana is an occupational therapist who practices psychotherapy and the owner of Cedar Tree Therapy, a private practice in Whitby, Ontario. With close to a decade of mental health experience, Dana sees individuals with anxiety, eating disorders, and OCD. Learn more about Dana on her private practice website and Psychology Today profile.  In this episode:  Dana's academic background and current practice Going from clinical work to private practice  How Dana's private practice has evolved  The therapist book club  Researching marketing and SEO best practices Dana's advice for listeners  Dana's academic background and current practice  While Dana's private practice is situated in Whitby, Ontario, she completed her Master's degree in occupational therapy at McGill University in Montreal.  'I came back to Ontario after finishing my Master's, and in Ontario specifically … occupational therapists are one of the six regulated healthcare professionals that can practice controlled active psychotherapy. So, my practice is entirely psychotherapy, and my license type is that I just happen to be an occupational therapist.' - Dana Etherington Due to Ontario's regulatory laws, Dana can practice psychotherapy with an occupational therapy background. Remember to always check your province's regulations when planning your future Canadian private practice! The bridge between Dana's occupational therapy background and her current psychotherapy-focused practice is built on her appreciation for her clients. 'I loved spending the day getting to know people, and it felt like such an honor to hear people's stories. From then on, I knew that was how I wanted my career to go, and it feels so special to be trusted by clients to hear some really complicated and vulnerable parts of their lives.' - Dana Etherington  Going from clinical work to private practice After graduating, Dana didn't immediately go into private practice. She first spent time working at a psychiatric hospital beforehand. 'I was working my nine-to-five at the psychiatric hospital, and then I started my private practice part-time. I'd see maybe four clients a week after I was done with my hours at the hospital.' - Dana Etherington  Dana felt frustrated by the systemic barriers that made it difficult for people who needed support and help to find it, and that passion encouraged her to begin offering therapy in her own Ontario private practice. When Dana became a mother, she knew that she had to choose between working in the hospital and committing to her private practice.  'I knew I couldn't go on working both these jobs any longer. I was at this point where I had to make a choice: I either had to leave private practice behind or I had to jump in with both feet. So, I chose to jump in … And I have been full-time ever since 2023!' - Dana Etherington  How Dana's private practice has evolved 'I think it's the best decision I've ever made. It allows me to be the therapist I want to be, and also the mother that I want to be, too. It offers me that flexibility, it allows me to have time and space to also take care of myself. I couldn't think of a better career choice for me.' - Dana Etherington Right now, Dana has an in-person office in downtown Brooklyn as well as sees clients online.  In terms of staff, Dana currently has a contractor. She is open to expanding one day, but not right now. At this moment in time, she enjoys the time, space, and energy, and is giving the practice the chance to grow organically.  The therapist book club As a way to create more community, Dana and some of her fellow therapy colleagues have decided to launch a local therapist's book club in one of the members' offices.  They meet in person over an evening once a month, where they can discuss therapy, private practice-related work, and books that they are collectively reading about their work and specialties.  Researching marketing and SEO best practices Since Dana is running her Canadian private practice, she threw herself into researching everything there is to know about SEO.  Some of the tips she has for listeners are:  Get clear on your niche  Don't be afraid to commit to your niche  Try as best you can to consider what your ideal client is Googling when they are looking for someone like you to help them  When it comes to using AI, Dana recommends it for creating content that you may use for marketing, such as blogs. However, always humanize your work, because SEO is strongest when it is person-written and person-focused.  Dana's advice for listeners  Remember that marketing is part of your job now. It is not an extra luxury piece; it is part of reaching your ideal client and making a positive impact in the community around you. So, don't fear it, embrace it! As 2025 comes to a close, I'm looking back on a remarkable year in travel where I explored some new places in some old countries. In this Year of Travel in Review 2025, I'm sharing a high-level overview of where I traveled during the year — from England's countryside and dramatic coastlines to iconic regions of France, with the Italian Dolomites, where I led my very first Wander Your Way Adventures small group tour, woven in between. This episode isn't a deep dive into each destination (those are coming!), but rather a big-picture look at how this intensive travel season shaped my perspective, my work and what's ahead. During a late-summer and fall travel window, I explored several of England's most beloved (and quietly spectacular) regions, including Oxfordshire, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and the coastal town of Whitby in North Yorkshire. Each place offered a different pace and personality — and plenty of inspiration for future episodes. France was another highlight of 2025, with time spent in Normandy, the Loire Valley, and my favorite city, Paris — reinforcing why France remains such a cornerstone of European travel. And reminding me that I still have so much more of this fabulous country to explore). Finally, one of the most meaningful parts of this Year of Travel in Review 2025 centers on Italy — specifically the Dolomites — where I led and hosted the inaugural Wander Your Way Adventures small group tour. What an experience!Leading this first small group adventure was a defining moment for me and for my business — truly unforgettable. So tune in as I reflect on my Year of Travel in Review 2025, a season that left a lasting mark.Want to chat more about travel to Europe?Email me at Lynne@WanderYourWay.comIn this episode:0:45: Intro3:25: Oxfordshire England6:02: Peak District England7:40: Yorkshire Dales England8:51: East to Whitby England12:30: Back to the Peak District 14:18: Normandy France19:03: Loire Valley France21:41: Paris22:32: First Wander Your Way Adventures Small Group Tour31:31: Wander Your Way Adventures 2026 Tours35:49: Wrapping it upImportant links: Peak DistrictYorkshire Dales Normandy FranceLoire Valley FranceWander Your Way AdventuresWander Your WayWander Your Way Resources ★ Support this podcast ★

Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire coast feels remote for England. It lies at the bottom of a very steep road that descends down from the road between Whitby and Scarborough. The sign at the top of the village warns sightseers interested in a look not even to try driving down. With virtually no traffic noise and the whole area under a quiet sky, we knew this was a good place for the Lento microphones. The lane (we walked, obviously) winds very steeply down, passes a few little shops, a pub, a grocery shop with a jar part filled with fizzy drink to catch the wasps, and ends in a ramp onto the beach. Perfect waves break. Perfect because every detail can be heard cleanly, and precisely. No road or plane noise to get in the way.  Robin Hood's Bay was not actually our final resting point. For this we needed to walk about a quarter of a mile over the sand to the Youth Hostel at Boggle Hole. Delightfully named. Perfectly located.  Access across the beach is only possible when the tide is out. You know you're close when you reach a rocky stream that flows down from the cliffs. The last stretch, harder work. The stream is not walking boots friendly, uneven stepping stones look fun but need a confidence to use.  The Youth Hostel is tranquil. It really has the most peaceful surroundings of anywhere we've ever stayed. Above the hostel is a wooded area rich with rustling trees. As night approached we followed a tiny footpath up in between the trees. They swayed and hushed in the onshore breeze flowing up from the beach. We found a tree with a good trunk and tied the Lento box on to capture the sound of the night. * This section of time is captured in the woods above the Youth Hostel. It's from 3am, early August. Weather conditions are warm and dry, with moderate winds gusting to strong. Dark bush crickets live amongst the trees. They can be heard all through the night. They can, if you feel like it, provide something nice to count, like sheep, to help you get to sleep.

Laura and Anna discuss the statements made at the coroner's inquiry regarding Amy, the officers who were dismissed and told to classify Amy's case as ‘non-suspicious,' and Professor Tim Ackland's findings following his biomechanical analysis of the case. In this episode, Laura interviews Anna regarding the initial stages of Amy's relationship with David Simmons and discusses key warning signs that are frequently disregarded. Anna shares new evidence she obtained which proves Amy was planning a new life without Simmons and that he would be the subject of a significant insurance claim after he crashed the car with Amy in it, leading to significant injuries.  Please listen carefully and provide Laura with your thoughts about what happened to Amy, and please consider taking action on Any's behalf. When the Russian schooner Demeter drifted into Whitby harbor with its dead captain lashed to the wheel and its entire crew missing, the ship's log revealed a horrifying truth: something ancient and evil had been hunting them one by one across the dark waters. The final entries, written in the captain's trembling hand, chronicle the crew's descent from unease to terror as they realize their cargo of fifty earth-filled boxes conceals a predator that feeds in the night and cannot be killed.Join the DARKNESS SYNDICATE for the ad-free version: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateTake the WEIRD DARKNESS LISTENER SURVEY and help mold the future of the podcast: https://weirddarkness.com/surveySOURCES AND REFERENCES FROM THE EPISODE…BOOK: “The Last Voyage of Demeter” by Bram Stoker: https://amzn.to/3KZnJ0zBOOK: “Dracula” (full novel) by Bram Stoker: https://amzn.to/44sXcj4=====(Over time links may become invalid, disappear, or have different content. In this episode of the Covenant Podcast, Ken Glisch, Dewey Dovel, and Doug Barger continue examining the doctrine of election from John Gill's work "The Cause of God & Truth." In this section, Gill states that he is defending absolute election against Dr. Whitby by arguing from the most principal passages from Scripture. We hope the consideration of these passages will be a blessing to all our hearers who have faith in Lord Jesus Christ, through the electing love of the Father. I happened to listen to the opening credits today, and this week's chapter is certainly a bit random, and a bit irreverent. What it really needs to accompany it is one of those maps that you get on travel programs, that indicate the route taken as the story unfolds. You know the kind of thing I mean, I have the one from Antiques Road Trip in mind but numerous other examples are available. You start with a static visual of the area in question (in our case North Yorkshire and the East Coast) and then you get a little car-style icon that plots a course from the beginning of the story (in this case Scarborough) around the interim stops (Filingdales, Egton Bridge, Egton, Glaisdale, Staithes) and ending up at the journeys end, which for me was Steve R's childhood home of Whitby.Of course I don't have the go-to-skills to conjure one of those maps up, but how nice would it have been. Anyhow you get the idea.Love'n'streetfightinghTCD Merch StoreBecome Purple and support the showThe Invisible Man Volume 1: 1991-1997The Invisible Man Volume2: 1998-2014FacebookInstagramWebsite
