On this episode, we chart a course through all things games: We start our journey from Recent Release Bay, where games that have recently entered the hype cycle slosh against the waves, including Returnal, Ratchet and Clank, and New Pokémon Snap. We then enter the icy and tumultuous Activisea, where blistering gales carry the news of Activision Blizzard slowly transforming into the Call of Duty Corporation, with Toys for Bob forced to become a Warzone support studio. These harsh winds are only slightly buffeted by our quiet reflections on Hearthstone and World of Warcraft. Once the squall ends, we sail straight towards the Game Dev Archipelago, using the Double Fine’s recently released Amnesia Fortnight 2019 documentary as a guide. By this point, it’s all calm waters, as we discuss individual authorship on massive game projects as well as anti-adventure games with Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. Games include Teardown, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth, and Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. Got a question for the show? Denise Ward (Morning Green Tea & Incorrect Vermintide) joins us this week to discuss falling in love with video games through a neighbour's Sega Saturn; the aesthetics of Nights intro Dreams, in particular. After playing cult PS1 JRPG Legend of Legaia, she began to foster relationships with individual games' lore, leading her to look at the medium in a new light, while also becoming frustrated with the hegemonic interests of the industry. Also, we discuss being a female-presenting nonbinary person online, falling in love with games without necessarily playing them, preteen fascinations with fatalities, incels, fragile masculinity, topiary simulators, finding friends through LAN parties, being a decent person, tfw you get the skull, and Robert gets accused of being a Hanzo Main.Follow Denise on Twitter @DrFesty and Instagram @DrFesty. The last game of our remake-themed month, this one's... special. Once again, Ryu Anime Belmont dons his dramatic gloves and whip and sets out to save the inexplicably ninja Maria, who refuses to help him this time. This is, really, a wholly different game than Rondo of Blood, but does it hold up on its own? Whip right to that download. Show Notes (03:00) BIRDEMIC. (04:00) With feathers. (10:00) I'll be the one to say it... this looks like it belongs in G Gundam. Unrelated: I want a Let's Play of Zach doing Cuphead. (17:00) Zach's also been delving into Papers Please, as recommended by Yahtzee. (21:00) Some preliminary thoughts on Dead by Daylight. (26:00) Talking a bit about our experience with SkyFactory. (31:00) Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor. It's a weird... life/chore simulator? Highly recommended for an odd experience if it's on sale. (38:30) We talked about a lot of interesting games on this episode, but if I can only recommend one, it has to be Clandestine. (47:00) Finally getting around to Dracula X. See SXSW Gaming like you've never seen it before... through audio. Tag along with JD and Kyle as they frolic through the retelling of JD's FIRST EVER and Kyle's DEFINITELY NOT FIRST EVER SXSW experience. Highlights include talking about video games for people who don't like video games, trying to understand what the heck "fun" means, irritating question askers (one of whom may or may not be JD herself), Kyle stealing all of JD's potential friends, Kyle the Illustrator (but not the Kyle you're thinking of), JD's strange and passionate love of bloody cymbal crashes, and three tabletop games from Kickstarter that are just plain ol' super neat.
